ShaUn BoneTTa ChairpersonFollowing hotly on the heels of our successful run of ‘Twelfth Night’, we bring you something that has challenged us in a different way. Last year, ‘The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe’ was such a success that the company decided on another summer musical; ‘Urinetown’, a little known American comedy musical set in the future where everyone has to ‘pay to pee’. It is clever satire that is surprisingly relevant in today’s political climate. The show parodies musicals such as Les Misérables and we’ve so enjoyed rehearsing for this energetic show packed with fabulous songs, great music, laugh out loud comedy and Hope. The entire ensemble has worked tirelessly to bring this excellent comedy musical to life and we ‘hope’ you enjoy the experience as we take you into the future and all the way to Urinetown.

aleX JaCkSondirectorWelcome to Urinetown, not the place of course... the musical. As you can probably imagine there’s been plenty off hilarious additional toilet humour at rehearsals (mostly from Lou Pottinger) and the show features both new and existing talent within the group which is always great to work with. I’m so pleased with how the show has turned out, the whole cast has worked so hard towards the fi nished product having taken a chance on a relatively unknown show (though it is hugely famous on Broadway). Many cast members might have grown a bit and learnt a thing or two along the way. A few of the cast you see tonight have never been on stage before so the result is fantastic. Our production probably won’t win a Tony Award, but everyone involved deserves huge recognition for the talent and commitment they give both on stage and promoting the produciton, building the set, organising the tech... the list is endless. Lastly, I hope you enjoy the story of Bobby Strong and his weakened bladder. Welcome to Urinetown; the musical!

SynopSiS‘Welcome to Urinetown, not the place of course, the musical’

Our narrator, Officer Lockstock, introduces us to the show and Little Sally, a poor girl with big dreams and no cash. At Public Amenity #9 (the poorest, filthiest urinal in town), the poor queue up to pay UGC (Urine Good Company) to go to the toilet. Private bathrooms are no longer allowed since the great drought made the reservoirs dry up.

Meanwhile in his office Caldwell B. Cladwell, owner of UGC, welcomes Hope his daughter to her first day at work having graduated from ‘the most expensive university in the world’. Senator Fipp demands Cladwell pay him the promised bribe money and Hope meets the staff at UGC and her fathers close political allies and investors. On her way home, Hope meets our hero Bobby Strong and shares a kiss with him.

Bobby Strong an attendant at Public Amentiy #9 rebels against his manager Penelope Pennywise and starts a revolution at the toilet by allowing the poor to ‘pee for free’. Officer Lockstock busts the rebellion and Bobby and the poor take Hope as hostage as they run away from the authorities.

Act Two begins at the rebel’s secret hideout where Hope is being kept. Bobby agrees to go to the UGC headquarters to negotiate a deal with Cladwell himself. We discover that Penny, Fipp and several other allies to Cladwell regret listening to him but it’s too late as, upon finding out that Bobby has been sent to Urinetown, the rebels hunt them down and kill most of the remaining UGC supporters.

Hope and the rebels confront Cladwell and send him to Urinetown, they ignore the water shortages and eventually die of dehydration and other related diseases.
