OUR MISSIONThe Harvard Taiwan Leadership Conference empowers individuals to transform their communities creatively, critically and collaboratively.

The Harvard Taiwan Leadership Conference (HTLC) was established as an initiative to serve the youth in Taiwan. Founded under the Harvard-Radcliffe Taiwanese Cultural Society in 2007, HTLC sends Harvard University students to engage with students in Taiwan, as both teachers and peers.

Our goal at HTLC is not to impose leadership skills, but rather to foster a comfortable environment for discussion and cooperation. In this way, we challenge each other to grow and to be bold and ambitious in our respective pursuits.

Thanks to the hard work of students, teachers, and volunteers from Harvard University and National Taipei University, HTLC launched a successful debut in August of 2008. We hope that this and future conferences can facilitate a close network of young leaders dedicated to supporting each other and to transforming the communities around us.

PROGRAMSHTLC strives to present leadership in a variety of different methods, thus encouraging the students to express themselves and their styles of leadership in all different forums, ranging from teamwork activities to public presentations.

Reading & Writing Morning classroom sessions are conducted in seminar groups of 7 to 10 students. The classroom time focuses on improving proficiency in reading and writing via case studies and discussions about leadership. The small group format encourages students to share their unique insights and work together to formulate new solutions.

Lectures & Workshops In the afternoons, HTLC teachers lecture on essential leadership skills ranging from public speaking and debate to marketing and social networking. Each lecture is followed by a small group workshop, in which the students present the skills they have just learned with the guidance and constructive criticism of their teachers. The workshops emphasizeteamwork, self-evaluation, and public presentation.

Sports & Extracurriculars In the evenings, students participate in sports activities and one extracurricular activity of their choice, including dance, drama, and music. Sports develop appreciation for teamwork and fitness, while creative extracurricular activities encourage students to explore new talents.

Journal WritingIn the late evenings, students have time to write in daily journals on the themes that have been discussed during the day. Teachers have the opportunity to meet with students for individual conferences or for additional group discussion.

ABOUT THE STUDENTSHTLC brings together a group of diverse high school students united by a common goal to affect change in their communities.

HTLC features a group of high school students, diverse in passion and background, but united under one goal: the desire to affect change. Students are selected by application. We strive to compose a student body of motivated individuals, regardless of economic background or geographic location. For many students, this is a special opportunity to be immersed in an

English-speaking environment, as well as an introduction to discussion-based learning. The student body’s diversity in personal experience and language ability allows students to be enriched by each other as well as by their teachers. The conference boasts a 7 to 1 student-teacher ratio. Each classroom thus becomes a tight-knit community for sharing and learning, creating bonds between students that are deep and long-lasting.

“I was stunned by amazing people from all over Taiwan, and within the seven days in HTLC, I experienced exciting, hardworking, tiring, and funny things, all of them have become parts of my precious memories. I gained not only academic knowledge but also important life lessons from the camp, which I can use later in the future. I love HTLC.”

- Vivian Chou, Taipei First Girls’ High School ‘12

HTLC teachers range from rising sophomores to graduated seniors at Harvard College. They are selected for their enthusiasm for teaching leadership to a group of highly motivated young people. Teachers all actively develop the curriculum for the year’s conference in alignment with specific teaching goals and effective implementation methods. Before the conference, teachers have the opportunity to explore the culture of Taiwan during a week-long retreat in Taipei, one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in Asia. For the teachers, HTLC is an unforgettable foray into teaching and Taiwanese culture.

“Having the opportunity to teach and mentor these students at HTLC is by far one of my all-time favorite experiences. Watching my students grow and seeing how my small contributions can be so life-changing for them only added to the fun I had bonding with my students.”

- Alvin Siu, Harvard College ‘13
