A TABULATIUN OF DATA BASES:

ACCESS AND CONTENT

INTRODUCTION

The paper is a tabulation of data bases that a

researcher in the National Capital Area rQight call upon and

where they might be found.

For oints of access, both inside and outside ot the

Department f ational Detence, the reader should not make

any assumptjofls rerlarding cost of seirch, general

accessibiliqy, timeliness of response or the quality of the p

resulting m~terial.

AIM/

The'aim of this paper is to assemble information

describing data bases and to give the location of access to

these resources.

SCOPE

IL-With the fantastic gjrowth r't inf -rmnation, it is

possible 6o spend an enoqmrous amnount ..f time and eftort just

on the tabulation osourC' n without anyt.t.ing more than a

Guperticial contact with the recordedi information.

Page 8: I AD-R146 A TABULATION OF DATA BASES: ACCESS AND …

-2-

Since this paper is in support of the wo~k program of

*ORAE, quite nat~irally then, the set of -locations that have

been included are those which would be considered within

easy access by the members of D) Strat A and USPP.

For the set of sources, those data basL-s which are

available at the various locations have been included.

only unclassified data bases are considered.

Clearly' the scope ot this paper is defined only for

the time of writin,., a snapshot. Because of the continuing

*production of infcrmation, data bases will generally

continue to grow although some may fail tor economic

reasons. This scope will become outdated for se'veral

* reasons including the following obvious onei:

a. for a particular location, a new data base is

added;

b. for an existingr data base, its range of interest

and/or publicati.oims consulted expands;

c. f or an mimbre I a sys te (Vg Ul I.LOG)) , another data

basv is adned.

For the purposes of this paper, the term aata base is

tak n in a broad sense, including not only a collection of

int rmat ion on a specific topic but also a system~ which

se es as an umbrella for several specific collections.

TAB3ULATION

The set Of locations, after consultation, was taken

s the following.;

a. ORAE Library

. ,S

b . ,,. %

C. DHQ Library

d- Dept of External Aftairs Library

e. Carleton University, Norman Patterson School of

Internatioral Aftairs, Resource Centre.

Each location will be taken in turn and given a

listing of its major datai bases. These data bases ar" Lnose

which appear important to- the wide-ranging ,;tuaiL-s of D)

*Strat A and which ac- ofter. electronically svarchable. For

each data base, th reader is referred co a speciic annex

wherein a short description of the data bast is provite.
