TREASURER’S REPORT: Hugh circulated a description of
the Income ($2050). Expenditure ($6910), and Bank Balance
($12,855) for February, therefore the 40th Birthday Weekend cost
the club ($3,636).

EDITOR’S REPORT: $1.10 postage stamp caters for an 8 page
Coota Hoota. More than 8 pages the stamp required is $2.20.
March edition was 12 pages. By using thin paper - $1.10 stamp
was O.K.
SHOWGROUND USERS: New buildings have been added to
the Showground. They could be useful to us during our Swap Meet.
SWAP MEET REPORT: Flyers have already been handed out
at Gundagai Swap ( 29 Feb.) and Darryl Philpott added some flyers
to the counter of a Chrome Platers.
PLATES REGISTRAR’S REPORT: Club Plates so far this year have gone onto a V12 Jaguar (XJS) and next onto an Alfa Romeo racer. And Alan mentioned that a past Sporting Car Club member and TAFE auto TEACHER – George Orr has passed away.

to the back page of the Club’s newsletter for plenty of Events to go to. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT: John Rickett has sent a letter
of condolence to Robert Cram on the passing of his sister, Maureen.
GENERAL BUSINESS
Chairman called for a vote on the membership application of Andrew Wight who has a 1968 Mercedes hearse and a 1976 Chrysler Regal. Accepted unanimously.
Chairman called for volunteers to attend the A.G.M. of the C.H.M.C. – Ken Harrison and Malcolm Chaplin.
Chairman called for those going to the SW GET-TOGETHER. – At least 13 hands were raised. Chairman requested volunteers at the SW GET-TOGETHER at the Airport - to set up marquees, order portaloos, supply
generator, banner, marshals, tables, sell Club Calendars and bottles of water - Friday and Saturday – and especially to pack up after lunch on Saturday. (So he can set off for Albury!) Chairman Malcolm has spent the $400 Shannnons sponsorship on 6 prizes for this event - each valued at greater than $60 – 6 x Meguiar’s Ultimate Shine Collectors’ Kit Gift Bucket.
Ken Harrison suggested our club organise a Club’s Events Films Night . We need to learn how to use the video equipment which is in the Cootamundra Meeting room. Then it would be a Good Idea. Graeme Ducksbury reported that it could be a good Idea to get a security check when buying a vehicle to restore. It could be a stolen vehicle. REVS checks are only $2 or so. John Simpfendorfer reported that more backing plates for number plates on club motor bikes are needed. He was instructed to order 10 more from Coota Signs. George Bland asked how many are going to the Harden Truck Show? At least a dozen hands raised. Chairman invited members around the Meeting room to reveal what their club activities are. And by 9.10 p.m. Malcolm determined it was time to close the Meeting.

PRESIDENT’S RAMBLE
In January’s issue, how could I have got the spelling of ‘FODEN’ so terribly wrong. I think I spelt it
‘SENTINEL’ - so, sorry about that.
It has been busy as usual, with many interesting activities for our club to be involved in. I have just
returned from the Harden Truck and Tractor show, (15TH
February) and organisers of that were
very pleased with the number of entries of trucks, tractors, cars and stationary engines and with the
number of spectators. Our club was well represented with cars entered and also some trucks and Tim’s
Leyland bus. Congratulations to Kevin Sharp giving the commentary during the parade and to all the
organising team.
Prior to that, last weekend, club members attended the ‘Car Muster’ in Young at PCYC, where again
an interesting array of vehicles was on display with pleasant socialising over morning tea
There has also been the Gundagai Show and the Military Vehicle Gathering week at Corowa.
Hopefully members attending these events will submit a report for our magazine.
In the company of Ballards, McCarthys, O’Keeffes and Tretheweys, Lin and I attended the Wodonga
club’s annual Kalimna rally, held this year at Myrtleford. During the weekend we visited Precision
Airmotive, in Wangaratta, who are operating in the old Drage’s Airworld hangar. They rebuild to very
exacting standards the Curtiss P40 Kittyhawk aircraft, fighter planes of WW2 vintage. The metal
folding / cutting and other specialised equipment to assist the restorations, is amazing.
In Beechworth another interesting visit was to the old Billson’s Brewery, established in 1865, brewing
beer and also many varieties of cordials ; the second oldest brewery in Australia. Billsons is newly
owned and operated by a young couple who have made a large financial investment to match their
passion for continuing the preservation of history. In addition to the alcoholic beverages they have
restored the manufacture of the original cordials . In all the production they use water from an old
bricked well, first dug on the site by Chinese miners, providing access to clear, sweet spring water at
the rate of thousands of litres per hour, without reducing the level.
They also house a collection of 25 local historic horse drawn carriages, dating back to the 19th
century.
It was pleasing to see the numbers of members attending our Harden meeting, including new
members inducted, and several visitors. In fact it is encouraging to see the numbers of members
attending all our club meetings and activities.
On this subject, of course we must all play our part in the prevention of the spread of Covid-19, but
hopefully, whilst observing all the requirements, our club members can still continue to meet and also
take part in as many activities to enjoy motoring and socialising, as is possible, in the coming months.
Our club event scheduled for Sunday 28th March, the South West Get Together, at the Airport has had
to be postponed. This venue was to include the Vintage Sports Car Club of Australia holding their
sprints on the runway. They advised us that they have made the decision to cancel also.
We plan to run the South West Get Together later in the year.

