PRESIDENT’S REPORT

FANTASTIC TuRN uP at our November meeting which made for a great night. It was great to have Joy Healey as a special guest and hear some of her memories of her early days becoming one of the Healey family. Joy of course married Donald’s youngest son John and from her story it appears that things were fairly strict in those days and she was not initially accepted as a potential wife for John. Maybe that was because John had not followed his two broth-ers into the automotive business and had tried his hand firstly in the hotel business before eventually setting up a supermar-ket in Cornwall after he had seen the success of such a busi-ness in America. Joy recalls Donald as a very kind man who actually lived some time with them later in his life. John and Joy had a Healey as their wedding car which was a prototype of the Austin Healey as we know it. As most of us know when the Healey was displayed at the London Motor Show Sir Leonard Lord approached Donald with the proposi-tion that the Austin Motor Corporation take over the production of the Healey and so it became the Austin Healey. There was such a tremendous response to the Austin Healey 100 that initially all the production was exported to the united States and it was virtually impossible to get your hands on one in the uK. It was some months before things settled down and some right hand drive models became available and it was

then that some were sent to Australia. It is certainly a busy time of the year now with something on nearly every weekend. There are a number of reports in this magazine on recent events some of which have taken place even since the November general meeting. We value your sup-port at these events so please make the effort to join us when you can with your Austin Healey.December is our Annual General Meeting and we are still looking for members to step up and fill some positions on our committee. I know I have been harping on this for a while now but we have a great club and if we want to keep it that way we need some people to new members on the committee. It is not my intention to continue as president next year as I want to give Brian Aitken a rest as secretary and take over that position. Brian has done an incredible job for a number of years and we are indebted to him for his service. I know he will not be lost to the club by any means but he does deserve a break and I feel I could better serve the club by taking over his role. So we need a president and a vice president, which we did not have this year, so please give it some thought and see if you can find the time to put something back into the club by taking on a committee position.

See you at the AGM and the Christmas lunch, Cheers, Terry

AUSTIN-HEALEYS THAT RACED IN AUSTRALIA

THERE ARE SOME Austin-Healeys used in competition which are better known because of their owner’s achievements, rather than the performance of the car itself. One such car is silver blue BN1 159275 which was first registered as GFD 550 on 29 September 1954.For whatever reason, this car remained in the name of Austin Distributors until December 1955 when it was sold to James Noall from Elwood who had it re-registered JN 222.The car then passed through the hands of a number of owners until it was pur-chased by Richard Bendall in October 1963. Richard is well known for a number of things over the years, but in particular his enthusiastic participation in Historic Racing in the Jag-Ford and the Dalro Jaguar. In more recent times he developed the Motec Engine Management System, and then immersed himself in the develop-ment and construction of Daytona Sports Cars. Those members who attended the October Southern Run will have an appreciation of the quality of the work

Richard is doing with these cars, and saw the brutal example which has since won the 2015 CAMS State Cham-pionship for Production Sportscars.Richard raced the Austin-Healey once at Calder, before he did a deal in 1963 with Tim Schenken when the Austin-Healey was exchanged for the Austin A30 Tim had been racing. Richard continued to race the A30 and would drive it to meetings, change the diff centre and go racing. Meanwhile, Tim who kept the Austin-Healey for nine months, started racing a Lotus 18 during that period and the White 500 in which he won the 1965 Hillclimb Championship. In 1965 he headed to England where he progressed through Formula Ford, F3, F2 and eventually to F1 in 1970. These days he is a CAMS director, AGP Clerk of Course and V8 Supercars Race director. He thinks he may have run the Austin-Healey in a club event, but it was essentially used as a road car.Again, the car passed through the hands of a number of owners until it was bought by one of our Life Members, John Gray, in November 1965 and he

re-registered the car JMG 104. John started his love of sports cars at the age of 16 with the purchase of a MG PA. However, another deal was done and he found himself the owner of an MG TA. A friend owned the subject Austin-Hea-ley and John became the new owner in time for his 18th birthday. His enjoyment was short lived when, following an incident in Beach Road on the second night of ownership, a magistrate thought his use of public transport for three months could be of benefit. The actual benefit was that it gave John the time to repaint the car BRG and bore out the engine so that he could go faster. John had a number of Austin-Healey owning friends who were all members of the Phillip Island Auto Racing Club –some 15 months before the AHOC was founded. He continued to receive good advice from a number of magistrates, which meant he only kept the Austin-Healey for 12 months. He then bought a GT Falcon, but not before having a run in the Austin-Healey

at a club meeting at Calder. He then raced a Bolwell Mk4 at places like Phillip Island with sponsorship from Brian Wilson the sports car wrecker. Brian must have thought he was on to a good business opportunity.True to form, the car passed through a number of owners to then be bought by well-known Melbourne jazz drum-

mer and vocalist, Ian Smith, in the early 1970s. The car was un-registered and had been sitting for five years, but was now silver blue again. Ian re-registered it, drove it for a while then planned to pull it apart for a rebuild. Registration lapsed in 1974.

