Daylight robbery

P olice are seeking information from the public after a brazen daylight armed robbery at Stockland Green Hills last week.

At around 2pm on Tuesday, August 5, a cash-in-transit officer was making a cash delivery to the Commonwealth Bank at the East Maitland shop-ping centre when the robbery occurred.

“Whilst he was parking the vehicle in the carpark he was approached by a male person,” Central Hunter police duty officer Chief Inspector Greg Lindsell told media last week. “That male person produced what has been described as a pistol and forced entry into the vehicle. He then asked the driver to take him to a location nearby.”

The vehicle was stopped at the other end of the carpark where the robber stole a strongbox contain-ing an undisclosed amount of cash and placed it in a trolley before making his escape.

He was last seen on Stronach Avenue. Police estab-lished a search radius and brought in a dog but were unable to locate the man. Police have also reviewed CCTV footage from the centre. No shots were fired and the cash-in-transit officer was unharmed.

Police are seeking a man who may be able to assist with their enquiries, who has been described as having tan skin and was wearing a plain black hooded jumper, with the hood raised, and big black glasses.

Police are also urging anyone with information about the man or incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The changing face of state politics in our area

What will the political landscape look like in our region after the state election on March 28 next year?

The fallout from the ongoing revelations at the ICAC inquiry give Labor candidates Jodie Harrison (Charlestown) and Tim Crackenthorp (Newcastle) the inside running to reclaim both seats from the Liberals.

It will take one hell of a campaign for the Liber-als to regain the public’s confidence.

Both electorates had been long-term Labor strongholds before changing hands at the 2011 election as part of a huge swing statewide.

Andrew Cornwell made the right choice in the end to not stand at the next election.

He had vowed to continue serving the people of Charlestown, but it was never going to be a realistic option.

The ICAC inquiry certainly makes for fascinat-ing viewing and reading from a journalistic point of view.

Unfortunately it puts our city under the spot-light for all the wrong reasons when there are so many positive things going on outside of these incidents.

How about those Knights?Their form is up and down like a yo-yo but

recent victories over the Roosters and the Storm shows there is plenty of hope for the future.

Kurt Gidley said the best part of the last-minute victory against Melbourne was the team embrac-ing each other as the sideline conversion sailed through the posts.

Even non-Knights fans must have been happy to see the sheer joy and excitement on the play-ers’ faces after an unbelievably difficult season.

Young stars like the Mata’utia brothers and Jake Mamo are starting to filter through to the NRL and certainly haven’t been overawed.

It really does make you wonder what might have been this season if even just one of the many dramas and distractions had not occurred this year. The NYC team is four points clear at the top of the ladder. Traditionally the Knights haven’t been all that strong in the under 20s competition but this year’s crop of players have been standouts all year.

History shows that not all of them will make the jump to the NRL but if three or four of the best can progress next year, a return to the finals is on the cards. The departure of several players, including Darius Boyd, frees up room to add depth to an already solid roster.

The appointment of Rick Stone as coach for at least the next two years is a great move.

Full credit to him for staying on at the Knights after being replaced in the head coaching role after the arrival of Wayne Bennett and being such a positive influence around the club.

It will take one hell of a campaign from the Liberals

A Council investigation has found little can be done to alleviate parking congestion in Central Maitland’s Bull Street, despite

residents tabling a petition to have the situation improved.

The Post reported in March about the difficulties faced by residents trying to park in the street, due to the inadequate parking facilities provided to neighbour-ing offices, a gym and a call centre, causing the overflow to spill into the residential street.

Residents spoke of blocked driveways, narrowed thoroughfares and abuse and littering from the motorists.

“They’re calling residents bitches and sticking their fingers up at them,” local John Winter said.

“These are people’s homes - they deserve the right to peace and quiet and to have a park.”

Council’s Manager Infrastructure Plan-ning and Development Engineering, Stephen Hawes, said in a letter addressed to Councillor Henry Meskauskas, that following the residents’ pleas, Council officers investigated the situation and were able to make small adjustments.

“Council Officers inspected the No Park-ing signage in Bull St [sic] and it was identi-fied that one of the signs is not angled in the correct direction,” Mr Hawes said.

“This will be corrected.”Mr Hawes also said that Council Rangers

will patrol the street and works residents requested on the streets curbs and gutter-ing will be assessed and prioritised,

however Council would not change the parking restrictions in the street.

