HOOK NORTON SCHOOL REPORTOnce again the school has had a busy, exciting year. In October wewelcomed a party of children and their teachers from our partnerschool in Sweden. The children stayed with host families in thevillage and joined in with British school life. Then last month wereciprocated with a party of our children visiting Vara and going toschool with their Swedish friends. They enjoyed not having to wearschool uniform and calling the teachers by their first names!Throughout the year we have been taking part in sportstournaments and musical events with the Chipping Norton partnership of schools.Children have visited museums far and wide, been to Weston-Super-Mare, Stratford,Devon and Dorset. Our ‘Write On’ Week in July was a big hit – I caught some Year 4boys writing stories in the library after one very inspiring session with a storyteller!A mixture of poetry, drama, storytellers, authors and parents who are writers madeit a week to remember. This year was also a year for good-byes. Ken Nash, our much loved caretaker, sadlylost his battle with cancer in March. Ken worked quietly and diligently to keep theschool clean and in good order. He was a real gentleman and is missed by everyoneat the school.Mrs Margaret Slatter, who has been a stalwart of the school for 28 years, has retiredthis year. Margaret began as a dinner lady (that was the job title then!) then movedto teaching assistant. She has supported the learning of generations of Hook Nortonchildren and really deserves a rest!We look forward to seeing allour children back, rested andready for the new school year inSeptember. Have a happyholiday.

HOOK NORTON BAPTIST CHURCHDuring the summer months every Sunday service hasa few 'regulars' missing due to holidays, so it was quiteexciting on July 15th to have the church and galleryfilled for the monthly children's (JAM) service, augmented by approximately 60 youngsters and theirleaders from the Cornerstone "Camp-Over" being heldat the school playing field. Children from the 4Cornerstone Churches apparently had a great weekendof activities, fun and Bible-teaching, with good food supplied by the Baptist Church.Their exhausted leaders probably were glad to get home for a good sleep afterwards! This is the second year the "camp-over" has been held at Hooky school, andCornerstone are very grateful to the school authorities for allowing it.Also on July 15th our church took part in the (now) annual summer tea party andunited service at Wiggington Methodist Church, along with friends from St. Peter's,Hooky, and Holy Trinity, Chipping Norton.. This year, being the 300th anniversary ofthe birth of Charles Wesley, the worship centred around some of his many hymns, and his remarkable contribution to the Christian Church.

Bookings are now being taken for Holiday Club which, this year, runs from Monday, 13th to Thursday 16th of August (4 daysinstead of the usual 5), ending with the Family Barbecue onThursdayevening. Itwill, asbefore, beled by Ian &

Elaine Coules, and the theme is"Shipwrecked! A tropicaladventure." Booking forms havebeen given out at school, butmore can be obtained from thechurch office if necessary.Completed forms may be putinto the church mail box.Looking ahead to autumn, ourHarvest service this year will beon Oct 7th, and will be led byPeter Grant, the InternationalDirector of TEAR FUND.I mentioned various 'regulars'missing from services due toholidays. Some, unfortunately, are not there because of illness, disability or frailty, and weparticularly think of Cyril &Audrey Taylor, and Ernest &Eleanor Woolley. Our love andprayers are with them.Dorothy Smith 737266; JohnTaylor, Church Office,737315

