K eith Reid, a resident of the Domain Macquarie Place nursing home in Cameron Park, chose a very unusual way to celebrate his 90th birthday. Cheered on by family, friends, staff and residents from the nursing home, he completed a record-breaking tandem
skydive over Maitland. The World War Two veteran became Australia’s oldest skydiver with
a dive from 14,000 feet which included a minute’s freefall before he parachuted to the ground.
Not only had he never previously tried skydiving, but he hadn’t even set foot inside an aeroplane! “When I told my son I wanted to skydive for my 90th he thought I was crazy,” said Keith. “But I knew that this would be the perfect way to celebrate such a momentous birthday.”

M aitland City Council is pushing ahead with its plans to introduce a differential pricing
system at the city’s tip, despite calls from some councillors for more information.
Under the proposal, users of the Mount Vincent Waste Management Centre would be charged $262 per
tonne of waste disposed. The current system charges $23 for sedans and station wagons, and $66 for vans, utes and trailers.
The proposal comes in the light of a report that determined the facility would reach capacity in three years. According to Council, a new fee system would encourage users to sort out their recyclables that can be dumped for free before entering, rather than placing all rubbish in landfill. The majority of councillors are in favour of the proposal.

“This is a proactive move,” Councillor Robert Aitchison said.
“It’s about time we started doing something about this – we have enough initiatives already where residents can dump for free.”
However, Councillors Nicole Penfold, Philip Penfold and Henry Meskauskas voted against the motion, saying more information was needed about the average amounts dumped before a decision should be made.
“In the long run what they’re
trying to do is good – trying to push recycling and reduce the filling of the tip,” Councillor Nicole Penfold told the Post. “But what was missing from the report was information and a comparison of average trailer weights.”
The Council also voted to demolish the caretaker’s cottage and associated structure located on the tip site. The differential fee structure will be on exhibition until November 25, before being implemented on January 1, 2014.

Let me make it clear that this is not a criticism of the councillors in our area – Newcastle, Lake Macquarie,
Maitland and Cessnock. The people elected in these local government areas are all decent, honest people. They make themselves readily available and reporters at this newspaper have no trouble gaining access to them when seeking comment on various issues.
But in every electorate at every council meeting we see the major political parties banding together when voting on issues. Their views seemingly shaped by what their colleagues up the line at state and federal have deemed as policy.
Of course there is a need for political parties at state and national level, where a successful government needs a unified team working with consistency across the whole area they cover.
I realise that you would still have disagreements and differing points of view if every councillor was an independent and no doubt unofficial alliances would be formed, but you
would at least have greater confidence that decisions and opinions were being formed here in the Hunter rather than in Sydney or Canberra.

for the Jets. The defence is working quite well – no goals conceded in the past 210 minutes of action. Add in the return of star striker Emile Heskey and there should be better days ahead,
hopefully starting with the local derby against the Mariners at Hunter Stadium on Saturday night.
Jets coach Gary van Egmond has come under plenty of fire after the winless start to the season, but surely he deserves more than three games before being judged. Relegating Michael Bridges and Zenon Caravella from the starting line-up shows he is prepared to think outside the box in the search for results.

As the temperature soared past 36 degrees last week and Hunter residents sweltered while bushfires
raged across the region, Beresfield Swimming Centre remained closed.
One of many local services on the chopping block as part of Newcastle City Council’s penny-pinching 2013/2014 budget, the pool finally opened for the summer season on Monday, a full five weeks after the season began at the Mayfield, Stockton and Wallsend Swimming Centres and more than two months after Lambton pool.
Beresfield Swimming Club president, Greg Skinner, told the Post that despite Newcastle City Council agreeing to open the pool for the swimming club on Friday evenings throughout October, the shortened season has had an enormous impact on the club.
“It’s a little early to tell what the impact will be on our season but in term of overall club numbers we are about half the numbers we were last year,” he said.