“The removal of on-street parking is undesirable in an already high demand parking area,” he said.

“No Parking both sides the length of Bull Street would also not permit residents the opportunity for on road parking.”

Mr Hawes also said that the road does not

meet Roads and Maritime Services’ guide-lines for a residential parking scheme.

Cr Meskauskas said he was disappointed with the result.

“It’s very mediocre as far as I’m concerned,” he said.

“It was the easy option out, and it didn’t resolve all the concerns that the residents’ have.”

Council commits to minor improvements but no increase in parking restrictions

P rominent Hunter property devel-oper, Hilton Grugeon will give his side of the story concerning alleged illegal donations to the

Liberal Party when he fronts the Inde-pendent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) in Sydney today (Wednesday).

As part of the watchdog’s inquiry into prohibited political donations the Commission last week heard evidence that Luke Grant, a former 2HD radio personality and campaign staffer during Newcastle MP, Tim Owen’s successful 2011 election bid, was paid through sham invoices issued to Mr Grugeon’s company Hunter Land and a company associated with Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCloy, called McCloy Administration.

Appearing before the inquiry last Thurs-day, Mr Grant, who worked as Mr Owen’s media advisor in the three months leading up to the March 2011 election, said that from late-February, he knew his $20,000

wage would be paid by the developers, with Mr Grugeon and Mr McCloy each contributing $10,000. The Commission heard that Mr Grant was asked by his boss, campaign manager, Hugh Thomson, to make up draft invoices, each totalling around $10,000, for the companies, charging them for marketing consultancy services that were never performed.

Relaying a statement given to the inquiry by Mr Grugeon, junior counsel assist-ing the ICAC, Greg O’Mahoney said the developer saw the payment as a means of helping Mr Grant through a difficult time.

“We’ve been informed by Mr Grugeon that he reached out to you as a broadcaster who’d fallen on tough times,” he said.

“He explained the payment that was made to you in the course of the campaign on the basis that you’re someone he had looked out for and wanted to lend a help-ing hand to in a time of need.”

Mr Grant said he could not accept Mr Grugeon’s story as factual.

The ICAC also heard evidence from Charlestown MP, Andrew Cornwell, his wife, Samantha Brookes, and Dr Corn-

Andrew Cornwell has admitted to accepting funds from a prohibited donor and will not re-contest his seat at next year’s state election.

well’s father, Brien Cornwell regarding the purchase of a Rex Newell painting by Mr Grugeon. According to Dr Cornwell, the painting had been an unwanted gift from his father to Ms Brookes, which was subsequently re-gifted by Dr Cornwell to Mr Grugeon in the lead up to Christmas in 2010. Mr Grugeon allegedly paid Ms Brookes, $10,120 for the “very generous Christmas gift.”

Dr Cornwell said he felt “uneasy” about the transaction. “You must have smelt a rat immediately,” counsel assisting the ICAC, Geoffrey Watson SC asked Dr Cornwell. “I did,” Mr Cornwell replied. “It was definitely an effort to try and curry favour.”

After seeking legal advice from his parents, who had both trained as solici-tors, Dr Cornwell instructed his wife to cash the cheque from Mr Grugeon and the funds were eventually transferred into Dr Cornwell’s account. However, Dr Cornwell denied using the funds from the sale of the artwork in his campaign, but instead claimed the $10,000 went towards a PAYG tax debt. While giving evidence,

his say Property developer to answer ICAC questions over alleged illegal donations to Liberal Party

Dr Cornwell admitted accepting a prohib-ited donation from Mr McCloy during the campaign and stood down from the parliamentary Liberal Party, along with his colleague Mr Owen, last Thursday.

Dr Cornwell had initially expressed an intention to seek re-election as the Member of Charlestown at next year’s state election but on Friday, announced that he would not re-contest his seat.

Mr Grugeon is scheduled to appear before the inquiry today.

Mr McCloy is due to appear on Thursday before prominent Newcastle architect, Keith Stronach, Saddingtons Building Supplies managing director, Bill Sadding-ton, Daracon founder, David Mingay and ex Newcastle Knights chairman, Michael Tyler give evidence. Friday will feature Maitland MP, Robyn Parker, hotelier, Rolly de With, Churchills Carpet Court owner, Paul Murphy, solicitor and Newcastle Knights Members Club chairman, Nick Dan and Eclipse Media and Events manag-ing director, Tracy McKelligott.