ST PETER'S CHURCHNot even the dismal June and July weather could dampen the spirits of all thoseinvolved in the recent Hook Norton Flower Festival and Open Gardens weekend(June 30th – July 1st). It may have been wet andgloomy outside, but St. Peter’s was ablaze withover 25 wonderful, creative flower displays, designed to reflect the words of some of ourfavourite hymns. The rain also didn’t seem toput off too many ‘garden watchers’, who bravedthe showers to appreciate the beautiful gardensopen to view on both the Saturday and Sunday. What a wonderful way to celebrate God’screation on earth. The Flower Festival weekendwas ‘opened’ on the Friday night (June 29th), St.Peter’s Day, with a special Patronal festivalservice, at which the Venerable Julian Hubbard,Archdeacon of Oxford, was preaching. Manythanks to all those who made the weekendpossible. Heartfelt thanks especially to aseemingly tireless Mary Powell, chief organiserand lynchpin of the event, along with the ladiesand children who created the displays and allthose who opened their gardens and ran therefreshment stalls both at their homes and atchurch. Thanks also to Tom at the village shop, who supplied the flowers and was an enormoushelp, the Brewery for the printing, Janet and BillRandall, who ran the plant stall, to Laura Hines, whose cards were on sale at St. Peter’s on theSunday, and to those who allowed the church toborrow some valuable artefacts for the displays. Thanks also to everyone who was involved in stewarding, moving furniture, organising rotas, making cakes, manning the tea urns, and generally working likestink behind the scenes. The weekend raised over £2,400 for St. Peter’s, but the joyit brought to those who came along was truly priceless.Continuing on the ‘nature’ theme, St. Peter’s has also published an A4-sized NatureCalendar for 2008. With space to write notes for each day, each month features astunning seasonal photograph by Patrick Fox. Priced at £5 each, the calendars will beavailable to purchase throughout the year, at church on Sunday mornings, or fromPatrick and Sophia directly (730818). A number of people have also requested printsof some of the photographs, and this can also be arranged. All monies from sales willgo to St. Peter’s.We are hopefully also still on track to have all the pews in St. Peter’s replaced withmore comfortable, upholstered wooden and metal chairs, by the end of this year.Pending Diocesan Advisory Committee final approval, the work is due to be carriedout in October. We have already received many kind donations to help cover the costof the chairs, and any donation, however small, would help considerably, and can begift-aided by tax-payers. Each wooden chair is going to cost £75, and if anyone wouldlike to donate the cost of a ‘whole’ commemorative or memorial chair, a simple brassplaque inscribed with a name and date can be added. Please speak to Keith (737657)

FRIENDS OF HOOK NORTON SCHOOLA BIG THANK YOU to everyone who helped out at the Hook NortonMidsummer Fayre, on Friday 22 June. The afternoon was a greatsuccess, raising £820 and was very well supported. Staff andgovernors ran the stalls and raffle, while many parents were generouswith their time and helped set up and clear away.We are already looking forward to our autumn programme. Pleasecome to the FOHNS Annual General Meeting on 18 September at8pm in the school Study Centre. This is an important meeting where we plan ouryear's events and elect committee members.I am standing down as chair and from the committee, but will always be available tohelp out at events. It has been a fun year as chair, and a very successful one in termsof raising funds for the school. My thanks go to all the people who come along to ourevents, to those who volunteer time and help and to everyone who has donatedsomething for the fayres that we have run over the last couple of years.A huge thank you to the committee which is a fabulous group, good fun and verysupportive! It would be really lovely to see some new faces involved with FOHNS. It plays a veryimportant part in the life of the school, but we cannot rely on the same parents allthe time. We would dearly love more newcomers. What would you like to see happento support the school? Come and tellus your ideas. Maybe you have agroup of friends who would like tobring their collective energy toFOHNS. We would value yourcontribution. If you would like to talkto one of the committee, please donot hesitate to contact us. We’realways around: a list of our names ison the notice board in the foyer ofthe school. Have a fantastic summer!Nancy Hawkins, Chair,Friends of Hook Norton School,01608 738108

HOOKY PLAYERSAt a committee meeting of the above group on 12th June 2007 itwas agreed to postpone the September production of 'The Hauntingof Hill House' to next June, when more people will be available forthe play. There was so much interest in the play from the generalpublic that we felt justified in holding it over until then. In themeantime it is hoped to arrange some play readings to which all willbe welcome (existing members and, hopefully, new ones). We have been waiting on the Yenworthy dates from the school before finalising thepantomime. These are now to hand and the performances of 'Beauty and the Beast'are booked for the 23 - 26 January at 7.30 p.m. with a matinee on 26 January at 2.30p.m. as well, in the Memorial Hall, as usual.Children's auditions, which will involve speaking parts, will be at 7 p.m. on Tuesday11th September 2007 in the Memorial Hall. The teen and adult auditions are onThursday 13th September 2007 at 8 p.m. also in the Memorial Hall. If you have everaspired to anything - in front or behind the scenes, this is your chance to comeforward. No previous experience is necessary, so don't be shy! It's a fun thing to do.The pantomime will be directed by Richard Wheelton, with Anna Bradshaw assistingand being responsible for the dancers. Cate Whitehead will be musical director andrehearsals will commence at the beginning of October. Nigel Whitehead will again bestage manager, with myself as producer. Kate Underwood will design the set, soexpect some inspired effects. At the time of going to press the Players have a need of young adults of both sexes(16 - 30 age group) and if you can sing or dance, so much the better. You want to know more? Then ring me on 730355 or Richard Wheelton on 737423.

