About us

Huvadhoo Aid (Former Hoadedhdhoo Association for Development) is a non-governmental,

youth organization located in Gaaf Dhaal Atoll. HAD was founded in 1987 as Hoadedhdhoo

Zuvananunge Jamiyya and then renamed to Hoadedhdhoo Association for Development in 1997

following restructuring. HAD‟s mission is to achieve rural socio-economic development of

youth, women, disabled people and the community, as well as to increase active citizenship and

civic participation, strengthen civil society organizations, promote responsible governance, and

improve the image of the Maldives throughout the world. HAD also believes that good

democratic, equitable governance and a prosperous society can be built only through achieving

constructive civic participation. With the outstanding dvelopment of HAD the restructing

process continued to move towards a third generation NGO. With the change of motive scope of

programmes, targeted benificiaries the name has changed to Huvadhoo Aid from 3 May 2010.

The Restructuring process is in progress. Under the process HAD volunteers Co had been

established .

HAD primarily works to improve the quality of life for Huvadhu atoll population, especially,

youth, women, and the disabled. Thus, consultations with local government officials, the Island

Development Committee, the Women‟s Development Committee, civil society organizations,

and the local community are ongoing to develop and jointly implement projects that address

community needs. Additionally, HAD‟s other target groups – with which they primarily work

on capacity building – are other civil society organizations and local communities throughout the

southernmost atolls of the Maldives.

HAD is an entirely volunteer-run organization with a total of 273 members. The 13 person

executive committee is democratically elected by other members of the organization and is

supported by local, national, and foreign volunteers. HAD‟s organizational structure encourages

leadership, but is also horizontally integrated to allow for members to flexibly interact for

holistic problem solving. To effectively manage multiple projects and its expanding membership,

HAD is divided into six units managed by executive board members, which are: programme

development, project implementation unit, youth and sports development, finance and

administration, HAD Biz, and the Male office. Additionally, the executive committee and other

volunteers meets at least once a month to discuss socio-economic development issues, social

issues, gender issues, and environment issues, and any other relevant community, regional, or

national project(s) being undertaken.

HAD is an extremely active organization that maintains, develops, and undertakes multiple

projects holistically and simultaneously. To successfully achieve its mission and objectives,

HAD runs programs and projects in the areas of environment, employment, education, and

healthcare.

Programmes

Life Skills Programme to grade 10 students of Hoadedhdhoo School

Hoadedhoo Association for Development had conducted a life skills session to Grade 10 students

of Hoadedhoo School in collaboration with

Hoadedhdhoo School. The program aimed to

aware students about the life skills they need to

face the challenges in day to day life such as

decision making, critical thinking, empathy etc.

At the opening speech by HAD‟s Assistant

Director Youth and Sports Mr. Muaz Mohamed

said that HAD‟s objective is to change the

youth‟s attitude towards moderate thinking and

youth participation in all aspects of development

in the society. He also emphasized on HAD‟s objective in contributing to the government‟s goal

of holistic education.

The session was held at Main Hall of Hoadedhdhoo School in which students presented role

plays of different life skills. The session was facilitated by HAD‟s Director General Mr. Ahmed

Ameez

Seminar to aware people on decentralisation and get public opinion on the proposed decentralisation bill to the People’s Majlis

Hoadedhoo Association for Development (HAD) in collaboration with Maldives Youth Action

Network (MYAN) had conducted a seminar to aware people on decentralization and get public

opinion on the

proposed

decentralizatio

n bill to the

People‟s

Majlis. In the

opening speech

by HAD‟s

Director

General Mr.

Ahmed Ameez said that the role of NGOs is vital in

democratization process and NGOs can act as a link to deliver the pulse of people and their

opinions on various issues to the government and parliamentarians.

The first session was on importance of decentralization for the rural development and the session

was facilitated by HAD‟s Executive director Mr. Imad Mohamed. Imad emphasized on elements

of decentralization, types of decentralization, levels of decentralization and challenges to rural

development. He said that decentralization will bring positive changes to the islands and atolls.