When Don Todd bought the car in 1981 it was still in one piece, but he found it had a collapsed piston and a broken crankshaft. Initially Don pulled the car apart for a rebuild, had the chassis repaired and painted. He assembled it to the rolling stage, but it has been sitting in a shed on his farm north of Melbourne ever since.

I WAS READY to depart at the due time of 7.30am but Art wasn’t. Will have to remember that one! We were on our way at 10 minutes to 8.00, expecting peak hour traffic but it was clean sailing right down Glenhuntly Road, something of a miracle at the best of times, around through Port Melbourne and onto the Westgate, only then did we experience heavy traffic and that was short lived once we were on the Geelong Freeway. The result being that we arrived at the BP Service Station, Little River at 9 am (ETA 10.00) where we were to meet up with Barry (an entertaining story-teller) and Glenda Newell giving me plenty of time to have my coffee fix and complete the crosswords. While the trip to Hamilton was relatively uneventful apart from the cold (we of course were travelling topless), Art mar-velled at how well his Healey travelled after Bruce Dixon and Bill Melcalf had waved their magic wands days earlier. Hope that gleaming engine wasn’t the cause of Bill’s hospital visit the next day!At Hamilton Motel where we stayed overnight, we met up with the Provans, Vaughans, Terry Wade and Clarks. Elaine, Greig and I visited the Hamilton Gallery and enjoyed a display of antique cups, mainly English but also some German and Scandinavian, a wonderful display of exquisitely embroi-dered vintage kimonos. Whilst there was some modern art, Elaine and I particularly enjoyed the gouache works by Paul Sansby. Art opted to visit the Tyrepower store.Enjoyed a delicious meal at the Botanical Motel which over-looked the Botanic Garden that some of the gang chose to visit.

After a good night’s sleep we were joined by David and Rae Kelly, Cliff and Kaye Allen, and after numerous photo shoots of the Healey cars by the motel owners and passersby we left around 10.00am to enjoy the hospitality of Mary and Derek Dyer, relatives of the Provans at Digby. Derek is a keen aviator and builds his own ultra lights, a project that takes him up to four years to complete a plane – amazing patience and ability. The men were in awe but I don’t think any of them are prepared to swap their Healey for a light

plane. Art in fact had travelled with Derek’s late father, an-other keen pilot, in a light plane some 50 years before. The ladies were entertained with a tour of Mary’s superb garden and the homestead built in the 1920s, with stone from the property.

The only spanner in the works that I can recall was our planned stop in Mount Gambier for lunch was thwarted when we discovered that the Mt Gambier Annual Show was on, so we overcame that with a pit stop and a snack on the outskirts. At least we were all able to park the cars without difficulty. After Millicent we stopped at the Woakwine Cutting, a truly remarkable feat in 1957 when Murray McCourt, land owner, decided to have a go at constructing a channel to drain his swampy land. Quite a challenge with risks of the walls caving in, but three years later it had been achieved, the result meant he had virtually double the acreage of arable farm land.

Our timing was perfect, arriving at our destination at 4.00pm for a welcome drink of Karatta sparkling wine - and boy was it welcomed - at the elegant Grey Masts B & B where we met up with the South Australian contingent including hosts Bob and Robyn upton, with everyone’s Healey making it to Robe without incident. We were pleased too that Brian and Barb Meredith had ar-rived, driving straight through in a day. Afterwards a delicious dinner at the Adventurous Spoon, a magnificent bluestone restaurant that would hold its own any-where in the world. I just hope those two smiling girls make it in the business world. Saturday it was Beachport for lunch where we were joined by Steve Pike at the Bompas Hotel and then Robe Hotel for yet another large dinner. Both Robe and Beachport are seeped in history and well worth the visit. We walked the 772m jetty, the second longest