GOT BROADBAND?Although low-cost broadband connections are now cheaper than dial–up, too manyconsumers are still getting a bad deal through lack of information. Most of us nowhave a computer in the house and the majority of computer users now have abroadband connection to the Internet. Although the market is fiercely competitive, asignificant percentage of consumers are still paying too much for broadband throughlack of information rather than through choice. Changing your Internet ServiceProvider (ISP) can be confusing, but a little thought about what you want (and maybewhat you don’t want), can help. It’s not just the Internet. One of the most significant changes over the last eighteenmonths has been the re-packaging of broadband, combining it with fixed and/or mobiletelephone services. Both Carphone Warehouse and Orange for example, now offer broadbandservices with mobile phone contracts. Some operators such as BT and NTL are extending thisfurther to include a fourth component, digital TV services. Most ISP's will allow you to switchyour broadband service, usually after an initial fixed contract period, giving you the flexibilityto change your provider and get a better deal. You might want to switch to an ISP offeringcheaper phone calls, cheaper broadband or both. Whatever your reason for switching, thereare a few things that you should consider before doing so.Getting a MAC code. To enable the transfer from your current provider you will needto contact them and get them to issue you with a MAC code, which identifies your specificbroadband connection, allowing you to migrate smoothly from one provider to another.A MAC should be issued to you from your provider within five working days and is usuallyvalid for a month.Contract or no contract? In afast-moving market, while you wouldn’twant to switch providers every month, youmight not want a five-year contract. Checkon how long you are contractually obligedto stay with your new provider and what itwill cost if you choose to leave before thecontract is finished. There are a fewproviders in the market who do not requirea fixed term contract at all and this maywell become more widespread in future.E-mail Addresses/Phone NosContrary to popular belief, you don’tnecessarily have to change your e-mail address when you move ISP –although your new ISP will certainlyoffer you a new one. Some ISP’s willallow you to go on using their e-mailindefinitely even after you have left. Most will allow you to continue usingtheir e-mail addresses for a period ofmonths. However, if you use OutlookExpress it may have to be re-configured. Check with your ISP.Oh - and you shouldn’t have tochange your phone number either.Howard Aiken, OxfordshireHome Computer Service, 07732-660737 [email protected]

FESTIVAL OF FINE ALES 21st JULY 2007Once again (if you remember last year) Hooky’s annualbeerfest was blessed with perfect weather…….if you’re anamphibian, that is. It seems that the festival is rapidly takingover from Glastonbury in the rain and mud stakes and thisyear came within hours of being cancelled due to flooding, asthe Pear Tree was several inches deep in water the day before. However Ale-Lovers are made of sterner stuff and clearlyviewed attendance at Hook Norton’s 14th Annual Festival OfFine Ales as being an “essential journey” and thus to bemade in spite of flood warnings, washed out roads and globalwarming. The weather was comparatively merciful and therewere unconfirmed reports of sunshine and glimpses of bluesky for at least several minutes during the day. Fortunatelythis didn’t disrupt the rain too much and the now familiarcollection of gazebos and shelters sprung up along the bank opposite the Pear Tree.Despite the weather and transport difficulties hundreds of people arrived – somebrave souls even camping out - and were not disappointed. While the grown-upssampled the delights of the 87 different ales on tap this year, the kids got stuck in tothe Pear Tree’s playground and generally enjoyed an excuse to stomp around in themud without getting into trouble. Although the pig-roast was sadly missed this year, hunger was held at bay by fish & chips, hotdogs and hamburgers.Entertainment from the Owslwick Morris Dancers, visiting Morris Dancers from Leedsand a tremendous line-up of live bands helped keep spirits up. With a high standard, asalways, Pete Watkins did an excellent job of local talent-spotting. A notableperformance from the Paramedics, a schoolboy group, filled the tent with their cover ofLet There Be Rock and then kept it filled through the set. I’m sure a music journo woulduse words like “tight” and “confident” at this point, but their own description is probablysufficient: Cool! However, none surpassed the showmanship of Pete Watkins, which hedemonstrated in spades – to the crowd’s delight – later in the evening.Which brings us nicely to what the whole thing is about: raising money for charity asa local community - a feat which is only made possible by the volunteers who give uptheir free time, the Pear Tree who act as hosts and, of course, James and the HookNorton Brewery whose expertise, logistics and general “anything else you need”support has made this one of the most consistently successful events on the Real Ale