The second session was aimed to get public opinion

on various articles in the proposed decentralization bill

to the parliament. The session mainly focused on

island councils, atoll councils and local council

authority. People presented at the seminar expressed

their views and suggestions on various articles in the

bill. This session was facilitated by HAD‟s Assistant

Executive Director Mr. Mohamed Mauroof.

After the sessions facilitators answered the questions

by the participants. The opinions and suggestions acquired from the seminar will be passed on to

the parliamentarians.

Meeting with NGOs based in Nadella

Hoadedhoo Association for Development had conducted a

meeting with NGOs based in the island of Nadella. In the

meeting HAD shared the process of forming a Sports

Association of Hoadedhoo (SAH) and the organizational

structure of the Sports Association. HAD‟s Executive

Director Mr. Imad Mohamed said that the current

government‟s policy is to establish sports associations at

island and atoll levels and urged the NGOs of Nadella to

form a sports Association in Nadella.

In addition to this information was also collected on

challenges to free and

fair elections and the

role of NGOs to

overcome these

challenges.

After the meeting

HAD‟s Executive

Director started the special volley ball match organised by

Nadella island Development Society(NIDS) to mark the

international women‟s day.

Go Hoadedhdhoo Friendship Camp 2010

Hoadedhdhoo Assocciation for Dvelopment had conducted “Go Hoadedhdhoo Fiendship

Camp” in association with Maldives Youth Action

Network form 16 – 17 April 2010. The camp intended to

bring the NGOs based in Huvadhoo Atoll to a common

platform and share each other‟s knowledge and experience

to bring a positive

change to our

communities. In

addition it aimed to

boost the capacity of

NGOs through capacity building sessions and aware youth

leaders on environment and climate change

The camp was inaugurated by the Vice president of the

Maldives Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan Manik. He

highlighted that today‟s youth are tomorrow‟s leaders and it is important to empower and build a

healthy youth and more programs should be conducted to the youth by the NGOs. Deputy State

Minister of Home affairs Mr. Mohamed Shareef also spoke in the briefing session of the camp

and said that he hope that the camp would enhance a resolution on challenges to youth and others

challenges to the islands and that resolution would be sent to the Upper South Province Office.

Two NGOs from Hoadedhdhdoo, Hoadedhdhoo School, Hoadedhdhoo Health Centre, two

NGOs from Thinadhoo, Thinadhoo Police Satiation and two NGOs from Nadella participated

which totaled to 40 participants. Sessions on environment, Police business plan, Strategic

Planning and Proposal Writing were conducted. Apart from these sessions a night fishing trip

and volleyball match between participants from other islands and participants from

Hoadedhdhoo was an important part of the Camp.

The most important part of the camp was the Youth Forum which was a summarized views and

suggestions on all the challenges and problem discussed in previous sessions taken. Main areas

discussed in the Youth Forum were environmental

problems, police Service, Challenges to Youth in Upper

South Province and challenges to free and fair elections.

The suggestions and views will be formulated as a

resolution and will be sent to the respective government

offices. After the forum certificates were given to the

participants and HAD‟s Executive Director Mr. Imad

Mohamed thanked all the participants and specially the

organizing partners.

“I choose to know my rights” – Civic Education workshop in Hoadedhdhoo

Transparency Maldives had conducted a workshop in

Hoadedhoo in association with Hoadedhdhoo Association for

Development. The workshop was the part of the “I choose to

know my rights” project

carried out by Transparency

Maldives.

Sessions on human rights,

sysetems of governance and

government of the Maldives and

responsibilities of citizen‟s and

civil society to rectify things.

13 Students of grade 10 , 3 teachers and 9 participants from

NGOs participated in the workshop. Sessions were facilitated by

the experts in the relative field from Transparency Maldives and

president‟s office. Certificates were given to the participants by

Hoadedhoo Association for Development‟s Director General Mr.

Children’s day and Family day colorfully celebrated in Hoadedhdhoo

World Children‟s day and Family day had colorfully

celebrated in Hoadedhdhoo on 15th

May 2010. Gaaf Dhaal

Family and Children‟s Service Centre organized the events in

association with NGOs and government institutions in

Hoadedhdhoo. Huvadhoo Aid, Hoadedhdhoo Island

Development Society, Katolla Boduberu Group, AS Pre

School, Hoadedhdhoo

School and Hoadedhdhoo

School PTA actively

engaged in organizing the events. The celebrations unveiled

at 7:30 am in the morning. Hoadedhdhoo Island Councillor

Mr. Mohamed Ayaz started the celebrations followed by a

special walk. A large number of children and parents

participated in the walk holding message boards and carrying

banners. The walk which started from the jetty area ended at

the football ground. Different games were played in the

football ground which was opened to all the age groups.