Maitland City Council is warning residents against purchasing
backyard pools for Christmas if they are unable to bear the cost of fencing.
Under the new Swimming Pools Act 2012, all backyard swimming pools that can be filled to a depth of 300 millimetres or more are to be registered. Existing pools were required to be registered by yesterday, October 29.
David Simm, Council’s Manager Development and Environment said that a lot of pool owners may not be aware of the new legislation.
“The general public are often unaware of this requirement as inflatable or portable swimming pools are sold at a wide variety of stores which may not sell swimming pool fencing,” he said.
“Purchasing and maintaining a swimming pool fence will increase the cost of owning a portable or inflatable pool and should be factored into the overall cost.”
Pools can be registered at www.swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au, or through a form which can be obtained from Council.

Mr Skinner said the Council needed to engage with the community to find a solution that allowed Council to save money and but also ensured that Beresfield residents had access to
the pool throughout the warmer months. “I think there would be a lot of anger from residents in the first instance but there are a number of solutions that would satisfy both parties.”
Mr Skinner suggested Council explore the cost-saving measures like installing ticket machines at the pool and using a swipe-card entry system to cut down on labour
costs, implementing coaching and learn to swim services, installing a water park or connect with local sporting groups to encourage patronage.
Mr Skinner urged Beresfield residents to visit the pool as much as possible this summer, to improve the chances of the pool returning to its full summer season at the end of next year.

Take a minute to hoist up your skirts or drop your daks and have a long hard look at your legs. If you’ve got two of them, what do
you do with them? Obviously transport - they afford us the cheapest option going. They allow you to drive, dance, play sport and, right now given how hot it’s been, they are at their absolute best dangling in the water off a pier or in a pool forcing our body temperatures down.
Legs have enjoyed being one of the most sung about body parts as well. Off the top of my head I can easily name dedications from some of the biggest names in rock royalty; Queen, ZZ Top, Rod Stewart, Van Halen, ACDC and John Mellencamp have all, at some point in their careers been sitting there, maybe even cross-legged, going ‘what the heck can I write about now?” and then BAM .. another song about legs was birthed. (Bonus points if you can name each artists’ leg song)
Legs are a star body part but there are two different camps our legs fall into. There’s legs who like to run and there’s the other mob. My mob! The ‘legs are for preventing my bottom dragging on the ground’ brigade.
Sadly though, my mob of non-runners is being overtaken at lightening pace by this new breed of people - the fun runners. Men, women and kids of all ages are lacing themselves into fluoro footwear and sweating themselves silly.
Just last week 1000 odd people, and I do mean odd because it was a scorching day, competed in the Fernleigh 15. The brainchild of star runner Scott Westcott, the Fernleigh 15 is now well and truly
on the calendar each year so there’s no running, or as I prefer - walking swiftly, away from it.
Which brings me to my next point; events is plural. Barely a weekend goes by
without something on offer for our fast-footed friends. There’s Hill to Harbour, Wollombi Wild Ride, Port Stephens Summer Runs. In fact, add in Park Run - the free, 5k weekly timed runs operating all over and we are an exhausted bunch.
Granted there are worse things people could be doing with their time like sitting sedentary, stuffing themselves stupid with coffee and cake but enough about me, I want you runners to know just how harmful to your health running can be.
Why, just last year when I signed on for the weekly Newcastle Cross Country events at Blackbutt, I ran straight through a bull ant nest and ended up with ants where no creature had ever ventured; neither man nor doctor!!
That said, truth be told, quite simply I am jealous. I want to want to run because the title suggests it’s fun. So here’s my pledge. Instead of playing dress-ups in running clobber I might actually get them a little sweat soaked. Who knows? I might even enjoy it or at least have to be resuscitated by someone cute who does.

