Tobeginwith,thisyearfeaturedasignificantamount of change. one of the most important changes was the realignment of oHu from a regionally-based set of programs intothreedistinctlinesofservice:EarlyLearningand Child Development, placement (foster careandadoption),andCommunity-BasedFamilySupportServices.

this move allowed us to streamline our operations and align our best practices across the continuum of our services, regardless of region—ensuring each of the 10,000 children and families we serve receive the highest-quality services and care, no matter where they live. the move to the line of Service model also gives one Hope united valuableflexibility:itpreparesusforfuturegrowthintonewmarketsbyincreasingthescalabilityofourservices,andprovidesuswithanopportunitytomeettheuniqueandcomplexneedsofeachchildandfamilybygiving them the tailored and coordinated servicestheyneedtothrive.

Another exciting development that underscores our commitment to innovation was oHu’s selectionthroughtheConscienceCommunity network (CCn) as one of the recipients of a multi-million dollar Social Impact Bond, which will fund the expansion of proven programs that serve children who are duallyinvolvedinIllinois’childwelfareandjuvenile justicesystems.Thispublic-privatepartnership places us among a select group of organizations across the country that isembarking on promising new models of collaboration with government agencies and private funders.

we were all hanging on by a thread. we were all impacted by trauma.”

thE hEalIng PathWesignedupfortheHealingPathParentClasswhenwewerestrugglingwithoursonTommy*,whowehadadoptedasayoungchild.Ididnotseehowhewasaffectedbytraumabecausehecametousasaninfant,neverexperiencingabuseorneglect.MyhusbandandIwerelovingparentswhohadprovidedhimwithsupportforallofhis16yearsoflife,sittingbyhisbedsidethroughsurgeryandillness,andcheeringhimonthroughhisaccomplishments.Thenourdaughterfellgravelyillandwebeganspendinghoursandhoursatthehospital,upendingourroutineasafamily.Weevenhadtorelocateduringthistime.

Asparentsweweremakingeveryefforttobethere,butTommywasstruggling.HisgradesdroppedtoD’sandF’s,hehad lowself-esteem,hewasactingoutinclass,refusingdoinghishomework,andhisrelationshipwasdeterioratingwithourfamily.Itseemedlikeallwedidwasargueeverytimewespokewithhim.

Intheparentingclass,Ilearnedaboutthe“invisiblesuitcase”andrealizedTommyhadallthisbaggagehehadpacked away.Heworriednotjustabouthissisterandourmovetoanewplace,buthisownmedicalchallengesbroughtonbysevereprematurity,alcoholanddrugexposureinutero,andhislearningproblems.Irealizedthatwewereeachcarryingourownsuitcases.Ourfamilywasincrisis.Wewereallimpactedbytrauma.

ButsureenoughourHealingPathclassesslowlybeganmakingasignificantdifferenceinourlives.IcompletedclasssevenmonthsagoandTommyisdoingwonderful.Hemadethehonorrollandisadjustingtohighschool.Ourrelationshiphas becomemuchstrongerwithnotonlyTommybutwithallofourchildren,whoarethriving.MyhusbandandIevenbrought backourdatenight!

IamthankfulforthisclassandtheOHUstaffmemberwhotaughtit.SheremindedmethatmanytoolsIhadasaparent werenotbeingused.Togetherwebroughtbackroutine,positivereinforcement,individualattention,familytime,andopencommunication.BeforeIthoughttraumawassomeonebeingharmedphysically,butnowIknowotherwise.Weallcomefromsomewherewithourowninvisiblesuitcases.It’swhatwechoosetodowiththemthatmadeapositivedifferenceforourfamily.

Last fall, a familywith four foster childrenages18months to 5yearsenrolledatOHU’sElginChild&FamilyResourceCenter.Thechildrenhadbeen removed from theirbiological familyafewmonthsearlierandby the time theyarrivedat the centertheyhadalreadybeeninthreeotherfosterhomes.