The ICAC has not uncovered any wrong-doing by Ms Parker.

A few months ago an email was sent around Maitland City Council staff asking who liked “drinking, dancing and getting wet”.

Council’s Recreation Development Officer, Alex Threadgate, put his hand up, but didn’t know exactly what he was getting into.

“The email was quite misleading,” he said.

“I thought, ‘Who doesn’t like doing that?’”That is how he, another staff member and

four ring-ins found themselves perform-ing a synchronised swimming routine in Maitland pool on a 17-degree day, wearing women’s nude underwear, a pink swimsuit and a flowery swimming cap.

The motley group of six, whose occupa-tions range from mining to IT, are now the unlikely stars of the 2014 Bitter and Twisted International Boutique Beer Festival campaign, revealing their “twisted side” in

a print and television advertisement. The campaign will promote the popular festival, to be held at Maitland Gaol in November.

Mr Threadgate said that the sheerness of the swimming costumes required the nude underwear to be worn underneath, but it didn’t phase him.

“It’s near impossible to embarrass me,” he said. “I’ve done worse things.

“I’ll have to get an agent now and start sorting out my affairs - who knows, tomor-row I could be in Hollywood.”

C hildren’s author Morris Gleitz-man had to front 750 Maitland school students last week, but he was far from a misery guts. The

writer of iconic children’s novels such as Two Weeks with the Queen, Worry Warts and Boy Overboard was in town last week as part of Maitland City Library’s Book Week celebrations and spoke to students from 13 schools about his work and theirs.

“I talk about my books and ways to help them with their writing,” Mr Gleitzman said.

He said that the question and answer portion of the session kept him on his toes, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“The questions are the best part of the visit,” he said.

“Children can be quite unpredictable.“I’m very lucky - to make your life

A range of martial arts styles will be on display this weekend as the Hunter Valley Martial Arts Spectacular takes over

Maitland Town Hall.Held in aid of Hunter Valley Men’s

Crisis Support, the evening will host demonstrations of karate, jujutsu, tae kwon do, tai chi, defendo and kickbox-ing in order to raise funds for the charity which provides short-term shelter for men in need.

Organiser Philip Penfold said that the

night will be a good sampler of the differ-ent styles. “It is a great opportunity for the public who have an interest in start-ing martial arts for themselves or their children,” he said.

“They get to see a variety of styles on offer and choose a style that best suits them.”

Entry to the event is free, but Crisis Support is hoping to raise $1000 through coin donations, canteen proceeds, raffles and prize auctions.

The Hunter Valley Martial Arts Spec-tacular will be held on Saturday, August 16 in the Maitland Town Hall, starting at 6:30pm.

Trivia fundraiserFor Lauren Koppers, time comes with a five-figure price tag.

The mother of young twin boys has been fighting various cancers since she was 13 years old, but two years ago, at age 25, was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

Ms Koppers was told that she could not be cured, but she could buy some time in the form of a drug that could slow the growth of the cancer.

However, it has not been accepted into the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, meaning that three months of treatment would cost Ms Koppers $14,000.

“There are many hoops that need to be jumped through in order to qualify for some medications, especially cancer drugs,” Ms Koppers said.

“Even if the drug is available, it doesn’t necessarily mean that patients can access it for a large number of reasons, but I am incredibly lucky in that the type of breast cancer I have means that I can access this drug.”

If the medication is successful, Ms Koppers could live beyond the average expectancy of four to six years from diagnosis.

“Every day counts and I am willing to do whatever it takes to have more time with my family,” she said.

Ms Kopper’s friends and family are undertaking fundraising efforts to contribute to the cost of the medication by holding a trivia night at Marcellin Park on August 30. For more informa-tion on how to help contact Michelle on 0419 833 643.

LOCAL GOVERNMENT

G reens councillor, James Ryan has lodged a rescission motion with Cessnock City Council general manager, Stephen Glen,

seeking to overturn construction of a foot-path linking the Nulkaba and Cessnock townships.

Cessnock councillors last week voted 7-6 to alter the 2014/2015 Pathways Construc-tion Program by deferring planned works on Mount View Road, Cessnock in favour of a 350m footpath on Wine Country Drive from the Calvary Nursing Home entrance to Kerlew Street, Nulkaba. The Pathways Construction Program has an allocation of $150,000 to undertake seven footpath projects.