Did you hear the one about the drunk who rode his horse backwards?
While that may sound like the setup for a joke, it’s a real story from the colourful history books of Morpeth Courthouse, which celebrated its 150th anniversary this month.
Built in 1862, the courthouse on Swan Street, opposite the Morpeth Bridge, began operating in 1863 as a Court of Petty Sessions, which dealt with less serious crimes. Due to the 18 hotels operating in Morpeth in the 1860s, most of these crimes were alcohol-related.
“It must have been quite needy,” Volunteer Curator of the Morpeth Museum, Sue Thomas, said. “It was very busy, but it was all lesser crimes.”
Most of these lesser crimes pertained to public drunkenness and threatening language, but the court also settled disputes over animals and punished parents for truant children.
Although those crimes sound pretty run of the mill, a person could also front up to the court for swimming in the river after dark, swimming in the presence of women or walking too far from their horse, but prostitution was completely legal. The court was closed in 1942, but the building has been in continuous use since then. “It’s had a fairly checkered career.”
Ms Thomas said. “It’s been a recruiting office, a baby health centre and a library, and is now the Morpeth Museum.”
As for that drunk who rode his horse backwards, he employed that method of transport as a means of evading arrest.
While being drunk in public was an offence, the backwards horse riding was not.

Maitland City Council has openly discussed with the community the financial challenges faced in sustainably delivering services into the future. Examination of all options for savings and revenue, and a significant period of consultation, has led to a proposal to increase total rate revenue by 8.35% per year for seven years – a cumulative 58.45% increase. This is 36.05% above the expected standard rate peg for the period and would be retained permanently in the rate base after the seven years. The rate increase would apply to the total rating revenue collected by Council and commence from the 2014/15 financial year.The $117 million in revenue generated would allow Council’s current services and service levels to be delivered as programmed, as well as enhancements in the following areas: · Roads, kerbs and gutters and drains · Footpaths · Bus shelters · Community buildings, public toilets and amenities · Off road recreational cycleways, trails and shared pathways

“But at least I kept the bias to the right.”Mr O’Farrell’s swing was a hit with
the almost 100-strong crowd who had gathered to celebrate the club’s centenary, as well as honouring past club presidents through a blazer presentation and to present a $50,000 cheque to Maitland Hospital on behalf of the bowling club, which will used to further patient care.
Despite being in the midst of a tour of the state’s bushfire-affected areas, Mr O’Farrell said that he, along with Member for Maitland Robyn Parker, wanted to honour the contribution clubs make to the community,
“Clubs are a part of the state’s history, and this club is a part of Maitland’s history,” he said.

T he Christmas period is upon us. It is a time for fellowship, but it is also a time when people get
carried away with drinking. Most people when going out drinking make a plan to get home, but not all. Are you or members of your family getting into cars with drivers who have been drinking?
In 2002 I had the horrific experience of attending a motor vehicle collision in a small rural NSW town where two local young people were killed and one was severely and permanently injured. The driver who was found to be well in excess of the legal alcohol limit and speeding was slightly injured in the collision and eventually spent some time in prison. Apart from attending the collision scene I also had the melancholic experience of informing the parents of the death of their children.
Every year NSW passengers die in motor vehicle collisions where the driver has been drinking alcohol prior to getting behind the wheel. All too often it is young people, in an unguarded moment
behind the wheel and in the passenger’s seat.
The RTA and Police are constantly trying to get the message out in relation to drink driving and its consequences. Education and random breath testing has reduced alcohol-related road deaths from 350 in 1982 to 70 last year. But 70 is still way too many.
Now, as it always has been, is the time for passengers to say no to riding with intoxicated drivers. Perhaps parents should be having this conversation with their children.
Earlier this month a driver with an alcohol reading in excess of four times the legal limit crashed his vehicle into a telephone pole in Weston. At the time there was a male passenger in the vehicle. Fortunately no one was injured, but they were so, so lucky.
Unfortunately there things happen all the time, but not always with a happy ending. So now is the time, before the Christmas onslaught to have a think about your options, get a Plan B and don’t get in a car next to a drunk driver.

