It had been a long week by the time we reached the midweek, and yet another time shared by all who came. We watched our kids share some of the work they had done during those three days. We welcomed guests among our number and we fellowshipped for a long time after services were over. We cleaned up and put things back in order, and when it was all said and done, we went home with our families and we saw another day dawn. For our neighbors in Charleston, SC, last Wednesday night was anything but normal for them. In what is being called the worse church massacre in American history, (reminiscent of the 16th St. Baptist church bombing, September 15, 1963 in Birmingham, AL, where four young girls were killed and 22 others injured), our hearts were broken to learn of this tragedy. Last Wednesday, we learned of nine souls entering eternity at the hands and heartless actions of one, Dylan Storm Roof. We know little good about this young man. He’s 21 years old, unemployed, and has a history of criminal and drug activity. We know he went to the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, during the time when they met for their prayer meeting and bible study. He went there under false pretenses. He was there for about an hour, posing as a guest, and their love and kindness shown to him was overwhelming, so much so, (by his own confession) he almost didn’t follow through with his heinous plan…almost. He killed nine people, the youngest 26, the oldest 87. During Dylan Roof’s bond hearing, one relative of the victims, identified with the last name Sanders, said to him via a video conference, “We welcomed you Wednesday night in our Bible study with open arms. You have killed some of the most beautifulest people that I know. Every fiber in my body hurts ... and I'll never be the same…[but you are forgiven, I forgive you].” More than anything, what has captured the attention of the world and our nation, has been the message of forgiveness and the seeking of comfort and healing from the One who is able to comfort us in our most desperate times of inexplicable grief. This is neither the time nor the space to debate the finer points of doctrine or faith and practice. It is however appropriate to conclude, when the message of forgiveness which comes only from Jesus Christ, is promoted and practiced, hearts and lives are transformed. We are not watching a city loot, vandalize, riot, or burn to the ground. We’re watching the greater act of love witness to the power found in Jesus Christ. His truth may be able to be confused, but the power of His forgiveness, when practiced, cannot be contained. When you come to the teaching of the Father, you cannot help but be given the clear view of what life can be and should be through the power of Jesus Christ. Our world needs more teaching of Jesus and less rhetoric from Democrats and Republicans. We need more shining of the light and less fighting darkness with more darkness. We’ve already seen the politicizing of this event, and will no doubt see such continue. I hope you know, there is no greater power on this earth, than the newness of a life in Jesus.
