Legion of Mary Sept 8th. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary The Church has celebrated Mary’s birth since at least the sixth century. A September birth was chosen because the Eastern Church begins its Church year with September. The September 8 date helped determine the date for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception on Sept December 8. Sept 12th. The Feast of the Most Holy Name of the Blessed Vir-gin Mary. Day This Feast originated in Spain and was approved in 1513, to be celebrated on September 12th, four days after the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Mother. In 1970, the feast day was removed from the universal calendar, but was reinstated by Pope John Paul II in the third edition of the Roman Missal, issued in 2003, as an “optional memorial.” Sept 15th. Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. On Oct. 13, 1917, during her last apparition and the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima, Mary appeared not only as Our Lady of the Rosary and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but also as Our Lady of Sorrows. Weekly meetings Weds Mornings after 8:30 Mass. Adult Ed, Classroom B, visitors welcome. ~Legion of Mary

The Feast Meant for Everyone Tom Booth/Sarah Hart

Bread for the immigrant, bread for the poor, bread for the hungry who beg at our door. Food for the outcast waiting to belong; come to the feast meant for everyone. Bread for the sheltered, bread for the rich; those who need nothing but all Jesus is. Food for all people, empty, we all come; come to the feast meant for everyone. Oh, how great is the love of God in this body broken, this saving blood. Oh, how great is the love of God here in the feast meant for everyone, here in the feast meant for everyone. Drink for the brother, thirsting for more; drink for the sister who’s run out of hope. This cup is healing, more than just enough. Come to the feast meant for everyone. (to Refrain) Gather the sinners, gather the saints, all souls in heaven and here in this place. This is the table where we are made one, here in the feast meant for everyone. © 2019, Tom Booth and Sarah Hart. Published by Spirit & Song, a division of OCP. All rights re-served.

O beautiful for patriot dream That sees beyond the years Thine alabaster cities gleam Undimmed by human tears!

O Come To The Altar Are you hurting and broken within Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin Jesus is calling Have you come to the end of yourself Do you thirst for a drink from the well Jesus is calling O come to the altar The Father's arms are open wide Forgiveness was bought with The precious blood of Jesus Christ Leave behind your regrets and mistakes Come today there's no reason to wait Jesus is calling Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy From the ashes a new life is born Jesus is calling CCLI Song # 7051511 Chris Brown | Mack Brock | Steven Furtick | Wade Joye © 2015 Music by Elevation Worship Publishing (Admin. by Essential Music Publishing LLC) For use solely with the SongSelect® Terms of Use. Reading II James 2:1-5 My brothers and sisters, show no partiality as you adhere to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ. For if a man with gold rings and fine clothes comes into your assembly, and a poor person in shabby clothes also comes in, and you pay attention to the one wearing the fine clothes and say, “Sit here, please, ” while you say to the poor one, “Stand there, ” or “Sit at my feet, ” have you not made dis-tinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil designs? Listen, my beloved brothers and sisters. Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?

Alleluia Cf. Matthew 4:23 R. Alleluia, alleluia. Jesus proclaimed the Gospel of the kingdom and cured every disease among the people. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Mark 7:31-37 Again Jesus left the district of Tyre and went by way of Si-don to the Sea of Galilee, into the district of the Decapolis. And people brought to him a deaf man who had a speech impediment and begged him to lay his hand on him. He took him off by himself away from the crowd. He put his finger into the man’s ears and, spitting, touched his tongue; then he looked up to heaven and groaned, and said to him, “Ephphatha!”— that is, “Be opened!” — And immediately the man’s ears were opened, his speech impediment was re-moved, and he spoke plainly. He ordered them not to tell anyone. But the more he ordered them not to, the more they proclaimed it. They were exceedingly astonished and they said, “He has done all things well. He makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10 R. (1b) Praise the Lord, my soul! The God of Jacob keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD gives sight to the blind; the LORD raises up those who were bowed down. The LORD loves the just; the LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The fatherless and the widow the LORD sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul!

Reading I Isaiah 35:4-7a Thus says the LORD: Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Streams will burst forth in the desert, and rivers in the steppe. The burning sands will become pools, and the thirsty ground, springs of water.

Sunday Readings September 5, 2021 Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Times

PROFESSION OF FAITH I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven of earth, of all things visible and invisible . I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten son of God, born of the father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, be-gotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen

Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time Our readings this Sunday describe God’s

work of liberation for those who are vulnerable. Isaiah portrays the coming of God in terms of the healing of the blind, the deaf, and the lame. James notes that God chooses the poor to be rich in faith. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus heals a deaf per-son who has a speech impediment. The readings remind us of the acute struggles of the disabled, the excluded, and the poor. In the last year and a half, the pandemic has reminded us that we are all vulnerable, that illness and death are near us always. Today we hear that God’s presence is re-vealed when God lifts us up, and when we join God to lift each other up. Our care for others, especially those in greatest need, can be our grateful response to God’s healing of us in our own vulnerability.

No teman.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK

PRAY FOR OUR PRIESTS/RELIGIOUS/SEMINARIANS

THE MESSIAH FORETOLD Today’s story of the cure of a deaf man with a speech impediment is a good example of how much is con-tained in a simple miracle story. The Greek word mogilalos appears only here in all of the New Testament. It is a tech-nical term referring to someone with a stammer. It is also used only once in the entire Jewish scriptures, in the pas-sage that we read today as our first reading from Isaiah. Clearly, by his choice of this precise word Mark wants us to recognize that what Jesus is doing is the fulfillment of what Isaiah had predicted centuries earlier. In fact, Mark wants us to recognize that Jesus is the Messiah foretold by Isaiah and the other Jewish prophets of old. The word ephphatha, “be opened,” used to describe the restoration of the man’s speech, is another example of a subtle allusion to an earlier prophecy. This time the prophecy in question is from Ezekiel, when he foretells that in the messianic age, “your mouth shall be opened to speak” (24:26). The sophistication of Mark’s narrative is further revealed when we realize that there are multiple levels within a single reference. Mark not only draws our attention back to Israel’s prophetic past, he also points to the initiatory practice of his contemporaries by his men-tion of such things as spittle, touching of ears, and the use of the word ephphatha, all of which were practices incorporated into the early Church’s baptismal ritual.
