Pints for PawsThanks to Jasper Riddle and Bailey Huffman from the Hidden Tap and their amazing crew for all their generosity and support with Pints For Paws. The event was a big success. Our wonderful Dog Walkers strolled through midtown letting shelter dogs strut their stuff. Two were adopted! We received donations of items on our wish list and raised a very nice sum for our shelter. Additional thanks to donors of door prizes and raffle items: Noisy Water Winery, Old Barrel Tea Shop, Café Rio, HSLC Resale Shop, El Camino, and Ski Apache. A very good time was had by all and the best news is that the folks at the Hidden Tap are excited about hosting more adoption days at their location.

Volunteers NeededAre you one of those people who, perhaps, has an allergy to dogs or cats or who doesn’t have the knees or the stamina to walk a dog or has no interest in the other HSLC volunteer opportunities but still would like to help? How about assisting on one of our many committees? Here are some where we would love to have your input:

• Architecture/Landscaping – this group is working with our architect on plans for our new shelter and the grounds

• Budget – this group works on budgeting for the groups (shelter, admin, resale) in the HSLC

• Communications – this group does the newsletters (print and e-), website, etc

• Event – this group creates and follows through on events in support of HSLC

• Grants – this group investigates and applies for appropriate grants

• Spay/Neuter – this group administers all things to do with SPOT – low cost spay/neuter initiative

If any of these areas interest you OR if you have skills carried over from a previous career that might apply, please call Sue on 575-808-8424 and she will get your message to the appropriate committee chair. YOU WILL BE MOST WELCOME!

HSLC Resale Shop MakeoverThe HSLC Resale Shop got a makeover at the end of January.  Thanks to the following:• The staff and volunteers

who worked so hard and did a great job

• Dickey's Barbecue Pit for donating a delicious lunch

• And to our customers for your patience and your continued patronage.

Happy Tail Story (by Harold Oakes)

This is Nina, our new Black German Shepherd. I adopted her from the Lincoln County Humane Society today. I went looking for another big dog when I was sitting here in my office this morning and I heard the front door open. Thinking it was Kirsten I said, "Hello." When I got no answer I called again. No answer, so I went to see who came in. There was no one there. I looked outside and no one there either. Dolly, the little dog, ran outside and started barking down the driveway, so I jumped in the car and went down the street. I still couldn't find anyone. This would have never happened before Thor died last year, so I went to the Humane Society web page and there was a Black German Shepherd. After I went over and met her I just could not leave her there. They called her Sonya, but we changed her name to Nina, for Nina Simone. A Classy Lady. The young man (Abel) at the Humane Society of Lincoln County, Ruidoso, NM was fantastic to work with. He got her out, let me walk her around and get to know her. Then he even got one of the cats and brought him on to the patio so I could see how she reacted to cats (we have four so it was important to know that). They even microchipped her and gave me the paperwork to have her fixed at Franklin Veterinary Clinic. It could not have been a better experience.

Donation for SPOTThe Ruidoso Valley Greeters present a check for $1,500 to the Humane Society of Lincoln County to support SPOT, the society’s subsidized spay and neuter services for pets of low-income households. We are so appreciative of the Greeters’ show of support for the HSLC and for our whole community.

The Humane Society would like to thank the Village of Capitan, the Village of Ruidoso and the City of Ruidoso Downs for their generous donations of $1,000 each to our SPOT program. SPOT (Stop Pet Overpopulation Today) is our new low cost spay neuter program for citizens in need of help with spay and neuter surgeries. Stop by the Shelter on Gavilan Road to see if you qualify. The funds donated to our new program by these municipalities are designated for citizens of Capitan, Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs only. We appreciate the support of Capitan, Ruidoso and Ruidoso Downs and look forward to growing our new program.

The Story of “Vic” Robert & Charlotte RoweEarly in January 2017, Robert (Bob) and Charlotte Rowe planned to pick up a kitten at the Lincoln County Humane Society. This kitty would fill their home with fun and companionship. Alas, when the they looked outside, there was a very large amount of snow on the ground, and more was falling. It should be noted that the driveway to Bob and Charlotte’s house is steep, preventing traffic in the snow. They decided to postpone the trip to the Humane Society.