The work on Mount View Road took in a section fronting the current PCYC prem-ises which will soon be redeveloped. A Council report found it was likely that the redevelopment work would disrupt the new footpath if it were to proceed in that location.

The Nulkaba works were not listed as part of the program but had been mentioned as a priority by now-Mayor Bob Pynsent (Labor) during campaigning for the 2012 local government election.

Rescission motion lodged following decision to alter Pathways Construction Program

Drama over Nulkaba footpath

A section of the location for the proposed footpath to be constructed in Nulkaba

Cr Ryan submitted the rescission motion at the conclusion of last week’s council meeting, with fellow councillors Bryce Gibson (Liberal) and Ian Olsen (Independ-

ent) adding their support to give the three signatures needed for the motion to proceed.

The rescission motion will be heard at

PAUL MONFORTE the next Council meeting on Wednesday, August 20.

At last week’s Council meeting, Cr Ryan questioned why the Nulkaba footpath was now a priority given that it had not been deemed important enough to make the original list. He said there were far greater footpath priorities within the local government area that would be delayed.

“Students at Kurri Kurri High School are crying out for a footpath on Deakin Street and we’re not building it,” said.

“Mount View High School needs a foot-path and we aren’t building that either.”

Labor councillor, Morgan Campbell raised a motion in November last year asking Council to prepare a report on the cost of installing a footpath along Wine Country Drive at Nulkaba with a view to the first stage of the project being funded in the 2014/15 budget.

The report found construction of the 350m stage would cost $50,000.

Cr Campbell said he was responding to the needs of residents and tourists in the Nulkaba area. “I’ve done a lot of door-knocking in Nulkaba and this has been by far the most in-demand project,” Cr Campbell said. “It’s very dangerous at the moment - we have some tourists and visi-tors walking on the wrong side of the road trying to find their way into Cessnock.”

I am counting down the days until this weekend’s Maitland Aroma Coffee and Chocolate Festival, which is being held in Riverside Car Park (also known as Galton’s Car Park) between 10.00am and 4.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

Now in its sixth year, Aroma brings together some of the region’s best coffee roasters, chocolate connoisseurs and finest Hunter Valley wineries.

There is nothing better than warming up with a hot coffee while indulging in handmade chocolates.

In addition to tasting all the scrumptious treats on offer, I am looking forward to learning different coffee and chocolate-making skills from the Hunter TAFE and a host of local chefs.

Demonstrations will include tempering chocolate, latte art, cooking with chocolate, cake decorating, tiramisu and choco-late cupcake design, amongst many others.

This is a free family event and I encourage you all to join me on the riverfront this weekend to support a wonderful local event.

You can find out more information about the Aroma Festival by visiting maitlandaroma.com.au.

Speaking of local events tickets for this year’s Bitter and Twisted Boutique Beer Festival are on sale now.

While it may seem like a while until the event, which is being held at the historic Maitland Gaol on Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 November, I encourage you to get in early and secure your ticket so you don’t miss out.

For the first time in 2014, Maitland Events have partnered with the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation to offer a Pink Ticket option.

$2.50 from every pink ticket sold is going to support those who have been diagnosed or are being treated for breast cancer in the Hunter.

You can purchase your ticket for this year’s Bitter and Twisted Festival by visiting bitterandtwisted.com.au

It was great that Council won an award for “Council with the Most Innovative Youth Week Program in 2014”, which was announced at an event celebrating Local Government Week at NSW Parliament House.

The partnerships with Back on Track, CatholicCare Social Services Youth and Family Support Program, Cessnock High School, Cessnock Community and Youth Development Project, Cessnock Youth Entertainment Committee, Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets, Joblink Plus, Kurri Kurri High School, Kurri Kurri Youth Centre, Mount View High School, the Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Network Hunter, the Samaritans Tenancy Participation Resource Centre, Samaritans Reconnect, St Philip’s Christian College and the YMCA (Kurri Kurri Aquatic Centre), truly indicates a thorough commitment right across the community.

Congratulations to all involved, the big winners are the young people of our Local Government Area.

Local Government Week was celebrated by the Council in sponsoring a breakfast for school leader. Over 150 students, teacher and parents were captivated by the motivational speaker “Sam Cawthorne”. He told the story of how he over-came obstacles in his life to become successful. It is worth Google him to experience his story.

LORI HOPLEYOwner/Director of Feast For Health Dietitians

A person with diabetes should aim to get their blood sugar level (BSL) as close to ‘normal’ as possible. The ‘normal’ BSL range is between 4-8 mmol/L. It is basically impossible to do that without knowing which things increase your BSL, and which things decrease your BSL.