Hoadedhdhoo School PTA kept a “gaadiyaa” (a shopping cart) and a donation box in the

football ground to raise funds for PTA.

The most important part of the celebration was the

children‟s evening where NGOs and government

institutions made stalls. Deputy state ministers of

Upper South Province accompanied by staffs of Upper

South Province office visited the children‟s

evening. Different games and activities were

conducted in various stalls. Apart from the stalls, stage

activities took place like dances and drama. The largest

cake baked ever in Hoadedhdhoo was cut in the event

by Deputy State Minister of Upper South Province Mr.

Mohamed Shareef. There was a special evening tea

opened to all at the end of the event

Sustainably Developing Public Spaces in Hoadedhdhoo project agreement officially signed

The agreement of Sustainably Developing Public Spaces in Hoadedhdhoo project had been

officially signed. The agreement between the Island office and Huvadhoo Aid was signed in the

special signing

ceremony which

took place on 15th

May 2010. The

signing ceremony

was held in the

children‟s evening

event which was

held in the jetty

area. Mr. Mohamed

Mauroof , the

assistant Executive Director of Huvadhoo Aid signed on behalf

of Huvadhoo Aid and Mr. Mohamed Ayaz, the island councilor

signed on behalf of Haodedhdhoo Office. Deputy state minister

of Upper South Province and the Director General of the Upper

South province office were also presented at the signing

ceremony. After the signing ceremony Mr. Mohamed Ayaz

spoke on the significance of developing public spaces and

thanked Huvadhoo Aid for the implementation of the project.

Mr. Mohamed Mauroof highlighted that today‟s children are

tomorrow‟s leaders and we need to create a safe and healthy environment to bring them up with

social values. He also spoke on the efforts taken by Huvadhoo Aid( Former Hoadedhdhoo

Association for Development) in the development of Hoadedhdhoo and future programmes of

Huvadhoo Aid.

Sustainably developing public spaces in

Hoadedhdhoo comprises of a community park,

green area, multi- purpose stage and developing

sports courts. Half of the cost of the project is

funded by the government and the other half

funded by Huvadhoo Aid and project partners.

After the signing of the agreement there was a

signing of the Memorandum of Understanding

(MOU) between Huvadhoo Aid and Maldives

Youth Action Network (MYAN) for MYAN to

assist Huvadhoo Aid financially to cover the

cost bearded by Huvadhoo Aid. MR. Mohamed

Mauroof from Huvadhoo Aid and Mr. Ahmed

Ameez , the acting Vice President of MYAN signed the MOU

South Huvadhoo Civil Society dialogue on Environment and Climate Change

Huvadhoo Aid is conducted an atoll level environment forum to be held

on 5th

June 2010 in Hoadedhdhoo to mark the international environment

day.

]”The South Huvadhoo Civil

Society Dialogue on

Environment and Climate change” intends to enhance

and empower the civil society activists to take the

initiative to protect the environment and fight against

climate change at individual and organizational level.

We believe that every one of us have to take the

initiative to see positive change of greening the globe.

After all be the change you want to see in the world.

Members from various NGOs in South Huvadhoo atoll

participated in the forum and officials from government institutions participated as observers .

NGO Representatives presented island papers on environment situation of their respective

islands. A plan of action was formulated by the participants and the NGOs will be implementing

it.

The Just Campaign

„Insaaf‟ or „Just‟ is a campaign by 12 NGOs (Maldivian Democracy

Network (MDN), Madulu, Maldives Aid, Strength of Society, Rights For

All, Huvadhoo Aid, Huvadhoo

Association for National

Development, Maldives Youth

Action Network, Nadella Island

Development Society, Maldives

NGO Federation, Society for

Women Against Drugs and Journey) to urge the

Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to review its

criteria for re-appointing Judges under Article 285

of the Constitution. Huvadhoo Aid carried out a

successful campaignn and more than 300 people signed in the petition.

