There are so many fun things that you can do with vinyl to

make your world more colorful. In this how-to series, we will

provide you with a list of needed tools, a “vinyl basics” guide to

get you going, some amazing finished examples for you to enjoy

VINYL GLOSSARY OF TERMS

VINYL: A plastic material with

an adhesive backing used for

signs, stencils and crafting

projects. It may have a perma-

nent or removable adhesive.

LINER: The non-stick backing

to a sheet of vinyl. With some

electronic cutting machines

the liner acts as the carrier so a

mat is not required.

WEED: To remove excess vinyl

from the object which is be-

ing used. Example: remove the

weeds —keep the plant.

PICK: To remove the negative

portion of letters. Any bit that

is not part of the actual design.

Example: the inside portion of

a letter “O” or “P” or a part

of the design that needs to be

removed to reveal the design.

BURNISH: To rub firmly in

place. The action of rubbing

helps the vinyl adhere to the

surface it is being applied to.

LAYER: To add an additional

layer(s) to the base vinyl design.

Example: A butterfly might have

5 different colored layers to

give a colorful dimension.

Settings will vary for different machines, so please consult the instructions that came with your cutting machine for recommendations. For general use, select a low pressure setting to cut.

PREP1. Make sure the paper saver mode is turned off.

2. Set the blade depth to #4 on a Cricut Expression™ machine.

3. Use a low pressure setting to cut vinyl; it should only cut through the vinyl and not the paper backing. Use setting #2 on the original Cricut®

and the low pressure setting on both the Create™ and

Expressions™ machines.

4. Set the cutting speed according to the level of intricacy—slower

for more intricate and faster for simple cut outs

like a cactus.

5. If your machine allows you to create a text box around words, then use this setting.

6. Place vinyl on cutting mat accord−ing to manufacturer’s directions (or feed it through your other cutting device), ensuring that any wrinkles or bubbles are removed prior to cutting.

7. Select a design, letter or phrase to cut making sure that settings have all been adjusted for vinyl. For correct size of cuts, we highly recommend testing on paper before cutting vinyl.

CUT8. Cut selection and remove vinyl from machine.

9. Use hook or pick tool to “weed” away excess vinyl from selected design. Be sure to clean out the centers of letters or objects.

TRANSFER10. Using transfer tape the size of your design, remove transfer tape backing and apply it over the vinyl design. Rub over the transfer tape with a flat scraper tool.

11. Peel transfer tape (and vinyl design) away from vinyl backing. Make sure that all the vinyl elements lift up and stick to the transfer tape.

12. With the clear transfer tape, you can now align your design on a clean, dry surface. Vinyl will not adhere to a moist or greasy surface.

13. Rub design down using firm pressure with any flat application tool.

14. Carefully peel away transfer tape from vinyl. If the vinyl pulls off with the transfer tape, lay transfer tape back down and burnish again until transfer tape can be removed clear and free from vinyl.

SET UP: Stain frame and prepare to embellish with floss, stamped spool images and attachments.

Step 1: Cut out lettering using plantin’ Schoolbook Cricut cartridge. Cut all lettering at 2” (cut “leaves me in” at 1”).

STEP 2: Drip a few dots of each alchohol ink color onto felt applicator and dab onto vinyl letters. Let dry.

STEP 3: Layer “stitches” onto shadow letters using transfer tape.

STEP 4: Apply “Sewing leaves me in” lettering to top of frame with transfer tape.

STEP 5: Spray canvas with Wild Plum Color Wash and let dry. Adhere “stitches” to canvas, slightly overlapping letters. Hand stitch a line below lettering and around a few letters.

STEP 6: Stick canvas on cardboard backing and insert canvas into frame.

STEP 7: Add attachments to outer frame.

tipColor coordinate your projects by using Color Wash. Spray on papers, fibers, fabric and more.

Step 1: Cut two strips 2” x 6¾” in the Reverie paper. Ink edges and apply to end of board about ½” from side using Mod Podge.

STEP 2: Cut red pattern paper ½” x 6¾”, ink edges and apply with Mod Podge to top of printed black paper ¼” from side as shown.

STEP 3: Using the Silhouette machine, cut the word “BLESS” at 6” x 12” with Almond vinyl using Bookman Old Style font.

STEP 4: Apply the word “BLESS” to the wood using transfer tape.

STEP 5: Cut “this house” 3” x 10” with Ladybug Red vinyl, using Lucida Calligraphy font. Lift lettering from liner sheet and then lay “this house” on top of the word “BLESS”. Burnish letters and then carefully remove transfer tape.

tipto successfully transfer vinyl, use a squeegee tool to burnish the transfer tape onto the vinyl, allowing the vinyl to come off with the transfer tape.