in South Australia and took the scenic drive at Beachport, a spectacular Healey run. Robe, one of SA first towns was settled in 1802 as a major shipping destination and boasts many historic buildings, the Chinese walked from Robe to Ballarat in search of gold disem-barking in Robe in order to save landing tax imposed on pas-sengers in Victoria. It also saw many ship wrecks (30 in 1853) which did not abate after the building of the all white Obelisk, that occurred after it was painted red and white stripes, the white did not stand out.Sunday saw us at Karatta Wines for wine tasting and lunch and a tour of the vineyard and winemaking facilities before going back to Robe for a street parade down the main street and display of our cars on the foreshore lawns. The parade was escorted by the local fire brigade. On Monday morning we all departed in various directions after a truly great weekend of fun driving and fellowship.

A LARGE CROWD of around 300 attended Steve Pikes’ clearance sale on 1 November and some club members secured some bargains. Steve is downsizing to smaller premises and nearer to home as a bonus. So 30 years of accumulated Healey parts and equipment had to go. Among members there were Jim Reddy, Peter Parsons, Greg Kilmartin, Iain McPherson, Paul McPherson, Tony Bar-rett, Bruce Dixon and Tony Bennetto.

Nisbet Marshall bought plenty and with his son had to make more than one trip back to Creswick with his purchases-Tony Bennetto made a serious attempt to get a BN2 chassis. Mark Bird didn’t notice a framed photo of his race car that was up for auction. Paul McPherson purchased a rare photo of Carrol Shelby in a 100S at the 1954 Pan American Road Race signed by the driver. Paul has loaned it to the club for display in our rooms. Other Healey

owners present were past members Roger Gilmore and Mac Fawcett.Steve will continue to do mainly 100/S work for which he is world renowned and will be buying and selling cars from his new showroom. Steve was the instigator of us having Joy Healey at our recent General Meeting as she was staying with him for a few days on her recent visit to Australia to see her son who lives in Sydney.

The Social CalendarOCTOBER WAS A busy month with a splendid weekend to Marysville, well organised by Barry and Jan Barnes with a full report and photos by Jo Saunders in the November mag. There was also the Southern Run to Daytona Sports Cars, Dromana, including a run around the Peninsula. Eight Healeys in attendance, but by the time we got to the lookout at Arthur’s Seat we only had four, but eventually joined by three more for a group photo. The other wasn’t lost but must have been getting hungry as he went straight to lunch, following which we met Richard Bendall, a truly amazing guy, who has attained highest accolades for engineering excellence in motorsport. And then there was Robe, our combined weekend with the SA Club organised admirably by Bob upton. Nineteen Victorians attended (eight Healeys) and most left on the Thursday and stayed overnight in Hamilton. A full report was provided by Jill and is in this month’s magazine.Gordon Lindner’s monthly Peninsula Lunch was well patronised with 32 people and held at the Cardinia Hotel, Beaconfield.

The annual Cup Day at the Edwards’ proved a winner, in a beautiful setting, with perfect weather and great hosts in Peter and Lyn. Also an excellent Melbourne Cup outcome with a couple of the attendees connected to owners of the winning horse, and we witnessed history with the first female jockey winning the event.

Tri club driveTWENTY FIVE CLuB members joined with members of the Jaguar Car Club and the Austin Healey Sprite Drivers’ Club on a very pleasant and sunny Sunday on a drive from the clu-brooms through the Dandenongs and Kinglake to the beautiful Flowerdale Estate. On the way we stopped off at the Chocolaterie near Yarra Glen for a caffeine and chocolate fix which is always a pleasant place for a break. Ninety people eventually made it to Flowerdale for a sumptuous High Tea in a Marquee complete with chandeliers used the night before for a wedding. We were well looked after by our hosts and even given the choice of “doggy bags” to take the delicious spoils home. Great to see Howard and Sandy James over from Mansfield, and old members John and Janet Stearne in their 100/4 which John restored 40 years ago. Good to see Barry and Jan Barnes using that immaculate BJ8, and Cliff and Kay Allen joining us again from Sunbury. Thanks to the others that came along also as we were well outnumbered by the other clubs. All in all a great day held in perfect conditions.