Festival calendar. A full roll of honour can be found onthe website www.hookybeerfest.co.uk – shortly to bejoined by a fantastic set of photos taken by JenniferLanham! In the meantime, special thanks go to Denis, Gill,Margaret, Tristan, Graham, Gary, all the Beggars (youknow who you are!) and the 75+ breweries from allover the country who kindly supplied the beer. We havea fantastic collection of photos of the day, taken bytalented local photographer Jennifer Lanham. These will be loaded onto the beer festival website -www.hookybeerfest.co.uk - over the next few days.Individual photos can be purchased and Jennifer haskindly offered to donate all the proceeds to charity! Please see the website for details, or contact GillBegnor ([email protected]) if you want to order

It would be great to spend time inthe great outdoors whether that is a BBQ at home or heading out camping for theweekend. Here are a few points to help you enjoy a safe summer:-Barbecues• Make sure your barbecue is in good working order.• Ensure the barbecue is on a flat site, well away from a shed, trees or shrubs.• Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area.• Never leave the barbecue unattended.• Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies.• Ensure the barbecue is cool before attempting to move it.Camping• Allow at least 6 metres (18 feet) spacing between tents.• Never use candles in or near tent - always use a torch.• Discourage smoking - especially in smaller tents.• Do not use cooking equipment in smaller tents.• Ensure everyone knows the location of the nearest telephone and if applicable nearest fire point in case of emergency.

The exhibition is organised by Palazzo dellePapesse, Siena and MAN, Nuoro, and has its only UK showing at Compton Verney. The theme is explored through the medium of installation, video and photography.Artists include: Doug Aitken, Laurie Anderson, Carlo Benvenuto, Christian Boltanski,Fabrizio Corneli, Ceal Floyer, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Nino Longobardi, Urs Lüthi,Ottonella Mocellin and Nicola Pellegrini, Tracey Moffatt, Margherita Morgantin, MarvinE. Newman, Annie Ratti, Rosanna Rossi, Anri Sala, Susanne Simonson, Fiona Tan,Andy Warhol, William Wegman and Francesca Woodman.Shadows have been a constant source of inspiration from Egyptian tomb paintings toearly Renaissance art, and the exhibition explores how the theme emerges in the workof modern and contemporary artists. Recurring fascination with this theme lies partlyiin that the shadow as a scientific, but enigmatic phenomenon also has illusoryconnotations. Reassuring yet forbidding, shadows carry a range of associations, andthis exhibition offers a series of atmospheric encounters which reflect the constructedsuperstitions of society as well as expressing individual psychological states. The Shadow is curated by the Italian academic and critic Lea Vergine, and isaccompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.Contact: Ina Cole, Communications Manager, Compton Verney, Warwickshire,CV35 9HZ, Tel: 01926 645540; Email: [email protected]

Often imitated but never bettered, Star Wars (or "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope",as it is now officially entitled) marked a sea-change in the way that film-makerstreated space and space travel. Watch George Lucas's 1977 masterpiece on the bigscreen, and recapture the excitement of a film which not only redefined special effectstechnology, but which altered the whole business of cinema itself.

