Summary

Reporting and Supervisory Responsibilities

The Library Assistant Senior reports to a Library Professional. This classification trains and guides student and benefited employees.

Typical Functions

1. Assists patrons in the use of library resources and materials, in person and/or via email.2. May teach library instruction sessions.3. May provide individual research consultations in person or online.4. Provides reference service at the Information desk, Library Media Collections, Special Collections

and Archives, and Circulation Desk.5. Oversees maintenance of office equipment, including scanners and digital camera.6. Creates and maintains statistical data, reports, and databases.7. Operates the database and mechanical features of the Borrower Automated Retrieval Network

(BARN). 8. Processes and monitors interlibrary loan requests.9. Ensures that subscribed resources are functioning, accessible, and easy to use.10. Assists graduate students in tracking and submitting theses and dissertations.11. Coordinates creation and upload of content to Digital Commons.

12. Coordinates the acquisition, preparation, and digitization of materials for digital collections.13. Performs minor book and document repair and builds supports/enclosures.14. Monitors collection storage climates.15. Participates in staging, fabrication, and building of exhibition spaces, including matting and

framing of exhibition materials.16. Assists in creating and printing of graphic design work.17. Uses various record formats (e.g. machine readable cataloging, Dublin Core, etc.) to create and

edit records in various databases and repositories.18. Exercises judgment to interpret local, national, and international rules along with a variety of

software systems, to create and edit and catalogs and records.19. Maintains various databases and catalogs; troubleshoots technical problems; and migrates

records to new systems.20. Coordinates projects, provides training, reviews work, and provides guidance for employees. 21. Guides student employee’s daily work and projects including maintaining schedules and

approving time cards.22. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

1. Knowledge of or ability to learn library related computer programs.2. Computer skills, including Word, Excel, and web browsers.3. Ability to meet deadlines.4. Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and

public patrons.5. Ability to organize work effectively, conceptualize and prioritize objectives, and exercise

judgement.6. Knowledge of the principles and procedures of professional library work including methods,

practices, and techniques of library original and copy cataloging and classification.7. Knowledge of computerized cataloging, bibliographic and circulation system databases.8. Knowledge of standard bibliographic sources, bibliographic form, and verification tools.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience; or an associate degree plus two years of experience; or Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily occasional temperature changes. Employees are occasionally required to stand, sit, sort, hold, squat, stoop, walk, write, and reach with hands and arms.