EIGHT HEALEYS AND 14 members met at the new BP Roadhouse on Peninsula Link for a leisurely drive through Flinders and the Red Hill area coming back to Arthur’s Seat where we found we had lost a couple of cars. Eventually they turned up except one who went straight to the Dromana restaurant where we enjoyed lunch. After lunch we made our way to the Daytona Sports Car factory in the Dromana Industrial Estate. There we were met by Richard Bendall who had started the Daytona business some years ago and has now constructed about eight of the cars. He told us how he came to design the

concept and how he overcame some of the objections he encountered trying to use the “Daytona” name. Richard had developed the “Motec” engine management systems which were revolutionary in concept and are used by many race teams around the world. Richard sold that business now but still has an advisory role with the company; however it has enabled him to pursue his passions and as well as the Daytona cars. He has a number of other projects which we were lucky enough to see. The Daytona Sports cars have been very successful, proving to be more than competitive with the best GT3 sports cars that are available around the world

and they hold lap records at numerous race tracks including Sandown. They weigh less than 900kg and are powered by 6-litre Chevrolet engines that develop more than 600hp, which is more than V8 Supercars. Richard told us about how these cars have been developed and also the true story about how Peter Brock had been killed while competing in one of Richard’s cars in Western Australia. We are grateful to Richard for showing us his factories and telling us of his ex-ploits, and maybe we can go back again in the future as I am sure there will be more projects to see.

MORE THAN 60 club members were present at our visit to the Healey Factory on Wednesday 18 November. After being welcomed by Robbie Rowland and given a brief rundown on the origin of the business and the details of its early days we were split into four groups and taken through the different sections of the factory.First there was the servicing section where customers cars are worked on according to their owners requests; be it upgrades or just normal service requirements. This is also where engine rebuilds are undertaken and we were shown some of the optional parts that can go into our cars usually to improve their performance. The alloy cylinder heads, manifolds and even engine blocks that originated from the late Dave Woodhouse were amazing and the Healey Factory is very lucky to now be able to make them available. Then there is the restoration section which can include more major improvements or complete rebuilds according to the customers’ requests and sometimes in the customers’ time frame. There were some cars in this section that had been there for many months.

We were shown how the parts from disassembled cars were stored to avoid any misplacement and how all the restoration was carried out in consultation with the owners.Downstairs was the panel shop where all the bodywork was completed often requiring panels to be made using specialist equipment and welding techniques. Major restorations require bodywork to be brought back to bare metal and we were shown how complex it was ensuring the right shape was achieved especially with an Austin Healey having so many curved panels.Last was the paint shop where strict regulations require paint-ing to be done in exhaust equipped work spaces each one isolated from the others. It was explained how colour matching was achieved and how much preparation was required before the final colour was put on the car. We certainly learnt a lot on the night and we are indebted to Rob and his staff for showing us what was involved in main-taining our Austin Healeys.

Event Reports

AROCA 10 Hour Relay Winton Raceway17/18 October

I HAVE DELEGATED this report to others and hopefully it will appear elsewhere in the magazine – or perhaps inserted here by our editor.Below are the scores toward our competition and associate championships. You will note that David Kelly drove his Tri-umph TR8 in a Triumph Club Team but joined us for Sunday night celebrations at dinner at the North Eastern Hotel in Benalla, as he has done for many years now. Peter Kaiser drove his modern Mini Cooper S as usual but endured a horror weekend by his usual standards. His team is ALWAYS in the top few but this year they could muster up only three cars which was always going to be difficult for the extension from 6 to 10 hours, and then Peter and one of the other cars battled mechanical woes right from the Saturday afternoon start and did very well just to complete the event. Our six car Team was five before we started and was effectively four with John Southwell’s mechanical problems. At this point I must thank Simon Gardiner for his assistance all weekend in helping John in particular and the rest of us in general as our unpaid but much appreciated mechanic. It was hot, many laps were completed and the old Healeys/Sprites are pretty tiring to drive for extended sessions. The 10 Hours was quite a bit harder than I expected and it was one very tired but satisfied team at the end. Eleventh place was a fine effort. Why isn’t 11 pronounced onety one? Some days you’re the top dog, some days you’re the lamp post. Anyway, our cars looked and sounded fantastic and represent-ed our club magnificently. And it was great to share a garage with the “All Sprite Team” of six AHSDC cars. The drivers really appreciated the efforts of managers Froelich, McPherson and Jackson (should have been driving and really kept us on or toes), senior time keeper Graham Palich and his assistants (especially Terry Goode who had the misfortune to be a mate of John Southwell), and Lorraine and Adrian Newman who kept us fed and hydrated. This allowed the drivers to relax a bit between runs and give us a chance to achieve a good result. We also had support from Brian O’Meara on Saturday from Kyabram, Gary Fitridge on both days from Myrtleford, and on Sunday from Jeff Gillard despite a quick trip to Melbourne because his father had taken ill. We missed the company of our regular crew of Trevor Smith and John Goodall but despite health issues in the Goodall household they drove up to Winton for just a couple of hours on Sunday to show support! Rob and Andrew Rowland gave the Cobra a run to Winton and Rob was telling Andrew all about the good old days when he competed in Healey teams in the 6 Hour in the late 1960s (and 1970s?) while I tried to get Andrew thinking about join-ing us in the future.

