Kaira KonkoTwenty-one years ago, Hampshire Scout Expeditions ran an expedition for Venture Scouts to The Gambia in West Africa, where they spent six weeks building classrooms at Soma and Jiroff schools.

This January, I listened to Explorer Scouts from New Forest North and Itchen South who had just returned from another successful expedition to Soma and the Kaira Konko Scout Lodge. They talked of the friendship of the Gambian people and their fellow Scouts on the expedition, they talked about the building of a new Crew room to provide permanent accommodation for the Lodge staff, and they talked of how the experience had changed them as individuals.

A lot has happened between the first adventure and the latest expedition, and it is worth retelling here because it is a quite exceptional story of what is possible through Scouting and the friendship between the peoples of two very different lands.

Following the first expedition, HSX sponsored three Gambian Scouts to visit the UK to participate in the first Hampshire Venture camp. During their visit, they spent part of the time in home hospitality with the Christmas family, and as they were about to leave, Marion Christmas asked them what they would like to have in The Gambia.

“A Scout Centre like Ferny Crofts”, was their reply. And so the Kaira Konko project began, led by Marion Christmas who was awarded an MBE in 2004 for services to the people of The Gambia.

After much fundraising by Marion and the 2nd Bentley Scout Group, land was purchased in Soma and the Kaira Konko Scout Lodge was built by Gambian Scouts. “Kaira Konko” is the translation into a local Gambian language of “Hill of Peace”, or “Pax Hill” as Baden-Powell’s home in Bentley was called.

The project has been supported by the Kaira Konko Scout Fellowship (now the Kaira Konko Scout Active Support Unit), whose President is Dame Mary Fagan, Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. This then led to the next development.

Dame Mary became personally involved and helped to establish ongoing links between The Gambia and Hampshire schools, the University of Winchester, and many other organisations in Hampshire. She has visited The Gambia and Kaira Konko on a number of occasions, was Patron of the Hampshire Millennium Project to raise funds for Soma School, and has now launched the Hampshire Diamond Jubilee Gambia Project 2012 in partnership with the University of Winchester to raise additional funds.

Through the years there have been many further Scout expeditions to Kaira Konko, from Bentley, Stanley’s Own in the New Forest, and further afield.

And so we come full circle, with one of the leaders on the recent Gambian expedition having been a Venture Scout on the original 1989 expedition.

What is especially remarkable about this story is that it is about long-term partnership and development between Hampshire and The Gambia which benefits both partners. To hear the Explorer Scouts talk about their time at Kaira Konko is to realise how much young people can both gain and contribute through international community development expeditions.

“Try to leave this world a little better than you found it”, said Baden-Powell. At Kaira Konko, his home’s namesake in The Gambia, this has become a reality, and I wish the project every success for the future.

WELCOME

Happy New Year and welcome to the February edition of HSN. Another year of hard work at the Scouting “Coalface” is upon us. If only we didn’t enjoy it so much we would have something to moan about.

Within these pages you will find a wealth of news and useful information about Scouting in Hampshire. It is though, by no means perfect, and if we are not doing something or doing it badly please let us know so we can do something about it.

As promised in the last issue I am finally getting to grips with the Campsites booklet I have long been promising. You can see the first fruits of my labour on the next few pages.

NIGHTS AWAY IN HAMPSHIRE?By Tim Palmer

Since I became the County Administrator a frightening 5 years ago it has been my intention to update the snappily named “Your Guide to Activity Centres in Hampshire”.

This worthy booklet was produced about 10 years ago and has not been seriously updated since, due to the County Office being so busy. I am now finally making an attempt to create a new version of it, using a similar format to the old one.

Every Group Contact should have received an email asking them to complete a form detailing the facilities available in their HQ. Those who can’t host nights away, or would rather not, were asked to let me know so I can gauge the response to my request.The request was followed up in the e-news bulletin sent out two weeks ago.

I have now received a good number of form back from Groups all over the County. Thank you to all of you who have replied. I appreciate the time taken to complete the form and will endeavour to complete my task as soon as possible.

Almost all of those who have replied and said that they can’t host sleepovers have said what a fantastic idea it is and can they have a copy please which is heartening news as it suggests the exercise is worthwhile.

