The Perry Christian First Christian Church Disciples of Christ

We should be less concerned about making churches full of people and

more concerned about making people full of God.

--C. Kirk and David Roozer

God is more interested in

our character

than he is in our activity. --Henry T. Blackaby

I will build my church! --Jesus

Some think of the church as a repository of tradition and heritage and whose

main function is to see they are preserved. Some believe the church to ne exclusive-

ly a place where Biblical truth is taught and people go home with notebooks full of

notes and the margins of their Bibles bleeding with ink. A few insist the church’s

sole purpose is to worship—seeker-sensitive, hand waving hallelujah-shouting, or

liturgical—it doesn’t matter. Some cast the church’s image as strictly mission. For

them everything the church does should be measured by how effectively it is bring-

ing people to know God’s love in Christ Jesus.

These observations prompt me to ask: are these projections of what WE

want the church to be or what GOD wants the church to be? I think it makes a sig-

nificant difference. Before the church can be anything else we (individually, and as

a whole church) must become clay in the hands of the Potter, allowing him to mod

us and make us. We must allow the Master Craftsman to “build” us into the people

he wants us to be.

We are quickly reminded by a few, “the church is like a dinosaur, struggling

to live without changing and adapting to its environment. How true! Yet the

church’s life is not dependent on our busy-ness and activity, upon our efforts at sur-

vival—but upon God’s activity in us and through us.

Yes, these days do dictate an unprecedented urgency in accomplishing

God’s work. We are called to his work. Nonetheless, before we are called to this

task. He calls us to himself.

Which call will we answer today?

Nothing is going to happen here … unless God himself does it.

In His Love, Martin
