INTRODUCTION

The practicum is a health promotion relatedwork experience for health promotion majors orminors. The type of work may vary dependingupon the setting, and may include experiences ina variety of organizations (governmentagencies, volunteer agencies, privateinstitutions, public institutions, corporations,etc.)

The Health Promotion Practicum is offeredunder the course number HED 393 and may betaken for 2-5 credit hours. For each credit hourtaken, the practicum student must log 40 clockhours on the job site. Thus, students enrolled fortwo credit hours must log 80 hours, three credithours would require 120 hours, etc. Since thepracticum is taken along with other classes aspart of a student’s regular load, it is importantto plan a schedule that will accommodate theextra hours and travel time.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

A. Through a work related experience in anorganization that has a healthpromotion component, the student shallbe able to demonstrate an understandingof the:• mission or purpose of the organization• services and programs provided by

the organization• organizational/administrative

structure of the organization• financial structure of the

organization• public relations/marketing

components of the organization

B . To gain practical experience in the areasof:• planning/delivering of

programs/services• routine operations and special

projects

C. To practice and enhance skills in:• written communications (reports,

summaries)• oral communication (public speaking,

presentations, listening)• program evaluation• working with groups• time management• interpersonal skills

ARRANGING THE PRACTICUM

Students are responsible for making allarrangements for the practicum. To secure apracticum site, the student will need to:

1. meet with his/her advisor the semesterprior to the practicum to discuss the typesof opportunities, procedures,requirements, and expectations;

2. prepare vita;

3. select a potential practicum site;

4. make an appointment with theappropriate personnel at the potentialpracticum site and explain how thepracticum works, what the organizationsand student’s responsibilities are, andhow much time will be involved;

5. complete and submit the practicumapplication form to the practicuminstructor (preferably the semester priorto the practicum;

6. Attend a practicum orientation meetingwith the other practicum students andthe practicum instructor;

7. begin the practicum experience withinthe first two weeks of the new semester.

REQUIREMENTS

On the job site, practicum students representthemselves as well as the university and thehealth promotion program. The impressions a

student makes during the practicum will have adirect bearing on obtaining an internshipassignment and may also impact the placementof future practicum students. Thus, it isimperative that professionalism be a majorfocus throughout the practicum. Students areexpected to be on time, follow through on tasks,practice effective interpersonal skills, dressappropriately, and maintain a positiveattitude.

In addition to satisfactory worksiteperformance, the following academic criteriamust also be fulfilled: (All reports and weeklylogs submitted by students must be typed.)

1. Attend orientation and wrap-up seminarat BGSU;

2. Complete student orientation report bythe second week of the practicum;

3. Keep a written daily log of hours andactivities for each work and submit aweekly descriptive report of experiences;

4. Submit a midterm and final evaluationfrom the worksite supervisor (use formprovided);

5. Log sufficient hours at the practicum siteto meet the criteria for the assignedcredit hours (120 hrs minimum for 3 hrscredit).

6. Submit a final report (typed) thatsummarizes what you learned.(approximately 2 pages)

EVALUATION CRITERIA

The expectation for practicum students is thatthey represent themselves in such a way as tobring honor to themselves and the University.The following criteria will be used to evaluatethe students work.

1. Log sufficient hours to meet the criteriafor the assigned credits (120 hrs minimumfor 3 hrs credit).

2. Submit reports and other assignments ontheir due dates (including weekly reportsand the end of the semester report).

3. Perform assigned duties in a professionalmanner.

4. Participate in scheduled seminars andmeetings.

5. Obtain at least a 4.5 “general overallrating” on the Health PromotionPracticum Evaluation Form (to receive an“A”).

6. Grading Rubric:• 20% midterm evaluation• 30% final evaluation• 25% professionalism (includes weekly reports)• 25% final report

LIABILITY INSURANCE

Most practicum sites will require students tocarry student medical professional liabilityinsurance during their internship assignments.The University Office of Risk Managementautomatically provides student interns with$1,000,000 of coverage per claim with a$3,000,000 annual aggregate. Coverage isprovided for claims arising out of a real oralleged incident when the injury being claimedis the result of an act or omission while thestudent is performing activities related to theireducational curriculum. Faculty members areresponsible for notifying risk management ofthe students to be covered. OPTIONAL INSURANCE

Interns may obtain travel risk insurancethrough the Office of Field Experience in theCollege of Education and Human Development.The insurance costs $.10 per day ($10.50 for 15weeks) and provides up to $5,000 for injuriessustained while traveling to and from theinternship site and while participating in any

activities arranged by the sponsoringorganization.

Excess automobile liability insurance isprovided to interns driving their personalvehicles to their assigned sites. This insuranceis excess over any other valid and collectibleinsurance that is carried by the vehicle owneror operator. Students that wish to securecoverage need to complete the excessautomobile liability insurance form found athttp://www.bgsu.edu/offices/riskmgmt/resour ces/auto.pdf . Forms are also available from theOffice of Field Experiences; phone 419-372-7389.

SUGGESTED PRACTICUM ACTIVITIES

The nature of activities and experiences willvary depending upon the organization. Thefollowing activities are examples of the typesof things you may wish to pursue during thepracticum:

1. Assist professional staff in carrying outroutine responsibilities;

2. Attend staff meetings and specialfunctions;

3. Assist in or present instructionalpresentations;

4. Assist in the identification and diagnosisof a program need or problem asdetermined by the organization;

5. Assist in the preparation of reports andcurricula;

6. Participate in activities that giveinsight into the purpose or mission of theorganization;

7. Develop educational displays andpresentations;

8. Become familiar with responsibilities ofhealth promotion specialist within theorganization;

9. Develop news releases.
