preselected based on Humber’s curriculum and were made accessible through the library catalogue. The pilot program ran from Sept 4, 2013 to Mar 5, 2014 and resulted in the purchase of 516 eBooks for the library’s col-lection. The total expenditure was $55,569.

Little Free Library connects Humber with the Lakeshore community

Food for FinesThe Library gives back! This year the Library partnered with HSF to run an inaugural Food for Fines Campaign to support the HSF Food Bank. Library users who donated food received $2.00 off their library fines. The campaign result-ed in 140 food items collect-ed and $140 in waived fines.

More good news!Starting April 1st, 2014 all library fine revenues collected on over-due books will be re-directed to student bursaries. Last budget year the library collected approx-imately $14,000 in late fines.

New logo for SLACThe Student Library Advisory Council ran a logo design contest in the winter. 129 entries were received, with many outstanding designs submitted. Congratula-tions to Alexey Matyushkin from Humber’s Web Development program - the winning logo is used on all SLAC projects and promotions.

Quiet CampaignDeveloped by SLAC in response to student concerns about noise, the library quiet campaign allows students to email library staff with noise complaints. Student interest and use of the service has grown - Library staff dealt with 277 noise complaints (North and Lakeshore libraries) for the fall and winter semesters. The campaign will continue for the 2014/2015 academic year.

By the Numbers: Year in Review

Built with shingled roofs and plexi-glass doors, and decorated with neon paint, Hum-ber’s two new Little Free Libraries (LFL) are one of the Student Library Advisory Councils’ initiatives this year. The LFLs are mounted on posts and placed in front of the student residence at Lake Shore Blvd. W. and in front of the Tim Horton’s by the L Building.

The official launch occurred on June 4th and generated lots of interest and support from college staff, Toronto Public Library and local residents. The Library extends its sincere thanks to the Etobicoke Guardian and Humber Marketing and Communications for their media coverage.

Library Outreach to FacultyAn online survey was deployed to all full- and part-time faculty in April, which received 264 responses. Survey data shows that approx-imately 63% of full-time and 39% of part-time faculty use the Library’s collections and services. The faculty who use the Library are extremely satisfied with the Library staff (95.5% strongly agree/agree) and the overall quality of the library services (95.5% excel-lent/good). One conclusion from the survey

– to use the Library is to love it. The survey data, including written comments, are being analyzed for suggestions, ideas and gaps in the collections and services.

Amy Weir, Health Sciences librarian, recently developed an animated video that outlines the range of library services provided to Humber faculty - Tips for New Faculty can be viewed on the library’s YouTube page.

Izabela Hryniewicka replaced Kanchan Sthankiya as the reference and media advisory library technician (part-time position).

Maureen Hyland returns from her sabbatical in late August. She will start a new role as Coordinator of Special Projects and continue in this role until her retirement at the end of January, 2015.

Varun Verma and Shikta Costa are joining the North library circulation staff in October; they are replacing Natasha Armstrong (see announcement above) and Joanne Merigliano, who retired earlier this year.

Humber Libraries was the successful applicant for the Ontario College and University Library Association (OCULA) New Librarian Residency award. The $20,000 award will be used to subsidize a 10-month contract for a Digital Learning Librar-ian - this is an exciting opportunity to help the library move forward with innovative eLearning initiatives. Caleb Domsy (pictured above) is the successful applicant - his position started in August. Welcome, Caleb!

Congratulations to Aliya Dalfen, HRT and Business Librarian and Amy Weir, Health Sciences Librarian, for their innovative work in creating the Amazing APA Race.

The race uses the APA in Minutes videos in a series of interactive and collaborative skills-based challenges in the classroom. An Amazing APA Race Tool Kit has been devel-oped for faculty and is available for download by Humber faculty (and beyond!) on the Centre for Teaching and Learn-ing (CTL) website. Aliya and Amy presented the Amazing APA Race at CTL workshops, Humber Showcase, the Ontario Library Association Super Conference (Toronto, ON) and the Innovations Conference (Anaheim, California).
