9 Myths about Hospice and Palliative Care

Through the years there have been many myths regardinghospice and what it means. Hospice isn’t a place - it’s a philosophy ofcare providing medical, emotional, and spiritual care focusing on comfort and qualityof life. Hospice is not just about those who are dying - it’s a comprehensive type ofcare that focuses on living—it’s about living as fully as possible, surrounded by familyand friends, up until the very end of life. Here are 9 other common myths that are associat-ed with hospice and palliative care:

1. Hospice care is only for the last few days of life....MYTHREALITY...Hospice patients and families can receive care and support for six months or longer, depending upon thecourse of the illness.

2. Choosing hospice means giving up all medical treatment....MYTHREALITY...Hospice places the patient and family at the center of the care-planning process and provides high-quality painmanagement and symptom control.

3. Everyone dies in a hospital....MYTHREALITY...Hospice goes to the patient and family at home—whether that’s a private home, a nursing home or assisted liv-ing facility, or a hospice residence.

4. Hospice is only for cancer or AIDS patients....MYTHREALITY...Over fifty percent of hospice patients are diagnosed with conditions other than cancer or AIDS.

5. Families are not able to care for people with terminal illnesses....MYTHREALITY...Hospice involves the family and offers professional support and training in caring for their loved ones.

6. Hospice is just for the elderly....MYTHREALITY...Hospice serves anyone facing a life-limiting illness, regardless of age.

7. There’s no hospice in my area....MYTHREALITY...Less than one percent of Medicare beneficiaries live in an area where hospice is not available.

8. Hospice only focuses on the dying process....MYTHREALITY...Hospice offers grief and bereavement services to family members and the community.

9. Hospice is expensive....MYTHREALITY...Hospice is covered under Medicare, Medicaid, most private insurance

plans, HMOs and other managed care organizations. If this informationabout hospice surprises you, take the time to find out more. The best

time to learn about hospice is before someone in your family isfacing a health care crisis. More information contact

10 FALL HOSPICE OF HOPE EDITION 2008

...TO TALK ABOUT HOSPICEIt’s an all too common situation. A family is at the bedside of a loved one who is seriously ill andnearing the end-of-life. Each member of the family has a different idea of what should be doneand what the patient would have wanted.Far too many people wait until they are in the midst of a health care crisis before thinking aboutwhat options are available or what care they or their loved ones would have wanted. Hospice ofHope professionals deal with these challenging situations every day – that’s what they are trainedto do.

When a family is coping with a serious illness and a cure is no longer possible, Hospice of Hope provides the type of care most people say theywant at the end of life: comfort and dignity. Considered to be the model for high-quality, compassionate care for people with a life-limiting ill-ness, hospice care includes expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support. Care is provided by an inter-discipli-nary team of professionals and trained volunteers. The wishes of the patient and family are always at the center of care.

Most hospice care is provided in the comfort of the patient’s home – where the majority of Americans have said they would want to be at thistime. Care is also provided in nursing homes, hospital care center rooms and our Inpatient Center. Hospice providers can help with information about care options and choices and ensure you live as fully as possible throughout your entire life. They will make sure your loved ones receive support as well.

Care is paid for by Medicare, Medicaid, and most private insurance plans and HMOs. The National Hospice and Palliative Care Organizationreports that more than 1.4 million people received care from our nation’s hospices last year.

One of the best ways to make sure you and your loved ones benefit fully from hospice, should you ever need this care, is to talk about it beforeit becomes an issue.

Every day, family members make decisions about what is best fortheir loved ones. If you are facing some difficult decisions aboutend-of-life care, Hospice of Hope might be the answer. Here areseven simple questions that will help you decide if it is time for hos-pice for you or your loved one.

1. Needing more help in at least three of the following areas:bathing, getting in and out of bed, dressing, bowel/bladder control, eating, ability to walk without help to the bathroom?

❑ Yes ❑ No

2. Needing frequent medical care such as more trips to the hospi-tal, more visits/calls to the doctor’s office, etc.?

❑ Yes ❑ No

3. Experiencing any unpleasant symptoms like pain, nausea/vomit-ing, shortness of breath, fear, anxiety, loneliness, etc.?

❑ Yes ❑ No

4. Spending more time in bed or a chair?

❑ Yes ❑ No

5. Being told by a doctor that life expectancy is limited?

❑ Yes ❑ No

6. Talking about making comfort and quality of life the most impor-tant focus of care?

❑ Yes ❑ No

7. Experiencing complications like pneumonia, urinary infections, anemia, shortness of breath, falls, etc.?

❑ Yes ❑ No

If you answered yes to more than two of these questions, perhaps it’s time to contact Hospice of Hope. Remember thatanyone can make a referral.
