DESCRIPTION

London is always full of holidaymakers, and it is easy to separate them from the city’s true denizens despite its cosmopolitan environment. Tourists will always be tourists—fanny packs, loud curiosity and sometimes politically incorrect remarks. Blending in is a wise way to avoid becoming a laughingstock or a ridiculous spectacle. It will also help tourists keep themselves from attracting thieves and offenders who prey on newcomers. More importantly, it gives guests a chance to take a closer and more intimate look at what the British culture has to offer.

How Not To Look Like a Tourist in London

London is always full of holidaymakers, and it is easy to separate them from the city’s true denizens despite its cosmopolitan environment. Tourists will always be tourists—fanny packs, loud curiosity and sometimes politically incorrect remarks. Blending in is a wise way to avoid becoming a laughingstock or a ridiculous spectacle. It will also help tourists keep themselves from attracting thieves and offenders who prey on newcomers. More importantly, it gives guests a chance to take a closer and more intimate look at what the British culture has to offer. Those visiting London for the first time must keep the following things in mind if they wish to blend in:

Go for a Smaller Camera Nothing identifies a tourist better than a showy camera with big lenses. Tourists should learn the art of minimalism when it comes to documenting their sojourn; they should bring a smaller camera. A point-and-shoot device will simply do, and it will not attract other people. One may also use a camera phone.

Go for a Smaller Map A big map is another tourist identifier. Holidaymakers should go for a more discreet map that they can easily fit into their bags or pockets. They can also use their GPS-enabled smartphones for easier navigation.

Keep that Voice Low British people are generally reserved and won’t bother speaking to someone they have just met on the Tube. Tourists should learn how to restrain themselves from striking up a conversation with people they don’t know. More importantly, they should refrain from talking out loud, as it’s not in the nature of the British people.

Forget the Hotel Tourists wanting to explore the city may choose to abandon the idea of staying at a hotel, as it may make them too comfortable; thus, keeping them from experiencing the real London. They may stay at hostels and smaller accommodations that are closer to places frequented by Londoners. Travelling to London can give someone a unique experience. This experience is going to be more memorable if everything in the city is seen through the same lens as a true Londoner.
