천연 (자연 )페인트의고찰페인트는 실내공기오염의 주된 원인이 되며 , 미국의 EPA 는 환경에 의한 인체의 위해성 원인물질 5 가지에 페인트를 포함시키고 있다 . 페인트로부터 야기되는 주요 위해물질은 벤젠 , 톨루엔 , 자일렌과 같은 VOCs 물질과 포름알데히드 등이 있다 . 이러한 물질은 발암성 물질과 신경계 질환의 원인물질을 포함하고 있다 .
1978 년 이전에 생산된 페인트의 경우에는 납성문을 포함하고 있고 이는 인체에 여러 가지 문제를 야기하는 물질이다 . 1950 년 이전의 경우에는 페인트에 납성분이 50% 정도가 함유된 납페인트도 제조되었다 . 페인트 용매 ( 솔벤트 ) 는 인체에게 심장 질환을 야기할 수 있다 . 특히 콘텍트 렌즈를 착용한 사람에게 메탄올이나 다른 화학물질의 작용으로 심장에 무리를 주게 되어 주의를 요한다 . 더욱이 콘택트 렌즈를 착용한 사람에게는 화학물질이 렌즈에 흡착되어 눈의 자극을 유발 하거나 시력 저하의 원인이 될 수 있다 .
페인트는 대부분 재실공간의 표면에 시공되고 있어 거주자는 새롭게 페인트 칠을 한 실내 표면으로부터 쉽게 유해물질이 방출되어 재실자가이에 노출될 수 있다 . 페인트에서 방출되는 VOCs 는 시공후 6 개월정도 꾸준하게 방출되는 것으로 보고되고 있다 . 신축주택의 경우에 페인트에서 방출되는 VOCs 는 주로 Gloss 페인트와 목부형 바니쉬(wood stain varnish) 에서부터 다량의 VOCs 가 방출되고 있다 .
, 완전 천연페인트란 석유화학 물질이 전혀 포함되어 있지 않은 페인트를 말한다 . 그러나 이라한 천연 페인트에도 자연적으로 생성된 천연 VOCs 물질을 포함하고 있다 . 예를들어 citrus-based solvent d, l-l imonene, turpentine, tung oil, or pine resins. 등이 있다 .
일반적으로 페인트와 같은 마감재료를 선정할 때 초기의 가격으로 인하여 천연 페인트 , 바니쉬 , 무해한 천연 마감재료에 대하여 적용을 기피한다면 , 유해한 오염물질인 VOC를 다량 함유된 마감자재를 선정할 경우에 이로 인하여 거주자들이 높은 농도의 유해물질에 노출되므로 야기되는 장기노출에 의한 위해성으로 인하여 결과적으로 비용이 더 크게 발생할 수 있는 점에 주목하여야 한다 .