T he nominations for Maitland’s Citizen of the Year have now been opened and I would like
to take this opportunity to urge people across the city to nominate a mate.
We all have friends who go above and beyond, proving their commitment to the people around them and these are the type of people who may be eligible to receive recognition of this kind.
There are three categories for which a resident can be nominated: Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and the Junior Citizen Award. Nominations can recognise citizens excelling at any number of activities including the arts, sports, schools, environment or community service. It can be for a one-off achievement, or a series of achievements experienced over a number of years.
Last year we had a number of high-calibre nominations, with
the hard-working Max Ray being named Citizen of the Year. Max has lived in Maitland since 1960 and is an iconic face for many people who grew up in the city both through his time at Cappers Hardware and later at Ian Cameron’s Bike Shop. Outside his working life, Max has been heavily involved in a number of Masonic lodges, Probus and many other community groups.
Now in his eighties, he remains committed to our city and helping those within it. This year I look forward to reading many more stories of people just like Max, one of whom will become the Citizen of the Year for 2013. Of course, we are also looking for inspirational stories about the young people and those under 18 in Maitland who are already making a difference.

T his year may have seen the greatest change in their unrivalled 20-year run at the top of the children’s entertainment
tree in Australia, but the Wiggles show no sign of slowing down.
Having just returned from an eight week stint in North America, which saw the foursome play to sold out crowds, the group are getting ready to get back on the road throughout December.
New Wiggle, Simon Pryce, told the Post how he was settling into life in the red skivvy and how fans were getting used to seeing new faces on stage.
“It’s been really positive actually, the kids have been really good about it.
“The children are quite happy – they actually see the change as something fun to do, learning new names and new characters and things so they have kind of embraced it.
“A lot of girls come dressed up as Emma with bows in their hair and little yellow shirts and black dresses and bows on their shoes, it’s really lovely,” he said.
Anthony, Emma, Lachlan and Simon will visit Newcastle this December, bringing their ‘Ready, Steady, Wiggle’ tour to Newcastle Entertainment Centre on Thursday, December 19.
Mr Pryce said the show will feature festive favourites like, ‘Go Santa Go’ and ‘Here Come the Reindeer’, just in time for Christmas, as well as Wiggles classics like ‘Fruit Salad’, ‘Hot Potato’ and ‘Rock-a-bye Your Bear.’

T he NSW Government has approved a $100 million train support facility at Hexham, which will increase performance
in the coal rail network.Freight transport and infrastructure
company Aurizon will build the facility.Roads and Ports Minister Duncan Gay
said moving coal from mine to port is our state’s single largest freight task and the NSW Government supports the efforts of the Hunter Valley coal industry in increasing efficiency and capacity in the Hunter Valley coal rail network.
“Investment in infrastructure like this is critical for developing an efficient and effective freight network across NSW,” he said
Mr Gay said construction of the new Aurizon facility would stimulate jobs and provide long term economic growth for the Hunter Valley coal industry.
The Minister said that construction work was expected to commence in early November with completion of the provisioning facility anticipated in October 2014 and the combined maintenance facility by February 2015.

Even if you aren’t close enough to all these fires to be in immediate danger from the flames, everyone
should still be aware of the dangers from the smoke.
As I was driving through the smoke recently I saw a man running along the side of the road.
Far from looking like he was running for his life in some emergency, he was all dressed up in jogging gear with his water bottle belt and headband on.
I’m all for exercise but there is a time and a place.
Each breath full of smoke you suck into your lungs is bringing in a lot of junk your body doesn’t want. To go out into it and purposefully increase your breathing rate is just silly.
Doctors are urging people to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid exercising outside as heavy smoke rises above bushfire-hit NSW.
More than 200 homes have been
lost in the Blue Mountains region west of Sydney.
NSW Health says many areas in the state are experiencing poor to very poor air quality, even hundreds of kilometres away from the fires.
The Australian Medical Association’s NSW president, Brian Owler, says heavy exercise should be avoided. “The last thing you want to do is to go out for a jog when you’re breathing in such heavy pollution,” he said.
Professor Wayne Smith from NSW Health urged asthma sufferers to follow their asthma action plan.
Asthmatics should also ensure they have their puffers with them at all times.
“Fine particles can irritate the lungs of healthy adults, so it is best to avoid any prolonged outdoor exercise,” he said.
Exercise is great, but use your head as to what type and when it will give you the most benefit.

