Summary

Incumbents in the Environmental Health and Safety Officer position develop, coordinate, evaluate, and execute University Policies and procedures that will ensure the health and safety of faculty, staff, students and visitors. Distinguishing Characteristics

The Environmental Health and Safety Officer Senior is distinguished from the Environmental Health and Safety Officer II in that incumbents in the senior level have the knowledge and experience to have primary responsibility for administering a minimum of two programs within the Environmental Health and Safety Department. Additionally, this classification may oversee the Environmental Health and Safety Officers and/or Technicians.

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Environmental Health and Safety Officer Senior reports to an Assistant Director. This classification may oversee the Environmental Health and Safety Officers and/or Technicians.

Typical Functions

1. Administers at least two programs within the Environmental Health and Safety Office such as occupational safety, industrial hygiene, or laboratory and biological safety.

2. Performs laboratory inspections.3. Performs radioactive sealed source inspections.4. Ensures proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials according to government

regulations.5. Serves as the primary contact for and responds to reports of leaks, spills, and any other releases

of potential environmental pollutants.6. Develops, implements, and monitors programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal,

state, and local regulations; provides training as necessary.

7. Provides recommendations for improvement and advancement of occupational safety programs.

8. Actively engages in and regularly attends committee meetings as assigned.9. Inspects University facilities to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 1. Ability to communicate and interact with various levels of personnel.2. Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.3. Ability to develop, implement, and enforce safety programs and protocols.4. Knowledge of federal, state, and local safety regulations, protocols, and/or procedures.5. Skilled in developing and conducting training presentations.6. Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.7. Ability to operate, test, and/or repair monitoring, sampling, and/or analytical equipment and

instruments.8. Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in related field plus five years of relevant experience is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position requires considerable physical activity, including the handling of heavy weight objects up to 50 pounds and/or standing or walking more than five hours per day. Employees are exposed to unusual elements such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises. The work environment involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
