Conditions for Participation

In 2020 we are providing our students with the opportunity to be part of 1 to 1 BYOD and use their own Google chrome book within the school. As technology changes and provides new and exciting tools for learning, we adjust our teaching styles to accommodate these. The development and continuation of BYOD classes is fully supported by the Board of Trustees of our school.

NIS has researched and decided that there will only be one platform specified for use in these classrooms. A Google Chrome Book. By purchasing a Google chrome book for your son or daughter to use at school, you are also agreeing to adhere to the following conditions for bringing a Chrome Book for use on the school network.

● You are agreeing to purchase a Chrome book that meets the set school specifications. (Google Chrome Book)

● The Device will need to have school-approved applications installed. ● You are agreeing for our staff to monitor the applications installed on your device

and their use. ● You are agreeing to ensure no file sharing software is installed on your child’s

device. This breaches copyright laws. ● You are agreeing to put in place safe procedures as to how your son or daughter will

transport their device to and from school. ● You are agreeing to take responsibility for recording the device serial numbers and

other relevant details for warranty and insurance purposes. ● You are agreeing to ensure that the device is insured and that you are responsible

for warranty and insurance claims. ● You are agreeing to monitor and take responsibility for your child’s use of the device

at home, particularly with regard to accessing and using Internet sites. ● You are agreeing to the school’s right to withdraw your child’s right to have a device

at school if they breach the school’s Internet user policy. As a school we agree to:

● Have your son or daughter’s device secured in a locked classroom / cupboard when required.

● Monitor Internet usage and assist students with basic issues. ● Provide your son or daughter with guidelines for the use of the device at set times

and looking after peripherals like the battery to prolong the life of the device. ● Instruct your son or daughter on the School Internet Use Policy, safe practices and

BYOD procedures.

COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS WITH ANSWERS

Bring Your Own Devices (BYOD) Questions and Answers

How can BYOD impact on learning?

Will my child be disadvantaged if I cannot afford to buy into the BYOD scheme? No. The school will provide a range of devices that all students can use at various times of their learning. These will be chrome books.

Security of the devices at school. The device can be locked away at school during breaks and out of classroom activities. During the rest of the time students will be responsible for their device.

Will every child have their own device. Yes. If we have enough school devices then every child in every class will have a device for school use. If we can’t do this then Year 8 students have priority and some devices will be available to Year 7 students.

Use of devices by all teachers? Teachers will be provided with training on how to use Chrome Books. Extra tuition will be available.

Will my child have to share their device? No. The device is the child’s own and it will not be expected to be lent to other students during the day.

If I have multiple children at school how do we share / provide one each? This is a question that parents will need to consider for each family situation. We would only recommend that families consider this if they are in a position to be able to afford the device.

How do we continue the Professional Development to support the growth of BYOD? We will need to have continued ongoing support to ensure that P.D. continues to support BYOD. This will include staff meetings and attending conferences when possible.

How useful and effective is it going to be in the classroom? It is another learning tool. The device will not replace pen and paper. There will still be lots of times when students can expect to be using pen and paper in the classroom. However a device can open up a whole new way of supporting their learning.

Insurance whose responsibility? It will be the parents’ responsibility for insurance the same way as it is for bringing a bike etc to school. If you are not sure you will need to check with your individual insurance policy.

How often will it be used? This will vary depending on the lesson and the teacher. However we hope that your student will be using it when it is suitable for the learning-taking place. The short answer is: daily.

What happens with problem solving re hardware/software issues? Will the techie guy at school do this / or teachers? Who pays? It will be the parent’s responsibility to look after hardware problems etc. As you can appreciate as a school this would be simply too hard and too time consuming to look after all devices.

SECTION A

INTRODUCTION The measures to ensure the cybersafety of Napier Intermediate School outlined in this document are based on our core values.

The school’s computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices bring great benefits to the teaching and learning programmes at Napier Intermediate School, and to the effective operation of the school.

Our school has rigorous cybersafety practices in place, which include cybersafety use agreements for all school staff and students.

The overall goal of the school in this matter is to create and maintain a cybersafety culture which is in keeping with the values of the school, and legislative and professional obligations. This use agreement includes information about your obligations, responsibilities, and the nature of possible consequences associated with cybersafety breaches which undermine the safety of the school environment. All students will be issued with a user agreement and once signed consent has been returned to school, students will be able to use the school ICT equipment/devices and access our network. The school’s computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices are for educational purposes appropriate to the school environment. This applies whether the ICT equipment is owned or leased either partially or wholly by the school, and used on or off the school site. The school may monitor traffic and material sent and received using the school’s ICT network. The school may use filtering and/or monitoring software to restrict access to certain sites and data, including email. The school may audit its computer network, Internet access facilities, computers and other school ICT equipment/devices or commission an independent forensic audit. Student User Agreement for Napier Intermediate School Napier Intermediate School STUDENT USER AGREEMENT OVERVIEW Digital technologies are tools that can help us learn at school in all sorts of ways. Some of these ways include looking at interesting things online, talking to people, creating music and media, gathering new ideas, and learning how to use tools. When we use digital technologies and online spaces it’s important that we learn ways to keep ourselves safe, and that we make positive choices in ways we behave when we are online. At Napier Intermediate School we call this being a ‘digital citizen’ and good digital citizens help to make our school a safe and positive place for everyone. This agreement shares what Napier Intermediate School does to help make learning online safe, and what we need to do. We know it is not always easy to understand everything about online spaces. It can be complicated at times, and some things can go wrong. This is why it’s important that we commit to making it as safe as possible to use digital tools and online spaces for learning. NAPIER INTERMEDIATE ROLE This section outlines the school’s approach to digital technology and online safety. Napier Intermediate School supports you by helping you learn in the best ways we can, and keeping you safe at school whether you are online or offline. We will do this by:

