No Tickets? No Problem. The Best Places to Watch the Game Other than Beaver StadiumBy Camille Howlett

It’s a tough year to get Penn State football tickets, but you can still cheer on the Lions with tons of other pumped up fans. Here are our picks for where to watch.

Downtown State CollegeWatching the Penn State game downtown is just as fun as watching it from Beaver Stadium. When Penn State is away, these downtown restaurants provide the perfect environment for you to cheer for Penn State with hundreds of other fans.

Bar Bleu & Bar QueSmoked long and low, Beulah’s offers tender pulled pork, baby back ribs and smoked wings. The U‑shaped bar in the center is the perfect place to hang out and watch the game on seven HDMI televisions.

RotelliWith three Penn State fanatics as owners, there’s no better place to watch Penn State games than Rotelli. Located on the corner of Calder Way and McAllister Street in downtown State College, Rotelli’s large lower level accommodates large parties comfortably and has big screen plasma televisions. Enjoy the game on the outdoor patio, accessorized with a flat‑screen plasma television.

Bill Pickle’s Tap RoomBill Pickle is a local legend who left a lasting mark on State College and around the world. Enjoy the game on multiple 42” HDTV’s, including two televisions in the men’s bathroom so you’re sure not to miss a second of the game.

Gingerbread ManWith seating for 200 and a spacious full bar, the Gingerbread Man is a comfortable place to watch the game. Complete with covered outdoor seating in case of rain and a convenient parking lot right

across the street, the only thing you’ll have to worry about is a Penn State victory.

HootersNow offering a full bar, Hooters is an unbeatable location to watch the game. Hooters caters to football fans, featuring a limited time menu designed specifically for football season. With dozens of televisions, you won’t miss a single play.

North AthertonThe Arena Bar & GrillAt The Arena, you can watch the game on your own individualized flat screen television or one of the large screen TV’s with surround sound. Don’t worry about being bored during commercials, The Arena offers trivia, karaoke and lots of other “toys” for everyone to enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere.

Champs Sports Bar & GrillChamps Sports Bar and Grill broadcasts all Penn State games on multiple big screens. Featuring entrees like the Mike Piazza sandwich and the Roethlisberger burger on the menu, Champs is an essential stop for any sports broadcast.

Otto’sEnjoy the game at one of the top 50 places to have a pint, according to BeerAdvocate.com. Otto’s brews their own beer and has at least 12 varieties on tap. Otto’s is committed to freshness in their food as well, as a proud member of the Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture.

There are plenty of seats at Quaker Steak and Lube with the game on TV in any direction.

The walls in the newly-renovated Home Delivery Pizza Pub are lined with HDTV’s showing all the day’s games.

Bonfatto’sBonfatto’s in Bellefonte features delicious menu items and a full bar in a casual, family environment. In business since 1919, Bonfatto’s is a local icon, featuring its own trademarked Bonanza™ Sub.

This historic tavern is still housed inside the original 1819 stonework, keeping the temperature at a comfortable 68 to 70 degrees year‑round.

Kelly’sYou’ll have no problem finding Kelly’s, just look for the twelve foot tall steer on the roof. With five televisions, including an 81” projection screen, Kelly’s lounge offers a relaxed atmosphere to watch the big game. Since its 2004 opening, Kelly’s has been voted “The Best Steak Restaurant” three years in a row.

Prospector’s Allegheny Rib Co.At Prospector’s, you can watch the Penn State game while enjoying what ESPN GameDay called the “The Best Barbecue East of the Mississippi.” You can check out Prospector’s stand outside of Beaver Stadium or head to 2080 Cato Ave. to experience the charming atmosphere in person.

The classy scene at Bonfatto’s in Bellefonte even has leather couches in front of the big screen.

Everyone knows Penn State Football, Joe Paterno and all the traditions that the sport represents. With the Lions on a roll there’s no better time to show your spirit at other Penn State home sports! Check out events coming up this fall on campus.

Volleyball If you are not already aware, Penn State is a force to be reckoned with on the volleyball court. Both the men’s and women’s programs

won their respective national titles in 2007‑08, becoming only the second school to do so, and the first outside California.

