“I’m excited to bring you AIHA’s 2019 Annual Report.”
We are pleased to highlight our successes over the past year, and hope you feel your association is heading in the right direction to further empower and sustain the profession. As we begin a new decade and celebrate the Association’s 80th year, I’d like to highlight some of our successes as we move your association forward into the future. Most notably, we are proud to report: • The AIHA.org website received a much-needed facelift and redesign,
modernizing AIHA’s online presence with a site that is more conducive to mobile access and our education and event resources.
• With the new website, we renamed how we refer to our eLearning, webinars, courses and books: AIHA University. “AIHA U” served more than 5,100 professionals through 60 different educational offerings and launched two new professional certificate programs.
• A new comprehensive salary survey that encompasses the IH/OH profession was completed. The results of the survey are accessible to members through an online portal that gives you the ability to fine-tune the data to your professional needs.
• We completed the first biennial State of AIHA Research report, outlining progress on AIHA’s Content Priorities and our commitment to scientific and technical initiatives.
• A new eLibrary subscription service launched at the end of 2019, giving online access to 50 of AIHA’s top publications. It’s responsive and easy to use, a perfect resource for today’s IH/OH students and professionals on-the-go.
We are very grateful to AIHA’s Hamilton Club partners, who continue to give back to the industry through generous corporate support. AIHA members are some of the most dedicated, passionate and mission-driven professionals I’ve ever met. We extend a sincere thank you to our many volunteers, who continue to have such a positive impact on your association and the profession as a whole. AIHA is poised now more than ever to educate and empower the next generation of IH/OH professionals. Sincerely,

Important Instrumentation and Methods for the Detection of Chemicals in the Field , 2nd edition
Edited by Philip A. Smith, PhD, CIH, FAIHA®
The ability to rapidly detect chemicals and unsafe conditions related to
the composition of workplace atmospheres has been pursued for well
over one hundred years. A number of well-known and accepted detec-
tion systems have been developed and refined over the years –often
applied to the detection of conditions associated with acute hazards,
for which time-weighted average sampling may not be protective. In
addition, real-time detection instruments and systems are also available
to supplement the assessment of exposures related to chronic health
effects, for which time-weighted average sampling is highly relevant.
Most practicing industrial hygienists and safety professionals are
familiar with these exposure assessment tools, but often do not fully ap-
preciate the capabilities and limitations of specific detection technolo-
gies. In addition to the time-tested detection tools available to us, new
compact and highly capable field analysis systems exist, and improve-
ments continue to be made to reduce the size, complexity, and cost of
such systems. The fusion of old and new capabilities is changing the
state-of-the-art for exposure assessment, and a firm understanding of
the available field detection and exposure measurement tools is critical
to the ability of industrial hygienists and allied professionals to properly
fill their roles in protecting human health.
