Growth Mindset
Abilities are like muscles, they can be built up
with practice.
• With concerted effort, you can make yourself significantly better or
improve your skills
• You may not be as skilled as others in certain areas, but you can
make big gains to catch up or surpass others in these areas
• Benefit: Falling down or coming up short is viewed as learning, not
failing

Fixed Mindset
Abilities are static (won’t change much one way or the
other)
• You may get a little better or worse at those skills, but basically your
abilities reflect the way that you’re wired
• Your behavior is a good representation of your natural ability
• Benefit: People develop great confidence in what they do well

Growth Mindset Benefits
Carole Dweck’s research: Benefits of adopting a growth
mindset include:
• The most effective teams and individuals develop a “learning frame,”
responding to lack of success as part of the learning process, not a
fatal personal flaw
• People demonstrate a greater willingness to stretch outside of comfort
zones
• Increases risk taking
• Increases acceptance of feedback as an important tool for improving
• Encourages taking a long-term view
HOW TO ASSESS & DEVELOP YOUR PERSONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT PLAN
Growth Mindset: Career Applications
1) Encourages exploration
2) Encourages experimentation
3) The “learning lense” encourages risk taking and moving
beyond one’s comfort zone
4) Supports a belief that you can build and acquire skills with
effort and discipline
5) Views positive and constructive feedback as helpful
information for career planning and professional
development
