Oak Hill Women's Race-Walking and Running Club! How does a neighborhood women's group for race-walking or running sound to you? This could be a great way to get regular exercise and to have fun. If you have any interest in something like this, come to a meeting on Monday, December 11th at 7:30 PM to discuss starting the group, at 2906 Mother Well CT, or call Sue at 703-925-0433, or send an e-mail to [email protected].

Part 2

Our recurring theme in introducing you to the sport of swimming and the Dolphins swim team is this: Your child does not have to be a good swimmer to join the swim team. The swim team will teach your child to be a good swimmer. I grew up thinking that swimming was what you did to keep from drowning. I had no exposure to organized swimming until I was an adult. If your background is similar to mine, you will be amazed at the capacity your child has to learn all four swimming strokes at a young age. Once I saw the power, speed, and grace of good swimming, I wanted my children to learn. I dont recall what our teams win/loss record was this past summer. The statistic that I do remember is the overall time drop for the team. Our swimmers i m p r o v e d their times in all their events by more than 1 0 , 0 0 0 seconds in total. T ha t i s success. At the beginning of each season, all the children are timed in the events they can swim. At the end of the season, we compare each childs best times from his or her races with those beginning times. We had huge time drops. Great improvement! If your child attends practice everyday for 6 weeks in June and July, he or she will improve in speed, strength and technique. Children who struggle to swim one lap often can cover a mile in practice by the end of the season. That may be hard for you to believe, but it happens every summer. If you would like me to call you in advance of spring evaluations*, e-mail me at [email protected] and Ill put you on my list. * Children 8 years old and under who have not been on the Swim Team before are the only ones that need to be evaluated.

Kids and Cops is a program that affords the police department an opportunity to intermingle with kids during a fun event. It provides a valuable positive interaction between police and children. Georgetown University has teamed with the Fairfax County Police Department to offer FREE tickets to groups in the community. To participate in the program the adult leader of the group contacts Officer Doran at 703-352-2163 with the name of the group, number of children, and the game you would like to attend. The seats are great! If you or anyone you know in Fairfax County has a positive influence on kids through teen centers, outreach programs, schools, church groups, boy/girl scout troops, etc. pass this information on.
