House of Illustration is the UK’s only public gallery and education space dedicated solely to illustration and graphic arts. Our dynamic programme of exhibitions brings together works from public and little-seen private collections from across the world. We explore illustration in all its forms from advertising to animation, picture books to political cartoons and fashion illustration to architecture. We are currently seeking touring partners for a series of exciting new exhibitions for the period 2019 to 2023. Our exhibitions are available at a range of sizes and price points, and include mounted and framed original artwork or reproductions, interpretive exhibition graphics, marketing resources and support from our curatorial team. If you are interested in finding out more about our available exhibitions, please contact: Katie Nairne, Touring Manager [email protected] 020 3696 2027

Posy Simmonds’ sharp satire and progressive female characters have defined a career spanning 50 years. This exhibition will feature 150 original works including her early-career pastiches, iconic cartoon strips for The Guardian, and children’s books such as Fred, which became an Oscar-nominated film. It will also include work from the first ever British graphic novel, True Love, unseen pages from Tamara Drewe and drawings from Simmonds’ 2018 book, Cassandra Darke. Posy Simmonds: A Retrospective will be the UK’s largest exhibition to examine the artist’s prolific output and will be co-curated by Paul Gravett, the UK’s foremost expert on comics and graphic novels.

Illustrations such as political cartoons, infographics and provocative artwork have been instrumental in how we have perceived the refugee crisis – informing us of statistics or events, changing or confirming our political views, and provoking anger or sadness. Journeys Drawn: Illustration from the Refugee Crisis explores ways in which illustration has engaged with the human stories behind the headlines, through reportage illustration, graphic novels and animations. The exhibition features multi-media work by 12 contemporary illustrators, including Olivier Kugler’s portraits from Calais, George Butler’s reportage from Syria and animation by Majid Adin.

Illustrator YiMiao Shih satirises current affairs using drawing and embroidery. Her latest work is a response to the social and political upheaval caused by Britain’s exit from the European Union. As part of a 6-month residency with House of Illustration, she has used observations from mainstream news coverage and social media debate to create a fictional parallel universe in which, rather than voting to leave the EU, the British public votes for ‘Rabbrexit’: the expulsion of rabbits from the country.

The partnership of writer Roald Dahl (1916-1990) and illustrator Quentin Blake (b.1932) is one of the most significant in modern children’s literature. Blake’s vital illustrations for 24 of Dahl’s texts seem almost inevitable; the two have become inseparable in the public imagination. Blake himself has selected 35 pieces from his archive to illuminate his experience of working on the book. These have been made into high quality reproductions which have been framed to match the original exhibition at House of Illustration.

In this new touring exhibition from House of Illustration, Blake shares 30 of his favourite covers from three celebrated publishers – a selection of his distinctive covers for Penguin paperbacks, his work for premium hardbacks for The Folio Society, and his illustrated covers for children’s books published by Jonathan Cape. House of Illustration is delighted to be able to offer this exhibition to a wide range of venues – including spaces that do not meet accredited museum standards such as libraries, town halls and schools.
