    Introduction

    The year of my musical awakening and the year of turbulence that defined our nations

    crossroads with unnecessary acts of aggression and war were one and the same (1968). The

    draft required mass amounts of inner city young men to act as agents of nation building, the

    red scare of communism turned out to be a red herring for the build-up of the Industrial

    Military Complex (Why We Fight Netflix) using tactics of shock and awe and scorched

    earth policies (total barbaric destruction of all living things) that had been used since the

    pilgrims hit the shores of the eastern United States (and before that in history by the Vikings,

    As war was broadcast on television for the first time, the graphic images and savagery of

    war was born into the American consciousness. American military infantrymen began to rebel

    against this mass murder and their leadership was questioned at all levels of morality, ethics,

    and treatment to humanity as a whole. Many, if not most military men found these heinous acts

    of war too extreme for their civilized senses, and began revolts, at first in small, innocuous

    ways like symbols of peace signs and acronyms of FTR (F*@k the Army)[Appendix #4]. This

    internal insurrection began to spread among the troops brought into indoctrinating chimes of

    racial slurs and the standard training of de-humanization of all other forms of races, cultures

    and civilizations. It was within this environment that my uncles, their friends and the walking

    wounded of the Vietnam War built the residue of who I am today. I knew very little of the

    war, its impact or it purposes or effects on my personal life as an eight-year-old child in 1968.

    But the effects of the war on the men that walked through our familys doors left a life-long

    impression. Vietnam and the Transformation of American Life (pp. 115-118) chronicles

    the impact of Vietnam on un-enlisted men verses enlisted men, the recourse that eventually

    followed with the demographics of men of brown or black color representing over fifty percent

    (50%) of the rifle companies and fatalities while representing less than 20% of the U.S.

    demographics of the time (see Appendix #3)[3]. (reported casualties experienced for the U.S.

    in the Vietnam War: 58,000 casualties/deaths over the course of the war not including injuries

    and loss of limb, mental condition and the after effects of war like cancer from Agent Orange

    defoliant spray and 3 million, 270,000 deaths of Vietnamese citizens, the demographic

    equivalent of U.S. population at that time to 27 million losses to life). http://icasualties.org/

    The anti-war slogans ofWar What is it Good for Absolutely NOTHING [Say it

    again] War. (see Appendix #5 for lyrics) [4] acted as propaganda, campaigns, activism

    and unification of action and protest. Much of the so called turn on and fade out generation of

    hippies were fighting for their lives and knew it. Vietnam and the transformation of

    American Life (Buzzanco, 1999) tells the story that among soldiers in Vietnam, there was a

    clear correlation between status and education relating to their chance of survival. Songs like

    Credence Clearwater Revivals Fortunate Son[Lyrics Appendix #6] chronicled the

    allowance of the facades of power & prestige hiding behind cowardice and cunning as

    Military Reserve Heroes who were hidden behind the combat lines safe from harm, while the

    nave serf public was used as bullet catchers and fodder for war. Then to add insult to

    injury, we had to wait for them to come into power as Senators sons, their positions and power

    held over by generations of their predecessors acting in their own self interest of incestuous

    family of power. The result was the indiscriminate annihilation of populations of other races

    due to discriminatory forces of the day.

    The subtle rebellion of the musical advances ofJimi Hendrix (Who was patriotic about the

    U.S.s ideology for the war, but against the human abuses he saw or experienced), acted as a

    voice within the conflict and aided the cause whereas capitalistic monetary bands like the

    Rolling Stones and the Beatles for the most part let the politics and narrative of the day roll on

    without comment or criticism (Mick Jagger stated Its kind of STUPID to think you can

    change the world or start a revolution with a song [wrong]. In American Composers during

    the Vietnam Era (p. 38) it states;

    Many elements that make a song powerful as a tool to influence public opinion.Arnold (1991a) contends that Music in general can certainly appeal to the emotions andexpress the general atmosphere of anger, anxiety and fear (p. 26). During the VietnamWar era, the power of song was stronger than ever. As Gleason (1969) wrote at the sametime, As I see it, the situation is plain, if you want to reach young people in this country(and revolutions are made by the young; the old make counter-revolution) then write asong, dont buy an ad or issue a statement [their minds and hearts are not there] (p.162). In a broader context, the song has some durable attributes that many would notimmediately consider; a song is immediate, small, easy to remember, makes a point quicklyand strategically, is portable, flexible, replicable in print and from memory, transferrable toother people and other languages and can last for generations. A song never goes out ofprint (Saint-Marie personal communication, July 11, 2008).