And it was wonderful to receive a surprise visit from Anne and Peter Stanley who were managers of our Healey teams for many years until quite recently and without whom our participation would have withered away. I hope I have not missed any one out – it seems like a long time ago now.

Victoria Park SprintAdelaide Motorsport Festival17/18 October

PHILIP AITKEN TOOK the historic Coad Vauxhall Group Lb racer to this event in the centre of Adelaide, running sprints on a section of the original Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix Circuit in the East Parklands. There were FI cars that had been driven by Ayrton Senna, Gerhard Berger and Alan Jones, plus others, historic and mod-ern sports cars, historic touring cars and classic motorcycles competing on both days. As a bonus for spectators, the Classic Adelaide Rally cars used the same venue as a base on the Friday and Saturday. Phil ran in a sprint group that included Tony Jarvis in a Healey 100S, a Porsche RS60 Spyder, a Shelby Cobra, Nigel Tait in the famous Matich SR4, an Elfin Streamliner, MG PA Special from 1934 and other famous Australian specials based on Singer, MG TC and Plymouth. A Lotus 12a Toyota powered Formula 3 and a Formula Libre open wheeler rounded out a very impressive group. Phil recorded times in the top third of this group (yes, com-fortably ahead of the Healey 100S!) but broke the diff at the end of the weekend which meant that Phil and the Coad Vauxhall were non starters at the Sandown Historics two weeks later. Phil’s efforts earned him points for our

ASSOCIATE COMPETITION CHAMPIONSHIP, with four fastest laps shown below -Phillip Aitken (Coad Vauxhall Special) 950 pts 1.01.06, 1.01.23, 1.01.30, 1.01.56 (The 100S was obviously in demon-stration mode, lapping at 1.16 or slower).

MSCA Winton1 November

I MISSED THE last MSCA meeting for 2015 having headed off for a family holiday immediately after the 10 Hour Relay. This cost me dearly as arch rival AHSDC president attended in his rapid Bugeye and won our class for maximum points, leapfrogging me to win the Class 0-166cc Marque Sports Cars in the process. Congratulations Peter. We really enjoyed a great battle all year. Luckily my tears on the computer screen don’t show up! Also missing was Bill Vaughan who decided it was too risky and too much action with Sandown Historics to attend the next weekend. Bill finished 5th in Class after doing only four of nine events on offer.I did not expect any AHOC members to travel to Winton but Shane O’Brien did in Hugh Purse’s 100 even though he too was to compete at Sandown the next week, and I was sorry to miss Ken Sadler up from Warrnambool for his only event in 2015 after a busy year traveling. The weather turned against the boys after lunch so they packed up after three runs even though there was plenty more on offer. In the MSCA Regularity competition, Shane finished 12th and Ken 14th - out of 14. OOPS! Selwyn Hall was Clerk of Course and reported that by 3pm everyone had stopped – most unusual. Selwyn was happy with his new initiative of “hot recovery” where the field is allowed to continue to circulate while a recovery of a stranded car is made, rather than putting out the red flag and bringing the field back in to pit lane. Selwyn and the MSCA race day organ-izers are always trying to come up with new ideas to give the competitors maximum laps for the day.

