KLK OLEO recognises the importance of setting a good example when it comes to sustainable development. The company strives to be a pioneer of change in the oleo-chemical indus-try pursuing international standards of recognition in their national and global efforts for sustainability.

As part of the publicly listed reputa-ble international group Kuala Lumpur Kepong Berhad (KLK), KLK OLEO meets all criteria of the RSPO Sup-ply Chain Certification (SCC) systems and offers two supply chain models under the RSPO guidelines: the Mass Balance Model and the Segregation Model depending on the capability of the individual production site.

The basis of the supply chain requirements for the Mass Bal-ance Model consists of reconciliation between the quantity of RSPO mate-rial bought, and the quantity of RSPO certified products delivered.

RSPOThe Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is a non-profit organisation that aims to trans-form markets to make sustain-able palm oil the norm. The or-ganisation unites stakeholders from the palm oil industry to develop and implement global standards for sustainable palm oil. It has over 2000 members globally representing 40% of the palm oil industry and cov-ering all sectors of the global commodity supply chain.

The global demand for palm oil is increasing and accounts for a large share of the world’s production of oils and fats. Given the great demand and the fact that millions of peo-ple are dependent on the raw material, there has been an ur-gent global call for sustainably produced palm oil.

The Segregation ModelThis model assures that all of the physical products originate from RSPO-certified oil only. This approach requires that the RSPO-certified palm oil is kept separate from materials of non-RSPO origin at every stage of the production, processing, refining and manufacturing throughout the sup-ply chain. This model, however, does allow the mixing of SG RSPO-certified

Consumer awareness about palm oil is significant and growing, both for food and non-food products. The industry has to source sustainably in order to retain customer loyalty in the sector where brand is the main equity.

An updated version of the RSPO Sup-ply Chain Certification standard has been released last November. For traders and distributors it is no long-er mandatory to certify their supply chain. They require a licence from RSPO to sell RSPO certified products.

When selling RSPO certified products the certification number of the productmanufacturer must be passed on and the applicable supply chain model (e.g. Mass Balance or Segregation). This is an important step in trans-forming markets to make sustainable palm oil the norm and making it avail-able to all, not only the big players.

KOLB offers the choice to buy palm (kernel) oil derivatives with RSPO cer-tification. Alsiano has applied for this distributors’ licence and can start sell-ing KOLB’s products with RSPO cer-tificate.

palm oil and its derivatives from vari-ous SG RSPO sources.

• Fair share of complexity and impact on cost depending on product group

• Physical segregation is costly along the supply chain

• Physical segregation makes the segregation model very complex

Stepan Mild® L3, naturally derived surfactantThe newly launched Stepan Mild® L3 is a naturally-derived, multifunctional nonionic surfactant and emollient, suitable for either rinse-off or leave-on products

By Stepan

STEPAN-MILD® L3 (Lauryl Lactyl Lac-tate) is a viscosity builder, foam boost-er, emulsifier and emollient that can be used in shampoo, body wash, liq-uid soap, bubble bath, facial cleanser and cream/lotion formulations.

Used as an additive in formulations, Stepan-Mild® L3 shows enhanced mildness, gives a creamy and luxuri-ous touch to the foam and provides skin softness. In hair care products, it can also be used as a substitute or boosting agent of silicones for easier detangling and sleekness. Lastly, it helps solubilising active ingredients (e.g. salicylic acid…).

Stepan-Mild® L3 is therefore the pleas-ure enhancer for cosmetic formula-tions, for a richer sensorial experience.

Application2-in-1 shampoo, bar soap, body wash, facial cleansers, liquid hand soap, shampoos, skin feel enhan-cers, special secondary surfactants, sulfate-free, thickeners.

Foam texture and skin after-feelHand wash: with just 1% addition of Stepan Mild L3 in a SLES/CAPB system, the obtained foam is denser and deliciously creamy. After use, the skin is left soft and supple.

Emollient attributesStepan Mild L3 is a surfactant with emol-lient properties. Its use in hygiene formu-lations is therefore easier than most other emollients, while offering a similar touch.

Improved eye toleranceStepan Mild L3 reduces the eye irritation, for high mildness formulations.

An extra hand on viscosity buildingStepan Mild L3 brings immediate slight viscosity. It helps achieve higher viscosities with less salt. Higher efficacy, reduced irritancy.

Haircare - a natural alternative to silicones In 2-in-1 shampoos Stepan Mild L3 gives at least the same performances as a sili-cone emulsion.

•Sensory benefits for an enriched experience

•100% active, naturally

From 14-16 April, the In-cosmetics show was held in Barcelona with more than 600 suppliers showing their latest innovations within ingre-dients, raw materials, products and technologies to approx 13,000 buy-ers, influencers, scientists and R&D professionals. Natural, green and sustainable were among the big buzz words at this year’s event and char-acterised many of the ingredients presented at the show. Here is a brief summary of what our suppliers pre-sented at InCosmetics 2015:

BK Giulini GmbHBK Giulini, one of the leading produc-ers of antiperspirant actives offered standard and high effective solutions and powder grades of Aluminium Chlorohydrate - ALOXICOLL® - and Aluminium Zirconium Complexes - ZIRKONAL®. Also at the stand, Gilugel®, the superior rheological

additive for modern W/O emulsions and Gilumasc®, a high quality thermo modellage, was presented.

KLK OLEO & KOLBKLK OLEO and KOLB showcased their synergetic product portfolio of sustainable palm oil derivatives with RSPO certificate – read more about KLK OLEO’s two supply chain models on page 1-2. KLK OLEO’s product portfolio ranges from basic fatty ac-ids & glycerine, fatty alcohols & fatty esters, to sulphonated methyl esters and surfactants. In the specialty seg-ment, KLK OLEO also manufactures nutraceutical and cosmeceuticals ran-ge of vitamin E. KOLB has more than 50 years’ experience in design and production of nonionic surfactants.

Stepan EuropeFormulating green and consumer-friendly personal care products is one

of the greatest challenges facing to-day's formulators. The sulfate-free trend is one example as well as the quest for responsibly sourced ingre-dients. At their stand, Stepan pre-sented primary anionics as well as a variety of non-ionic, cationic and amphoteric surfactants designed to meet these requirements – among them Stepan Mild L3 which you can read more about on page 3.
