How ToQuick Tipsbrought to you by:

Richard VanDuyne, Sr. Vice President/ Market Leader Commerce National Bank

Choosing the right bank that fi ts your needs is much easier today because there are many more options available to consumers.

The fi rst thing you may want to consider is the type of banking business that fi ts your needs. Most people place an emphasis on customer service and like the idea of knowing the personnel at the bank. A lot of times, people prefer banks for their friendliness. Building a one-on-one relationship with your banker reinforces your trust and confi dence in your bank.

“Knowing your banker and having your banker know you is how you build a strong relationship,” said Richard VanDuyne, senior vice president/market leader for Commerce National Bank.

Look for a bank that is close geographically to where you live or work and offers the same or similar services as other banks in town. Or you may want to gauge your choice on the bank’s accessibility. If you are on the road every day, for example, and a bank is located in a convenient spot along your regular travel routine, that might be the best one for you.

Most banks have similar services these days, but there are some differences. A good way to check the services a bank offers is to look up its website. That will supply you with information about the types of checking and savings accounts that are offered, interest rates on loans, what special services might be available, etc. Know ahead of time what kinds of things you are looking for in terms of service, products and perks. Does the bank you have in mind offer online banking

and/or ATM service? Does it offer good checking account products? Does it offer direct deposit? Are the bank’s interest rates competitive? Answers to these and other pertinent questions can usually be found online. If you have narrowed your choice down to two or three banks in terms of convenience and the type of banking business you do, then visiting the websites of the banks could help you make your fi nal decision.

After you have researched banks online in terms of convenience and service, take the time to make a personal visit. Talk to the bankers and loan offi cer. Are they someone you can speak openly with about your fi nances? Are they decision makers? Do you think you would feel comfortable coming to the bank offi cer and sitting down with a loan offi cer? Different banks sometimes have different hours when the lobby is open to customers. Which bank’s hours work best

with your work schedule? If you have just moved

to a new location, you may want to ask neighbors which bank they would recommend. Use that to narrow your choices, and then do your own research based upon the factors listed above.

Something else that is important in terms of choosing a bank is to know yourself. What is your purpose in opening an account? Do you have

a plan to build a savings account or do you just want an account so that you have a place to have your paycheck deposited or where you can get your paycheck cashed? Is earning interest important to you? Answering these questions honestly can help you not just in choosing a bank, but also in gauging your

own personality in terms of fi nances. A good bank and banker can be very benefi cial to you in helping with your fi nances, whether it is savings, loans or retirement.

“A knowledgeable banker and a strong fi nancial institution are important resources for you,” VanDuyne said.

If you’re serious about savings, then you will want a bank that offers the best opportunities to its customers for keeping money deposited there. But beware. Before you make any arrangements, be aware of what the penalties are for early withdrawals. If you know you might have diffi culty leaving the money untouched, then you may want to consider a contract where the penalties are less severe, even though the interest is not as high. Your banker can help you with these decisions, but in the long run, it is best to know yourself and make decisions accordingly.

Is your bank a 1. Community Bank? Community banks make decisions locally. Large publically-traded banks are not as fl exible, even on the small but important things, like fl exible payment and terms.

Develop a 2. relationship with your banker. Have a relationship with your bank and banker who can understand your situation and needs.

Does your bank 3. offer a full array of products and services? Local community banks are more likely to customize products and services to better meet your individual needs.

4. Does your bank have the latest in online banking technology? Make sure your bank offers the latest and user-friendly online banking, featuring electronic bill pay, as well as mobile banking for on-the-go users.

The foundation of a home impacts almost every other structural and architectural element. If movement associated with settling or upheaval compromises the foundation, the damage will trickle up through the rest of the structure.

In order to avoid long-term problems, it is essential to take care of any foundation repairs immediately and keep the foundation in good shape with preemptive steps and maintenance. Doing so will save time and money in the long term and help keep your home in prime condition.