    While it may not be possible to prove conclusively that protest music influenced

    public opinion, the words of authors like Gleason, Saint-Marie, Seeger and many others

    who lived through the Vietnam Era attest to the power of the music and the critical role it

    played in American society during the 1960s. An early twentieth century labor organizer

    put it this way; A pamphlet, no matter how good, is never read more than once, but a

    song is learned by heart and repeated over and over (Hill, quoted in Bragg, 1990). The

    history and origins of protest songs, ballads and organization via song goes way back in

    history;

    Poetry and the Police: Communication Networks in Eighteenth-Century Paris (HarvardUniversity Press) describes how street songs mobilized public opinion in a largely illiteratesociety. Every day, Parisians improvised new words to old tunes, and the songs flewthrough the air with such force that they precipitated a political crisis in 1749. But how didtheir melodies inflect their meaning? After locating the musical annotations of a dozensongs, I asked a cabaret artist, Hlne Delavault, to record them for the electronicsupplement. The reader can therefore study the text of the songs in the book whilelistening to them online. The e-ingredient of an old-fashioned codex makes it possible to

    explore a new dimension of the past by capturing its sounds.

    The Beatles did a song Revolution, but stated You got the wrong guys if you

    want US to aid this effort [paraphrase]. Although John Lennons Give Peace a Chance

    rallied demonstrators and culled a response by the U.S. government at the time [Appendix

    #7]. Jimi Hendrix represented the paradox between those who were against war [in general]

    and those who were against the violence it represented and the purported cause that was

    propagandized to the American public;

    A key figure on the Rock and Roll end of the antiwar spectrum was Jimi Hendrix (19421970).

    Hendrix himself was not an official protestor of the war; in fact, being a former soldier he

    sympathized with the anticommunist view.[32] He did, however, protest the violence that took

    place in the Vietnam War. With the song Machine Gun, dedicated to those fighting in

    Vietnam, this protest of violence is manifest. David Henderson, author ofScuse Me While I

    Kiss the Sky, describes the song as scary funk [] his sound over the drone shifts from a

    womans scream, to a siren, to a fighter plane diving, all amid Buddy Miles Gatling-gun snare

    shots. [] he says evil man make me kill you [] make you kill me although were only

    families apart.[33]This song was often accompanied with pleas from Hendrix to bring the

    soldiers back home and cease the bloodshed.[34]While Hendrixs views may not have been

    analogous to the protestors, his songs became anthems to the antiwar movement. Songs

    such as Star Spangled Banner showed individuals that you can love your country, but hate

    the governments actions abroad.[35] Hendrixs anti-violence efforts are summed up in his

    words: when the power of love overcomes the love of power... the world will know peace.

    Thus, Hendrixs personal views did not coincide perfectly with those of the antiwar protestors;

    however, his anti-violence outlook was a driving force during the years of the Vietnam War

    even after his death (1970) (Cross, 2006 Henderson, 2009)

    Bob Dylans Times are a changin and Blowing in the Wind acted as forces of

    metaphor for resistance, but often time could not overtly state their aims due to Hoover-esque

    counter-actions of sabotage and harassment by a very active FBI and CIA intelligence and counter-

    culture initiatives against the type of resistance being formed (Dangerous Dossiers: Exposing the

    Secret War against American Artists Mitgang, 1991). This Freedom of Information Act

    (FOIA) material shows the zeal of our government at the time, to act like a banana republic

    dictatorship in spewing the hypocrisy of rule of law out of one side of its mouth, while using

    underhanded devices of subterfuge and concealed interrogation and stasi like tactics of German

    fascism to address the fears and control of our nations development. Among other things, the

    assassination of Martin Luther King, John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and the riots at the

    1968 Democratic National convention were elements of the chaos and tumultuousness of that

    particular year and time-period. Americans wanted change and were at a boiling point for insisting

    on it. The leaders that would suppress or oppress this insurrection were no longer able to control

    the public through violence or appeasement of rhetoric. With white people not being the only

    voting class and black power rising in more vocal and persuasive ways, often it boiled down to

    blacks and young people to make up the margins of victory for the vote. Voting held the leash of

    power, but the realization of social unrest and a lack of order made the response by government,

    much like the response of people today, about the current fiscal cuts inspired by large financial

    institutions greed and larceny, a boiling point for action. The budget shortfalls across the nation

    that affected all state budgets and income in a universal deflationary way now, are analogous to the

    actions and impetus of government cause and effect leading to internal turmoil and sparking civic

    actions.