Thetwoolderchildrenwerestrugglingwithinsecurity,fear,andanger.Theyexpressedtheseemotionsthroughextremebehavior,kicking, hitting, and cursing at peers and staff. Compounding the situation was the fact that the children’s birth parents—who wereactivelytryingtoreunitethefamily—feltthateveryonewasworking against them. Interactions among the staff and birthparents were stressful and negative, which adversely affectedthe children’s behavior and sense of security and belonging.Many attempts were made to discuss this situation with littleresolve.Finallyasa lastditcheffort tohelp thechildren,staff,and families, theCenter’sDirectorhadavery straightforwardconversation with the case manager, who was not an oHu employee,andameetingwassetuptobringeveryonetogether.

Itwasinthismeetingthatwallsbegantofall.Attimes,itwasaheated discussion. the birth mother was reassured that no one wasagainsther,norweretheymakingjudgmentcallsregardingherparentingskills.Itwasreiteratedthateveryone—Centerstaff,thecasemanager,thebirthfamily,andthefosterfamily—wereall on the same team, seeking solutions to help the children throughthisverydifficultsituation.

Oncethebirthmothersawthateveryonereallydidwanttohelpherandherfamily,shebegantosob.Thensheaskedifitwouldbeokay,sinceshewasnotworkingatthatpoint,tocomevisither children at the Center. She thought that spending more time with them would help the children’s behavior. the case manager agreed and said she would work with the courts to ensure that it would not be an issue. And in that moment, the birth mother wasputcompletelyatease.

She stated how much she would love to keep the children at the Center evenafter sheandherhusbandgot themback. Innotime,herentiredemeanortowardthestaffcompletelychanged.Infact,anOHUstaffmemberfromanotherprogramwasvisitingthe Center, saw this parent come in, and didn’t even recognize herbecauseherattitudewassocompletelydifferent.Shenowhasalightinhereyesandasmileonherface.Bothsheandherhusbandmakeitapoint tostopandsayhellototheDirector,and to engage in conversation with the children’s teachers.

the children returned home to live with their birth parents a fewmonthsago,andallarecurrentlystillenrolledattheElginCenter,wherethey’redoinggreat.Thefamilyhascomesofar.Whatadifferenceaconversationwithempathy,straightforwardtalk,andalisteningearcanmake.Thereishope!

we were in trouble. but we were determined to get to these children who had been entrusted to our care.”

goIng to grEat lEngthSOHUstaffmembersShardae’andMishirawerestuck.Literally.

Theywereontheirwaytopickupsiblings—ages8and9—whohadbeentemporarilyplaced with their maternal grandfather in rural Florida, after problems in their home. Because of his advancedagetheirgrandfatherwasn’tabletocareforthem.Additionally,ajudgehad just ordered that the children come back to their home in tampa, since school was starting thefollowingday.Shardae’hadbeentothegrandfather’shousepreviouslyandthetripwas arduous, even dangerous, so she asked Mishira to go along.

TogethertheysetoffthroughOcalaNationalForestinthecompanyvan,dodgingmassivepools ofwateronaroughroad.Lessthanhalfwaythroughthetripthevangotstuck.Worse,itstartedsinkingintothemudandquicklybeganfillingupwithwater.Shardae’andMishiracalled911andclimbedontotheroofofthevanforsafety.Theyspottedsignswarningaboutbearsandsawanimalsmovingaroundinthewaterrisingaroundthem.Theemergencyrespondershaddifficultlylocatingthevanandittookalmost45minutesforthemtoarrive.Whiletheywaited,Shardae’andMishira arranged with another staff member to get the children and take them to the local police station for pickup.

ThefiremenfinallyarrivedandescortedShardae’andMishiraofftheroofbeforeatowtruckhauledthevan.Theyrodealongandmetthechildrenatthepolicestation.Shardae’andMishirahadalreadysecuredasafehomeforthechildreninTampa,wheretheywere—afteraverylongjourneyforeveryone—droppedoffthatafternoon.

Thenextdaythechildrenstartedbacktoschoolandthey’renowdoinggreatintheclassroom. They’realsoflourishingintheirnewhomeandarethrilledtobebackwiththeirfriends.Asfor Shardae’andMishira,theirordealwas,intheend,likeanyotherdayatwork:nomatterhow fartheyhadtogoorwhatchallengesarose,theywouldfacethemheadonanddowhatever ittakestoensurethesuccessandwell-beingofthechildrenintheircare.

we started to accept him for who he is and once we did that, he started to excel.”