P.S. While we were lunching at Billson’s , a local with an old Chev 4, late 20’s, invited us to come on
a tour of Beechworth. He provided a very informative route through the streets, describing history
happenings. Once on the move, the old Chev rarely needed anything but top gear, even ascending the
steep dirt track up through the Beechworth Gorge. Coming down, whilst attempting to apply the
brakes, he described that they can’t ever stop the vehicle, they just slow it down.

PAST EVENT
The 2020 Gundagai Swap, Tractor Pull, Truck and Car Show was in great weather and I was
having a good time till I caught this suspicious looking fella cuddling my wife
All's good. It was only Ray Douglas; and we caught up and had a
chat
Also met up with Gary & Denise Webb.
The stalls were down a bit from last year, but still enough to buy
that odd bit you were looking for.
Lynn and Kaitlyn managed to pick up 17 sites for our Fathers Day
Swap Meet which was a top effort
I didn't buy anything, not even an ice cream but the cars on show
were a bonus and my pick of the day was a very neat 186S HR
Holden, but then again I am a bit bias.

Sunday 15 March -- TRUCK & TRACTOR SHOW
at Harden Murrumburrah Showground More than a hundred trucks, nearly a hundred cars, and nearly a hundred stationary machines made
up a mighty Display, topped up by plenty of interesting stalls. What a Show!

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR From Fiona Love:
We were invited to Cootamundra’s 40th
Birthday Weekend. Ron and Carol in a Mercedes, Gordon in an EK, Gary in a
Morris Oxford, Owen and I in a Mercedes set off on Friday morning from The Illawarra (Albion Park) for the drive
down, and enjoyed morning tea and lunch along the way. Unfortunately the temperature was in the high 30s which
made for an uncomfortable trip.
Meet & Greet was at the Cootamundra Airport and welcome glasses of cold water. Later that evening we all went out
with Mum & Dad (Ken & Betsy Harrison) for dinner at the Rusty Table housed in the old Nurses Quarters at the rear of
the disused Hospital. We had our own private dining room which was fantastic as there was much chatter about cars, and
old times, etc.
Saturday 1 Feb.
After a very restless night due to the temperature never dropping below 36 degrees all night, ( I think we should change the
name of Cootamundra to Hades!!) we all met up at Albert Park; and departed in two groups visiting different venues and
then swapping over in the afternoon and we were all provided with Cootamundra Club bottles of ice cold water.
Everyone met again for lunch at the home of CAMC members, Graeme and Robyn Snape. Their home used to be a panel
beating workshop – where we had lunch – surrounded by a stable of wonderful old cars. And what a spread! A ladies’
church group had made lovely sandwiches and there was fruit and many beautiful slices and cakes.
After lunch we were provided with more ice cold bottles of water. Ron and Carol and Gordon decided that due to the
extreme heat they would rest in their hotel. Gary joined the group who went to see the motoring treasures at Stockinbingal
while Owen and I and Betsy and Ken went to see another collection -- of English cars and one Model T Ford. Hosts, Paul
and Judy had arranged ice water and afternoon tea and had many fans set up in the shed to try and keep us cool in the
incredibly hot conditions.
Saturday night was the “Birthday Party” at the Cootamundra RSL. The meal was very nice with great service. There
were a few speeches and then some told stories of their experiences of spending time around vintage cars.
Suddenly - on the big screen - Neil Sedaka appeared - singing with some Calendar Girls
- and everyone in attendance was given a 2020 Calendar with photos of CAMC cars, as a memento.
Sunday 2 Feb
Much cooler and we headed off from Cootamundra . . . . to Jugiong . . . . which is a lovely drive through undulating
hills with farms on either side.
We congregated at a park near the Jugiong Pool where we set up our tables and chairs under the trees.
Light rain started and we sat enjoying the cooling sensation after the extremely hot days.
After lunch the President, Malcolm Chaplin , and two foundation members cut the birthday cake under the cover of
an umbrella. Malcolm is a real character – he came out with a chain saw to cut the cake! We all enjoyed a piece of cake
despite the rain coming down.
And not long after we decided to thank our friends in CAMC for a fantastic weekend which was so well organised, bid
them all farewell and headed home.
On the way home we came across a massive storm with rain so heavy you couldn’t see the road at all! I was driving and
as I don’t drive the Mercedes very often, I wasn’t sure how to turn the wipers on! I managed, but the wipers just
couldn’t keep up with the heavy rain and wild winds, so we and lots of other drivers left the Hume Hwy and sought shelter
where we could until the storm passed. It only lasted 10 minutes but it was bad enough to blow down some trees and
cover the road with debris and also to raise my heartrate to make me feel like I had run a marathon! Anyway, I now
know how to turn on the Merc’s wipers!! Luckily Ron, Carol and Gordon had turned off the Hum to go down Macquarie
Pass and missed the worst of the storm.
We all arrived home safely after another fun weekend together and look forward to our next adventure! We just hope it is
a bit cooler next time!