Things that increase your BSL include:• Certain foods (carbohydrates)• Stress (physical and emotional). Physical stress is an injury

(e.g. a broken bone) or illness (e.g. the flu or an infection).Things that decrease your BSL include:• Insulin (the insulin that your body produces*)• Exercise• Diabetes Medications (diabetes tablets and insulin injec-

tions)*If you have type 1 diabetes, your pancreas is no longer

producing insulin. If you have type 2 diabetes, usually your pancreas is still producing insulin but either not enough, or it is not working effectively.

By knowing which things increase or decrease your BSL, you can identify why your BSL may be high or low, and then use the same information to get it back into the normal range.

For example, if your BSL is ‘high’ - it is either because you have had too much carbohydrate and/or stress in proportion to the amount of insulin your body is producing (or how well it is working) and/or how much exercise you have done, and/or how much diabetes medication you have taken.

To bring your BSL down, you can either:1. Increase your exercise, or 2. Increase your diabetes medication (under your doctor’s

supervision), or 3. Reduce your carbohydrate intake, or 4. Try to reduce your stress levels, or5. A combination of one or more of the above strategies. For help and support in achieving better BSLs, come and see

one of our friendly Dietitians at Feast for Health. We would love to help you!

Last week was Healthy Bones Action Week, an initiative to raise awareness of the issues of bone health and osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common bone diseases affect-ing Australians. In fact, it is estimated that about 1.2 million Australians (men and women) suffer from osteoporosis.

The condition occurs when bones begin to lose minerals, such as calcium, resulting in a loss of bone density and making those bones more fragile and prone to fracture from even minor bumps or falls. The bones most often affected are the spine, wrist and hip. Osteoporosis affects both men and women, although the condition is more often seen in women because the hormonal changes associated with menopause tends to trigger a more rapid loss of bone density.

Those who are very thin or very obese and those who do not exercise much are at greater risk of developing osteoporosis.

Certain medical conditions such as Coeliac Disease and Thyroid Disease and medications like prednisone and treatments for breast and prostate cancer also carry a greater risk of developing the condition. And of course calcium is needed for bone health - any diet low in calcium contributes to osteoporosis risk. So, how can osteoporosis be prevented? Regular exercise can help, but it has to be the right type of exercise. Any activity that puts a little bit of strain on your bones is good - walking, dancing and tennis are some examples.

A diet with adequate amounts of calcium is very important and Vitamin D is needed to help absorb that calcium.

We get Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight, but the amount varies depending on where you live, patterns of sunlight expo-sure and your skin type.

Your doctor can arrange a simple blood test to check your levels of Vitamin D. A bone density scan is all that is required to diag-nose osteoporosis.

Once a diagnosis is made there are some very effective treat-ments available to help limit further bone loss.

Your GP will be able to assess your risk factors for osteoporosis and help you decide if you need referring for a bone density scan.

Everything old is new again

N ewcastle Mattress Recyclers are dedicated to reducing waste by keeping mattresses and bases out of landfill sites, which are filling up fast.

In keeping with current legislation, Newcastle Mattress Recyclers deals with old mattresses by cleaning and donating those in the best condition to people in need.

The remainder of mattresses are dismantled with over 97% of the materials recycled. Councils charge $25 or more per mattress or base disposed off at their waste disposal depots and as a result a large number of mattresses are being dumped illegally. Newcastle Mattress Recyclers understands the frustrations of the high charge to dispose of old mattresses which is likely to result in mattresses being disposed of illegally on a continuous basis, that is why Newcastle Mattress Recyclers commenced its service.

They aim to give a much cheaper alternative to disposing of mattresses whilst doing their part to help the environment. Charges are not based on mattress or base size. Instead, the cost is per mattress and base, currently $20 (each) for busi-ness customers and $25 (each) for residential customers

Newcastle Mattress Recyclers has a variety of ex-shop (floor stock), second hand and refurbished bed mattresses and bases for sale starting from as low as $20. Sizes include: single, king single, double, queen and king. Newcastle Mattress Recyclers also recycle lounges. The components of lounges are distributed in the same way as those of mattresses and bases. The metal goes to scrap yards, foam and plastics are dropped off at local recycling centres and the timber is mulched.

