Of course, you don’t want to sink a load of cash into a place you aren’t going to stay in, but focusing on a few influential fixes can drastically improve the home’s overall appearance - and your chances of selling.

Freshen up Potential buyers often look for obvious signs of neglect, such as leaky roofs, water damage or crumbling founda-tions. But even without these problems, making your home look like new again can be as simple as applying a fresh coat of paint on the walls. Cooking, smoking and everyday living can discolor and fade your ceilings and walls, making your home seem old and unattractive. (ARA) - With warmer weather set-ting in across the country, now is the perfect time to enjoy a road trip. While millions of Americans are hitting the pavement in hopes of a travel adventure, many do so without realizing that the effects of winter are still taking a toll on their vehicles.

Here are a few tips to make sure drivers are prepared for a success-ful road travel season.

* Watch For Inflation:As temperatures change, so can tire pressure. Proper tire inflation is essential for automotive safety, optimum driving performance and significant cost savings, including better fuel mileage. Tires should be inflated to the vehicle manufac-turer recommendations printed on the vehicle door placard or in the glove box and should be checked monthly. Over-inflation can lead to premature or irregular tire wear and under-inflation reduces a ve-hicle’s fuel efficiency by an average of 3.3 percent.

* Breathe Free:Replacing a dirty air filter can in-crease a vehicle’s life expectancy and fuel efficiency by reducing the strain on the engine, espe-cially during warmer months. Over the winter months, salt, sand and other impurities may have built up in the vehicle’s air filtration system and replacing the air filter can im-prove acceleration time by 6 to 11 percent.

As should be expected, there are many plans on how to build a fence. Post and rail fences aren’t constructed in exactly the same way as a wood privacy fence or an aluminum security fence. The number of possible fence building plans is as numer-ous as the kinds of available fencing. Still, all fence building the same general princi-ples of good fence building. Knowing what the principles of how to build a fence are will set you off on the right foot for your fencing project.

The Basic of How to Build a FenceFirst, you’ll need to deal with some prelimi-nary surveillance and paperwork. Know where your property line is. you don’t want to take the time and money to build a fence, only to discover your neighbor has the right to tear it down. you might try talk-ing to your neighbor to see if they’re inter-ested in having a fence. This will enable you to build the fence directly on the property line, and your neighbor may be willing to chip in some money for the project. you’ll also need to check on whether your fenc-ing project requires any building permits before you begin.

The most important part of quality fence building is the part you can’t see: the depth and construction of the fence posts. Not

only must fence posts support the weight of the fence, they must also act as an anchor for your fence against strong winds. They must also be dug deep enough to withstand crum-bling or shifting soil in your yard. A good rule of thumb is to dig

your fence posts deep enough so that one-third the length of the fence post is under-ground. If you’re uncertain or know that your home receives high winds and/or soft soil, err on the side of digging your fence posts a little deeper than necessary.

Privacy Fence PanelingIf you’re building some sort of privacy fence, you may need to take some extra steps to properly attach your fence panels. DIy fencing kits can be tailored for your lawn. To deal with a sloped lawn, fence panels can be “racked”. Essentially, this means the panel has been contorted from a rectangle into a parallelogram to accommodate the slope. you’ll need to measure the length and angle of your lawn slope to ensure you get an adequately racked panel section.

Try Your Local Fence BuilderOnce you have a grasp of the basics of how to build a fence, you should try to find a lo-cal expert that can supplement your knowl-edge. you might try your local hardware store, but don’t expect a teenager stock-ing shelves to know much, in anything, more than you do. Some local contractors may be willing to talk to you for free on the phone about your fencing project, but again, you have to get lucky to find a pro-

f e s s i o n a l willing to donate his or her time to your fenc-ing project. If you do find such a contractor, you might want to keep his or her number for future projects. you’ve probably found an honest, quality contractor if he or she is willing to offer such advice.

Hearing aid technology has improved and evolved greatly over the years. Not only has the size of the hearing aids decreased, but the technology inside hearing aids has greatly improved. Today’s hearing aids are available in ex-tended wear invisible designs to a very discreet and tiny behind-the-ear size that can have a great amount of power. With many hearing aid companies promising to solve your hearing problems, how do you choose what is right for you? I would suggest following these steps:

1. Seek a referral to a reputable audiologist. If you don’t know one, ask your doctor for a referral. A good audiologist will check your ears for wax, review your history of hearing difficulties and any medical problems that may con-tribute, complete a diagnostic hearing test tot determine degree and type of hearing loss, and make a medical referral if the testing determines the hear-ing loss could have a correctable cause. Be cautious of free hearing tests and people who only sell one brand of hearing aid. Nothing is completely free.