When repairing a foundation, there are more than 1,600 patented foundation repair methods. When choosing the proper method for homes in the Brazos Valley, one needs to select a method designed specifi cally for the soil upon which the structure is placed.

Most of us probably take foundations for granted. When something is amiss, we may not know the warning signs. As a homeowner, it’s essential to become well informed on this matter so that you can keep an eye out for symptoms of foundation problems.

Do you think you need foundation repair for your home? Symptoms of a bad foundation can be found on the interior and exterior of your home.

One exterior sign is cracks in bricks or mortar, or brick separation around windows and doors. Walk around your home and look for bricks that

have separated and large cracks in the mortar. If you fi nd them, chances are you need some work. Check for curvature of the brick line. This can be easily checked by looking along the sides of your home to see if the bricklines are straight, not curved.

Another exterior sign is large gaps in exterior doors. Look at your garage door. Is it sitting as level as it used to? Also check the front and back door to see if they are square and they open and close smoothly. If they do not, you might have some issues.

One interior symptom that is pretty obvious is cracks in drywall. Look at your

ceiling and walls and note any cracks. Small cracks may be from minor settling, but large ones may be a bigger problem. Next, look at your fl oors. Are they no longer level? Also look at your cabinets and fi replace to see if they no longer sit fl ush. This indicates some kind of shifting with the walls. Lastly, examine your interior doors. Do they no longer close or open properly? If so you might need foundation work.

Any of these symptoms may be a sign that your foundation is degenerating. If you see any of these warning signs, don’t panic. Remember that these are just symptoms of foundation problems. Your problems may not require attention, but a professional should examine them. If you

do need foundation repair, hydraulically advanced

pilings are the number 1 recommended method by professional engineers. If you think you might have problems, call a professional today.

The reality is, a building foundation will likely need repair at some point because changes in soil conditions, hydrostatic pressure and a variety of other outside forces can create stress on a foundation. Luckily, there are experts who specialize in just this type of work. The expert should provide you with a detailed elevation survey with a topographical contour drawing, detailing differential foundation movement and a solution that is simple for you to understand. Foundation contractors are not licensed by the state and are typically self-trained or self-educated. It is imperative to research any contractor you are considering. The

one you choose should be professional and qualifi ed to do the best job possible. That contractor will be able to determine the cause of the problem and will have the tools and knowledge to fi nd a solution for your problem.

Foundation inspection and repair is a science of its own. Know your contractor.

How to tell when foundation repair is needed

Watering: 90% of 1. all foundation failure is caused by too much or the lack of water. To know how much water is enough, ask an expert.

Drainage: The proper 2. slope of soil away from the foundation is roughly 2 inches of drop for every 6 ft.

Drainage systems: 3. Never install a system without obtaining a soils report and/or checking with a professional that studies your concern and gives you an understandable and reasonable plan of action (proper drainage work is expensive if done right; avoid the cheap plan, it seldom works).

Knowledge is 4. everything: Ask questions until you are completely satisfi ed that you understand what is to be expected upon the completion of work.

Trees: The proper 5. distance from a structure is determined by the following equation: d/h= 2> (d= distance from structure, h= height of tree upon maturing) should d/h= <2 upon the tree maturing, foundation failure will occur.

Cool temperatures during the winter season usually means a home has been closed up. Spring is a great time to open up the home, spruce it up and get ready for the warmer months. Organizing this task, both practically and psychologically, can reduce the stress and frustration that is often associated with spring cleaning.

We complete thousands of cleanings each year, and have developed the following strategic method to help break down the huge chore of cleaning the entire house into realistic tasks and goals:

• Create a flexible yet comprehensive plan and put it on paper or your digital to-do list. Following a plan is easier to stick to as opposed to following a plan from memory. Decide when to clean and who is involved. Stick to it and build that time into your schedule.

• Don’t try to tackle the whole house at once; otherwise you’ll get frustrated and procrastinate. Instead, set a goal to thoroughly clean one or two rooms every couple of days.