I am going to try to include, where possible, venues just beyond our borders because for many Groups on the edges of the County they may be nearer than a suitable campsite in Hampshire. If you have any suggestions for this please

OUR BEAVER FLAGBy Helen Renouf

Beavers are 25 years old this year and we wanted something memorable to celebrate it so I asked one of our parents if she could help us make a Beaver flag. I never imagined we would have something so fantastic!

Anne encouraged all the Beavers to draw pictures of themselves, and then with 24 Beaver bubbles and 3 Leader bubbles – created us the amazing Beaver Flag in the world. I would never have thought that a simple “can you help us make a flag” would have resulted in such a wonderful flag for our colony? Thank you Anne and everyone else who was involved.

PORTSMOUTH BEAVERSBy Barbara Miles

The City of Portsmouth Scouts have come to the end of their Centenary Year.

There have been numerous activities in which the Beavers have participated, including a Birthday Party with over 200 Beavers Cubs and Scouts. The Young People enjoyed an enormous Birthday Cake and participated in a giant pass-the-parcel.

85 Beavers went to Longleat and had a fantastic day. It was a long day for them. The Coaches left at 8.30a.m.and the Beavers arrived back at 6.00p.m. I think the Leaders were just as exhausted as the Beavers.‘Beavering’ in Portsmouth is going from strength to strength, with new Colonies opening up. Finding Leaders is always a problem, but so far we have managed.

With Winter coming very quickly, our activities are now slowing down. Leaders tend to hold their own Christmas parties and the Beavers enjoy Christmas activities at School. We start again with our City Beaver Domino Competition at the beginning of February. This sounds boring, but the Beavers play so many games between the games of dominoes that they do not have time to get bored.

The main changes are around the rules for Beaver nights away

- Beavers can now go camping, as well as stay indoors overnight.

- The 24-hour rule on Beaver residential experiences has been relaxed to be a maximum of one night, two days away.

WELL DONE TOFareham East District Beaver Team on a great skills day, roast dinner and campfire packed with Beaver Leaders of all ages. Adam had a great tim emeeting everyone.

SILVER FUN DAYBy Sue Brinkman

66 New Forest West Beaver spent an afternoon doing a variety of activities inside and outdoors. Amongst the bases they made musical instruments, cooked dampers, did a nature walk, made some wonderful ‘junk models,’ all in silver of course, to celebrate their 25 year anniversary. They all had lots of fun and went home exhausted!

- Minimum standards for Colonies now include offering Beavers the opportunity to go

on a residential experience each year.

- Beavers can now travel abroad, but must be accompanied by a parent or nominated adult beyond the event leadership team

PORTSMOUTH CUBSBy Kevin Lee - ADC Cubs

“Give the rest of the county an idea what Cubs in Portsmouth have been up to recently” is what I have been asked to write, so hopefully what follows will do just that and give you an insight into what Cubs get up to in our little corner of Hampshire. I say little, but I believe we are one of the largest districts in Hampshire, with 23 Packs giving over 350 young people of Cub Scout age.

In Portsmouth we pride ourselves in running lots of activities for our young people, so let us go back to the start of 2010 and take a quick look at a year in the life of Cub Scouting in Portsmouth. January began with the Mastermind competition and teams of Cubs answering the traditional questions on Scouting, General Knowledge and Science and Nature. This year we plan to “upgrade” this to a “Super Cubs” competition with teams completing physical, mental and

general knowledge challenges to score points. February brought the six-a-side football competition with the 62nd Portsmouth going on to represent the City at the County competition.

April was a fairly quite month aside from the St. George’s Day parade which was held at St. Mary’s Church in Fratton. The annual Activity Hike was held in May, with teams of Cubs completing bases such as lawn darts, a giant jigsaw puzzle and getting a teddy bear across a ford, along a 6km route from Bishops Waltham to Lyons Copse campsite.

June brought the excitement of the County day out “Living it Large at Longleat”, where the City of Portsmouth sent some 180 Cubs, parents, siblings and leaders – not to mention a pile of Beavers as well. Despite a broken down coach before they’d even managed to

leave (with an ever-so-slightly stressed ADC already at Longleat) everyone had a fantastic day enjoying the huge range of activities on offer and there were lots of happy and sleepy Cubs on the coaches on the way home.