Huvadhoo Aid Civil Society Partnership Programme 2010

Strengthening the NGO sector and the role of civil society being

one of the strategic objective of the organisation, we have started

Huvadhoo Aid Civil society partnership programme to render

financial assistance to the NGOs. Under this programme we had

assisted NGOs of Huvadhoo Atoll and Addu Atoll in 2009.

In order to strengthen the programme and enhance the

transparency we have opened the request for proposal to all

interested NGOs. Under this programme we assist to the NGOs implementing the projects under

joint partnership with Huvadhoo Aid

Under the programme ,Training minimum of 75 people in basic fabric painting project to be

implemented by the organisation is opened for NGOs to implement under joint partnership with

Huvadhoo Aid.

Huvadhoo Aid signs MOU with Sports Asociation of Hoadedhdhoo

Huvadhoo Aid signed MOU with Sports Association of Hoadedhdhoo. The Ceremony was held

at Huvadhoo Aid administrative office. The purpose of the MOU is to collaborate in the

development of the sport facilities and technical assistance

and providing sports equipments to Sports Association of

Hoadedhdhoo.

MOU was signed by Mr. Mohamed Ayaz, Acting Vice

Chair Person of Sports Association of Hoadedhdhoo and

Assistant Executive Director of Huvadhoo Aid Mr.

Mohamed Mauroof Executive board members of both the

organizations and youth of Hoadedhdhoo attended the

ceremony.

Enhancing Development through Volunteerism Programme

Huvadhoo Aid had started “Enhancing Development through

volunteerism” programme to recruite volunteers from abroad to various

sectors for the development of Huvadhoo atoll Under this programme

a football coach from England had been provided to Sports Association

of Hoadedhdhoo for the Football Coaching Camp. He had also

conducted Physical Education classes for primary grade students of

Hoadedhdhoo School.

National Certificate 3 in Electrician Course

National Certificate 3 in Electrician course conducted by Huvadhoo

Aid under TVET programme is being successfully completed. The

course was held in Huvadhoo Aid Seminar Room . The course was

aimed to equip the youth of Huvadhoo atoll with Technical and

vocational skills . Qualified Instructors took the sessions in the

course. Out of 28 participants from Huvadhoo Atoll 24 participants

secured the competency of Certificate 3.

Basic Fabric Painting Course in Nadella

Basic Fabric Painting course had been sucessfully conductedv in

Nadella. The course was inaugurated by Mr. Mohamed Mauroof,

Aassistant Executive Director of Huvadhoo Aid. Nadella Islan

Development Society (NIDS) conducted the course under

funding by Huvadhoo Aid. The funding was granted under the

Huvadhoo Aid Civil Society Partnership programme. Huvadhoo

Aid is assisting the NGOs based in Huvadhoo atoll financially

and technically. More partnership projects in different islands of

Huvadhoo atoll will take place in the future.

Huvadhoo Aid Civic Education Programme – Hoadedhdhoo, Nadella and Fiyoary

Huvadhoo Aid Civic Education Programme had

begun.The programme was launched on the

International Day of Democracy. A session on

democracy had been conducted for grade 10 students of

Hoadedhdhoo School to mark the International day of

Democracy. The session was held at Huvadhoo Aid

seminar room. Under the programme sessions on

democracy, free and fair elections and challenges to

free and fair elections had been conducted in the island

of Nadella on 16th

September 2010. The sessions were

conducted in collaboration with Nadella Island

Development Society(NIDS) , Nadella Ekuveringe Rooh(NER) and Nadella Zuvaanunge

Rooh(NZR). Grade 10 students of Nadella School and youth participated in the sessions

conducted at Nadella School. The same sessions were also conducted in Fiyoary on 17th

September 2010 in collaboration with Fiyoary Ekuveri Zuvaanunge Club. Under the programme

sessions will be conducted in other islands of Huvadhoo Atoll as well.