• Start with putting things where they belong in the area you are set to clean. Doing this before you begin to clean will speed you up. You will waste time and become discouraged if you have to stop in the middle of what you’re doing just to put something away in another room. Clean that clutter!

• Gather all the cleaning supplies you will need for the designated area before you start and carry them with you from room to room as you go. This prevents unnecessary trips back and forth to your supply cabinet and makes the cleaning more efficient.

• Clean each room from top to bottom, moving around the room from left to right to ensure you don’t overlook door frames, door panels and window sills. Don’t forget the center of the room!

• Spring is great time to inspect and clean window treatments. Whether you need to wash blinds, send drapes and sheers to the dry cleaners or throw washable curtains into the washing machine, getting your window treatments clean after a long, dark winter will brighten an entire room.

• Dust first, and then vacuum! Crumbs, pet hair, etc. will fall to the floor as you’re cleaning. Instead of dusting and vacuuming bedrooms one at a time, first dust and then vacuum all the bedrooms. It saves time.

• Get your children involved. Little children love to sweep the floor and help put laundry away. We have free, printable chore charts online at www.mollymaid.com to help you get the kids involved.

• Finally a tip to help repel dust during the time of year the home will be open more: wipe down ceiling fan blades, window blinds, door panels and baseboards with dryer sheets. This will help repel dust and keep them cleaner for a longer period of time. Don’t forget to replace your air filters! Paper clip a dryer sheet to them, as well, to help the whole home smell fresher.

In this day and age, having a clean home is not always a top priority, with all the time demands put on us.

However, with these tips and tricks from Molly Maid of BCS professionals, taking on spring cleaning can be easier than ever. Good luck!

A strong credit history isn’t just nice to have – it’s a must-have in today’s world. Many consumers only think about their credit when applying for a loan or credit card. But lenders aren’t the only people who look at a person’s credit: landlords, cell phone companies and utility providers often do, too.

If you’re just starting out and haven’t established credit, or if you’re starting over again after your credit took a hit, these steps can help you establish and manage your credit.

If you are a Wells Fargo customer

Take advantage of two limited-time promotions running right now. Through April 15, 2013, Wells Fargo customers have access to a free, no-obligation Experian® custom VantageScore® and a complimentary credit report. All you need to do is visit a banking store and get a personal access code from a Wells Fargo banker.

Know what’s currently on your credit report

After taking advantage of the Free Credit Score promotion referenced above, remember to check your credit report regularly so you know the information contained in it is accurate. Report any errors to the credit bureau. By law, you can request a free credit report (credit score not included) once every 12 months from each of the consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax®, Experian® and TransUnion®. You can request all three reports free at annualcreditreport.com.

Understand how your credit is scored

Your credit score is calculated using various criteria like length of your credit history and the types of credit you have. But the two most important criteria are:

1. Payment track record – whether or not you pay your bills on time

2. What you owe – what your overall outstanding balances are, plus how much of your available credit you’re using

Apply for a credit card Retail and gas cards may

help you build your credit history. But your credit score is partly determined from the variety of different credit you have, so adding a major credit card—like a Visa® or MasterCard® could help improve it. If you can’t get an unsecured card yet, you might consider shopping for a secured card. Some things to consider when choosing a secured card:

• Are there application fees or an annual fee?

• Does the issuer provide an opportunity for the secured card to become an unsecured card after a period of making payments on time and meeting other eligibility criteria?

• Does the issuer report your payment history to major credit bureaus?

Consider an installment loan

As you establish your credit history, you may want to include installment loans to meet your occasional financing needs. This might start with auto loans or personal loans, but may eventually include a mortgage or home equity loan. If you limit the amount you borrow and keep the term of the loan short, you can strengthen your credit without paying a lot of interest.

If you can’t qualify for an unsecured loan, but you have some personal savings, consider a loan secured by your CD (certificate of deposit) or savings account.

Be patientYou want a credit history

that helps you get where you want to go in life. But remember, establishing and maintaining good credit is like losing weight—there’s no quick fix. It takes time, effort and guidance. For more credit tips, visit Wells Fargo’s Smarter CreditTM center at www.wellsfargo.com/smarter_credit/.