2. Ask about a trial period. Hearing aids take some time to get adapted to and adjusted to. The trial period allows time to determine if the hearing aids are going to be helpful and comfortable for you. This period allows you to make any necessary changes to style or to make any necessary changes to style or technology before making a commitment.

3. Thing about future needs. If hearing were to change do the hearing aids have sufficient residual gain (extra power) to be programmed to accommo-date this change?

Professional fees remote controls and other hearing aid options may cost extra. Talk to your audiologist about your needs and expectations. If cost is an issue, good instruments are still available at reason-able prices. If you’re a veteran, you may be able to get your hearing aid at no cost. Most health insurance plans, including Medicare do not cover the cost of hearing aids.

7. Ask about follow-up. Is someone at the clinic available for problems regu-larly? Does the provider travel in once a week or so to see patients. A lot of adjusting may need to be done to the hearing aids to maximize your com-fort and clarity. If you bought the aids when a factory representative was in town for an event, is the provider going to be able to complete the necessary follow-up?

Despite the warm temperatures and sunny skies, many students are feeling a shadow looming as back to school season creeps closer. After weeks of lazy, summer days, late nights, varying rou-tines and minimal mental stimulation, the return to school can seem overwhelming to students of all ages. To help parents and children get ready for the new school year, Dr. Richard E. Bavaria, Ph.D. and senior vice president for Sylvan learning, offers several tips to ease the transition from the beach to the classroom and jumpstart sluggish summer brains. STUDENTS: For many students, the first day of school doesn’t only bring new teachers and new friends - it can also be a source of anxiety with homework as-signments and tests just around the corner. Start-ing the school year off on the right foot can help minimize students’ stress levels throughout the year. Get Cleaning. A dirty, cluttered room is not con-ducive to studying. Carve Out a Homework Spot. Get Organized. Set Educational Goals. Whether it is striving for an A in a certain subject, handing in all homework on time or preparing for tests well in advance, setting goals can help establish a routine for the new year.

Set goals that are measurable, specific, reason-able and have personal value. Stay On Schedule. Minimize last minute cramming or deadline mix-ups by creating a detailed school schedule. • Includeallclasses,assignmentsandkey dates, such as project deadlines and test dates. Fill in new dates as they arise. • Schedulespecifictimesforstudying, projects and extracurricular activities. The more thorough the schedule, the more helpful it will be to you.

Know The School. If you ever feel swamped with back to school madness, ask for help. Schools as-sist students with transitioning from one grade to another. Meet with your guidance counselor and/or teachers. If you are still nervous, ask your mom or dad to drop you off at school on the first day of class. Be Adventurous. Step out of your comfort zone this school year by trying new things academi-cally and in terms of extracurricular activities. • Tryeverytypeofclassand/oractivity.You never know what your strengths are until you experience as much as you can.• Challengeyourself.Ifyouhavethe opportunity, take the hardest classes - not the easiest subjects. • Askquestions.Thereisnothingwrong with not always knowing the answer. Asking questions is the best way to learn!

It also means reconnecting with old friends, meeting new people, resuming fun extracurricular activities, learning more about your favorite subjects and improving on your last year’s performance. PARENTS: While the idea of waking up at the crack of dawn to prepare lunches, fighting over appropriate school attire and regulating the amount of tele-vision watched might have you frazzled, take solace in the fact that you can play a big part in getting your children motivated and excited to tackle a new school year. Depending on your child’s age, your role in the above-mentioned tips will vary. The following are helpful ideas to ease kids of all ages back into learning mode: Help Your Child Discover His/Her Learning Style. Be-cause each child is special, with different learning styles and academic needs, it is important to per-

sonalize the learning pro-cess. People learn in at least eight different ways, according to the Multiple In-telligences Theory: visually, verbally, physi-cally, mathematically, mu-sically, naturalistically, through group activity or through quiet thinking time. Talk to your child’s teachers about your child’s learn-ing strengths and how best to support them. Get Back In the Routine. Ease the transition from lazy summer days to the structure of the school year by re-establishing bedtime, mealtime, read-ing and homework routines. Talk with your child about the importance of structure and how rou-tines help ensure that he is not overtired or overly anxious about schoolwork. Develop A Family Event Calendar. One of the most helpful tools for getting organized is a family event calendar. To ease the chaos, track school programs, volunteer work and after-school ac-tivities. Family time management is essential if you are going to avoid the tumultuous frenzy of disorganization. • Dependingonyourchildren’sages,this calendar can be on construction paper with large squares to write in all necessary information, or it can be produced on a white board so that it is easy to revise.• Ifitiscolor-codedbyfamilymember,you can clearly see who has an activity scheduled and when the event occurs.• Placethecalendarnearthetelephone,so when a friend’s mother calls to invite your child to a birthday party, you will know instantly whether it fits within your family plans.