Supplies Vinyl: Oh My Crafts Vinyl (12 sheets of 12” x 24” White, 1 sheet Purple, 1 sheet Dark Grey, 1 sheet Metallic Grey, 5 sheets Transfer Tape); Cartridge: Cricut (Accent Essentials and Paper Lace); Tools: Cricut tool kit (Spatula), Scissors, Craft knife.

Finished size: Approx. 3’ x 6’ on wall

Step 1: Cut 3 large flowers, then program for 6 small flowers. Note: 3 large white flowers and 6 small flowers fit on a 12” x 24” sheet. Continue until desired quantity—we cut out 35 large and 70 small white flowers. Weed excess vinyl away from flowers. Apply transfer tape individually. Burnish and remove from liner with vinyl flower attached to transfer tape.

STEP 2: When placing flowers on wall it is best to place them in threes. 1 big flower with 2 small. This will provide a consistent pattern.

STEP 3: Burnish flowers onto wall using vinyl scraper. Pull off the transfer tape, leaving flower on the wall.

STEP 4: Step back occasionally and check pattern. If you get to the ceiling and there are petals reaching over the ceiling edge use a craft knife to trim off extra.

STEP 5:Once all white flowers are on, adhere purple and grey accent flowers in groups of 2 & 3 across mural.

tipn Re-use transfer tape as long as it will allow.n Vinyl works best on non-glossy finishes.n You may have to adjust the amount of

flowers depending on the wall height.n By doing this project yourself, you can save

FRAMEStep 1: Use red distress stain to cover frame and fantastix stick to fill in the inner corners of the frame.

STEP 2: Cut out 2 star borders in blue vinyl. Weed and pick centers.

STEP 3: Apply transfer tape to one border and burnish. Remove transfer tape with vinyl stars attached one border at a time.

STEP 4: Place one border in the lower right corner and the other border in the upper left corner, then burnish.

STEP 5: Gently dab the paint dab-ber all around the stars leaving some red show-ing and fill in the center of the stars. Lightly dab paint all over frame as little or as heavy as desired. Let dry.

STEP 6: Remove star borders stencil carefully.

STEP 7: Once frame is dry, dab antique linen stain all over frame.

CENTER INSERTStep 1: Trim script/line flower paper to 10⅛” x 8⅛”.

STEP 2: Cut “God Bless America” out at 4¼”. Next, weed around letters and pick centers out.

STEP 3: Cut out 1 star border in red vinyl and insert into Swiss dot embossing folder and emboss.

STEP 4: Remove 2 of the star centers and discard the remaining border.

STEP 5: Apply star to center of blue star and repeat.

STEP 6: Apply transfer tape to letters, then burnish. Remove lettering from liner sheet and apply to center of paper.

STEP 7: Clean glass (inside and out) and reassemble frame.

tipIt only takes light pressure on the transfer tape to adhere the vinyl to paper.

STEP 4: Burnish flowers onto door or wall using vinyl scraper and medium pressure. Pull off the transfer tape, leaving flower on the wall.

STEP 5: Rotate letters as you place them to create a fun style for your child’s bedroom door.

STEP 6: Repeat for other children’s room and let them enjoy.

tipIf your daughter enjoys Hello Kitty, then you can also cut out flower designs that have Hello Kitty images inside. Because they are intricate designs, you may want to cut them out larger.

BUTTERFLYStep 1: Cut all layers for butterfly, then weed excess vinyl and pick out centers.

STEP 2: Begin with base of butterfly and layer upwards.

STEP 3: Cut a piece of transfer tape to cover the vinyl that you are transferring without a lot of excess on the edges.

STEP 4: On most projects, the layer being applied is about 1/16 of an inch from the edge of the previous layer of vinyl.

STEP 5: Use pick to lift and place small pieces of vinyl directly on to butterfly.

STEP 6: Once all layers are in place, use transfer tape to move butterfly to sign surface.

STEP 7: Repeat the same steps for each bird and flower.

NOTE: The cutting machine should remain at the same size setting for your entire project. The layers are sized to be perfect for layering.

tipthe secret to any successful vinyl application is transfer tape. If you are doing letter-ing, layering or even placing your first Hello Kitty on your daughter’s wall, this stuff is a must have!

NOte: to make the transfer tape last as long as possible, cut to the size of the word or shape with approximately ½” extra around the edges.