While you can catch men’s matches in the spring, the women’s team is in the midst of another dominating season. Legendary coach Russ Rose, in his 30th season heading the Lions, is one of only three coaches who have surpassed 900 career wins. Some of the matches left on the home schedule include a Halloween contest with Big Ten power Minnesota (Oct. 31, 7:00 p.m.), a midweek clash with Indiana (Nov. 5, 7:00 p.m.)

and matches with Northwestern (Nov. 21, 7:00 p.m.) and Wisconsin (Nov. 22, 8:00 p.m.) to close out the regular season. But that’s not the end of women’s volleyball at Rec Hall this fall ‑ the team will host NCAA Regionals matches Dec. 12‑13.

Soccer The men’s and women’s soccer teams start their seasons early and will already close the regular season at the end of the month! See off the team’s seniors in their Senior Days ‑ the women against Ohio State (Oct. 31, 7:00 p.m.) and the men to follow against Indiana (Nov. 1, 7:00 p.m.). Soccer games are held at Jeffrey Field and are all free!

Field Hockey Head coach Char Morett’s field hockey team, last year’s collegiate runner up, is also nearing the end of a very tough regular season. Honor the seniors on the team at their contest against Michigan (Oct. 26, noon). Field hockey games are also free at AstroTurf Field.

Fencing The fencing team ‑ 2007 National Champions and perennial favorites to win the title ‑ can be seen here at the Garret Penn State Open on Nov. 1‑2. After a long season, plan to catch the Lions and other title favorites when Penn State hosts the NCAA Championships Mar. 19‑22!

Among the several promotions that coincide with varsity athletic events is CODE BLUE, an initiative to increase student attendance. Activities include a free tailgate, giveaways and a chance to win free textbooks from the Penn State Bookstore! Upcoming CODE BLUE games include the field hockey regular season finale (Oct. 24, 5:00 p.m.) and women’s vollleyball’s clash with Indiana (Nov. 5, 7:00 p.m.)

Other promos that have completed for the fall season but will be back this winter and spring are WBCA Pink Zone games (mark your calendar for the Lady Lion game on Feb. 15) and Throw Back Night, where the players wear the original Penn State colors of pink and black!

It’s not all about the varsity Olympic sports, though! Great competition, die‑hard fans and Penn State pride are strong at other PSU club sport events.

Hockey If you haven’t experienced Penn State Hockey Valley, this is the year to do it! The Icers, members of the American Collegiate Hockey Association, play a tough schedule from October‑February. There are several opportunities to catch the team at home: against Navy (Oct. 24‑25), Ohio (Oct. 31‑Nov. 1) and Drexel (Nov. 7, 9:00 p.m.), all at the Ice Pavilion. (more: www.pennstatehockey.com)

Not to be outdone are the Lady Icers, also ACHA members. Root for the Icers against familiar foes like Ohio State, Michigan and Wisconsin. Come out for upcoming games against Buffalo (Nov. 1, 4:30 p.m. and Nov. 2, 9:45 a.m.). (more: www.psuwomenshockey.com)

Rugby Want to come to Penn State on an away game weekend, but still want the excitement of a high‑octane contest? Come out to see rugby ‑ a contact sport without the pads! Catch the men’s and women’s rugby teams at home Nov. 1 on the turf fields behind the IST building. The Ruggers will host Radford while the Lady Ruggers welcome Widener. (more: www.psurugby.org)

When the championships for the fall sports start, the season seamlessly turns to winter, meaning the BJC will be home to many men’s and women’s basketball games, and Rec Hall will host several gymnastics meets. Don’t blink because warm baseball contests at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park will be here before you know it.

Show your unwavering support for all Penn State sports by rooting for the Lions, Icers and Ruggers at home games and events!

Are We Going All the Way? Start Planning Bowl Travel NowBy Annalynne Kenawell

TicketsPenn State gets an allotment of tickets that are available to a limited number of season ticket holders and students. Also try online venues like StubHub.com. The way this year is shaping up, it may be worth splurging if tickets are pricey.