2010 was the 100th anniversary of Scouting in Portsmouth, and the Cub section was well represented at the enormous Birthday Party we held at Springfield School on the 11th July. The day kicked off with a gigantic pass the parcel, with something like 20 parcels each with 20 layers diligently wrapped by a small team of crazy leaders. There was then activities for all to enjoy ranging from archery and shooting to bouncy castles, face painting, biscuit icing (I never want to see another rich tea biscuit again…) and Lego. We were even honoured with a visit from our very own ACC for Cubs; Vanessa. Then it was time to go home and everyone left with a goody bag and a slice of one of the giant cakes.

September brought the Scrapheap Challenge craft competition, October our very popular Conker Knockout Competition and the Cross Country race along Hilsea Lines.

The Cub, Scout and Explorer swimming gala was held at the Mountbatten Centre in November, with a huge turn out from all sections and well over 70 races swum in just under two and half hours. December saw the Cubs back at St. Mary’s in Fratton for the Christingle service and a Chief Scout’s Award Presentation evening where many Cubs were awarded with their Silver Awards.

Similar presentations were also held in the Spring and Summer terms. Yesterday – Saturday 15th January - we had 48 Cubs take part in our Chess and Draughts competition. The standard was particularly high this year and I am ashamed to admit that I lost most of the games I played…. Cubs from the 28th and 72nd Packs will go on to represent Portsmouth at the County event later in the term.

Hopefully you don’t feel too exhausted after reading about that lot and maybe you’ve even read about something you’d like to try with your own Cubs. I should just like to point out that I am but a small part of a vast team of leaders and adult supporters – including the Scout Active Support Unit – who deserve a mention for all the hard work they put into organising these amazing events.

Best wishes to all in Hampshire from “our little corner”. Its 2011 so here we go again…!

CHRISTMAS PARADE WINNERSBy: Sandra Paice

1st Milton Cubs and Beavers were overall winners in New Mitons Christmas Lantern Parade in which 30 Cubs and Beavers took part.

They made their own costumes and lanterns as part of their badge work and created a new version of the 12 days of Christmas.

The Cubs and Beavers kept their spirits up as they paraded their costumes with other contestants down the high street in

a rainy downpour.

Unfortunately the rain turned some costumes to mush by the end. Well done Cubs and Beavers.

OVERNIGHT CAMP

WITH A DIFFERENCE

Well it is that time for year again. The

Troop overnight Camp for the Autumn

Term. This year we decided to be a bit

different and travel to an away

location. The scouts were asked

where and given a choice of 3 options

- they chose Cardiff.

That’s fine, I said, we have lots of

contacts down there. We then started

looking into the special activity for

the Sunday morning and found this

site called Cardiff International White

Water Centre.

Prices were a bit steep but having

consulted with the parents they all

agreed it was a great opportunity.

So we travelled to

Cardiff by train

on the Saturday

afternoon. On

arrival we

were met by a

couple of fellow

Cardiff scouters

who supplied

a minibus with

a dragon on

the side - Very

Scary. The scouts then choose what

they were going to cook for dinner in

Patrols and cooked and washed up;

watched a film and fell asleep.

Sunday morning appeared and the

weather was dry but cold. We arrived

on site to be kitted up with full wet

suits buoyancy aids raft and paddles.

After a quick instruction session the

shout was for “lets go for the rapids”.

After several trips around and quite

a few attempts to sink the raft the

scouts came out asking when could we

do it again, even though a couple of

them did have cold hands.

Back to the Scout hut for a hot filling

lunch, play some games and then find

the train home. I suppose the title for

the weekend should have been “ how

easy is it sink a white water raft???”

As this year will be at the start of FT fortnight all shops should be stocking up ahead of this event with Xtra FT items. Traidcraft for example (see website) sells more than 450 different products sourced from more than 100 producer groups in almost 30 developing countries. Remember the challenge is to find as many FT products as possible from looking around local shops and asking shop keepers which FT products they stock and why?

