President’s Messageby Allan Gross

Membership Reportby Mary Gross

The Healey touring season got off to a great start in Aprilwith a great tour in Clark County and a stop at a steamengine museum that had everyone talking. The visit atthe museum brought back memories for everyone. I par-ticularly enjoyed seeing the Diamond T trucks as theybrought back vivid memories of my dad and grandfa-ther. The weather cooperated for us and we had beauti-ful vistas on our way to lunch. The views of Mt. St.Helens, Lucia falls and Healey type roads made the tourfun. If you were looking you even saw a camel or two(honest!). Thanks to Missie and Kim Young for arrang-ing the fun outing.

Don’t forget to get your British cars out on the roadsduring the week of May 19-27, 2001. This is” BritishCar Week”, also known as “Drive Your British CarWeek” This is an annual event that began in 1997. Thisweek is to commemorate the wonderful British cars ofthe past, and their owners, who have kept them main-tained for all to see and appreciate. It is time to top offyour dashpots. It’s time to have some fun and share thesites and sounds of our Healey’s.

I wish you the very best of motoring.

Librarian, Doug Auburg, had nothing to report.

ABFM representative, Doug Auburg, reported programswill be printed earlier this year. They will be ready intime for the British Auto Jumble and the Vancouver, B.C.meet in mid- May to allow more promotion.

Rendezvous 2001 committee head, Bill Bolton was notpresent, but Allan reported that plans are proceedingquite well and that we now have a firm contract with theRiverside Inn for 84 rooms to be held until June 30th.The Riverside chef will serve the catered picnic at theJeff Healey Memorial Shelter. Bill wants to call a com-mittee meeting for about one hour before the May meet-ing. Any member of the executive board may attendalso. That will be at 9:00 a.m. at Dennys’ in Salem.Bill has been contacted by the Southern Oregon CartersClub that the superb car track near Medford will be avail-able for auto-cross Friday, August 3rd. It is a paved trackwith lots of curves. Bill wants to know how much inter-est there is within the club for this activity. For thosepresent at the meeting there did not seem to be muchinterest

Under Old Business, Alan handed out the Most ActiveMember Award to Gary Meyers who was not present atthe original awards event. He was thanked for his manyhours of hard work with our club.

Under New Business, Allan brought up the agenda ofthe executive meeting held earlier that day. This in-cluded discussion of the benefits of AHCO affiliatingwith Austin Healey Club USA. Doug Auburg presentedthe proposal. Austin Healey Club USA does not havechapters like Austin Healey Club of America, but it doesoffer a loose affiliation with other clubs. One of theprimary benefits of the affiliation would be one milliondollar liability insurance coverage, that could either re-place ours or be additional and also Officers and Direc-tors coverage which we have discussed having in thepast but had decided was too expensive and was not re

(continued on page 8...)

ally necessary. Some members were still concerned. This coverage would be at no cost to our club and wouldcover all officers, committee people and volunteers whoare also members of the USA club. The requirementsare membership of all officers with the USA club. Anycommittee people or volunteers who wish to have cov-erage must also be members Membership of other mem-bers of our club is voluntary, but for every member ofour club that is also a member of the USA club, AHCOwill receive a five dollar rebate that can be done with asthe club decides. The other requirement is that we ex-change membership lists once a year with the USA clubwhich gives both clubs a chance to solicit new membersin their area who are members of the USA club but notours or vice versa. We would also be asked to help withpromotion by running a small ad in our newsletter forAustin Healey Club, USA and providing USA member-ship materials to our new members. The result of theexecutive meeting on this affiliation proposal was aunanimous yes. This affiliation is renewed on a annualbasis and is of no cost other than the above stated re-quirements. The floor was opened up for discussion. There was concern about the use of the membership listby the USA club. Doug clarified that the club list is usedonly for solicitation for membership. The membershiplist of the USA club is sold to Healey related businesses, which at this time is only Healey Surgeons who sendout a catalog once a year. Members can elect to be re-moved from that list by noting so on their application orrenewal form. It was asked if there was other benefit ofmembership. Doug answered that the USA club providesseed money for the annual Rendezvous, puts out a nicemonthly magazine and also puts out a membership/re-source roster every year which has added a designationof members who would be willing to help out othermembers who might be traveling through their area. Itwas asked how many AHCO members were also mem-bers of the USA club. It was guessed maybe twentypercent. Which would equate to $100-150 rebated to theclub. This would be retroactive for this year if we areaffiliated. The plan is for the club to pay for officers’memberships to insure the affiliation. Rebates could gotoward this cost. Memberships cover both members forcouples as is done by AHCO. It was asked if the affili-ation would have any affect on our treasury. Doug an-swered that it has none nor does it have any affect onour by-laws or constitution unlike Austin Healey Clubof America where chapter clubs by-laws must match.

