    How to Memorize Scripture

    Why should I memorize scripture? Reason #1

    The Importance of The Bible

    Heb_4:12 For the word of God isquick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and isadiscerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

    In searching for heaven-revealed truths, the Spirit of God is brought into close connectionwith the sincere searcher of the Scriptures. An understanding of the revealed will of Godenlarges the mind, expands, elevates, and endows it with new vigor, by bringing its faculties intocontact with stupendous truth. No study is better to give energy to the mind, to strengthen theintellect, than the study of the word of God. No other book is so potent in elevating the thoughts,in giving vigor to the faculties, as is the Bible, which contains the most ennobling truths. If God's

    word were studied as it should be, we would see breadth of mind, stability of purpose, nobility ofcharacter, such as is rarely seen in these times. {Signs of the Times, January 30, 1893 par. 4}

    John 5:39 2 Timothy 2:15

    Every Christian should become thoroughly acquainted with the word of God. The importanceof this study can hardly be over estimated. "Given by inspiration of God," able to make us "wiseunto salvation," rendering "the man of God perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works,"the Book of books has the highest claim to our reverent attention. We must not be satisfied witha superficial knowledge, but must seek to learn the full meaning of the words of truth, and to

    drink deep of the spirit of the holy oracles. {ST, May 19, 1887 par. 1}

    Pro 2:2 So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, andapply thine heart to understanding;

    It is of but little profit to read a certain number of chapters daily, or to commit to memory astipulated amount,withoutcareful thought as to the meaning of the sacred text. Earnestattention and prayerful study are required. Some portions of Scripture are, indeed, too plain to

    be misunderstood; but there are others whose meaning does not lie upon the surface, to beseen at a glance. Scripture must be compared with scripture; there must be careful research andpatient reflection.And such study will be richly repaid. As the miner discovers veins of preciousmetal concealedbeneath the surfaceof the earth, so will he who searches the word of God asfor hid treasure find truths which are concealed from careless seekers. {ST, May 19, 1887 par. 2}

    Great pains should be taken to establish a right habit of study. If the mind wanders, bring itback. If the intellectual and moral taste has been perverted by over-wrought and exciting tales offiction, so that the mind is disinclined to the diligent study of God's word, then there is a battleto be fought with self to overcome this depraved habit. A love for fictitious reading should be

    broken up at once; and rigid rules should be enforced to hold the mind in a proper channel. Thepernicious practice of story-reading is one of the means employed by Satan to destroy souls. The

    mind that is occupied with exciting stories loses all relish for solid reading that would improvethe memoryand strengthen the intellect. {ST, May 19, 1887 par. 3}Our memory can be improved.

    I am acquainted with many sad examples of the evil effects of thisbaneful practice. I haveknown persons ofwell-balanced minds, whom God had endowed with mental powers of noordinary character, to take up the reading of romance; and the more they indulged theappetite for this kind of mental food, the greater was the demand. The imaginationconstantly craved its accustomed stimulus, as the inebriate longs for his wine or tobacco.Their mental and moral powers were weakened and perverted. They lost their interest inthe Scriptures, and their relish for prayer; and they were as truly ruined, mentally andspiritually, as is the liquor drinker or the tobacco devotee. Novel-readers are mental

    inebriates; and they need to sign a pledge of total abstinenceas verily as does the victimof any other form of intemperance. {ST, May 19, 1887 par. 4}
