Humane Society of Lincoln County SUMMER 2016 Furr Ball 2016, July 19 Happiest Event of the Summer The setting at Alto Lakes Pavilion was perfect for a sold out 2016 Furr Ball fundraiser. At this writing, net proceeds hadn’t been finalized but all expectations are that this year will be a near record-setting event. All the proceeds going toward the capital campaign to build a new animal shelter. Attendees were in a happy mode listening to great vocals from local entertainer Susie Weber and perusing the fantastic selection of silent and live auction items. Local business and private donors were very generous. Shelter residents (dogs) greeted the guests as they arrived – a few raindrops didn’t deter the attendees from loving on the dogs as they entered the beautifully decorated Pavilion. Furr Ball 2016 (Cont’d from page 1)This 14th year of the Furr Ball proved to be as happy and fun as a room full of pet lovers. Sierra Blanca Motors was a big sponsor of the event, not only purchasing 20 seats, but providing wine on the tables to accompany everyone’s buffet dinner. Alto Lakes Country Club service was excellent and the dinner received kudos from all.

The sun came out to light the room for much of the evening and the full moon added ambience to everyone’s departure. All in all, an event not to be missed.

Volunteer Opportunities: Fun at the Humane Society Resale Shop

On June 4, 2016, the Humane Society Resale Shop had their Anniversary Sale. The staff and volunteers worked all the previous day staging the store. As usual, early Saturday morning customers started arriving early to line up outside the front doors. When the doors opened everyone rushed in, grabbed a cart and started buying. Good buys, everything from signed paperweights to Dooney and Bourke purses. The favorite items on sale are always towels and sheets which there was plenty for everyone. Also had a great little café with a lunch special of coke, chips, and hot dogs for $2.00. Big raffle with the main item a flat screen tv with a sound bar. But the most popular raffle items were two $100 bills. Made two people very happy! The Humane Society Resale Shop, Manager, Missy, wishes to thank all our loyal customers for their support not only for the sale but every day. Reminder our “Black Friday Sale” will be November 25, 2016. For pick up of large items, refrigerators and furniture call our Resale Shop at 575-808-8540 to schedule a pickup.

Happy Tail Story by Kally’s New Owner, Orrin“Hello! We just wanted to say ‘HI!’ and thank you again for our new family member. We got her 2 yrs. ago today. Her name was Kiwi but we changed it to Kally. She has been wonderful and is a great family dog.

Another Happy Tail Story by Fauna’s New Owner, Willa"I know a few of you have seen our newest family member, Fauna, at the dog park; but for those of you who haven't, here she is. She is a one-year-old German Shepherd/Whippet mix, is very sweet, and has good (for

the most part) house manners. She walks well on a leash with Tony, and loves her trips to the dog park and riding in the car. The only thing we would change is her inner alarm clock that goes off between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. every morning! She loves to be loved and is

good meeting new people. The report from her vet exam this morning was good, and we're just waiting for heartworm test results. We feel very fortunate to have found her! She hopes to meet you one day soon.” - Willa

Hot Weather Safety Tips for Owners of Dogs, Cats, and Other Pets

With summertime weather setting in beautiful Ruidoso, HSLC urges companion animal guardians to take the necessary extra precautions to protect their pets during hot and humid weather. Each year, the warmer months bring heart-wrenching and completely preventable cases of companion animals suffering outside without proper shelter or provisions. The following tips will help guardians care for their companion animals responsibly during hot weather: • Outdoor pets often suffer from extreme hot

weather, especially when they do not have adequate fresh, cool water or ample shade/shelter from the blazing sun. Bring animals inside during hot weather.

• Avoid chaining or tethering a dog in the yard. He/she may get twisted and become unable to reach shade or water, or may knock over his/her water dish.

• Hydration is critical to help your pet regulate his/her body temperature. Be sure that pets have access to plenty of fresh, cool water at all times - indoors and out.

• In homes without air conditioning, use fans to keep air circulating or keep the animal in a cooler area of the house, such as the basement, during the heat of the day.

• Pets should avoid exercise or vigorous activity during the heat of the day. Instead, take walks in the early morning or cooler evening hours. Avoid hot concrete or asphalt surfaces as they may cause damage or discomfort to the animal’s paw pads.

• Small dogs, and those with short noses such as pugs and bulldogs, are especially susceptible to heatstroke. However, it is a concern for all pets during hot weather.

• Do not leave animals in parked cars. Even on a relatively mild 85-degree day in the shade, with the windows cracked, the temperature inside the car will reach 120 degrees in minutes. A dog or cat’s body temperature is approximately 101 - 102 degrees. He/she can only withstand the heat a short time before it becomes a life or death situation. Here are 6 tips for beating the summer heat! 1) Exercise your dog early in the morning or late

at night. 2) Use doggie boots. 3) Keep your dog hydrated! 4) Find a spot in the shade and set up a kiddie

pool. Lay down a wet towel for your dog to lie on or simply set up a fan.

5) Let your dog dig! 6) There are fun ideas you can look up on

Pinterest for the whole Family!! From everyone at HSLC, we hope everyone has a wonderful summer!!! STAY COOL!!!!!!

Later this summer, the HSLC is launching SPOT– Stop Pet Overpopulation Today! – a low cost spay/neuter program for the pets of Lincoln County residents. This program will be administered through the HSLC spay/neuter clinic.

The HSLC animal shelter receives approximately 20 calls per month from people asking for low cost spay/neuter services. They simply cannot afford up to $300 to have their pet altered.

The support of our community partners has been overwhelmingly positive. Several local veterinarians will be donating their services to perform the surgeries and our vendors are providing the surgical supplies at a discount in support of this program.

Once SPOT is up & running we will have increased opportunities to secure grant funding. Grants will not provide “seed money” to start a program, but once an organization has a performance record it

becomes much easier to obtain grants for the continuation of its program.

If you would like to donate to the SPOT program, please call the HSLC at 257-9841 or visit donatenow.networkforgood/hslcnm and specify that your donation is for the SPOT program.

Your gift to the Humane Society of Lincoln County is a meaningful way to honor or remember a special person, special occasion, or an animal friend. We will send a personalized card to your friend or family member as you indicate.