South Huvadhoo Boat Conference on Environment and Climate change 10-10-10, Hoadedhdhoo

Huvadhoo Aid conducted „South Huvadhoo Boat

Conference on Environment and Climate Change‟. The

conference was held at Hoadedhdhoo Lagoon in small

boats. The conference was inaugurated by the Deputy

State Minister Upper South Province Mr. Mohamed

Shareef. G.Dh Atoll councilor Mr. Mohamed Hassan

Didi also participated in the conference. Three papers

were discussed in the conference. The papers were role

of citizens in protecting environment, role of NGOs in protecting environment and role of

government in protecting environment. The conference was winded up by signing the resolution

which included 10 demands to the government and international community.

Link Madaveli Campaign

In intention of enforcing the government to link the islands Madaveli and Hoadedhdhoo by a

sand bridge and reclaim the land for the people of Madavli the southern lagoon of Madaveli,

Huvadhoo Aid had started a campaign named as “ Link Madavli Campaign”. The Campaign was

inaugurated by G.Dh Atoll Councillor Mr. Mohamed Hassan Didi. A special blog for this

campaign was launched in the ceremony. The url of this blog is www.linkmadavali.com . Under

this campaign more events will take place.

Ratufihaara Mas Race 2010

The Second Ratufihaara Mas Race had been conducted as apart of Al-Luha Eid celebrations

2010. Ratu Fihaara Mas Race (Fishing Competition) was started 2009 to open a door for

fishermen, youth and kids to compete in a fishing

competition. The compettition comprises of three

categories namely, Dhoani Category, Dinghy category and

jetty category. “Ratu Fihaara”( One of the best Retail shop

in Hoadedhdhoo) is the main sponsor if this competition.

This year apart from our main sponsor we also had a co -

sponsor “Kailaan”( famous retail shop in Male‟). Cash

prizes and valuable prizes from Ratufihaara had

been awarded to the champions of each category.

HAD Teen Futsal Tournament 2010

The annual Teen Futsal tournament conducted by

Huvadhoo Aid had been completed. The

tournament which take place in the annual school

holidays aims to improve the footballing skills of

teenagers at the same time targeting to socialise the

teenagers to promote the leadership. This year a total of

five teams competed in the tournament and matches

were played in the league system. With maximum

points Beerafanna Sports Club and the second

maximum points FC Benfica played in the final match.

Beerafnna defeated FC Benifica by and Beerafanna

Sports Club was crowned as the Champions of the tournament for the first time. Ali Hassan of

FC Benfica was named as the player of the tournament.

Empowering Youth Human Rights NGOs Workshop

Huvadhoo Aid had conducted Empowering Human

Rights Work Shop. Participants from the NGOs based

in Hoadedhdhoo and other Islands of Huvadhoo Atoll

participated in the two day workshop conducted in

Huvadhoo Aid Seminar Room. The sessions in the

first day focused on Basics of Human rigts, Human

Rights Commission of the Maldives, International

conventions, role of NGOs in mainstreaming human

rights. The session on the second day of the workshop

covered the capacity building of NGOs like strategic

planning, project management, Financial

management and proposal writing. This workshop is the part of the “Empowering Youth Human

Rights NGOs project funded by AusAID

Participation in Trainings, Camps , Conferences and Forums

Participation in awareness on constitution programme

Ten members of Hoadedhdhoo Association for

Development took part in the Awareness on Constitution

program conducted by Maldives Detainee Network in

collaboration with Huvadhoo Association for National

Development(HAND).

Two sessions which

were held at

Misbaahul Hudhaa School emphasized on Chapter 2 of the

Constitution “Fundamental rights and Freedoms”

Participants presented role plays related to various rights to

the people and facilitators answered the questions asked by

the participants.

Exexutive Director addresses in the WORLD PEACE CONFERENCE 2010 Kochi, India

The Executive Director of Hoadedhoo Association for

Development(HAD) had addressed in the World Peace

Conference in Kochi, India organized by Rotary

International (Rotary District 3201), India in association

with International Council of Social Welfare(ICSW). The

conference was inaugurated by Kerala Governor Hon‟ble

Gavai.