    Melvin Small declares the antiwar movement of the United States from 1965-1971 was the mostsignificant movement of its kind in American History. In The Impact of the Anti-war Movementon Lyndon Johnson, Small leaves little doubt that the domestic opposition had a major effect onthe administrations conduct of foreign policy.

    century finding like-mindedobjectives to get a vote in American politics, Black leaders of the time, especially Martin LutherKing saw this as an opportunity to link the violence and brutality of American policies towardsblacks and people of color to the violence being perpetrated in Vietnam (Hixson, p. xiv).By aligning a narrower objective of racial rights and the behavior of white Americas behavior tothe assault on innocent Vietnamese citizens, the ability to criticize and link the two on a world-wide basis acted as a cohesive illustration of U.S. policy and brutality.Harrison argues that this really hurt the civil rights movement, but the strategic value of aligninglarger amounts of young whites to resist the action of being drafted and the strong potential for theloss of life, limb or mental liberty aroused the unity of larger societal forces that garnered themedias attention and brought the fight into the streets as protest marches.

    The Presidents private army of CIA operatives acting at home and abroad were motivated byfunding issues and concerns [to keep their jobs] to discredit antiwar leaders and to go along withthe Johnson administration.

    The known saying of All Politics Are Local came to bear as authors Garner, Segura andWilkening employed quantitative methods and opinion surveys that showed that individualperceptions of war showing casualties drove individual perception into a wider berth audience ofinfluence, and the impact of that opinion of war more significant than earlier recognized (Hixson p.xv). The juxtaposition of the Pentagon propaganda machine selling the war was offset by antiwaractivist launched by advertising campaigns to unsell the War, thus uniting students and MadisonAvenue professional to aid in the antiwar sentiment growing at that time. The release of thePentagon Papers showing the U.S.s secret involvement across four presidential

    administrations fostered a distrust for the rhetoric that had been insincerely given and began

    the long road of distrust between words and actions that presidents had walked between

    easily as questionable as a result of this disclosure of secret tyranny. Critics labeled theseactions the imperial presidency in the actions of the presidency thwarting the Congress and theU.S. public.

    In an effort to protect its congressional mandate to declare war, congress passed the 1973War Powers Act, calling on the president then to obtain congressional approval within 90 days ofcommitting U.S. troops to a conflict. This reactionary, but ineffective deterrent to waging war and

    declaring even vague and ambiguous wars on terror left too much power in too few hands. Thelegislation did not resolve the issue, as a series of legal challenges supported by a corruptSupreme Court upheld challenges that extended up to the current day. Hence the wrenchingVietnam experience would continue to shape the contours of debate on military affairs, executive-

    legislative relations and public opinion as a precedent setting distrust of government and the

    abuse of power for years to come (Hixson p. xvi)

    The employed and haves once again walked away wounded of their excess assets, but

    the asset-less had none to spare and were crippled. It was hard to ascertain fact from fiction in this

    unstable era of dis-content, the culture had been turning away from government control, the actions

    of an unjust war that required no authorization or permission by the American Public to support

    such a war, since many of the statistics were mis-represented, dis-information campaigns were

    disguised by presidential administrations to allow public sentiment to stew. The on-going abuses of

    power to disguise and distort the reporting on the true casualties and loss of life to those who were

    most affected created a back-lash of public outcry. Janis Joplins CRY CRY BABY became an

    anthem of the mothers with military decorations of heroic medals and gold stars who wept for the

    loss of their sons and the poor neighborhoods that had opportunity shoveled to them to deal with

    the unemployment and poverty issues of America in disposing of its less that superior races with

    the of consent of Anglo power mongers. This quasi-planned genocide of non-Anglo based

    citizenry understood the conditions and responded in kind.

    When the Animals Weve got to get out of this Place became the anthem to withdrawal

    from Vietnam, the culmination of public sentiment, the later Watergate fiasco and over 500,000

    active military men rebelling in numerous unreported ways (Sir, NO sir! Documentary)[3]

    began to snowball into the movement that was the failure of the government to control, isolate

    and make men commit brutal acts of barbarism. That sky warfare and the ability to use drones

    and un-manned piloted vehicles (that we use today) to detach the man from the impact of the

    mission became the new superlative method of destruction. The forces of rock and roll and folk

    music converged to create a sense of solidarity in guiding the anti-war movement, acting as

    iconic figures of popular culture and to keep the movement and inspiration of resistance in tact

    for the generation that was to be recruited that followed (Arnold, 2011).