Then, Bob and Charlotte’s friends, Daryl and Betsy Snyder, called and said that they would deliver the kitty. As Charlotte and Bob sat waiting anxiously, the doorbell rang, and there stood Daryl holding a carrier with a kitty in it. How did Daryl get to their home in the snow, when there was no vehicle in sight? He walked, carrying the kitten in a pet carrier. Where was his vehicle? At the bottom of the Rowe‘s driveway, smashed up against a tree, doing thousands of dollars damage to their vehicle. Daryl made two more trips in the snow, carrying up kitty essentials--food, litter, and a litter box. Daryl’s vehicle was drivable, and he went home. It has since been repaired. In the house, toasty and warm, Charlotte and Bob were delighted with their kitty, that Charlotte named “Vic,” after the singer, Vic Damone. Because of a physical condition, Charlotte requires supplemental

oxygen 24/7, delivered through flexible tubing and a nasal cannula that are attached to an oxygen concentrator. Vic was in the house for only a short time until he spied the tubing, attacking it and putting holes in it, almost killing Charlotte. This was unsettling to say the least, but understandable. What is a kitty to think? Fun, fun, fun!It has been a month since Vic joined Bob and Charlotte in their home. They adore him, and he seems to reciprocate. He is loving and cuddly, snuggling up in their bed at night, and following one of them most of the day. He is also definitely a kitten, who runs, leaps, throws his toy mouse up into the air, lunges to retrieve it, and inspects every nook and cranny in the house. Then suddenly, he stops, looks for a cozy spot, and drops off to take a nap. Vic fills our home with fun, love, and excitement. We cannot imagine our lives without him.

Furr Ball Westminster TripBy bidding on a trip offered as a capital campaign fund raiser, we got the amazing opportunity to attend the 141st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. We describe it as like the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta but for dogs. One can go up and talk with owners, breeders, handlers, groomers, and, with permission, interact with the real stars, the dogs (or cats). There is such an atmosphere of contagious conviviality. If you should ever get the opportunity to attend, do it!

Are Rawhides Safe?We all love to give our dogs a tasty treat and rawhide chews are very popular. My own Basset Hound Elvis loves his rawhide chews and they certainly help to keep his teeth clean. It is natural for all dogs and especially puppies to chew – that’s one of the ways they explore and learn. Rawhide is one of the most common items given to dogs to chew but beware as it is also the most dangerous.

WHAT IS RAWHIDE?

● Rawhide is the tough inner layer of bull, cow, water buffalo and horsehides – a by-product of the meat industry

● The flesh side is scraped clean of all remaining meat, membrane, fat, etc.

● The hair is removed in either an Ash-Lye solution or a Lime solution. The Lime solution is the quickest and most often utilized by manufacturers. This process is highly caustic but the most efficient for mass production

● To remove all traces of the lime solution and to sanitize the rawhide product, commercial makers then rinse the hides in a bleach solution

Know the Hazards Other dangerous additives can include antibiotics, lead and insecticides. Rawhide chews can cause acute pancreatitis, which can vary from mild gastrointestinal upset to collapse and death. Rawhide can swell up to four times its original size in your dog’s stomach, risking the formation of life threatening blockages. Dogs can and will chew off and swallow large pieces of rawhide which can get stuck in their esophagus, stomach or intestines. This often requires surgical removal. Rawhide is not considered a food item and is therefore not covered by any labeling, processing or content laws. Rawhide contains chemical preservatives and has been treated with other chemicals in processing. Arsenic, ethoxyquin, formaldehyde and other chemicals such as BHA and BHT are commonly used as preservatives.

The Upside

So is there an upside to giving your dog a rawhide? There may be. Chewing a rawhide helps to keep dogs mentally stimulated and out of trouble.

What about a rawhide's rumored teeth-cleaning properties? Anything that rubs against the teeth can help, but letting a dog chew a rawhide is no substitute for daily tooth-brushing or a professional cleaning that gets under the gum line where bacteria lurk.

What’s the verdict? For the vast majority of dogs, there’s been few accidents from chewing rawhides other than digestive upset. If you choose to give your dog rawhide treats, know his chewing style, select one that's large enough that he can’t swallow it whole and only provide it when you can monitor the chewing. If he’s a gulper, not a gnawer, keep an eye on him while he’s chewing to make sure he doesn’t break off and swallow pieces. Put the rawhide away when you can’t supervise.

Travelin’ Jack, Roving Bull-Dog Reporter and New Mexico’s Official Ambassa-Dog Visits RuidosoNew Mexico’s favorite Bull Dog Reporter Travelin’ Jack visited Ruidoso in early February to spend some time chillin’ on the mountain! Some of you may recognize Jack from his appearances on KOB-TV. Jack’s mission is to raise funds for New Mexico's animal welfare organizations, to raise awareness of animal welfare needs and to help get animals adopted into homes. He is frequently on the road with his pet human, Jill Lane, making paw-sonal appearances for organizations statewide. Jack is frequently spotted at New Mexico tourism events and is our Ambassa-Dog promoting pet friendly lodging, restaurants and activities throughout the state.Jack was in Ruidoso to go on a once in a life-time adventure: the first dog to ride the Wind Rider Zip Tour at Ski Apache! Jill cooked this idea up with Justin Rowland, Director of Operations at Ski Apache. A special harness was constructed for Jack, who rode the zip line at Ski Apache with a Ski Apache employee. Jack came through this experience without batting an eye; he was calm, cool and collected throughout the experience.