We are holding a South East Region Sea Scout Leaders conference on March 12th at the Warspite-Ajax centre at Thames Ditton, Surrey. The day is open to all leaders, instructors and other members of the Scout Association with an interest in water activities. The day will include:• Keynote addresses covering potential changes to the water activities badges.• Information about developments in rowing/pulling.• A chance to network with other leaders and instructors with a range of experience and specialities.• Workshops including a talk on Sea Scout history as well as a chance to get afloat.•The chance to see and try equipment including: Rigiflex and Funyak hard rescue boats, Trinity 500 and Thames Skerry pulling boats• Sculling over the stern session. Camp. What can I say? The weather

made the weekend and surprised us

all by making Wilverley look more like

Narnia! Everyone seemed to have had

great fun in the snow and we made our

morning – complete with Explorer necker!

Saturday Evening saw us having a full

Christmas dinner followed by some great

games. Well done to the winners! Most

leaders are still hurting!!

Well done to the Connect 4 Jamboree Unit (joint between Hampshire, Kent, Surrey and Dorset) on their training weekend, dinner and entertainment. I had a great time and enjoyed Marc Preston and Flic Wright’s presentation to Connect 4 about their Jamboree experience.

XPLORE THE LAKESAre you an Explorer who loves adventure and expeditions? If so why not try HSX out. Hampshire Scout Expeditions has been organising a trip to the Lakes for years as an opportunity for Explorers to see if they would like to join us.

PUPILS RAISE FUNDS FOR THIRD WORLD JAMBOREE SCOUTS Seven pupils at Perins School (Arlesford)who have been selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden next summer made presentations during assemblies to raise awareness of The Scout Association’s Solidarity Project. This culminated in a ‘Dress Down Day’ which raised over £900.

The charity is offering the chance to 60 Scouts from Sierra Leone, Papua New Guinea and Armenia to attend the Jamboree along with the UK contingents. These youngsters could not otherwise afford to attend this prestigious event and meet with the other 40,000 Scouts from all over the world, the aim of which is to promote world peace, understanding and an appreciation of nature and our environment.

Headteacher, Mrs Bernard, who presented the cheque from the school to the boys was delighted. “Everyone in the school made a contribution to help these young people so that they might have a truly life changing experience.”

STRAWBERRY JAMS There’s a definite “food” theme going on with Hampshire Strawberry Jams WSJ Unit events.

Our November event, a fund-raising lunch for some Ugandan Scouts who aim to cycle through 10 countries to get to the Jamboree was a huge success welcoming 75 parents, siblings, Mike Parkes, UK Contingent Leader for the World Scout Jamboree.

The beef was tender, vegetables steaming hot and Yorkshire puds yummy. We followed it with Apple pie and our new Signature dish “HSJ – Strawberry Flans”. Not a morsel was left! The idea of “Pay what you think it’s worth” with personalised and decorated envelopes really worked as we raised an amazing £834.13 to help towards additional unit clothing. Mike Parkes emailed a thank you ...“I really enjoyed my visit (and lunch) and you have a great bunch of youngsters”. Comments from parents included things like “It was a lovely day with a great vibe” and “We really enjoyed the lunch”.

As it was hard work, we decided for our next Unit event to be to sit down and enjoy the food ourselves, so we held a formal Dinner at Base 2000 in Basingstoke and we are very grateful to them for the loan of their facilities.

During the canapes we welcomed Adam and Mark Tarry, Deputy Commissioner of England to chat to our unit.The menu was quite posh with...• Trio of pate• Roast beef & all the trimmings • Christmas pudding flambe or Chocolate Gateaux

We held a mini quiz with several rounds during our meal and in the last round all the answers were Germany. Guess the Units Home Hospitality (Ho Ho) destination. Several Network came to cook and serve the meal, for which we were very grateful. A friend of one of leaders put on a Disco after the meal so there was lots of dancing and singing to round off a fun, relaxed evening.

MONOPOLY RUNBy: Matt Collins

Have you ever played live monopoly?? Well now’s your chance. In teams you can travel round London visiting all the places on the monopoly board, but on this run its slightly different. For the last 3+ years we have been running a version of monopoly for our district but this year we have decided to go bigger and better.

We have purposely made this run slightly different from other type’s of runs that people have run in the past, and its has been well attended every year so far.

On the run you will be put into teams or if you would like you can enter a team(4 to 6). You task for the day is to go round London visiting all of the places on the board. When you visit a place you have to phone in to the monopoly control and they will take some details ie team name, place etc. You will then find out where you can buy the property that you are at, or if another team got there before you then you will have to pay rent.

