What is acne?Types of acne include pimples (that are either whiteheads or blackheads), papules (small, inflamed, infected, raised bumps that may be red and tender), pustules (tender, red, raised bumps with pus at their tips), nodules (large, solid, painful lumps below the surface of the skin), and cysts (painful, pus-filled, boil-like infections causing lumps beneath the skin’s surface).

No matter the type, acne is often difficult to manage, and affects more than 40 – 50 million Americans, usually between the ages of 12 – 24. By the mid-teens, more than 40% of adolescents have acne or acne scarring. In 2004, the direct cost of conventional acne treatments was more

than $2.2 billion, which does not include costs due to secondary treatment of side effects. Some suspected issues arising from the use of antibiotics and other prescribed acne medications include yeast infections, impaired digestion, the potential of severe birth defects, and an increased risk of depression and suicide.

What causes acne?Normally, the skin produces sebum (oil) that moves up the hair follicle and keeps the skin soft and waterproof.

Old skin cells constantly slough off, and the normal skin bacteria, Propionibacterium acnes, feeds on the sebum. However, when hair follicles become clogged and sebum and dead skin cells build up in the follicle, P. acnes can cause inflammation. During major hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, this cycle is accelerated.

While conventional medical experts report the causes of acne stem solely from overproduction of sebum, irregular shedding of dead skin cells, the buildup of bacteria, and heredity factors, naturopathic practitioners have a different approach.