To the movies: How you wear your shirt to the movies depends on who you are going with but for me, the movies is generally a casual experience. I would wear my shirt tucked in to a pair of jeans, with a belt or tucked in to a pretty skirt. If I wanted to dress up my outfit I would add a long necklace.
To dinner: Whether you wear your shirt with a skirt or pants, the important things to remember for a dinner date or out to a bar is the accessories. Start with heels, a clutch and classy accessories – I would wear my hair up with statement earrings and some silver or gold cuffs on my wrists.
To the beach: Wear your white shirt unbuttoned and thrown over a pair of swimmers or a maxi dress; this way it is easy to pull off so that you can play in the waves.

S ince first bursting onto the scene as the frontwoman for ‘80s funk-poppers I’m Talking in the early 80s, Kate
Ceberano has never been one to shy away from a musical challenge.
Post I’m Talking, the singer has tackled various genres including pop, jazz and soul as well as various forays into theatre (Jesus Christ Superstar) and film (Dust Off The Wings).
Now, almost 30 years since the release of I’m Talking’s first EP, Ceberano’s musical curiosity is still alive and well, as evidenced on her latest long player and first album of new material in more than a decade, ‘Kensal Road’.
‘Kensal Road’ is a refreshingly organic album, that is awash with lush harmonisation and lashings of ukulele, mandolin and guitar that belies her Aussie pop princess tag.
Ceberano will be in town this weekend to give Novocastrians an up close and personal taste of ‘Kensal Road’ and she said that the prospect of visiting regional centres was an enticing one.
“I haven’t really done a full regional tour in so long – being a parent can make things like that difficult, but I’m just so excited to be getting out there with the new album –it’s going to be a great show.”
Ceberano, who recorded the album in the UK with producer James Bryan (Nelly Furtado, Lisa Marie Presley) said that her latest album could be her most truthful yet and that she was eternally grateful to her label, Sony, for allowing her to spread her creative wings even more.
“Yeah we really wanted to capture a very raw and unaffected vibe on the album which I really hope shines through,” she said.
“I also really wanted to make the most truthful album that I could. I mean, there is great power in truth but if there is no one on the other end to hear it, what’s the point? Which is why I am so grateful to everyone at Sony for supporting me in this – they’ve been wonderful.
So, after many years in the business and with such hits as ‘Bedroom Eyes’’, ‘Pash’and ‘Every Little Thing’ under her belt, what is it about this music lark that keeps Ceberano so passionate?
“For me live performance is everything – it’s almost inexplicable. I just couldn’t imagine doing anything else,” she said.
“Also I put a lot of it down to good fortune – I mean, I came from what was essentially an avant garde disco band that flew in the face of pretty much everything that was going on at the time and I feel very fortunate that I’m still doing it all these years later.”

Sophie Stanwell was the University of Newcastle’s stand-out athlete at the 2012 Australian University Games, winning Gold
in the heptathlon with a point score of 5109. Her result helped the University athlete’s team to an overall Australian Universities ranking of 8th.
Sophie continued her success in the following athletics season, taking out the NSW State Heptathlon title in January 2013 at the NSW State Multi Championships in Sydney.
In February she claimed the title
again at the Victorian State Multi Championships in Melbourne, where she recorded a World Universiade qualifying score of 5556.
In July 2013 Sophie represented Australia at the Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. Recording a result of ninth overall and a score of 5519, Sophie achieved season best results in five of the seven disciplines. Six of the eight athletes ahead of her were 2012 London Olympians.
Sophie’s dominance in the heptathlon over the last 12 months has elevated her
to the number one Australian ranked heptathlete, and number seven all-time NSW heptathlete. Her achievements have seen her nominated as a finalist for the University of Newcastle Sports Person of the Year and she has been awarded a University Blue for her outstanding performance while enrolled at, and contributing to, the University of Newcastle.
Sophie has recently been recognized by Athletics NSW as an athlete likely to soon represent Australia at World Championship Level.