Every time you phone in you will also

have a chance to pick a chance or community chest card which may or may not help you. You also have the chance to earn more money as you go round by answering some of the quiz questions that we set you. The winner is the team that has the most amount of money at the end of the day

The run is happening on 5th March 2011, and starts at 9:00am and finishes at 5:00pm.

SSAGO NOT SAGO! By Eleanor Rendells Southampton SSAGO

When I volunteered to write a short article to explain a bit about Southampton SSAGO and what we get up to, I didn’t think it was going to be very difficult but now I’ve started, I’m going to have a hard time not to go on for pages about all of the awesome activities we participate in! The Student Scout And Guide Organisation is open to anyone at University who would like to join in with Scout & Guide style activities.

This year, Southampton SSAGO has 42 members, including 20 Freshers! We have a good split between Guides and Scouts which is great because we get a real mix of people with loads of different personalities. We also get a much wider range of activities offered to us and it’s good to be in an environment with many different points of view which has led to numerous interesting discussions and debates!

We have a weekly meeting in a local pub where we all get together to catch-up and organise any socials that are planned; it’s a great way to get to know everyone else in the society and the atmosphere is really relaxed and informal.

At the start of the year, a meeting was organised to give us the opportunity to meet leaders from units in and around Southampton. At the Guide meeting, there were several people from all 4 sections who were keen for helpers either on a weekly/monthly basis or just whatever time you could give. This is a really great chance to stay involved in Scouting or Guiding outside of SSAGO with units who understand that, as students, you may not be able to commit hours on end planning weekly meetings!

One of the first major events of the SSAGO year is Freshers’ Camp. This is definitely worth participating in and this year, 23 students took a road trip to Seaton in Devon on the weekend of Bonfire Night. As well as spending Friday night at the famous ‘Tar Barrels Carnival’ in Ottery St Mary’s, they hiked from Seaton to Beer and enjoyed a campfire on the beach and a paddle in the (not-so-warm) sea!

Every term, SSAGOs from across the UK host a Rally where everyone goes camping for a themed weekend; in November, over 240 people (including 20 from Southampton) attended the Silly Hat Rally in London! On Saturday, everyone participated in a wide game around London and in the afternoon there was a

choice of 15 different activities, ranging from a BFI IMAX screening to a tour of the Dungeons or a stroll in the parks; the day was topped off with a barn dance and another campfire! Sunday morning featured no less than two hours of silly games before Flagdown and ‘goodbye’ for another term! This term, we are looking forward to Cardiff’s ‘Legends’ Rally in February where we hope it won’t get too cold under canvas!

As well as these events, Southampton SSAGO organises a social most weeks; when you join the club you are asked to pay a small membership fee which entitles and insures you to participate for free, or much reduced rates, in some truly awesome and hilarious events. Last term’s socials included a ‘biscuit and

booze’ evening where we actually got to decorate the biscuits, rather than being the ‘responsible leaders’ in our units at home! We have also been climbing, on a reunion hike, had a film night and of course a Christmas Dinner, to name but a few of our weird and wonderful events! All of the events are in the evenings so there is as little disturbance to studies as possible. Everyone is more than welcome to come to any social but if you have 10 assignments due in the next day, you won’t have a committee member breathing down your neck.

The socials can be suggested by any member but are usually the genius thoughts of the committee; this is comprised of 9 students who are elected by SSAGO members at the Annual

The End..... It is with regret and huge disappointment that we have been forced to cancel inter-net in its entirety. This action has not been taken lightly and all other avenues of making the event workable have been investigated fully by the event Core Team working closely with the County Team for Hampshire Scouts.

Our registration numbers are very low and due to the lack of response from the section we can longer take the risk of carrying on, with the potential of making a great financial loss.

The initial response to the event was fantastic, the team as a whole received a huge amount of support and positive feedback with regards to the Scout Network section needing an event of this sort in its program. However, talk is not enough to put an event on of any size. Without real, solid commitment from the audience no event can continue successfully.

Quite an amount of research was carried out over the past few months and the over whelming outcome seems to be that this section struggle to commit so far in advance.

General Meeting in February. Anyone from any year can stand for committee if they are seconded by two other members.

