In this day and age it is no longer necessary to be signed to a record label to make money with music.

There are plenty of examples of independent musicians that are able to make a decent income and get plenty of worldwide recognition just by playing their cards right in the game of online marketing.

This is a big world and there is a market for everything. Your album included. In this guide I am going to tell you exactly what you need to do in order to successfully promote and sell your music to a large number of people. This is a step-by-step guide that is intended to help independent musicians quit their jobs and spend all of their time doing what they love the most.

Step 1: Master Your Record Before you begin thinking about selling your music, you need to make sure it’s loud enough. Compare your record to a commercially produced track of the same genre and use the following criteria to evaluate its sound quality:

• Loudness

• Master EQ

• Signal-to-noise ratio

If you produced your record yourself, there is a chance it needs some mastering to place it on par with commercially released music. I know plenty of producers that are able to master their own music quite well, but for the majority of us independent musicians it’s better to outsource mastering to somebody

else.

The reason is simple: a mastering engineer is unbiased to your music; his ears aren’t tired of listening to it every day. If you have a ton of money, I would check with some established studios in your area. If you’re on a budget, the internet has plenty of quality mastering services.

I would check Craigslist for any freelancers in your area. If you choose to do the latter, beware of amateurs and always ask for examples of previous work. If you’re dead broke, ask your buddy who also produces music to master your record for you. Since it’s free, you can discard it if you don’t like it and save up for professional mastering.