Purchase School Supplies In Advance. Avoid the last-minute rush by purchasing supplies at least one week in advance. Take your child. She can feel excited and in control by choosing her favor-ite colors and designs. Be a Cheerleader. Encourage your child to share any concerns he has about returning to school. Reinforce positive feelings by talking with your child about learning and achievement. Support his academic interests and encourage him to get involved in extracurricular activities at school.

The Dangers of Secondhand Smoke in Living EnvironmentsSecondhand smoke - the smoke that comes from a lighted tobacco product or from a person who is smoking tobacco - contains more than 4,000 chemicals. Of these chemicals, 11 are known cancer-causing poisons and 250 are know tox-ins. the 2006 u.S. Surgeon General’s Report, The Health Consequences of Involuntary Exposure to Tobacco Smoke (available online at http://www.sur-geongeneral.gov/library/s e co n d h a n d s m o k e / ) , concluded that there is no risk-free level of sec-ondhand smoke, and the only way to protect people from the dangers of secondhand smoke is to eliminate the smoke exposure.

The u.S. Centers for Dis-ease Control (CDC) and the u.S. Surgeon General have created a guide, ti-tled Secondhand Smoke: What it Means to you (http://www.surgeon-general.gov/library/sec-ondhandsmoke/second-handsmoke.pdf), that summarizes the 2006 Surgeon General’s Report and explains how people can take action to im-prove their health. the CDC and Surgeon General have also created a factsheet, titled Secondhand Smoke is Toxic and Poisonous (http://www.sur-geongeneral.gov/library/secondhandsmoke/factsheets/factsheet9.html), outlining the dan-gerous chemical components in secondhand smoke.

A minimum of 38,000 and up to 65,000 deaths occur each year in the u.S. as a result of diseases caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. Thou-sands of other people in the u.S. suffer from con-ditions caused by or made worse by secondhand smoke.

As many as 175 Montanans die annually from ex-posure to secondhand tobacco smoke.

With the passage of Montana’s Clean Indoor Act in 2005 and full implementation in October of

2009 all workplaces and public places are now required to be smokefree.

People of all ages and backgrounds can be af-fected by secondhand smoke. But vulnerable populations, such as senior citizens and children, are at increased risk from health problems such as heart attack in seniors and slow lung growth in children. The u.S. Centers for Disease Control recommends anyone with heart-related diseases

avoid any exposure to sec-ondhand smoke.

Why are Smokefree Living Environ-ments so Impor-tant?Secondhand smoke knows no boundaries. While 85% of Montana households control their exposure by not permit-ting smoking inside the home, residents in multi-unit housing cannot control their exposure to secondhand tobacco smoke if their neighbors are smoking. Smokefree policies ensure that resi-dents in multi-unit hous-ing households are not exposed.

According to the 2008 Montana Adult Tobacco Survey:Approximately 18% of Montanans rent their home.

Among renters, an estimated 48,000 live in an apartment or duplex and over one-third (36%) of respondents living in multi-unit housing also had children 17 years or younger living with them. less than 20% of Montanans living in multi-unit housing are protected by a smokefree policy set by their landlord.

Of Montana multi-unit renters who do not have a smokefree policy in their building or complex, the majority (85%) were in favor of their landlords adopting a smokefree policy.

low-income Montanans with rent-assisted hous-ing are at particular risk since their housing op-

tions may be limited.

V e n t i l a t i o n and air purifi-ers cannot end the harm caused by exposure to secondhand smoke. The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers has commented on the need to eliminate smoking rather than try to ventilate it stating that “the only means of ef-fectively eliminating health risk associated with indoor exposure is to ban smoking activity.”

Exposure to secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing complexes poses a public health prob-lem because the smoke from one unit can enter other units. The only way to eliminate this expo-sure to secondhand smoke in multi-unit housing complexes is to have a comprehensive smokefree policy.