I can honestly say (without any bribing from committee members!) that SSAGO is one of the best (of the many) societies I have joined as a Fresher. It is great value-for-money, which is of course extremely important as a student, but far more importantly, it is pure and simple fun! The older members were so welcoming when we joined and it was so easy to get to know people and make friends. At the start of the term, it was great to be able to relax with like-minded people at the pub if I had time; by week 4, I made sure I had time to spend with one of the friendliest and most comical bunches of people I have yet to meet at Uni.

I would strongly recommend that at whatever University you attend, you consider joining the SSAGO; if you have half of the fun I’ve had then you won’t regret it!

FIRST SASH MEETING.The first meeting of the newly formed SASH was held at Copythornes HQ in January.

The following districts sent rep’s : Basingstoke West, Blackwater Valley, Brownsea island, Fareham, Itchen North, New Forest North, Rotherfield, Southampton City, Waterlooville, Winchester and they were joined by reps from the Trefoil( Guide equivalent of Active Support) and Kaira Konko , Adam Jollans CC, Richard Spearing (ACC Active Support) and the County Treasurer.

Hampshire Scout Heritage Badge Day. 17th April at Hedge End (13th Itchen North group HQ) and is open to all. Details are in the HSN. Next Heritage meeting will be at Winchester on 3rd March when alternative times and venues of these meetings will be discussed.

Fellowship Scrap Book Richard had received more information about Fellowship Camps and four more Region III badges had been obtained. Alan Seeley reported that he had a video of

the Fareham Fellowship camp.

Presentation by Kaira Konka Active Support Unit. An excellent and interesting presentation on the work, achievements and future plans relating to their work in The

Gambia was made by Kaira Konka and was very well received by all.

The County Commissioner then addressed the meeting and congratulated everyone on their participation within the County. He then informed the meeting that BP’s old house at Pax Hill, Bentley was no longer a Care Home and was therefore available and suitable use for it was being considered. Next meeting JUNE 5TH Winchester

Future meetings October 23rd, Chandlers Ford, (Notice the date has been moved to one week later than previously advertised.) This will be our first service as SASH.January 15th 2012 TBA. If you can offer assistance, please do.

Round The Districts

Southampton reported that they had taken part in the District Christingle and Carol services.

Rotherfield had continued to provide support to units and the district in general.

Basingstoke West had two talks, a Skittles evening, their Christmas party and supported Beaver, Cub and District events including Hand Crafts, a Cooking competition and Carol Services.

Chandlers Ford had provided refreshments at the District CSA presentation and the Carol service, ran a base at the District Night Hike and supplied the Heritage stand at the District Conference. They are at present having a recruitment drive as their numbers have fallen recently.

Fareham made the transmission to AS on 27th November with a dinner for members and invited guests including the Mayor. They have 38 members at present and served refreshments at the Beaver Carol service and are sponsoring the Jamboree participants. A St. David’s Day dinner is planned for the future.

New Forest North had organised the District Stag’s Head Trophy, judged the Cubs’ Scrap heap Challenge and assisted with the District Swimming Gala. Founder’s Day Dinner planned for 19th Feb.

Winchester have held a number of working

weekends at the District Camp site, held a Skittles Evening and a Quiz to raise fund for the Jamboree Fund plus lots of tea and buns. Service Agreement is in place and updated at bi-monthly meetings.

Odiham held their sparkling Aladdin pantomime which Adam thought was great (oh no it wasn’t...Oh Yes It Was !!)

At 0800hrs on 6th March 2011 three

scouts from Hampshire will be at

4,000 metres above sea level, in 40oC

heat, they’ll be carrying all food and

equipment for seven days and they

will be on the start line of the Atacama

Crossing 2011.

Chris Laws, Richard Batstone and

Alan Braithwaite are all members of

HSX (Hampshire Scout Expeditions),

having all started scouting at a young

age, they have all progressed through

the sections and have all taken part

in many adventures with scouting,

however this year, they decided to do

something a little different that would

mean pushing themselves mentally and

physically harder than ever before.

The Atacama Crossing is an 150 mile

running race across the Atacama

Desert, Chile. The race is over six,

self-sufficient days in 40oC heat and

at an altitude of 4,000 metres. Time

magazine listed this race as Number

2 in its list of Top 10 Endurance

competitions in the world. The guys

have all spent time running in races

before from 10km road races to two

day Mountain marathons, but never

competed in a desert based multi

stage race.

