Panda veterinarian KannikarNimtrakul said that the pandacub was healthy, had grown to26 centimetres in length andcurrently weighed 810 grams,

an increase of 180 grams in twodays.

Preparing for a debutStaff yesterday began to coax

it away from Lin Hui, its moth-er, for longer periods in prepa-ration for the cub’s debut infront of zoo visitors.

Experts from China havecommented that the cub cannow survive without its moth-er, said Kannikar, but zoo au-thorities are keeping them to-gether for the well-being of LinHui.

Kannikar said visitors wouldbe asked to walk through traysof disinfectant to get to thepanda clinic area when the cubgoes on display from July 4-6.They will also be asked to avoidcontact with cats or dogs be-fore their panda visit as the cubis susceptible to disease.

Sek’s English album “ForGod’s Sek”, available throughiTunes and the new self-titledThai release, are both sellingwell. The first cut “Mai YomTad Jai” has already reached500,000 downloads. Othertracks are “Lopa Tosa Moha”about religious teachings,“London”, about several desti-nations in England, and “PhueaTher Khon Diew”, on whichSek talks about his favouriteartists, including Jimi Hendrix,John Lennon and Axel Rose.

But there’s nothing like a liveconcert and Sek is all set torock fans on Saturday in anImpact Arena show that markshis 12th anniversary in the busi-ness.

“Actually, it’s 13 years but 13 isan unlucky number so we’recalling it 12,” he says.”

Thai Honda PTT SAG riderRatthapark “Feem”

Wilairot is confident about hischances of finishing in the topfive after he managed a sev-enth-place in the 250cc at theCatalunya Grand Prix despiteencountering engine problems.

The Thai’s third campaign inthe world championships hasbeen far from consistent – histhird top-ten finish of the sea-son came after a disappointing14th place in Italy a fortnightago. Concerns abound that the

21-year-old, currently in 12thposition in the overall stand-ings with 31 points from sixraces, might fail in his bid tobreak into the top five.

However, Ratthapark remainspositive about his chances andhopes to use the latest result asa springboard to relaunch hiscampaign, which so far hasbeen blighted with all sorts ofproblems.

As great as Kobe Bryant is,one player wasn’t going tobeat the Orlando Magic.

LeBron James learnedthat lesson.

Bryant didn’t have to.He had plenty of help in

the NBA finals, with fourteam-mates scoring in dou-ble figures in the 99-86Game 5 victory Sunday thatgave the Lakers a 15th cham-pionship.

Bryant scored 30 pointsand was the finals MVP, but

he wouldn’t be lofting anytrophies without the help hegot from a solid but unspec-tacular group that turned outto be the perfect support forhim.

“I think as team-mateswe understand what kind ofplayer he is, what he bringsto the table, and we try tocomplement each other,”Pau Gasol said. “I think whatwe’ve been doing well thisyear is understanding whatour roles were, what our abil-

ities are out there as individ-uals and make it work as a

team. It really worked outwell. I think we all under-stood how to play this gametogether and to take us tothis championship.”

Kobe’s supporting cast: Gasol, the supposedly

soft player who stood up toSuperman, had 14 points and15 rebounds.

Lamar Odom, with thesuperstar skills he willinglyaccepted a sixth man role, had 17 points and 10 boards.

Derek Fisher, the veteran

who found his missing shotjust in time to swing theseries in Game 4, scored 13points.

Trevor Ariza, the swing-man who couldn’t shoot andhas turned into a reliablethreat from outside, added15.

Bryant averaged morethan seven assists in theseries, confident when hegave the ball up his team-mates would do somethinggood with it.

Bryant stars but Lakers’ supporting cast helped spell doom for the Magic

AP, Orlando, Florida

Kobe Bryant’s seven-yearchase of a coveted NBA

championship ended on Sundaywhen the Los Angeles Lakersbeat the Orlando Magic 99-86to take an unassailable lead af-ter Game 5 of the best of sevenfinals series.

Bryant now has his fourthNBA title, and Jackson hisrecord 10th. One year after con-ceding the finals to Boston,Bryant and the Lakers have re-demption, and all the rewardsthat go with it.

The star shooting guardscored 30 points and Pau Gasoladded 14 and 15 rebounds as theLakers earned their 15th title.

With his fourth champi-onship, Bryant finally steppedout of former team-mateShaquille O’Neal’s enormousshadow and secured a strongcase to be considered theleague’s best player sinceMichael Jordan.

Bryant, who averaged 32.4points and was named finalsMVP, said the can-he-win-with-out-Shaq talk annoyed him.

“It was like Chinese watertorture,” he said. “I wouldcringe every time. I was justlike, it’s a challenge I’m just go-ing to have to accept becausethere’s no way I’m going to ar-gue it. You can say it untilyou’re blue in the face and ratio-nalise it until you’re blue in theface, but it’s not going anywhereuntil you do something about it.

“I think we as a team an-swered the call because theyunderstood the challenge that Ihad, and we all embraced it.”

O’Neal, now with the PhoenixSuns, was glad to see Bryantwin another title.

“Congratulations kobe, u de-serve it,” O’Neal said on hisTwitter page. “You played great.Enjoy it my man enjoy it.”

Jackson, who won six leaguetitles in the 1990s with Jordan inChicago, now has won four withLos Angeles and broke a tiewith legendary Boston coachRed Auerbach as the most suc-cessful coach in finals history.

“I’ll smoke the cigar tonightin memory of Red,” Jacksonsaid in reference to the lateAuerbach’s traditional victorycelebration. “He was a greatguy.”

Bryant and Jackson, whoserelationship strained and

briefly snapped under theweight of success, are again atthe top of their games.

Jackson, who once calledBryant “a selfish player” nowsees the 30-year-old in a far dif-ferent light.

“He’s learned how to becomea leader in a way in which peo-ple want to follow him,” Jacksonsaid. “That’s really importantfor him to have learned that be-cause he knew that he had togive to get back in return, andso he’s become a giver ratherthan a demanding leader. That’sbeen great for him and great towatch.”

After the final horn, Bryantleaped into the air and wasquickly engulfed by his team-mates, who bounced around thefloor of Amway Arena. Bryantthen gave long hug and shared afew words with Jackson.

The Group A victory, Spain’s 13thconsecutive win, extended theirunbeaten run as they look to over-turn Brazil’s world record 35-matcheswithout defeat between 1993 and1996.
