THE

PURPOSE OF

SIMON BIRCH

“Simon Birch” is a delightful movie that has it’s

setting in 1964, in a New Hampshire small town something like Norman Rockwell

would have painted. It’s about a friendship between two boys, one a gawky pre-

adolescent named Joe, and his other a dwarf (maybe three feet high with a hunch

back) named Simon who believes God has chosen him for a mission in life. The

movie is framed in a flashback in which an adult Joe revisits scenes from his child-

hood.

Joe is your average kid. Simon Birch is not. Joe and Simon are drawn to-

gether because they’re both misfits (now where have I heard that before). Joe is a

boy without a father; his mother, Rebecca, steadfastly refuses to name names. Sev-

eral times throughout the movie Simon contemplates his “mission” as he and Joe

engage in a lot of the “stuff” of growing up and growing up in the sixties. You can

tell Simon really wants to know his mission and wants to do it well. The movie

ends with “little” Simon saving a bus full of children when the bus slides into a fro-

zen river.

Like Joe and Simon we may not exactly fit. And, God has a mission, a pur-

pose, for each of us as well. It may be not something spectacular like rescuing chil-

dren from a frozen river, but, it may be. Like Joe our purpose may simply be telling

a story, telling how we came to know God’s love, and more specifically, in Christ

Jesus.

“What on earth am I here for?” It’s a life size question that every one of us

should ask ourselves and answer.

In small groups on Sunday Evening we are answering the question using

Rick Warren’s book of the same name. We begin at 5 with songs in the sanctuary, a

meal at 5:30, and small groups at 6-7:30. It’s not to late to join us. Come and learn

with us. We would love to have your fellowship.

Purpose #3 You Were Created To Become Like Christ

“Remember that the temptations that come into your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not

give in to it. 1 Corinthians 10:13

What Christ-like character quality can I develop by defeating the biggest temptation I face?

For Oct. 18 Sunday night discussion, please be reading Chapters 22-28

Join us for Small Group Bible Study Sunday nights as we discuss this and other questions from “What On Earth Am I Here For?”

Be intentional about connecting with God and con-

nect with others—join a Small Group.

Who? You are. You are invited to connect with

us in a small group.

What? We’ll be working through Rick Warren’s

book “What on earth am I here for?” The book is a

free gift for all who participate.

When? Sunday Evenings, 5-7pm. Worship at 5.

Lite Supper at 5:30. Small Groups from 6:00- 7:30.

OR you can join for the small group study at

6:00pm.

Why? Because knowing our purpose and living out of that

purpose sharpens our focus and gives us freedom. Because

sermons are more cerebral and conversation is more visceral.

Because sharing our faith and ourselves makes us strong, our

joy greater, helps us realize our problems and situations are

not unique, that God is at work in our lives.