As if the mental and physical

challenges weren’t enough they have

also decided to raise £6690 for Cancer

Research and would really like your

3 STAR WHITEWATER TRAININGLee Merrett, ASL, 9th Itchen South

In what seemed like the depths of winter Hampshire Scout Canoe Club took a trip down to Devon to paddle the river Exe.

On the Saturday morning we practised our white-water skills on a couple of local weirs trying them out going forwards and backwards. We also practised some throw bag skills and had a general safety brief, different methods of launching, backwards paddling and emergency stopping and were forced into practising Eskimo rescues by one of the weirs.

In the afternoon, we paddled upstream towards the highlight of the day, the big double weirs. Unfortunately on arriving at the brilliant, fantastic weir that we were going to have so much fun on, we discovered that there was a kayaking completion, on so we turned around and got off the water.

A spot of free time was then on the cards where I accidently bought a new boat in the canoe shop across from the scout hut. In the evening, rather than relaxing, John got us setting up chairs in the hall as kayak simulators, we weren’t convinced, but it worked and we all learnt a bit more. Every holiday needs a trip to the cinema, we didn’t go, John bought us a little telly

to watch some kayaking DVDs.

After working out the heating controls, we all had a warmer nights sleep. Breakfast, packed, and away to the get in on the lower Dart. Here we got to practice some of the skills we had looked at the day before. We bobbed, braced, sweeped and paddled our way down stream, taking on the all of the might of the river Dart. We experienced little difficulty and had just one swimmer. At the end it was a quick change in the car park, where our kit had literary frozen as it was so cold!

The Hampshire Scouts County Canoe Club is currently recruiting for new members of any age, who hold BCU2*/Paddlepower Discover or above. Below are a few events you could be joining us on:

3 IN A ROWThis week Itchen South Canoe Centre celebrated their latest Canoe England award.

Joan Veal was presented the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Paddlesport’ in 2010.

This follows awards for the past two years to Steve Moore ‘Paddlepower Coach of the Year’ in 2009 and to Pat Tarry ‘Female Coach of the year’ 2008.

These are national awards that recognise the very top people in the sport. They rank among the professional recipients that are coaching international and Olympic Teams.

Itchen South Canoe Centre has been accredited for 15 years and achieved Canoe England ‘Club Mark’ 6 years ago. They have over 75 adult and junior members that include 16 coaches at levels ranging from 1 to 3.

As well as many teaching sessions, expeditions and competitions, six younsters have undertaken D of E Silver training and expeditions with the club.

As you may know Margaret Taylor retired from many years of hard work in the role of County Course Administrator on 31st December 2010.

Clearly we need to move to a fully integrated ‘on line’ electronic system, where people can ‘book on’ learning opportunities themselves, and which will register course bookings, give venue and pre course details/requirements and also generate joining instructions and so on. We are talking to Berkshire as they now have such a system (although very new) they say will also be OK for Hampshire.

In the meantime, the County Office will be taking this role on temporarily, and all applications whether by email or post, should be marked ‘Adult Training Bookings’, and will go through them.

We will then as said before, be working to move it all to an electronic system, although we do acknowledge we may have to still have a ‘limited’ hard copy process running in tandem.

INTRODUCING DIANA BRUSHWOODBy Martin Rudd

I am certain you will have seen my announcement just before Christmas, that we have appointed Diana Brushwood as our Local Training Manager (LTM) to look after and support colleagues appointed to a County role i.e. DC’s/Core Team members/ACC’s etc. You may well know of Diana from her previous roles in Hampshire Scouting (DC/DCC) and I know she is keen to get started on this new challenge. It is certainly Adam’s and my wish that current County Team members who still have training to complete or validated do so with Diana’s support. Clearly, Diana cannot start with everyone on the County Team, who have not completed the appropriate adult training for their current role, so we have initially selected ten colleagues - ‘ a starter for ten’ as they say!! Over the next few weeks Diana will be getting in touch with you to arrange to update or prepare a new Personal Learning Plan (PLP) for you. I do hope you will support her in her endeavours to work towards all County Team members having a Wood Badge/training appropriate to their role, or the appropriate modules undertaken/validated for their appointment.

