It is with great joy, pleasure and pride that we send you this year’s

Christmas catalog from the Danish Windmill. We are excited to invite

you to take part in the many traditions of Christmas and hygge, which

we all love in our homes.

Hygge (hoo-ga) describes feeling cozy and comfortable and

appreciating simple pleasures like hanging paper cones, baking

Christmas cookies, making advent calendars, decorating the

Christmas tree and enjoying time with family and friends in front of a

crackling fire.

This year’s Christmas catalog is a ―hygge-inspired‖ collection which

represents the genuine coziness and hygge of the Danish Christmas

time, just as we know it, so you can create it in your own home.

T hanks to its many friends and historic millwright Ben

Hassett, the Danish Windmill is getting its new wings in

time for Christmas.

The restoration and preservation project nearing completion is a

major milestone in the life of the 1848 Windmill. The sails that are

being replaced were installed as new when the Mill came to Elk

Horn forty-one years ago. The wind shaft, brake wheel, and other

parts date back to when it was in Denmark!

Your donations make a difference…

The Mill is the icon of our Danish Villages. It’s an important piece of

our history that is very important to our visitors who come from

around the world.

Thanks to your generous donations, both monetary and in-kind, we

were able to meet and exceed the fundraising goal of $200,000

which was needed for this project. While this major overhaul will

restore the Mill’s structural integrity, it will still be an old mill and

require ongoing care.

With your continued investment in the Mill and its Endowment Fund, this

historical treasure will continue to serve as a focal point for educating

visitors, children and families about wind energy and green technology,

agriculture and of course, our Danish cultural heritage and sense of

place.

The Mill has served generations of families over the span of its 169

years, from the field to the mill and from the mill to the table.

Since arriving in Elk Horn, its mission has been to serve as a working

example of life in another time as an educational and historical museum.

visit the Danish villages of Elk Horn and Kimballton, Iowa.

Tivoli Fest and JuleFest

Elk Horn's Danish celebration, Tivoli Fest, is held each Memorial

Day weekend. Enjoy Danish foods and specialties such as

smørbrød, æbelskiver and medisterpølse. There is the Tour de

Tivoli bike race and Mermaid to Mill 5K Run, a parade, Danish folk

dancers, an entertainment stage, and fireworks.

Julefest is held annually over Thanksgiving weekend. This is a fun-

filled Christmas festival with the Naughty or Nisse 5K Run, over 25

local businesses, organizations, historical sites and museums. Visit

the unique gift shops, large Christmas Boutique and more!