What is a podiatrist?A podiatrist, DPM, doctor

of podiatric medicine, is the only health care professional whose total training focuses on the foot and related body systems. As a specialist in foot care, the podiatrist receives extensive training in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot disorders by medical and surgical means.

After obtaining an undergraduate degree, the podiatric doctor spends four years in a College of Podiatric Medicine to obtain a doctorate degree. Many podiatrists further their education by participating in a postgraduate residency program at an approved hospital or university. Following their doctorate degree, each podiatrist must pass national and state examinations in order to be licensed by the state in which he or she will practice.

The podiatric physician cares for people of all ages, treating any foot problem. The common disorders include bunions, heel pain/spurs, hammertoes, neuromas, ingrown toenails, warts, corns and calluses. The podiatric physician also renders care of sprains, infections and injuries to the foot and heel.

If your podiatric surgeon is certifi ed by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery, he or she has successfully completed a credentialing and examination process and has demonstrated a knowledge of podiatric surgery, including the diagnosis of general foot diseases, deformities and trauma of the foot and related structures.

Pay careful attention to details

The foot is a complex structure made up of 26 bones, 33 joints, 107 ligaments and 19 muscles and tendons. All of them deserve the focused attention and care that a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) can provide. For feet of all ages, the members of APMA provide high quality health care.

Details are carefully attended to in meeting the requirements of the health care needs of your feet. Good foot health is vital to your overall health. Podiatrists provide the vast majority of foot health care services in the United States. The primary mission of the APMA is to improve the quality of foot care in the nation. This mission includes attracting qualifi ed young men and women to the fi eld and increasing the awareness of the importance of foot health among the general public and other health professionals. The APMA is located in Bethesda, Maryland, just outside Washington, DC, and the Association has component societies in every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the federal service. APMA represents its member podiatric physicians from across the country. The APMA also has more than 20 affi liated and related organizations. These organizations focus their attention on education, research, and specialty areas of interest, such as dermatology, pediatrics, radiology, and sports medicine, among others.

The Association’s Internet presence allows APMA to disseminate more foot health information to serve the public better.

Choosing A PodiatristOne of the most common

ways to choose a Podiatrist is to ask for recommendations from family and friends. Geographical location may be another means; it may be easier for you to see a Podiatrist close to your work rather than home, for example. When choosing a Podiatrist and making the fi rst appointment, consider the following points:

Communication: You must be able to feel comfortable about speaking freely and openly with your Podiatrist. Every piece of information you provide will help the Podiatrist to make a diagnosis. Things you talk about with your Podiatrist are confi dential.

Consultations: If you feel that your health concerns may take longer than the average appointment time, ask for a longer appointment when you book. This ensures consultations do not run

over-time and hold up other patients.

Be well-informed: It is important that you do not leave your consultation with unanswered questions. If you think you may not remember questions you want to ask or the answers the Podiatrist gives, take a pen and paper with you. You can note down important points you want to cover and get your Podiatrist to write the main points you need to remember.

Language & culture: If English is not your fi rst language and you would feel more comfortable with someone who speaks your fi rst language, contact the offi ce to see if they have a staff member you will be able to communicate with.

Latest Practices: Podiatric medicine and treatment is a constantly evolving fi eld. Choose a podiatrist who is up to date with new treatments and practices like laser treatment for toenail fungus. A Podiatrist who uses the latest techniques can often treat your condition with more effi ciency and less pain.

How to choose a podiatrist

Spends time 1. with their patients.

Answers each 2. patient’s questions and concerns.

Has a friendly 3. and helpful offi ce staff

Is a board 4. certifi ed specialist.

Uses the latest 5. techniques and treatments

Offi ce is 6. conveniently located.

Savings of 50 to 80 percent can be had at some of the area’s most popular stores and restaurants every day, but you have to act fast.