Historic Sandown “Return of Thunder”7/8 November

NOT HAVING ENTERED and returning home from holidays to a few things to deal with I did not even make it to Sandown as a spectator. I can report briefly from Natsoft results and a couple of telephone calls.Group S Production Sports Car races. Thirty nine cars rolled out for qualifying on Saturday morning, Brian Duffy (3000) in 12th at 1.29.9, just short of his best Sandown time, Peter Kaiser (sprite0 in 31st at 1.35.6 and a welcome return to Group S for Damian Molney in his blue 100/4 right behind (or is that beside?) PK in 32nd place at 1.36.2. As is becoming the norm, the Group S field is becoming domi-nated by new entries from Porsches, V8 Corvettes and Shelbys – either newer or bigger capacity or both than big and small Healeys (and MGBs). The boys soldiered on regardless. Brian Duffy fought hard for 13th and 11th in the first two races and was holding 12th/13th in race 3 when what turned

out, thankfully, to be a fairly minor mechanical problem stopped him with a couple of laps to go in the third and last race. Peter Kaiser improved to 25th by the third race and set a new fastest lap for him in the last race. But Damian Moloney really got the big four cylinder Healey mobile to score 27th and 22nd in races 2 and 3 (a 36th of 37th but his fastest lap of the weekend – and new PB – in Race 1 suggested an “oops” somewhere).Groups J, K and L 1940-1960 Sports and Racing had member Geoff McInnes in his 1948 Riley Special plus Western Australian Healey member Charlie Mitchell in his “TS Special Mono Posto”. I have to admit that I do not know Charlie or his car, as I was embarrassed to discover at our monthly meeting on the Thursday prior to the event where Charlie was a wel-come visitor. I have been told that Charlie’s car has an impres-sive history (Australian GPs?) and it is powered by a GMC motor of 4788cc, apparently the same engine that powers one of David Kelly’s army trucks. Now I have opened myself up to emails I suspect! Charlie was very competitive on his first visit to Sandown with 4th in race 1 and then 2nd in both races 2 and 3 with moments in the lead and only a couple of seconds behind the winning Elva Courier... Meanwhile Geoff McInnes has earned points toward the Associate Championship in the Riley, finishing around 10th to 13th over the weekend, but his times were a bit off his best. Nursing a problem perhaps?Peter Williams had an enjoyable trouble free weekend in his Brabham in Group O Racing, happy to be able to drive his iconic open wheeler again after a leg injury curtailed his activi-ties lately. His car was just one of five Brabhams in the field.Regularity had just one very large field instead of the usual two groups and the heavy traffic and speed differences made nail-ing target lap times quite difficult for Bill Vaughan (Sprite) and Shane O’Brien in Hugh Purse’s 100/4 plus Frank Hook in his 100 (Frank is not a financial member unfortunately). A mechanical issue stopped Shane on lap one in the Saturday afternoon first timed session. As they say Shane, when every-thing is coming your way, you’re probably in the wrong lane. Bill Vaughan reported that the VHRR organizers did well to grid up the cars from fastest to slowest and the event was well run BuT the traffic was difficult. Despite this, Bill managed 5th in session 3 on Sunday afternoon and Frank Hook won the first timed session in the 100.

Our 2015 competition finished after the Sandown Historics on November 7/8th, and to give some element of suspense I am not publishing the championship results until after the trophy presentations at our Christmas luncheon and awards presentation at the clubrooms on Sunday 6 December – probably will have to wait for the February magazine.

Targa High Country7/8 November

BRIAN AND LINDA Dermott achieved another excellent result in their Torana Xu1 in this challenging tarmac rally in North East Victoria. Brian sent me the following email which I copy in to my re-port with our congratulations. unfortunately, our competition championship scoring system is unable to reward the Dermotts!

“I thought you might like to include a brief mention in your competition report of the podium result Lin and I achieved in THC15. We came 3rd in Early Classic behind a Datsun 240Z and Alfa GTV2000 – this is the handicap competition. Also 12th in Classic Outright, 2nd Limited Modified spec car and 1st of 10 historic (pre 73) touring cars. This is the first podium since Tasmania and Adelaide in 2003

in the Healey and the first event trophy with the Torana. The difference was Ron Harrop and fantastic preparation by our Mansfield Motorsport team. Sick of the gutless wonder, we had become friendly with Ron and he offered to bring the expertise of 40 years ago to our inlet manifold and head using modern tech with amazing results. Happily, we were then able to get the extra performance out of the car and beat a number who have always beaten us. Also, 40% of the classic field did not finish all the stages so reliability was a key factor. And at last, we are sometimes as quick as we were in the Healey.Targa Tas coming up in April will be our last.”

CLOSING THOuGHT“If at first you don’t succeed,

destroy all the evidence that you’ve tried.”