LOST CAT?I have a smallish, oldish, black &white cat as a regular visitor tomy home in Austins Way. I'm notsure if it's a he or she, but it'squite distinct with a smudgeunder its chin. Being a cat person,I don't mind a bit and it gets onquite well with my own two (evenpinches their dinners from time totime). However, I'm veryconscious that this is somone'spet and I don't want to encourageit away from it's own home.If it's yours, please give me a calland let's sort out what you wantme to do next time he or she popsthrough the cat flap - shoo it awayor give it a cuddle!

Copy of a Letter of Feb 19, 1912, from Hooky's John Gibbins,Southern Ontario, Canada, to his Sister-in-Law in Leicester, England

% G.H. LeslieNorval Station, Ontario

Feb 19, 1912Dear Ivy (Cox) I am afraid you will think we are a long time in answering your letter. Iwas pleased to hear from you & must not forget to thank you for the fadingpapers you send. We are glad of anything relating to agriculture. You would see by the letter I sent to you and Mother (Cox) how very much Ilike the new life in Canada. We were sorry to hear from Mother's letter that shehas been so poorly; also that you had been suffering with your teeth. We hopeby now you are both quite better. It seems so funny to hear Mother say she is looking for some sunny days, when here we are having the sun shine from morning 'till night. It is reallybeautiful to get out in it--wish we could bottle some of it & send to you. It hasbeen much warmer lately, & we think the coldest part of the winter is over.We were cutting some wood for fuel a week last Saturday & the other youngfellow who works for Mr. Leslie & myself were taking turns at working the steamcircular saw. We had been getting along very well & had nearly finished when hegot his hand too near the saw & we were horrified at seeing him go running offwith loose finger ends swinging about. He had to go to Guelph hospital & thedoctor took off part of his first two fingers & managed to patch up the next one.He is not yet back.We shall soon be busy making preparations for moving to New Ontario. The partwe are thinking of settling in is about 400 miles north from here. The farms canbe bought at 2 /- per acre, in 160 acre lots & the land is good for farmingpurposes & it is not far from a railway. We are looking forward to having a placeof our own. I shall probably go up to the part first & see what things look like. The weevil which destroys peas is unknown in this part & first class potatoes canbe grown.I shall try to have a bee farm too.I will close now hoping you and Mother are quite well & with my best love. Your loving brother John Gibbins