Imad spoke

on the topic

“Building Bridges for Peace-Imparting

Leadership” In this regard he spoke on how HAD

defines peace building and the peace building

approach HAD employs to successfully attain the

goals of the organization. Speaking on HAD‟s

strength to bring individuals, civil society

organizations, businesses, government officials, and

international supporters together he highlighted successful programmes such as Huvadhoo Atoll

Climate Change Action Campaign & Lagoon Conference and Walk Maldives.

He also said that the primary means in which HAD forges these collaborative relationships is

through open, honest communication and dialogue which enables every peace building activity .

Highlighting on this he spoke on how HAD carries out the communication. After the speech he

answered to the questions posed by the participants

South Asian Youth Camp 2010 – Pune India

Members from Hoadedhdhoo Association for Development(HAD) and Maldives Youth

Action Network (MYAN) had participated from

Maldives in the South Asian Youth Camp held in

Pune from 1 February 2010 to 5 February 2010.

The camp which was organised by the Centre for

Youth Development and Activities (CYDA)

intended to bring youth of different South Asian

countries together to discuss diversity, gender,

democracy, good governance and

environment.55 youngsters from India,

Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal Bhutan,

Afghanistan and Mauritius participated in the

camp. The camp was inaugurated by the

honorable Mayor of Pune Mr. Mohan

Singh Raajpal. Acting Vice President of

MYAN and HAD‟s Director General Mr.

Ahmed Ameez spoke on behalf of all

youth participants in the inaugural

ceremony . In his speech he mentioned

about the role of youth in the

development and reforms in the society.

He highlighted the example of the role of

youth in bringing a modern democracy to

the country by bringing an end to a 3

decade dictatorship.

The camp comprised of skills building

workshops held throughout the camp where

participants were divided into four groups

namely film making, newsletter making, theater

and dancing. In addition to this Sessions on

diversity, democracy, civil society, global

warming and role of media were conducted

which were facilitated by the experts of the

field. At the visit to the MIT School of

government Ahmed Ameez spoke on the

challenges in consolidating democracy in the

Maldives.

The colorful closing ceremony was held on 5th February where the skills building groups

presented their work. Apart from these stunning cultural

dances from Afghanistan was presented by Afghan

students in Pune. One participant from each country

spoke on the experience from the camp in which all of

them described the camp as a fruitful program. In this

regard HAD‟s Director – Program Development Mr.

Hussain Fayaz stated that the knowledge and

experiences he got from the camp were valuable and he

would utilize it in bringing developments to his

community. He also called upon South Asian countries

to work against global warming which is related to Maldivian‟s right to live

International Conference on Engaging Youth in Crime Prevention

Two representatives from Huvadhoo Aid participated in the

Conference on engaging

youth in crime prevention

conducted in Kulaur Lumpur,

Malaysia .The two

representatives were Mr.

Ahmed Ameez, Assistant Executive Director and Mr.

Abdhulla Areesh,Director Finance and

Adiministration. Honourable Minister of State for Human Resource Youth and Sports , Mr.

Mohamed Rasheed Hussain also partcipated from Maldives.

Executive Director participated in the Human Right NGO Network meeting

Executive Director, Mr. Imad Mohamed has

participated in the NGO Network meeting held on 7-8

August 2010 by Human Right Commission of

Maldives. Mr. Imad has announced the Empowering

Youth Human Right NGOs project during the

meeting and call for collaboration and cooperation

between civil society organizations based in Southern

Atolls. He has also mentioned Huvadhoo Aid‟s

willingness to support Human Right Commission of

the Maldives, and members of NGO Network.

The main objective of this meeting is to discuss and resolve ways in which HRCM can assist the

member of the NGO Network in their work, how NGOs can support HRCM‟s works and how

the member NGOs can collaborate with each other. In addition to this, HRCM informed the

participants on various human rights related topics.

Human Right NGO Networks is a network created by Human Right Commission of Maldives in

2009 which currently has more than 45 NGOs.

Huvadhoo Aid participated in workshop on Consolidating Democracy and Human Rights through Empowerment of Civil Society

Two members from Huvadhoo Aid participated

in three day training workshop titled

“Consolidating Democracy and Human Rights

through Empowerment of Civil Society” from

the 27th to the 29th of September, conducted

by Maldivian Democracy Network (MDN) in

collaboration with the Asian Forum for Human

Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) .

