Introduction

Hull Skills Academy was established a number of years

ago as part of a School Partnership Scheme within the

region. It is a dedicated training centre for young people

aged 14-16 years. Students attend the centre on day

release from their schools and they are further assessed

while working in their normal work environment.

Our remit is to provide young people with an experience

and understanding of the engineering industry. It is our

aim to provide young people with the skills required by

the industry and to enhance their employability. This is

enabled by developing the principles of work ethic to

support students as they leave their sheltered school

environment and move into the wider world of

employment.

Induction programme

Upon commencing training at Hull Skills Academy,

students first undertake a four week induction

programme. This enables us to assess your skills, while

you meet the centre staff and become familiar with a

number of issues. During this period we will review the

content and objectives of the course, provide an insight

into various Health and Safety matters, ensure you

understand the importance of personal protection, enable

you to identify hazards and ensure you know how to safely

Engineering a future

The School Partnership Scheme was successfully piloted

by Hull Skills Academy several years ago and today a

choice of training programmes is delivered to meet

various assessment criteria.

Dependent upon ability, Year 10 and 11 students can

undertake one or more of the following qualifications:

• GCSE in Engineering - double award

We have developed the GCSE programme to cover the

use of automation and up to date technology in today's

industry, including the use of ICT within manufacturing

processes. Students are given practical hands-on tuition

in the use of engineering hand tools as well as operating

within an environment which they need to work under the

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. On completion of

specific projects they complete a portfolio which is

assessed and marked. Further units are also available,

sometimes linked to schools own class work, which

completes the course programme.

• BTEC Certificate and Diploma - level two

These courses provide students with the opportunity to

develop their competence in an engineering environment.

Providing hands-on experience at level two in

engineering, each programme covers practical project

work, supported by a portfolio of theoretical evidence.

Specifically linked to the engineering industry and

employer requirements, these courses suit the higher

achiever.

• National Vocational Qualification (NVQ)

- level one & level two

This programme is known as Performing Engineering

Operations (PEO) and it is designed to provide the

student with the opportunity to develop their ability of

competence in an engineering environment. With

progression available from level one to level two in

engineering, the programme combines hands-on

experience through practical project work with a

supporting theoretical evidence portfolio. We are now

able to offer two study routes in either Mechanical

Engineering or Electrical Installation.

Working in partnership

We enjoy a continuous working relationship with a number

of schools within the region.

If you would like to extend your own provision to include

these areas of vocational training, we would be interested

in talking. So, please contact us today...