The plan is not to vote this into our constitution or by-laws, but to vote on it on an annual basis. Jerry Barronmade a motion that AHCO affiliate with Austin HealeyClub USA and that AHCO pay the officer membershipsrequired for the affiliation as long as that affiliation con-tinues. It was seconded which raised some discussionas to the dues payment by the club. The reason for theclub paying is to insure the affiliation, which requiresofficer membership, to be valid. It was asked if the onlyreason for the affiliation was the insurance, which wasanswered that the insurance could help more people bewilling to get more involved in the club. A vote wastaken and the motion was passed by large majority. Othernew business was presented by Leon Hart who neededapproval for $300 to reserve the facility for this years’Christmas party which will again be held at the Shrinerfacility in Tualitan. It was approved unanimously. Al-though not brought up at the meeting Allan wanted itnoted, as discussed at the executive meeting, that anysolicitation for our membership list by outside organi-zations or businesses would be turned down.

The meeting was adjourned at 3:45 p.m.

In the old ads forMG it alwayss a i d , ” S a f e t yFast”. I neverdid think thosewords mademuch sense, butthen Englandand Americahave alwaysbeen separatedby a strange lan-guage barrier.Anyway, thepurpose of thiscolumn is‘Safety’. Maybewith Healeys my

motto has always been ‘Safety First’.

Where to start has always been one of my problems. Iusually let someone else start and then off I go - stand-ing on my soapbox - for what seems like days, or untilthe wine runs out. Perhaps if we only stood on the winebox the sermons would be much shorter.

Today my topic is the dreaded gearbox mount. Hiddeninside the frame behind the transmission lurks anotherpiece of British engineering wizardry - the gearboxmount. This consists of two bolts fixed perpendicularto each other. One goes through the gearbox (hence thename) and the other goes through the frame. Each oneis surrounded by two rubber grommets or bushings.

When this apparatus is functioning properly it keeps the800+ lb. drive train from launching itself through theradiator when the brakes are applied. Most often it isnot working at all. This opinion was formed over thelast few years while replacing over a dozen radiators.

Here’s the problem. The engine leaks, the transmissionleaks, and it all runs toward the rubber bushings. Un-fortunately, rubber disintegrates when bathed in hot oil.We know this because in 1356 Alfred ‘The Terrible’ usedto pour boiling oil over the sides of his castle when itwas under attack by those awful rubber people of LowerEssex. They never made it up the ladder. The moral ofthe story is...if you have rubber bushings, even if theyare only a few years old, you may only have a bunch ofgoo instead of a bushing.

When you are replacing the bushings or the radiator andthe bushings, be sure to check the tie rod. This is theundersized 3/8 rod which goes from the frame to the

transmission. Look carefully at the threads on the rodto make sure that there are some left. Do NOT rethreada rod that has been stretched or otherwise damaged. Thisis NOT a solution, only the beginning of yet anotherproblem. Check also that the frame mounting for thisrod is free of damage. Thank Lucas you can now buyhigh quality heavy duty bushings that are not rubber andhave a lifetime guarantee (the car - not yours).

If you have questions about how to install these bush-ings easily and need more details of parts wear issues, don’t hesitate to call.

Happy Healeying.

We met in Vancouver Washington on a beautiful Healeyday. The assembled group, led by Kim and Missie Young, our tour guides, consisted of a dozen Healeys and as-

After the museum, Kim and Missie took us on someinteresting Healey roads. We stopped for a time at LuciaFalls for a short break to look at the falls and tour thefacilities. George Koeber managed to have car troubleagain! As usual there were many suggestions, but noneof them worked.

After at least one more stop to look under the hood (bon-net), George was able to make it to Heller’s inWashougal. After the meeting and lunch, George andJaci headed for home with Jerry and Pat Barron follow-ing behind in their BJ9 ready to pick up any parts thatmight fall off.

A good time was had by one and all. Just a note: Wayneand Sylvia Brown, long time Healey club members, aretaking up residence in Green Valley, Arizona. We wishthem well.

If you were on the tour April 14th you know that abouthalf way thru our car developed a bad misfire and wasbackfiring something terrible. After the meeting and

lunch Jaci and I decided we would try to make it home.So with Jerry and Pat Barron following behind we headedhome.

We hadn’t gone to far when Leon Hart fell in behind usand was a welcome site in our rear view mirror. As weapproached the Interstate bridge we were really runningpoorlyto say the least As we started the incline to the centerspan we had dropped down to 5 to 10 mph. I didn’tthink we would make it over the top. Somehow we did

WHAT WAS WRONGby George Koeber

and started down the other side, gaining speed as wewent.