    It did not take a huge leap to go from protest songs to the blues. The war situation

    infuriated many of those who were made to go, but held out hope to those who were there

    instigating from within and creating chaos, pandemonium and rebellion. This unrighteous war

    gave them many generational tools and abilities they needed to not just complain and sing the

    blues, but to empower life on both ends of the spectrum. The blues became to soldiers what

    spirituals had to field-hand slaves of the pre-civil war era; hope, determination and a voice to

    see that oppression and empowerment went hand-in-hand. The fragging elements of giving

    weapons to the very men you were forcing to go to die made for a precarious situation. The

    blues were sung among service men like a dirge before death. There was no race, culture or

    origin to the blues of the service men sent into the bush. They knew they were as much the

    enemy to the other side as they were (whoever the label of the day THE Viet Cong or the

    VC; CHARLIE). Most of the people and villagers knew one thing: If they encountered U.S.

    or Vietnamese forces, regardless of circumstance, they were going to die. The relentless

    saughter of women and children, old people and the Mi Lai massacres

    inhabitants: fight for your lives or be tortured or killed by either or BOTH sides for not

    fighting or siding with them. Since everyone was used in this guerilla warfare, even the

    smallest child was used to offer shoe shining services (with a grenade in the shoe shine box to

    blow off the limb of a soldier), no one or no living thing could be trusted alive. This was a no-

    win situation for the citizens caught in the middle, so they just fought both sides with all of their

    effort and the available tools at their disposal, both sides killing and maiming mindlessly in the

    Fog of War (See Appendix #8). There were no clear ethics or morals, just pure survival

    tactics of guerrilla warfare and slaughter. One side had napalm, Agent Orange as chemical

    warfare and big bombs (The U.S.), the other side had a presence around the clock through the

    tunnels and underground trafficking setup over a thousand years of continuous battle. This was

    the perfect formula for genocide or annihilation; no one was getting out alive.

    Summary

    We have let the world go onto too long without intervention. Our ideology in politics either

    takes us too far in the sensibility of religious crusades and protectionist fascist fear or too little

    by keeping from getting dirty in the political process of local/state-wide/national and global

    politics of give and take. President Obama acts as a figure head to our future, in leaderships

    style, decision and exertion of power locally and abroad. His exercising of power locally,

    nationally and internationally is of much interest to everyone except for perhaps the protected

    bubble of The American Dream and the mythology of anesthetization that it produces.

    Whatever form of involvement that we partake in, we need to understand and value the

    propagation of values that are universal to all of us as a free people of this country we call the

    United States of America.

    If we are so distracted by our toil, our desire for riches as the only expression of freedom

    being greed and economic gain, than our lost fight has no future legs. BUT, if we see ourselves

    aright, enslaved by our own ignorance of susceptibility to business leaders and political leaders

    that feed us a vision of what they want us to have [debt for economic power via a large economy

    of much wasted spending] so we can be distracted and content, then the very liberties we have

    embraced and fought for are being lost daily and will continue to erode. Do we need to feel the

    war protest songs and the harshness of the whip on our own backs, or are we lazily willing to

    let this atrocity of irresponsibility pass to the future generations of our country to wait our their

    insurrection of this insurmountable un-sustainability?

    This musical journey was a historical lesson of lessons not learned. We are still

    assimilating the violations of the past in post-colonial and post-modern discourses while being

    slowly boiled like a frog. The lessons of the past leave us impotent to make the necessary

    changes towards the future. Knowledge gave us nothing but education, civilization comes from

    acting. As we center our gaze on the activities of the East and their actions of attaining a new

    form of freedom, we should remember that we are far from what we envisioned as free from

    the financial and economic forces that have shaped where we are at today. With any luck and a

    bit of involvement, we can continue to rebuild the path to sustain a form of economic freedom

    and to cease being held in cycles of war and violence for the retention of resources and the

    ability to live as what we have considered free lives.

    That anti-war protest song packed so much power about the evils of war that it proved to be

    a major motivating factor in eventually bringing the Vietnam War to an end. Whether it's

    another protest song or some other anti-war motivating strategy, we need millions moreAmericans to protest the war in Afghanistan demand that it be brought to an end.

    Recent developments and reports coming out of Afghanistan strongly indicate that the war

    is going very badly as the Taliban is growing in strength and rapidly gaining the advantage.Based on that fact and other developing evidence, more and more writers, the national

    media and politicians (even some prominent GOP leaders) are coming to the starkrealization that America cannot continue to waste its monetary and human resources on a

    totally futile, misguided war. The signs are beginning to point in the right direction.

    So, in conclusion, War, what is it good for? Absolutely nothing!