At the opening ceremony, two publications by

MDN; the second edition of “Asaasee

Hagguthakaai Minivankan” (“Basic Rights and

Freedoms”) and the 2010 Maldives report to the Asian NGOs Network on National Human

Rights Institutions (ANNI) entitled „Needing to Scale the Communication Barrier‟ was launched

by the UN‟s Special Advisor on Social Cohesion and Governance Mr. Ferdinand Von Habsburg.

The participants of the workshop were provided with an overview of the national mechanism on

democracy and human rights including the National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) as well

as the UN Mechanism and their role in defending democracy and human rights. The participants

also took part in developing a strategy to contribute in consolidation of democracy and human

rights in the Maldives. The interactive training drew out numerous issues of concern to those

working in the human rights field in the Maldives and provided an opportunity for participants to

share their thoughts on how challenges could be overcome and to also share success stories from

the field.

The workshop was attended by MDNs atoll based Human Rights Defenders (HRDs), local

Human Rights NGOs, Staff from the Police Integrity Commission and staff from the Human

Rights Commission of the Maldives.

Huvadhoo Aid participated in the Workshop on civil society development (18-20 October 2010)‏

Huvadhoo Aid participated in the workshop on civil society development organized by UNDP

Maldives, held in Male, from 18th

to 20th

October 2010. The three days workshop is to provide a

conceptual guideline to NGOs on the subject of human rights, good governance, gender equality

and youth development. In addition, the workshop includes sessions on NGO Management,

Project Formulation, Monitoring & Evaluation and Budget Formulation. The purpose of the

workshop is to provide guidance to NGOs for the Support to Civil Society Development Project

of UNDP.

Three members of Huvadhoo Aid participate in the South Asian Youth Summit on Climate Change- Colombo Sri Lanka

Three members of the Huvadhoo Aid, including the Executive Director, Imad Mohamed

participated in the three-day “South Asian Youth Summit on Climate Change 2010

(SAYSoCC10)” held on 27-30th

October 2010 in Colombo. The summit was organized by the

regional network of South Asian climate organizations.

Five Maldivian delegates attended the summit as a member of local NGO, Maldivian Youth

Climate Network (MYCN), since MYCN represents Maldives at the summit.

The summit was ended on 30th

October 2010 with cooperative step against the various climate

change issues faced by South Asia. Maldives would benefit from the summit as information and

experiences were shared by the youth from

different countries.

The South Asian Youth Summit on Climate

Change (SAYSoCC) is a platform that aims to

bring together young people from across South

Asia in contributing all that they can to the

collective global effort to redress the climate

crisis and environmental degradation.

SAYSoCC is a joint-project of the South

Asian Youth Climate Movement (SAYCM),

which is a consortium of youth-driven

organizations in South Asia that work to

address climate change and other environmental issues in the region. Afghanistan, India,

Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka are the eight nations that will be

working on this endeavor.

Huvadhoo Aid participated in the “NGO Capacity Development Workshop on Proposal Development”

Huvadhoo Aid participated in the “NGO Capacity Development Workshop on Proposal

Development” organized and facilitated by United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime

(UNODC) , on 31st October and 1

st November 2010, at UN Building, Male‟.

This programme is aims to strengthen capacity of NGOs working in this field, and identifying

NGOs who will be as implementing partners to initiate/strengthen comprehensive community

based approaches towards drug use prevention, treatment and care services for the drug using

communities and their co-dependents.

The workshop was inaugurated by Vice President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Waheed Hassan

Manik. Speaking to inaugurate the workshop Dr Mohamed Waheed said active participation of

civil society organisations was vital for the efforts to combat and prevent drug abuse in the

Maldives.

Vice President Dr Waheed added that the current drug prevention programme was formulated

with the intention of providing more assistance to NGOs to increase their financial and technical

capacities to strengthen and widen their participation in preventing drug abuse and rehabilitating

addicts back into the society.