I was able to keep the speed up to about 40 mph untilwe reached the grade leading up to Terwilleger. Again,

our speed dropped to about 10 to 15 mph. Leon wasstill behind us and Jerry was behind him, running inter-ference with his flashers on. You can’t imagine whatit’s like to be going that slow with cars zipping by you at60+ mph. WOW!

We did finally make it home. Many thanks to all whohelped at the impromptu tech sessions that I had alongthe tour route.

The next day I replaced the distributor cap and sparkplug wires. Now the car runs fine.

George must be really proud of his engine. Everywhere we went hehad to open the bonnet so people could see it.

Our first Healey came upon us quite by accident. Maryand I had moved to California from Madison, Wiscon-sin in the fall of 1969. I took a position at HewlettPackard and Mary wasn’t working. This after she hadtaught school, put me through graduate school, and nowwas a stay at home dog sitter. I was going at full speedand Mary had just the opposite happen to her. Some-thing needed to change. She decided she would like toget back to teaching or helping in a primary school. She

did just that which meant we needed another car.Over the years, Mary has kept a simply diary. I checkedsome of her entries as they related to the Healey. Thefirst entry will impress you about our Healey knowledge.July 11, 1971…”Went to look for an Austin Healey butcouldn’t find a new one.” Gosh, I wonder why? Thiswas followed by this entry for August 22, 1971…”Al-most bought an Austin Healey today, but think it wasmore than we could pay.” If we had only known whatwas going to happen with prices. On September 3, 1971the diary had this entry… “Bought an Austin Healey atWes Behel Volkswagen at 9:00pm in Santa Clara Cali-fornia.” It was a BJ8 (didn’t know that at the time) andwas a beautiful British racing green Healey 3000. OnSeptember 4, we went for numerous rides in the sur-rounding hillsides. As I look back there were manyHealey roads to enjoy. We called our folks in Wiscon-sin to share our excitement about our second car. As Irecalled Mary’s folks were pleased and congratulatedus and my dad said, “You bought what?” And, “Why?”It was a nice feeling living 2200 miles from home.

It became Mary’s (it would take 20 years before I gotmine) commuter and after some weeks she was happyas could be in her sporty Healey. It took her a while toget used to it, however, as she did not know how to drivea stick shift. We made several trips to the HewlettPackard parking lot and when she thought she had theknack, she took it to work. We lived about three stop-lights from her school and for the first week, she justhoped to hit those lights green. I got to drive it on week-ends and participated in a number of rallies. They werefun and of the TDS (Time, Distance, Speed) variety withslide rules (calculator wasn’t invented yet). When weadopted our 4-year-old daughter, she liked to ride in theback seat. She would refer to it as the “The Buggy” andoff we would go. Yeah, I know, no seat belt, but thosewere the times back then and as unbelievable as it soundsnow, we didn’t even worry about it.

The following entry occurred on February6,1974…”Placed ad in local newspaper to sell theHealey”. We were moving to Idaho and didn’t thinkthis would be a good second vehicle there (was goodlogic but…). This entry was followed the next day with“Healey sold for $2200”. That was as a sad day, but wedid get more than we paid for it. I should have kept italong with the house we had in Santa Clara. Like mostof us, that simply wasn’t an option. It was great funwhile it lasted and everyday was Healey weather.

It was over 20 years before another Healey entry madeit into Mary’s dairy. On November 4, 1994 the follow-ing entry occurred… ”Bought Healey from John Wil-son, needs some work, will pick up in spring.” Marywas dead on with that statement. It did take work, it isnow British racing green, and I did pick it up in spring, but not the year I thought.

Well that’s another story…

and says, “Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. I havebeen with a loose woman.”

The priest asks, “Is that you, little TommyShaughnessy?”

“Yes, Father, it is.”“And who was the woman you were with?”“I can’t be tellin’ you, Father. I don’t want to

ruin her reputation.”“Well, Tommy, I’m sure to find out sooner or

later, so you may as well tell me now. Was it BrendaO’Malley?”

“I cannot say.”“Was it Patricia Kelly?”“I’ll never tell.”“Was it Liz Shannon?”“I’m sorry, but I’ll not tell her name.”“Was it Cathy Morgan?”“My lips are sealed.”“Was it Fiona McDonald, then?”“Please, Father, I cannot tell you.”The priest sighs in frustration. “You’re a stead-

fast lad, Tommy Shaughnessy, and I admire that. Butyou’ve sinned, and you must atone. Be off with younow.”

Tommy walks back to his pew. His friend Seanslides over and whispers, “What’d you get?”

“Five good leads!” says Tommy.