Cheers Rod Vogt

Odds & Ends

THE HIGHLY COVETED Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the Best Young Red, one of the most sought after awards on the Australian Wine Calendar, has been won by Austin-Healey Owners Rosemary and Terry Bennett with a Home Hill Kelly’s Reserve Pinot Noir 2014 vintage. In what surely is a coup for Rosemary and Terry, their 2014 Home Hill Kelly’s Pinot Noir not only won the Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the best red wine from 2013 and 2014 vintages, it also won The James Halliday Trophy for the Best Pinot Noir.Rosemary and Terry run Home Hills Wines in Ranelagh with their eldest Son Sean managing the six hectare vineyards and daughter Kelly Kumar in the front office doing the marketing. On the Austin-Healey front Terry is the proud owner of a Red BN1 (is there any other colour?) and went to school with well known Tasmanian Austin- Healey identity, Derek Millhouse. They attended Huonville High School. It was good to see that Terry has not forgotten his old school mates and the day we had a combined run with the Tasmanian Jaguar Car Club to Home Hill Winery back in 2013, Derek and another former school friend Ross Johnson sat up the front with Terry and his BN1.“We are overwhelmed and finding it hard for the win to sink in,” Rose-mary said. “The wine is great for all Tasmanian wine producers” Their Ranelagh winery is only the second Tasmanian operation to take out the award in the 53 year history of the trophy. It is also the second time a Pinot Noir has won the trophy, with the prize usually going to a Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon. With only 400 dozen of the award winning wine being produced demand is high and there is a limit of one bottle per customer at cellar door.

Footnote – Ralph Fletcher took a group of Victorian Owners to Tas-mania in 2013. They shared a run on with the Tasmanian Jaguar Car Club down to Home Hill Winery and Restaurant.

president Welcome everyone to the November general meeting.

A particular welcome to Joy Healey who is visiting us tonight and we will have the opportunity to hear from her shortly.it has been a particularly busy month for a lot of us with our visit to the Daytona factory on Thursday 15th October followed soon after by the trip to Robe to meet up with members of the South Australian club. What a great weekend it was too. Soon after that a number of members attended Steve Pikes’ clearance sale which i gather was quite a success for Steve at least. This month we have the President’s run this Sunday which i must say has not been that well supported so if you would still like to go then we should be able to fit you in. Please see me tonight about that.Next month we have our Annual General Meeting and we are still hoping for some members to come forward and nominate for some positions. Please give it some consideration. Then in December we have our Annual Christmas Party and Presentations so i hope to see many of you at that. Lorraine NewmanTreasurer4.11.2015 Memberships: Simon Gardiner Simon noted that membership re-subscriptions were posted out in October and reported that at present we have 684 members, including 330 Healey owners and 337 family members.

Social: Arthur Tuckett October was a busy month with a splendid weekend to Marysville, well organised by Barry and Jan Barnes with a full report and photos by Jo Saunders in the November mag.

The Southern Run to Daytona Sports Cars, Dromana, including a run around the Peninsula. Eight Healeys in attendance, but by the time we got to the lookout at Arthur’s Seat we only had four, but eventually joined by three more for a group photo. The other wasn’t lost but must have been getting hungry as he went straight to lunch, following which we met Richard Bendall, a truly amazing guy, who has attained highest accolades for engineering excellence in motor sport.

And then there was Robe, our combined weekend with the

26 Hundreds & Thousands - December 2015

SA Club organised admirably by Bob Upton. 19 Victorians attended (8 Healey’s) and most left on the Thursday and stayed overnight in Hamilton. At Digby the following day we enjoyed the hospitality of Mary and Derek Dyer, relatives of the Provan’s. Derek is a keen aviator and builds his own ultralights, a project that takes him up to 4 years to complete a plane – amazing. The ladies were entertained with a tour of Mary’s superb garden and the homestead built in the 1920’s, with stone from the property. Travelled then through Mt Gambier and Millicent on route to Robe, but stopping at Woakwine Cutting, a truly remarkable feat in 1957 when the land owner decided to have a go at constructing a channel to drain his swampy land which meant he had virtually double the acreage of arable farm land.

Everyone’s Healey’s made it without incident to Robe where we were welcomed with a glass of sparkling Karatta wine, dinner then at the Adventurous Spoon, magnificent restaurant that would hold its own anywhere in the world. Saturday it was Beachport for lunch at the Bompas Hotel and then Robe Hotel for yet another large dinner. Both Robe and Beachport are seeped in history and well worth the visit. Sunday saw us at Karatta Wines for wine tasting and lunch and a tour of the vineyard and winemaking facilities before going back to Robe for a street parade down the main street and display of our cars on the foreshore lawns. Monday morning saw us all depart in various directions after a great weekend.

