Community Human Services to Open New Outpatient Treatment Centers: Services will fill a growing need in the communityBy Marta Sullivan, Senior Program OfficerCommunity Human Services (CHS) will soon be opening new outpatient treatment centers in both Monterey and Salinas! CHS has been providing quality treatment options for over forty years, and, with the Affordable Care Act and Medi-Cal expansion enabling more men and women to access treatment services, the time is right for us to move into the outpatient substance abuse treatment arena.

The Outpatient Treatment Centers will provide affordable, comprehensive alcohol and drug rehabilitation for people who do not require residential care. The outpatient program is designed to meet the needs of individuals who suffer from a substance abuse disorder but have been unable to stabilize their use on their own.

We understand that each person comes to treatment with diverse issues and problems and we are sensitive to our clients’ needs, preferences and readiness to change. Because we recognize the need for family education and involvement we will be offering counseling services and family groups to complement our other services and to provide support and guidance. Each client will receive a comprehensive assessment and be assigned a primary counselor who will work to develop an individualized treatment plan aimed at meeting their goals

CHS would like to offer a fond farewell to Youth Services Program Officer Vincent Delgado. Vincent started volunteering at Safe Place in 2008, while attending CSUMB. After receiving his B.A. in Social Behavioral Sciences he began working full-time at Safe Place as a Street Outreach Counselor. In late 2011 he was named interim Youth Services Program Officer and several months later, in early 2012, he was named to the position outright. Vincent’s youth, enthusiasm, leadership skills, and solid background allowed him to make numerous positive impacts on the program. He is well-respected by peers, subordinates, volunteers and clients and his leadership and personality will be missed tremendously. Vincent moved back to Southern California to be closer to his family and CHS wishes him great success in all of his future endeavors.Fortunately, Shirley Millico, also a former Street Outreach Counselor at Safe Place, has been hired to take over the Youth Services Program Officer position. Shirley has a Masters Degree in Social Work from San Jose State University and a wealth of experience working with and volunteering with at-risk youth in our local community. She last worked at Safe Place in 2005 and since then has continued to build on her education and expertise as a youth Counselor. In her new role she will oversee Safe Place and Safe Passage. We are pleased to welcome Shir-ley to the CHS team and look forward to benefitting from her passion to help youth in need. If you get a chance, stop by Safe Place and say “hi” to the newest member of our Leadership Team!

of health and freedom. We will also provide medical oversight and utilize the latest evidence based practices.

Services will include intake and screening assessment, medical assessment and physical examination, individualized case management, group, individual, and family counseling, addiction and recovery information, 12-step program facilitation, relapse prevention, individualized treatment planning, trauma counseling, communicable illness education, toxicology and drug screening, discharge planning, referrals to community resources, and continuing care support groups.

The outpatient programs will assist both men and women 18 years of age to 65 years of age who meet the diagnostic criteria in the DSM-IV for a substance abuse disorder. Treatment will be easily accessible and planning and case management ser-vices will address each participant’s level of need for appropriate stabilization and ongoing care. The ultimate goal of these programs is to help clients overcome their addictions and give them the tools for lasting stabilization and recovery.

The programs will offer flexible scheduling to fit clients’ needs with both day and evening programs. The initial program locations will be in Monterey at 2560 Garden Road and in Salinas at Off Main Clinic, 1083 South Main Street. Additional program locations may be added in the future.

Please call 831-658-3811 for more information on this or any of our other substance abuse, runaway and homeless youth, or mental health programs.

Community Human Services is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization and Joint Powers Authority. Addiction, mental illness and homelessness destroy lives and weaken families, therefore Community Human Services provides people of all ages with tools and support to overcome these challenges and create lasting change in their lives.

Outreach Team On PointIncreasing community awareness CHS prides itself on being an integral piece of the Monterey County substance abuse, mental health, and runaway and homeless youth continuum of services. We strive to get the word out about programs and take every chance available to engage the community and inform residents of the services we have to offer. To that end, we created an Outreach Team, made up of employees associated with each of our programs, to attend the various information sessions, fairs, meetings, forums, and outreach events Monterey County offers. Oftentimes employees volunteer to man information booths or attend events that are held on the weekends or after normal work hours. It is a true testament to the drive of our employees and to their belief in our programs that they are willing to spend their valuable free time letting others know about the services we offer.

In the past couple of months alone, CHS has attended the Veteran’s Stand-Down, Dia Del Trabajador, the Granite Rock Good Giving Day, the Military Community Resiliency Campaign, and Pasta with the Pastors. The Outreach Team has also helped plan several September National Recovery Month events, including the Train Station and Cookin’ for Recovery BBQ’s to help spread the word about our services. These BBQ’s featured free AIDS/HIV testing through a partnership with Central Coast HIV/AIDS Services, and drew 250-300 individuals at each event. (See photos on Page 3.)

Call for Goods and VolunteersCommunity support allows CHS to fulfill our mission more effectivelyCommunity Human Services couldn’t accomplish the work we do without the generous support of individual donors, foundations, businesses and government entities. Whether you’re a former client, or your life has been touched in some way by substance abuse, runaway and homeless youth, or mental health issues, or whether you’re just a concerned citizen, we need and welcome any contribution you can make to our cause.

CHS puts your financial contributions to work immediately to pay for general operating expenses that allow us to serve our clients — expenses like rent, utilities, salaries, benefits, food, medication, training — all the things that support our programs and make our services available to the low- and very low-income residents of Monterey County.

Our programs are also always in need of food, clothing, furniture or other goods and services that can help fill the needs of our residential and youth clients. (Clean socks are always at the top of our needs list!)

Also, if you have a special skill or just some free time to lend a hand to one of our programs please give us a call! Volunteering at CHS is a very rewarding experience and a great chance to give back to the community we call home.