WILDLIFE NOTEBOOK - MID MAY TO MID JULYIn the middle of May Mr Atkinson, who has been walking the fields for 50years, for the first time ever saw 3 Badgers out in the daylight over four days, one on the first evening and two on the following evenings. They ran towardshim and, only moved off when they were about a sticks length away. He wasabout 40 yards away from their sett.Betty Couldrey, who lives in Bourne Lane, on 5th June saw a brown blob inthe hedge in Sibford Road and looked in her binoculars to discover it was aFox which got up, had a good stretch and walked along before disappearing. Later thatevening she looked out to see a Fox with a rabbit in its mouth in the same spot in thehedge. Ian Kaye in The Bourne also saw a young Fox on 5th June in his front gardenwhich ran across the wall. He also saw three young Foxes by the front of Fanville Farmon the evening of 3rd June. We had a young Fox in our garden during the day on 9th July.On 11th June there were four Fallow Deer in the field on the left at the top of the hillleaving the village going towards Chipping Norton.Jo and Gary Parkinson were at the Hooky allotments on 3rd June when they noticed thata beautiful Grass Snake, which was about three feet long, had wriggled into the nettingand got stuck. With the help of Tim Burchell, they snipped the netting and freed thesnake, which was understandably annoyed and upset. Celia and Kjell Trogstad, who livein the East End, have seen Grass Snakes which have taken residence in the undergrowthby their pond. They see the adult on most days and there is at least one baby, a foot longand the thickness of a worm. These snakes are not poisonous.David Shirt has seen a Little Owl in Sibford Road sitting in the sun on a fence post at5.15pm on 15th May. He has seen a couple of Hobbies in the area and saw one fly passedtheir garden being harried by a Crow on 12th May. A Hobby was seen flying over a fieldin East End on 29th May. They have heard Cuckoos several times which is a bigimprovement on last year, but apart from the Cuckoo being heard on 21st April the onlyother report is one heard on 16th May.Celia and Kjell Trogstad saw a Sparrowhawk in their garden killing a Blackbird. AnneSwainbank in Chapel Street had a female Sparrowhawk in her garden on 4th July. I wasvery pleased to hear from Jonathan Muller, who moved to Watery Lane at the start of Mayfrom their home in urban Reading, where the rare sighting of a Blackbird was a cause forexcitement, so they are really enjoying the variety of birdlife coming to their gardenfeeders, including a Great Spotted Woodpecker and Blackbirds which had a nest in theclematis just outside their kitchen window, but the most exciting bird was a Bullfinchwhich they saw on 26th May and 1st June. A thought on this is that maybe we shouldappreciate the wildlife around us and not take it for granted? David Shirt also had anunusual sight, on 25th May, of a handsome pair of Bullfinches close to their living roomwindow just 3 - 4 feet away, hopping about on ceanothus which made a colourful picture.Ian Kaye had a Green Woodpecker in his garden pecking insects from out of the wall forabout 15/20 minutes at 5.45 am. Max and Connie Harris, who live in Ironstone Hollow, have seen a Great Spotted Woodpecker about six times over the last month or so in theirgarden. A lot of Yellowhammers have been seen around in the road and hedges. An Orange Tip and Red Admiral butterflies were seen on 2nd June, but overall Butterflieshave not been seen so much this year, I suppose due to all the rain, but over the weekendof 7th/8th July when the sun was shining there were Small Tortoiseshell, Peacock,Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown and Common Blue flying around. A Cinnabar Moth, which isbrightly coloured, was rescued from their pond by Celia and Kjell Trogstad.Bats have been seen flying in the early evening.Thank you very much for contacting me with your sightings.

HOOK NORTON (SENIOR SECTION) FOOTBALL CLUBSince the last Newsletter was circulated, our First Team’s promotion to the PremierDivision has been confirmed by the Hellenic League as a result of the team’s welldeserved 3rd place finish in Division 1 (West) at the end of last season. Accordingly,we warmly congratulate Manager Ben Spiero and his Assistant Adrian White who, together with their players, have realised this most creditable achievement for ourvillage club.

Hook Norton FC First Team - Season 2006/2007Promoted to Premier Division of the Hellenic Football LeagueAt the time of writing, in association with the Sports & Social Club to which it isaffiliated, the Football Club is now tasked to provide the necessary facilities for Step5 Football, including modest spectator accommodation, floodlights and, of course, thenew clubhouse/pavilion. Whilst the clubhouse/pavilion is unlikely to be available foruse until the end of the year at the earliest, prior to which the existing building willcontinue in use, the Football Club will be aiming to have the other facilities in place bymid September after the cricket season has ended. With the new season beginning on11th August, it therefore means that all early First and Second Team matches have tobe played away from home until such time that The Bourne can make its annualtransition from a cricket arena to a football arena. Until that time, as usual, theFootball Club extends its good wishes to the Cricket Club for a successful season inboth the league and in any cup competitions.Once more, Ben and Adrian will be at the helm of the First Team (again generouslysponsored by Smiths of Bloxham) as it sets out on the daunting but challenging taskof locking horns with the likes of North Leigh, Hungerford Town, Highworth Town,Abingdon Town etc etc. Meanwhile, Stuart Lester will be managing the Second Teamfor the second season running, ably assisted by the loyal and ever-reliable Layi Olubaji.Twice-a-week training began in early July and, in advance of the new season, friendlymatches have been arranged, details of which will be notified around the village nearerthe time. In conclusion, we have much to look forward to and, as always, we lookforward to your loyal support and encouragement in what will undoubtedly be a toughbut, hopefully, enjoyable season for our players, officials and supporters alike. Up theHooky! Geoff ‘ Jesse’ James