The two-day workshop that began yesterday is a part of UNODC technical cooperation project –

“Strengthening the national response to combat drug abuse in the Maldives” – which was signed

between UNODC and the government on 19 January 2010. The project is funded by the

European Union

“Training on prevention, treatment and care/rehabilitation of drug use/users” Chennai India

Two members from Huvadhoo Aid participated in “Training on prevention, treatment and

care/rehabilitation of drug use/users” workshop

conducted in Chennai, India from 13 December 2010 to

17 December 2010. This workshop was conducted to the

the NGOs which were funded by United Nations Office

on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to conduct 1 year drug

prevention and rehabilitation project in the islands next

year. The workshop was organised by TTK hospital in

partnership with Drug Prevention and Rehabilitation

Services (DDPRS) Maldives and European Union. NGOs will commence the project in January

2011.

Institutional Development

In the year 2010 many efforts had been put for the

institutional development. Financial management

structure had been reviewed and formulated in an

accountable way. This had been followed and it was

very successful. The whole administration and

programme co-ordination structure was changed,

enhancing young volunteers to take leadership in

various programmes with the support of the seniors.

Consultations with stakeholders became a prime tool

for formulating projects and conducting programmes.

Restructuring of HAD was at the heart of

the instituitional Development. Under the

restruction process the name of

Hoadedhdhoo Association for

Development had been changed to

Huvadhoo Aid from 3 May 2010.

Inauguration of the HAD Volunteers Co

is a new mile stone in the development of

HAD. Our goal is to reach to a third

generation NGO by next year.

Infrastructure Development

Strting HAD Accommodation Block

The work of the second phase of HAD‟s Resource Centre comprising of a seminar room and

accommodation block is in progress. The work of two storey

accommodation block is in progress. 25 percent of the mason work

had already been completed. The main challenge to the speed of

work is the unavailability of our members due to busy work

schedule at their job.

The first phase of the Resource centre was completed in 2008 in

which the organisation‟s administrative office had been constructed

under Community Organisation Development Council (CODC)

funding. The second phase is funded by NZAID

Upgrading Seminar Room

HAD‟s seminar room is the main venue for the training programmes, meetings and forums.

Since we conduct atoll level programmes the upgrading of

seminar room started by late February especially for

preparing for the mega event “Go Hoadedhdhoo

Friendship Camp. The incomplete walls on the sides were

built and the seminar room was fully plastered by mid-

June. All the works were done by our skillful members.

Number of The seminar room is used by other institutions

as well.

Upgrading HAD BIZ

HAD BIZ, the business branch of Huvadhoo Aid had been

upgraded in the year 2010. The building is also used as the

p roject Implementation Unit. A store room was made to

store the goods of HAD BIZ which was previously sored in

small room in a house of one of our members. The outer

wall is of HAD BIZ is being plastered and painted. This

building is now used as the office of HAD Volunteers Co

as well

Internships

Huvadhoo Aid‟s Director Programme Development,

Huvadhoo Aid Mr. Hussain Fayaz left for a 10 month

internship in Transparency International Bangladesh.

Before joining the TIB Team in DAKA. Mr Fayaz

attended a month long training session in Bangkok,

Thailand. Now he is working in TIB. Eventhough he is

in Bangladesh we get lot of support from him in our

various programmes

Success in the NGO Sector

Executive Director elected as the Vice President of Maldives NGO Federation

HAD‟s Executive Director Mr. Imad Mohamed has been elected as the vice president of

Maldives NGO Federation (MNF) in the annual

meeting held in Holiday Inn from 18th March to 20th

March .He won the election by defeating Mohamed

Zuhair from VINARES by 13 votes to 9 votes.

Maldives NGOs Federation comprises of 42 NGOs

from Male‟

and the

Islands in a

vision of

developing

social

development area as a separate sector. In the annual

meeting apart from electing members to the council a

strategic plan was formulated for the upcoming 5

years.

Behind our Success

The main asset we have is our valuable members especially the active members. The Executive

Committee had played a significant role in all the programmes and projects of Huvadhoo Aid

and we are proud of our Executive Director‟s visionary and wisdom. Our programmes would not

have been conducted without the participants. The participants and the people of different islands

of Huvadhoo atoll and their support is drifted us towards success. The stake holders and

especially partner NGOs played an important role in our programmes. We are extremely thankful

to the donors and the government of Maldives. Insha Allah Huvadhoo Aid will succeed in it‟s