NEW ADULT APPLICATIONS FORMSIn the past there was just the AA form. Now there is more than one form for notifying changes to the District Appointment secretary:

Adult application (AA) form Occasional helper (OH) form Change of role (CR) form Repeat CRB check (RCRB) form

Which form(s) should be used?

For a person who is not already on the system or who are returning to Scouting after a break of service:

Use the OH or AA form as appropriate. Use the OH form for a parent or other adult who will help less than once per month, or a Network member who has no other appointment. Use the AA form for all other appointments - Leaders, Commissioners, Trustees, Sectional Assistants, and so on.

For a person who already has a record on the system and does not have a break in service:

Use the RCRB and CR forms as relevant. Use the RCRB form to obtain a new CRB Disclosure. Use the CR form when a new role is being added (whether or not the old role is being retained).

Finally, make sure you are using the newest forms which do not require a supplementary information sheet. These are labelled on the front: version 2 September 2010 and can be downloaded from www.scouts.org.uk

The new Director of Youth Program gets to face our rigorous questioning. Donna has taken on the role of supporting the Assistant County Commissioners for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers and Network Commissioner, Ray Noice.

What is your Scouting background? First supported cubs in Cyprus as a Ranger Guider and then as a helper in Salisbury before becoming a CSL in Salisbury. After getting married became CSL in Sandleheath, ADC Cubs and ADC Leader training in New Forest West. I was DC in NFW for 9 years (not consecutive!)Trainer and ACTM in Hampshire since the 1990s, UK appointments as Chair of the National Moderation Panel, then UK Adviser Adult Training until March 1st 2011.

What are your non Scouting Roles? Mother of two, now adult boys. Husband also in Scouting in Hampshire. Professionally teacher for over 25 years, then Education Adviser for a Local Authority then the National Strategies. From April will be self employed as an education adviser. Little time for hobbies but I try to swim regularly and I enjoy reading, and walking with my husband.

What is your favourite campsite and why?Harry’s Island in NFW. This is because I helped to create it when I was DC and it is a haven of peace in the middle of the forest.What would you like to achieve in your new role? I hope that my new team will be supported and able to develop and support all sections in the county. Not to forget the support for 1st Aid.

Who would you like to be the next Chief Scout? Prince William – but I guess it won’t happen (Maybe Harry could do it)

What is the worst thing about Scouting?Adults who forget why we are all in scouting and the importance of the young people and our fundamentals.

DAVID AND MOLLIE HARDEN

Gone Home July & September 2010

Mollie and David Harden died within months of each other last year and members of Hampshire Scouting and especially Chandlers Ford have lost two most dedicated leaders and friends.David started his Leadership career in Crawley West Sussex in 1961as an Assistant Scout leader and moved to Eastleigh district in 1965 as a Scout leader and thence as Venture cout leader until in 1973 he and Mollie established the 5th which met at Fryern School David ran the Group as Group Scout Leader and Mollie as Akela for many years and through the transition from Eastleigh District into the new Chandlers

Ford District in 1984.Mollie retired as Akela in 2000 and quickly took on a role in Scout Fellowship a role she held until she became unwell, although she kept a keen interest in Scouting within the District supporting and advising us in all we did.

David meanwhile had resigned his role as Group Scout Leader and taken on the role of ADC (GP) and as Parade Marshal at St George’s Day was memorable for his organisation and skill at getting the best out of the young people whilst also keeping Leaders and DC’s under control !

As the years passed David became Deputy District Commissioner and held this role until 2000 when he became Fellowship Manager ‘ taking over from Mollie and also around this time he became Cranbury Park Campsite manager and spent many happy hours there caring for and improving the site. Who can forget David digging a huge trench on his own when we had a crisis with the electricity supply !One very large part of David and Mollie’s Scouting life was the Eastleigh Gang Show and David appeared in many memorable shows with eventually his sons Alan and Tom and daughter May and daughter in law Lizzie joining him later in his Thespian career. Mollie too had a very big impact on Gang Show as she was Gang Show Akela for years and her skills at controlling back stage behaviour had to be seen to be believed.

There are so many more memories that I and so many others in Scouting have of David and Mollie from all over the District and the County but what I will always remember was the fun laughter and sheer love of Scouting that they brought to all of us and the impact they had on so many young and not so young lives.We miss them but they have left, both in their Family and in their many friends a legacy of dedication and commitment which will always be remembered
