High Performance Computing Best Practice Goals

Environmental responsibility:– GREEN datacenter, GREEN equipment, GREEN data management

Design responsibility:– Is the HPC simulation driving your experimental design and labs?– Can you visualize the output?

Productivity responsibility:– Buy the configuration that supports your research goals, reuse equipment– Scaling the configuration for future growth– Can CLOUD be a mechanism to do support this?

Educational responsibility with users:– Bringing new disciplines into the world of HPC– Collaboration with other centers– Centralizing some functions with room for experimentation

Project responsibility:– to support your country’s goals– Introduce HPC methods to support improved health, water management, a national

agenda

Some Economic Objectives of Thailand (my observations)

Rebuild and expand the infrastructure of Thailand to attract new industrial partners (logistics, supply chain)

Provide technology companies a reason to locate and stay in Thailand as a driver of high value business (design, crash modeling).

Water management end to end– from fine-grained forecasting to measurement (forecasting, sensor data)

Sugar cane, and crop bio-engineering for greater crop yields.

Should HPC align with the Economic Development of the Government?

A Working Example of Partnership that has been formed with the UK Business Innovation and Skill and the Daresbury Labs, UK

On the 13th July 2011, David Willetts, Minister of State for Universities and Science, invited academics, industrialists, hardware and software suppliers and experts from the Research Councils to discuss the establishment of an e-infrastructure for the UK. That meeting confirmed that we are experiencing a paradigm shift in which the scientific process and innovation are beginning in the virtual world of modelling and simulation before moving to the real world. From there, a study was conducted, A Strategic Vision for UK e-Infrastructure (IBM has seen the move from HPC to Technical Computing, sometimes referred to as Data Driven, Big Data……)

David Willets– Strategic Vision for UK e-Infrastructure

Recommendations:1. Agree to the costed, ten year roadmap to achieve an …e-

infrastructure and …to extend the infra-structure beyond the public sector. Use the recently announced capital spend of £145M (2011-2012).

2. Drive the development of software for all of the partners in the e-

infrastructure 3. Embed e-science training in successful Doctoral Training Centres.

Use these modules to offer training to industry.

4. Set up a single coordinating body that owns this Strategy

Are you ready to work with industry?

Minister for Universities and Science David Willetts said: “This new cutting edge research centre will bring together experts from the science and business worlds. It will be vital in realising the Government’s ambition for the UK to be a world leader in high performance computing and will provide industry and academia with the tools needed to drive growth and innovation. It will also build on the strengths of the Daresbury Science and Innovation Campus - which recently became an Enterprise Zone - and shows that our £145 million investment in e-infrastructure is attracting international companies to the UK.”
