HST News Human Service Trust Ten percent of the 1.3 million population is aged 60 and above. By 2040, 20% of the senior citizens are estimated to be above 60. At present, elderly care homes are growing at fast rate. There are 55 such homes. Many are run by private parties on commercial lines. Some 23 are run by charitable institutions with direct subsidy from government. Unlike hospitals, where sick people are treated to return to active economic life, those who are retired have to depend on their pensions or their children. For many the pension is not adequate to take care of all their needs. Fortunately in our welfare state, there is a non- contributory universal pension to all those above 60. At present, it is a little above $100 per month, which is enough for them not to go hungry. We are also lucky that we enjoy free health service and free transport for the students and the elderly. The elderly take advantage of free transport to access free medical care. With improved conditions of living and health care, Mauritians are living longer. In 2000, 7 persons were working for one retiree. By 2040, there will be only 3 for each retiree. This will definitely impact the finances of the government and will not be sustainable. At present, only about 2000 are qualified to live in homes subsidized by the government and run by charitable institutions. The vast majority of the 164,000 are still living on their own, with families or with their children. Unfortunately, the tendency is that in a nuclear family and working couples, it is becoming very difficult for children to take care of their old and sick parents. HST President welcoming Hon. Sunil Kumar (Pintu), Minister of Tourism of Bihar

PBD Mauritius was organized by the Govt s of India and Mauritius on 26-28

October, 2012 at the MGI. All the members of the socio-cultural and religious

bodies participated although there was a fee of fifteen hundred rupees.

Among all the organizations, GOPIO (Global Organization of the People of

Indian Origin) played a very important role. It was instrumental to invite

many participants besides its own local and International members. The result

was that the organization had to decline enrollment after the closing date. The

effort of GOPIO was really fruitful.

The inauguration ceremony was performed by the Prime Minister of

Mauritius, Dr The Hon Navinchandra Ramgoolam in presence of the Minister

of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) Hon. Vayalar Ravi and Minister of

Tourism, Hon. Sunil Kumar from India. And, the closing ceremony was done

by the President of the Republic of Mauritius H.E. Kailash Puryag.

substance abuse upon the children of tender age. The director of ACTReSA

and the general-secretary of HST, Premchand Boojhawon reminded the

parents that alcohol during children's birthdays teaches the children a bad

lesson. He emphasized to put a full stop upon such actions and thanked all the

stake holders for their support.

The president of Hindu Sammelan Sabha, Oudun Mohipatlal expressed his

gratitude to the HST, the Village Council and the District Council and