Getting ThereBy BusFullington offers a bowl game package when the game is within driving distance, such as the Orange Bowl. A package from Fullington might also include tickets to an outside attraction such as Disney World as well as accommodations. There is a maximum of 10 hours driving in a day so these packages tend to span seven days or so. Generally, there is about one bus load full of Penn State fans. They take names for people who are interested before the game is announced. After the game is announced those who gave their names will be contacted with more information.

Air Travel PackagesThere are already some packages available through online travel agencies, and the earlier you sign up, the lower the price tag. If you want a more personal experience plenty of local travel agencies are ready to plan your trip down to the last detail. At Centre for Travel, downtown State College, they have been planning bowl trips since the ’70s. Their packages range from airfare and accommodations to special social events. Tickets are included but they will deduct the price of tickets from your overall package if you already have your own. If you pre‑register with Centre for Travel, you get first choice of packages once the games are announced. Collegiate Athletic Travel offers a similar deal. Their pre‑registra‑tion is fully refundable even after the games are announced. They also have pre‑game parties in addition to their transportation and lodging packages. Collegiate Athletic Travel reports that BCS Bowl packages sell within a few days, but a Big Ten Bowl buys you a little more time to decide. But when push comes to shove, Penn State fans love their football, so don’t dilly dally.

Penn State’s win at Wisconsin guarantees the Nittany Lion faithful another bowl game. For graduating seniors it’s the last chance for a memorable football road trip. For alumni, it’s a great excuse to act like a college kid again. A bowl trip requires good planning. Here’s what you need to cover:

Make Yourself at HomeTips on the Best Places to Stay By Jessica Savrock

Bed & Breakfasts“Just make yourself at home.” That’s the first thing that Sharon Au, owner of The House on Top of the Hill Bed & Breakfast, tells her guests upon their arrival. The B&B is located in a tranquil setting in Boalsburg, just a few miles from downtown State College. “At my place, you’re close to the stadium, but away from the hustle and bustle of downtown,” said Au. Many alumni prefer this relaxing atmosphere. If you’ve never experienced a B&B, you may be hesitant to try one. Some travelers are concerned about lack of privacy or having to share meals with strangers, but this isn’t necessarily the case. Most innkeepers want their guests to have the ultimate experience and will customize your stay to meet your needs. Sandy Miller, owner of Mountain Hideaway near Port Matilda, says, “Each one is unique and the locations are different. Many try to provide privacy if people don’t want to share meals or socialize.” She recommends that guests ask questions and speak up so their personal needs can be met.

The Magic of the Mountains: St. Joseph Institute

The log and stone buildings, designed in a style reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright, create an immediate impression that this is not an ordinary resort. St. Joseph Institute sits on a mountainside just 25 minutes from downtown State College, but feels as if it is several hours from the busyness of everyday life. This is a place to relax, unwind, be creative, or find greater wellness.

In the center of the resort is the spa and wellness center, for many guests the reason they have traveled for hours to spend a day, a week‑end or a week at St. Josephs. Offering more than 60 spa and healing treatments, the Institute has a growing reputation for helping people let go of stress, feel rejuvenated, be freed from pain, find a new sense of purpose, or start down the road to a healthier lifestyle.

When the Institute President, Jenny Sheetz, designed the facility, her goal was to create an oasis where people could experience the beauty of central Pennsylvania, while benefiting from all of the many services that are available. While her lifetime focus has been healing and teaching, she shares the passion of her family’s large convenience store business that has made service the cornerstone of its success.

St. Josephs offers a variety of amenities. The more than 200 acres has many miles of walking trails. The recreation area has tennis, basketball and volleyball courts, shuffle board, a bonfire pit and

a children’s playground. There is a well‑equipped gym, saunas, a resistance pool and hot tub, game room with billiards and a library with thousands of volumes. However, many guests spend large amounts of time sitting on the broad country porches, reading by day and watching the stars at night.

While striving to reflect high standards, St. Josephs is proud to have been recognized as the “most affordable resort spa in the Northeast.” The Washington Post has favorably compared its spa programs with those of the prestigious Canyon Ranch, and the President of Luxury SpaFinder Magazine has recommended the Institute to her readers.