Gordon’s monthly Peninsula Lunch was again well patronised with 32 people and held at the Cardinia Hotel, Beaconfield.

Annual Cup Day at the Edwards’ again proved a winner, beautiful setting, perfect weather and great hosts in Peter and Lyn. Also an excellent cup outcome with a couple of the attendees being connected to the owners of the winner, and us witnessing history with the first female jockey winning the event.

Mick Smith - Social matters: Mick noted that she has received almost all outstanding payments for the Christmas Party and that if anyone else would like to attend, she still has a few places free.

Editor: Mandy reported that because she edits magazines for two clubs, a mix up in articles was almost bound to happen eventually! We now have that behind us - she accidently published a note regarding the Club Permit scheme in the last magazine that was NOT meant for 100s and 1000s but for the Goblin’s Gazette. Alex has sent a clarification to members via e mail.

Competition: Competition Manager Rod has been away on holiday returning only late this afternoon. He noted that Historic Sandown is running this week end with many AHOC of Vic members competing as well as our guest tonight, Charlie Mitchell.Tickets are $70 for Saturday and Sunday or $35 Saturday and $45 Sunday - Friday practice is free entry.

Rod then introduced Brian Froelich to provide a report on the recent Winton 10 Hour Relay, for which Brian served as Team Healey Manager. Brian reported that although a six car team was assembled, various issues reduced that number to four! Unfortunately, Peter Jackson suffered a very low speed jack knife accident on the way to the event (Peter was fine as is the Healey, but the tow vehicle and car trailer were too damaged to get to Winton, John Southwell’s immaculate Sprite suffered mechanical maladies and despite heroic efforts by Simon Gardiner this car was retired. Also in the mechanical wars was Tony Rogers Healey, but a quick change to the Porsche kept Tony in the event! Those running for many hours then were stalwart Geoff Leake, Mandy Parry-Jones, Rod Vogt, and Tony in the porker.

Over all the team performed very satisfactorily, presently holding 11th place out of 40 entries subject to an appeal by another team which if successful, may relegate them to 12th - still very credible. Brian also thanks all the helpers who turned up over the week end and pitched in and in particular, Paul McPherson who labored for the organisers on behalf of Team Healey. Brian also thanks the AHOC of Vic for their financial support for which all entrants and visitors were thankful. Rod rose to offer his thanks to Brian for his immense input as the Team Manager.

Next, Selwyn Hall presented his report of the last MSCA event at Winton. This was the last round for 2015 and because he was away on holiday, Rod Vogt could not attend. This unfortunately allowed his closest rival to just sneak a few more points which may displace Rod from the top prize in his category! Notwithstanding, Selwyn reported that it was a very efficiently run event where everyone completed their stints despite a late change in the weather which resulted in shutting down earlier than usual. Selwyn also noted that these days, regularity is being driven so enthusiastically it looks more like a sprint event! Shane punting Hugh’s Healey is a classic example!

Regalia: Jeff Gillard. Jeff modelled the latest Polo shirts to a lone wolf whistle which proves that person “should have gone to spec savers”! Art wore a very fashionable chambray shirt which was very much admired by our South Australian brethren at the Robe Mini Rally recently. These garments are available on the Regalia stand and will also be available at the Christmas party, where members can satisfy their Grandchildren’s desire to buy them a nice present!

At this point, Terry decided to introduce our very special guest for the evening - Joy Healey (wife of youngest of the Healey brothers, John) - who is in Australia to spend time with her son who lives in NSW. Joy is in Melbourne visiting Steve and Helen Pike and very generously came along this evening and gave the members an entertaining talk about some of her recollections of life in the Healey family. it was wonderful to hear her describe Donald as “Pop” and talk about him so fondly.

General Business: BA advised members that one of the photos recently sold at Steve Pike’s auction and on display in the rooms this evening was purchased by Paul McPherson. This photo realised the highest value of any of the photo memorabilia sold on the day and features a 100S driven by Carroll Shelby in the 1954 Pan American race. The photo is greatly enhanced by Carroll’s autograph and very generously, Paul and Julianne have permanently loaned it to the Club for our enjoyment - thank you very much Paul and Julianne!

Meeting closed at 9.30pm.

Terry then introduced the guest speaker from Trico Products to talk about STABiL fuel stabilizer and 303 surface protection.