ShopBrazos Daily Deals offers up a new deal every day from a variety of local businesses. Restaurants, day spas, clothing stores, car care centers and more are using Daily Deals to give their customers the best bargains in town. All you have to do is sign up and keep an eye on your email.

Subscribers can fi nd the Daily Deal each morning in their email, on page A2 of The Eagle and via Twitter or Facebook. From there they go to shopbrazos.com/deals where they can buy their Daily Deal voucher. Present the voucher at the participating business to cash in on the deal. It’s important to read the deal carefully to make sure you use that voucher before the deal expires. In most cases, the vouchers expire six months after purchase.

“Daily Deals is very exciting for shoppers because you never know what the next deal is going to be,” said Jenny Downing, Internet sales director for The Eagle.

“We want people to be as excited checking their email in the morning as they are opening a present.”

Daily Deals also rewards its subscribers for spreading the word about the savings. When you fi nd an offer

you like, share it with your friends using our Facebook, Twitter or email links. Every time you refer a friend and they purchase a deal within 30 days, you get $10 worth of Deal Bucks applied to your account for a future

purchase. That means not only are you helping your friends fi nd great bargains, you’re helping yourself cash in on more deals in the future.

Most beauty salons offer a menu of spa and beauty services; however, knowing how to choose the right salon, spa and massage professionals can make a big difference.

Celebrity Spa & Salon offers the highest level of expertise to provide customized services for their guests. Their professionals are a valuable resource when it comes to creating a whole new you. Each guest is considered as an individual.

The perfect look starts with a great haircut. Celebrity Spa & Salon offers a complete range of salon services, and also the latest trends in pedicures, manicures and luxurious spa treatments essential for creating a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. Their new facility offers a tranquil place for full day spa packages, plus massages and customized facials performed by certified therapists. Celebrity also enforces sanitization and sterilizing of manicure and pedicure tools and tubs.

Choose a salon you have heard wonderful things about. Confirm it has certified professionals, and is recognized as “elite” by the supplier of the products it uses and provides for purchase. Tell the stylist what you are looking for in a product and get their recommendation for your specific needs. If you are looking for the full range of services (manicures, pedicures, highlights, perm, massage, makeup, facials, etc.) make sure your salon choice offers all of these services. Next, set up an appointment for a consultation before making your final decision.

Laura Atkinson is a member of the Celebrity team of highly trained stylists who have knowledge of all the latest trends.

“Fashion is always changing, and we change with it,” said Laura. “We must continue our education and training in the industry so we can offer the highest quality service.” Laura is a Redken Certified Colorist, and a certified Master Redken Specialist. “With each guest,

I start with a consultation. What is their personal style, and lifestyle, how do they typically style their hair, etc? Then we create a look that coincides with their hair type, face shape and skin tone. “

Your local salon and spa, along with the hairstylist you trust, are ready to wash out that gray, update your cut to something more contemporary and help you find a skin care and makeup regiment that you can live with, right down to treating yourself to a regular manicure and pedicure.

Getting a full-treatment facial can bring a new world of relaxation with many benefits. Choose the right facial for you, based on its purpose, type and price. A pre-facial consultation will allow the aesthetician to determine your skin type, as well as products and procedures to utilize. NuFace, a new non-invasive treatment, is offered at Celebrity Spa & Salon. NuFace offers a unique clinically proven technology that stimulates your facial muscles without any damage to your skin. Your aesthetician will offer instruction on how to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve facial contour and tone.

Regular massages - also known as body treatments - can leave you feeling fresher, more relaxed and ready to face the day. Choosing a massage therapist is like choosing a style of massage: it takes some experimentation to find what works best. The right therapist fits your needs and preferences, and provides a positive experience. It should be someone with a gift for massage, and an intuitive understanding of your body. You should feel the immense benefits of personalized care and progress with regular treatment.

The team of professionals at Celebrity Spa & Salon have a goal - “make every guest feel like a Celebrity from the moment they walk in the door.” Gift cards are a wonderful and easy way to give to that someone special, so they can use it for any desired Celebrity treatment.