FragIlE, But wIth a PromISIng FuturESixteen-year-oldAndre*hadbeeninandoutoffosterhomesandhospitalsformostofhisyounglife.Severelydiabetic, suffering from celiac disease, and frustrated with his constant need to monitor his medical situation, Andre was failing physicallyandemotionally.Until,thatis,hecametoliveatOHU’sCentraliaResidentialTreatmentcampus.

InthehospitalAndrewouldsneakinfood,thenhoarditinhisroom,derailingallattemptstomanagehisdiabetes.BythetimehearrivedatGibbHousehehadn’tbeenstableinnearlysevenyears.BeforeOHU,noonehadfullyexplainedtoAndrehis own role in taking control of his health, so the staff there did a lot of work together prepping his med sheet and preparing astrictregimen.Andreandayouthcareworkerwouldtalkthrough“whatif”scenariossothatAndrewasconfidentin knowingwhatactionstotaketopreventproblemsbeforetheyarose.Healsobegantherapytoaddressemotionalissues.

OncetheresponsibilityofhishealthwasshiftedmoreontoAndre’sshoulders,heflourished.Andreworkedhard,followed hisregimen,stayedstable,andslowlybeganearningnewprivileges,suchas“signouts,”whichmeanthehadopportunitiestogointothecommunityforafewhours,justlikeanynormalkid.He’salsotakenonmoreresponsibilityinhisowncare,checkinghisbloodsugarregularly,countingcarbs,andgivinghimselfinsulinshots,allunderclosestaffsupervision.

TodayAndre’shealthismorestablethanever,andhisdiabetesisundercontrol.MedicallycomplicatedyouthlikeAndrestillhavemanychallengesaheadofthem,butwithcontinuedmonitoringandmanagementhecouldeventuallybeacandidateforaninsulinpump,openingupanewworldofpossibility.

Ontheir16thbirthdays,residentsatCentraliagettogoouttoeatwithstaffmembersoftheirchoosing.Andreaskedhis therapist,Jessica,tobeoneofthegueststoeatwithhimataChineserestaurant.Togethertheyworkedwithhismedicalteamtofindappropriatemenuitemsandtheyenjoyedadeliciousmealtogether.Andre,ateenwhowasn’tsurehe’deverfindlifeoutside of a hospital bed, can now envision a future.

OneHopeUnited’soverallfinancialconditionshowedcontinuedimprovementinFY14.Onthe operating front, we had a small operating loss of $151,298 versus an FY13 excess of $720,067. this loss results from continued tightening of our governmental funding, continued increasing cost pressures,andapurposefuldecisiontobuildagencyadministrativecapacity.

Onthenon-operatingfront,asignificantcapitalgrantfromtheIllinoisCapitalDevelopmentBoardforournewJolietfacilitycombinedwithcontinuedinvestmentgainstogenerate$3.8millionin non-operatingrevenue.

Thesecontinuedstrongfinancialoperationsimproveourabilitytocarryoutourmissionandvision.Theseresultshaveincreasedournetassetsby$8millionoverthepasttwoyearsandpermitus tooperateonanotherwisethinoperatingmarginwhileincreasingourcapacityforgrowthandprogram enhancement.

Operatingrevenueremainsrelativelyflat.Wecontinuetoexpectgovernmentalrevenuetobe constrained at best, and look to new, innovative programs, partnerships and collaborations to further protect children and strengthen families in the future.

People don’t know what to say when somebody’s kid is dying. our oHU Case worker, Katie, was probably my best friend. I don’t think there’s another case worker out there like her. she got us through hell.

Katie and everybody in the Effingham [IL] office went above and beyond what they were supposed to do. we could have just been another name, another statistic. but with one Hope United we were more than that.

and Katie became more than just a social worker…she became a part of our family. Honestly, without Katie and her determination, I don’t think my son would have survived.”