To arrange a collection, call (02) 4017 0446. sponsored content

THE NEWCASTLE JETS HAVE SIGNED midfielder Billy Celeski for the 2014/15 A-League season.

Celeski joins the Jets after last playing for Liaoning Whowin in the Chinese Super League.

An Australian Institute of Sport graduate, Celeski started his professional career with Perth Glory, where he played 32 matches and scored four goals.

Celeski spent five seasons at Melbourne Victory between 2008 and 2013, making 91 Hyundai A-League appearances and scoring two goals.

He played the 2013/14 season with Al Shaab CSC in the United Arab Emirates, before making the move to China.

Celeski has represented Australia at U-20 and U-23 level and earned a senior Socceroos cap in 2009 in an AFC Asian Cup qualifying match against Indonesia.

The 29-year-old was also selected in the Foxtel A-League All Stars squad for their friendly match against Manchester United in 2013.

“I spoke to Phil before making the deci-sion and I’m really excited about what’s happening in Newcastle and what he wants to do with the players at the Club, so I just wanted to be a part of it basi-cally,” Celeski said.

“I’m confident it can be a successful season for us at Newcastle with some of the other signings we’ve made and I’m really looking forward to joining the boys at training and getting started.”

Jets head coach Phil Stubbins said the Club was delighted to have secured the services of Celeski for the upcoming Hyundai A-League season.

“I think Billy is a great acquisition for the Club and he’s someone who is very versatile in what he brings to the table,” Stubbins said.

“He gives us added strength in midfield and with his football intelligence he can also play in a number of different posi-tions.

“Billy brings a quality to us that will be very valuable throughout the season and we’re excited to have a player with his experience on board.”

Meanwhile, the Jets were eliminated from the FFA Cup knockout tournament last week after a 2-0 loss to Perth Glory at Magic Park. Joel Griffiths and Jeronimo looked sharp for the Jets and had several chances to score.

Newcastle’s opening match of the A-League season will be against the Mariners at Central Coast Stadium on October 11.

R ecruitment and planning for 2015 will begin in earnest for the Knights after the appointment of Rick Stone as head coach of the Knights for the

next two years.Stone returns to the role after taking over the

Knights’ NRL team towards the end of 2009 after the departure of Brian Smith and continu-ing on through 2010 and 2011 before the arrival of Wayne Bennett.

“Rick has a thorough knowledge of our club and the community, which are qualities we felt important in the head coach position,” CEO Matt Gidley said.

“We look forward to Rick continuing to focus his energies on our current NRL team, and also our NSW Cup team as they move towards the finals later in the year.”

Stone said he had learnt a great deal over the past three years and felt he would be in a good position to take the Knights forward.

“It’s great to get another chance to coach the Knights because it’s not often you get a second opportunity to coach at the same Club,” Stone said.

Knights coaching set in Stone

Current NSW Cup coach, Rick Stone will take the reins of the NRL side next season

Patience and commitment to club rewarded with another chance at the top job

“We have some exciting times ahead with some great young juniors coming through this year and some more talent not too far away from playing NRL.”

Meanwhile, Knights captain Kurt Gidley praised his teammates for refusing to concede

defeat in the latter stages of Saturday’s match against Melbourne.

Down 30-20 with three minutes to go, very few Knights fans would have expected to be jumping out of their seats shortly after.

But as captain Kurt Gidley said after the last-

PAUL MONFORTEgasp 32-30 win “if you don’t believe, you have no chance”.

Gidley was swamped by teammates after kicking a conversion after the siren and thanked the fans for sticking with the team throughout a difficult season.

“They’ve been through the highs and lows with us, so I think everyone walks away pretty happy and proud of their team,” Gidley said.

Coach Wayne Bennett said he wasn’t sure where the match was going to end up after the Knights were down 12-0 after only 10 minutes.

“But they sorted things out on the field amongst themselves and got themselves back in the contest,” Bennett said.

The Knights’ lower grade sides set the scene for the NRL heroics with convincing victories earlier in the afternoon.

The NYC team shut out the Storm 38-0 and are now four points clear at the top of the ladder.

Newcastle’s NSW Cup team dominated Cronulla with a 56-12 thrashing.

The Knights are at home again this weekend when they take on the New Zealand Warriors on Sunday at 2pm at Hunter Stadium.

The NYC match will get underway at 11.45am.The NSW Cup side will play the Warriors at St

John Oval at 2pm on Saturday.
