Newsletter No.11 Friday 6 th May 2010 Dear Parents We welcome a young Korean tertiary student to our school who has kindly offered to undertake voluntary work in our classrooms. Miss Jinny Yu has recently come to New Zealand from Seoul, South Korea to study for an MBA at UNITEC polytechnic. She is living with relatives, Colleen Songs (Year 7 student) family in Mt.Albert. Jinny has been working in Rooms 13 and 12 and will also be helping me to translate our website and international enrolment documents into Korean. KIDS FOR KIDS CONCERT I was most blessed to join other staff and Hebron families at this years World Vision Kids for Kidsconcert where a group of Hebron choir members joined about 400 other children on the stage of the Bruce Mason Centre to sing popular songs led by the effervescent and well-known singer, Suzanne Prentice. The songs were bright and cheery, the singing was loud and tuneful and there were splashes of humour from time to time. Our very own Jewel Owusu was chosen from among many others to sing a beautiful duet with a student from another school she sang beautifully and both girls received a loud and long ovation. Well done choir, Jewel and Mrs Rauch, our choir director for a wonderful night s entertainment. HEBRON AIMS HIGH IN STORY WRITING Over the past few weeks, students from Year 1 8 have been writing stories to enter into the New Zealand Post Children’s Book Awards story competition. New Zealand Post is creating a special book, a national collection of children’s stories, written by New Zealand children. The top 50 stories in the competition will be printed in the book, and illustrated by professional artists. All contributing schools will receive a free copy. As well, there is a second competition, for the most creative school. This is for the number of entries per eligible child. We are hoping that Hebron Christian College might do well in this competition. From 178 children in Years 1 to 8, we submitted 564 entries ! Thank you to everyone who has taken part. We will let you know the results as soon as we hear. HEBRON CHRISTIAN COLLEGE To Know Him, To Love Him, To Serve Him www.hebron.ac.nz HEBRON HAPPENINGS WELCOME

WELCOME

COMING UP…

HEBRON INDOOR CRICKET TEAM Hebron now has an indoor cricket team participating in a local competition. Last week, the opposition were put into bat first and some exceptional fielding, along with some good bowling and wicket keeping saw them restricted to 77 runs with 15 wickets being taken. The Hebron team so contained one of the partnerships that they ended up with minus 5 runs! Their highest scoring partnership made 37 runs. On batting we went on to score 174 runs losing 10 wickets during the innings. We had 2 partnerships over 50 the highest being 58 and our lowest scoring pair made 29. We were helped by some wild bowling from 2 of their bowlers who gave away 40 extras (a wide is scored as 3 runs for example) - we gave away 28 extras compared to their total of 65 extras! So well done Rithwick, Joshua, Arun, Gauruv, Hala, Jordan, Clarrence, Tian Wei and Abhijit (capt.). And thanks to Mr Davidson for managing the team.

MAGGI COOKING TV COMPETITION Last year, Hebron Christian College came runner-up in the National Secondary Schools “Activate” Cooking Competition.

This year, our Food Technology teacher, Mrs Hart, is entering an intermediate team in the Erin Simpson “Kitchen Showdown” TV show. Melissa Jacob, Jessica Kingdom, Sarah Airey and Annalina Crosbie make up the Hebron team. They will be filmed at next Tuesday’s primary assembly and then filmed in the afternoon doing their cooking stuff in the cooking room. Go for it girls! PETER PAN MUSICAL

Two Hebron students, Hayley Matthews & Rachel Salim, will be performing in the National Youth Theatre Company’s production “Peter Pan” at the Aotea Centre in late May. Hebron NE-Y8 children and their parents are invited to view the production at a school matinee performance on Friday afternoon 21st May. We will be travelling to the show by bus, leaving the school at 11:30am and arriving back at school at around 2pm (tbc). Entry for adults and children: $7.50ea ($35/$30 for the public performances) and a bus charge of $6ea is required for all attending students and adults. If you and/or your child/ren is/are keen to attend, complete the form below and return it to your child’s teacher or hand into the school office

MELLOW VICTORIA MUSICAL Rehearsals for the musical are going well. Next Wednesday afternoon we will rehearse Act 1 again, so we will need all the performers in the drama presentation, except for the doggie people and those acting in the film. Remember to check the newsletter each week to see if a student is required. Does anyone have a small lightweight cane couch we could borrow for the musical? If you do, please ring Mrs Huston in the library. Thanks.

WORLD VISION 40 HOUR FAMINE This year’s 40 Hour Famine will be held 21-23 May, just a few weeks away! We have more than 90 students, starting at Year 5, registered for the Famine! Please get behind them as they go without something important to raise money for this important cause. It is not too late for students to join the Famine – they need to see one of the Year 13 students to obtain a Famine book or a permission slip (for those in Years 5-8). Although this fundraising event is called the 40 Hour Famine,

students can choose what they go without – food, technology, talking… there are endless possibilities. If your child is participating in a no-food Famine, please follow the guidelines below: 8-10 years: maximum 20 hours – miss one meal (eg. 6pm Friday – 2pm Saturday) 11-13 years: maximum 20 hours (8pm Friday – 4pm Saturday) 14+ years: maximum 40 hours. Students may drink juice and eat barley sugars to replace meals.

Four ex-Hebron students came for a visit to the school today to catch up with their former teachers. Left to right, Kathlene Soo (23) is in her 3rd year at Auckland University Medical School after finishing her conjoint BA and BHSc degrees. She has recently returned from Bolivia where she undertook aid work with another Hebron ex-student, Andrew Ridler. Julie Illingworth (23) last year’s Hebron English teacher, is now residing in Sydney with ex-Hebron student husband and taking a break working in real estate before starting her Masters degree. Nadzha Dias (23) has finished her BA degree and is working as a Customs Officer at Auckland International Airport. Look out for her on the “Border Patrol” television series. Tracey Marshall

(21) has worked in the hospitality industry, working in the Promise Keepers office and is now studying for her B.Ed degree at Laidlaw College to become a primary school teacher. I continually “bump into” or meet ex-Hebron students and are thrilled to hear the huge majority of them are succeeding in adult life and are studying or working in good jobs, happy with their life and serving God.