● making everybody aware of their responsibilities ● planning times in the terms to learn about positive online behaviours and ways to keep safe ● overseeing students’ use of school’s digital devices and online spaces ● offering access to the internet and online platforms ● using filtering software to protect everybody ● helping students who need support to deal with online problems even if these happen outside of school hours ● keeping safe the personal information the school collects about you ● protecting your rights to a safe and positive online environment ● providing opportunities to use digital technologies in the learning at school

● having a plan to help you when something serious or illegal happens that involves digital technology or online spaces. This might include getting in touch with the Police or Netsafe.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES This section outlines what your school considers appropriate behaviour for digital technology use in school and as a member of the school community As a student of Napier Intermediate School and also part of our community, we ask you to help make our school a place that is safe, friendly, and fair. This means taking our school values and acting on these whether you’re online, or offline, and help to make our school a positive place to learn, connect and play. This is being a ‘digital citizen’. As a digital citizen, you will:

● Keep it kind. Think about others online and talk or share in respectful ways. ● Keep it to yourself. Keep passwords and information about yourself and other people private and offline as it

can be easily shared, viewed, screenshot, or changed by others to mean different things. Nothing is private online.

● Keep it careful. Because things you do or say online can be seen by others, be careful to share the things you can feel proud of, or would be happy sharing with someone face to face.

● Keep it positive. Always respect others online and communicate in a positive, respectful way. ● Post with caution. Anything you post or do online can influence what people think of you. Put your best foot

forward online. ● Don’t believe everything you see. Always think carefully about the information you see online – not

everything is true. If you are unsure of something talk to a teacher. ● Avoid online bullying. Creating or forwarding content that is harmful or hurtful towards someone else is not

okay at any time. Sending multiple messages to somebody who doesn’t want them is also considered online bullying and is never okay.

● Be security smart. Keep personal information secure by using strong passwords and not sharing them with other students. Always log out of a site, or device. Get permission before downloading software to the school network or connecting new devices.

● Respect others’ rights. Always ask first if you need to use someone else’s device, online sites, and their image, ideas, creations or work that’s stored online.

● Recognise other’s work. When we use or take others’ work or ideas from the internet, we need to make sure we copy or use these in ways that are okay because there are rules about this. Your teacher will help you to use things you find online in the right ways.

● Use personal devices sensibly. Keep your device(s) on silent during school hours and only use it outside of class time unless you have been given permission to use it during lessons.

● Seek help. Sometimes you or someone you know will feel unsafe or come across bad or hurtful content online. If this happens talk to a trusted adult about what can be done.

ONLINE INCIDENTS This section outlines how students can seek support and assistance if they encounter any online concerns Despite the good things technology offers and people’s best intentions, sometimes things will go wrong. Sometimes these things are on purpose, and sometimes they are accidents. Napier Intermediate School will support you if something goes wrong online. Online bullying. Online bullying is not accepted at our school. If you or somebody else is being bullied or criticised online, report it. Keep the content so we can investigate it. Stop any further contact with the person who is bullying. You can report to the Deputy Principal for help. It’s important to think about sharing what’s happened with a trusted adult like a parent, a member of your whānau, or someone else who looks after you. Report a problem. We need your help to keep our school safe. If you see something on the school systems that you don’t think should be there, we need you to report it as soon as you can to one of the Deputy Principals. This is really helpful and important, so that the school can find out what the problem is and fix it as soon as possible, and help those who might need it. Online safety support. Netsafe is our New Zealand online safety organisation that is able to help when things go wrong online, when we have problems with content or negative things that others are doing online. They provide free, private advice for you and your family seven days a week for all online safety challenges. They can be contacted on 0508 638723 or online at netsafe.org.nz

STUDENT STATEMENT I know about the way I should use digital devices and online spaces at school for learning. I know that I should be kind, careful and responsible when I use devices, and when I go online, and this is the same for the devices that school owns, or if it is my own device that I bring to school. I know that if I behave in ways that are not safe online, or kind or responsible, that this is not okay at Napier Intermediate School. There may be some actions that my school might have to take, such as not being able to use the school device or a device I have brought from home.
