How to Easily Set Up Open Graph and Make AllYour Posts on Facebook Look Outstanding

Facebook Open Graph protocol allows you to share your blog content not only with your

readers, but their Facebook friends as well, in the way you want it to be seen. Done the right

way, using Open Graph builds up your brand and increases tra�c to your site.

It’s important that when your readers

share your blog post on Facebook by

clicking on a share button on your blog,

the post looks polished and appealing to

other Facebvook users. That means that

the blog image, the headline below that

image and the short description should

all be automatically pulled in when your

blog URL is shared on Facebook. Open

Graph makes that happen seamlessly. It

also allows your blog to be accessed

from a click to any part of the

post—headline, image or caption below.

1. Everyone seems to agree that the easiest way to incorporate Open Graph is by using the free

Yoast SEO plug-in. To get this, go to your WordPress dashboard and on the left sidebar, find

Plugins. Choose “Add New.”

2. This will take you to a WordPress page for storing and adding new Plug-Ins. Type “Yoast

Wordpress SEO” in the search box and it will come up in the first few entries.

3. Click “Install Now”.

Next, go to your Installed Plugins

page.

5. This will bring up the Open Graph setup page.

4. Scroll down until you find “Wordpress SEO” and click

“Activate”. Once you’ve activated it, you can set up

Open Graph by finding SEO on the left sidebar,

highlighting it and clicking on “Social”.

6. First, directly under the Facebook tab, check the box next to “Add Open Graph meta data.”

7. Next, click the button that reads “Add Facebook Admin.” (Make sure you are logged into your

Facebook account first.) It will automatically pull your name, and will take you to your Facebook

page to confirm that you have access to it. You can also choose to use a Facebook app as an admin.

8. Next, copy the URL of your Facebook page and paste into the box where it’s required. (It will look

something like http://facebook.com/iamamyporterfield).

This allows Open Graph to pull insights directly from your Facebook page.

9. The next two boxes are where you’ll select the image and title you want to show up when

people link to your website’s front page (for example, http://amyporterfield.com).

You can choose any image you want—a custom-made one for your website, or an image that

already exists in your WordPress media library. Just make sure that a) the dimensions are 560 x 292

px and b) all of your text has a 40-pixel bu�er on either side and a 10-pixel bu�er on the bottom.

This way, your image won't get stretched or cropped when it's shared on di�erent platforms.

10. Click “Upload image,” select the image you want, and click “Use Image” in the bottom right corner.

Don’t forget to hit “Save Changes” at the bottom of the page when you’re done.

11. Finally, choose a default image—one that will show up when someone links to a page or

category on your site that doesn’t have a specified featured image. Scroll down to “Default

Settings” and upload your default image the same way you uploaded the front page image.