I thank the good folk at CAMC for inviting us to the 40th
Birthday Weekend. Eight Wodonga Historic Car Club
members and 2 members from the Goldfield Car Club met at Wodonga on Thursday 30th
January, drove UP to
Cootamundra via Hume Freeway and Coolac and stayed at Cootamundra Caravan Park.
That evening we were invited to Mal and Lin’s lovely home for a BBQ - wonderful night with great company and food.
Mal took us for a tour of his abode which is a credit to them.
Friday morning we explored the main street and met some of the friendly locals. The Get-Together at the Cootamundra
Airport made us feel welcome.
Unfortunately the alternator on my car (modern with A/C) died. Mal, busy as he was, took me to Repco for a new battery
– very much appreciated. John Milnes shot home and returned with a Multimeter – revealed the trouble, and drove me to
Dean Hefren’s Auto Electrician’s shop. Back to get my car – jump-started by Chris O’Berne. Even though it was Friday
knock- off time, Dean fitted a new alternator – which John Milnes collected just in time from Repco!
This is not a Hard Luck Story. Just a way of saying “Thank You” to all who helped me.

Saturday 1 Feb
CAMC took us on two tours out of town to see two fantastic car collections. And another collection at Snape’s Toy
Factory - where Lunch was served.
The Saturday Dinner at the Services Club with about 130 people was very good and interesting , chaired by Mal.
Sunday 2 Feb
Departed Cootamundra on a nice drive to JUGIONG Recreation Park where Michael Livingstone was honoured. A
SCENIC drive back to Cootamundra . We had dinner at the Services Club, topping the day off. Home on Monday
through Albury.
This was one of the best rallies we have attended.

Chris and I wish to thank the President, Committee and very generous members for hosting us at your extremely enjoyable
40th
Birthday celebrations which we attended on the weekend of 1/2/20.
We had a great time even though I did do some moaning about the extreme heat we endured on that weekend. In fact the
only real grumble was indeed the heat, as the weekend’s activities were second to none – just wonderful shed visits and
pleasurable evening entertainment – enjoyed by all. The entire experience has been and will be talked about for a long
time to come.
Thank You so much for making it possible for us to be with you on this very important occasion of your 40th
year as the
Cootamundra Antique Motor Club. WE will be back for your 80th
!!???

ABC Radio was playing songs about Holdens, Next the Wagga Radio Station was inundated by listeners
lamenting and reminiscing. I recognised a “ John from Hillston”, (Hey! He’s Member No. 280). And a Kim
from Stockinbingal? And an interview with Barry Gavin (Member No. 242) explaining his Slot Car set-up on a
model of Mount Panorama as a remembrance to HOLDEN HISTORY.

Last month I ended with an 1895 BENZ with a rather snazzy umbrella for weather protection. Well, things had
certainly improved by 1901 when the De Dion-Bouton pictured below was fitted with a windscreen, primarily for the
benefit of the rear facing passengers, so at the breakneck maximum speed of 38 kph the ladies hair would not become
dishevelled, and men’s hats would not be dislodged. It was not until the Type L of 1902 that a full canopy was fitted
to keep the rain off, but strangely the windscreen was done away with. . .
More than 3,000 Vis-à-vis were built in different versions because the original concept of both Count De Dion and
George Bouton was - a family oriented vehicle, where conversations could be had whilst travelling, vis-a-vis. [ ! ]
This was not the oldest De Dion-Bouton in the collection. There were two tricycles from 1898 and 1899 and another
28 cars covering the years 1902 to 1914.
The guide book told us that in 1900 De Dion-Bouton was the largest manufacturer of automobiles in the world, with
over 400 vehicles and 3500 motors produced in that year.
However, by the end of WW1 the automobile side of the business had been downgraded and the construction of rail
motors and aircraft engines took over.
Another interesting group of vehicles in this pre- WW1 section of the museum was the Serpollet, ranging from the
Vis-a-Vis of 1901 to the Double Phaeton of 1904. These were steam driven cars and according to the guidebook,
“despite the time it took to prepare and build up steam, the Serpollet steam car had a number of advantages such as
torque, power, flexibility, speed and - silence, making it ideal for long trips.”
In fact the 1902 Type H racer was capable of 130kph, and competed successfully in many races, with the car
pictured below having competed in the Paris-Madrid race in 1903, along with many other makes capable of similar
speeds. This race turned into something of a slaughter with more than 20 fatal accidents, including Marcel Renault,
and numerous spectators who were not yet wary of speeding vehicles. As a result of this the authorities stopped the
race at Bordeaux.

This museum is in Mulhouse, France. The Schlumph Brothers’ collection of historic cars (including over 130 BUGATTIs) was hidden away until 1976. It was Seized from the bankrupt brothers, cleaned up, and opened to the public as The Cite de l’Automobile.
