The Heart of Homeboy

Homeboy Industries provides, hope, training, and support to formerly gang-involved and recently incarcerated men and women, allowing them to redirect their lives and become contributing members of our community.

Founded in 1988, and located in gang-neutral territory in the heart of Los Angeles, Homeboy Industries is home to social enterprises that provide job training, as well as comprehensive free services for those seeking employment and a path out of gang life. Homeboy strives to confront immediate needs for our clients, such as employment, while simultaneously addressing underlying issues including deep poverty, mental health disorders, substance abuse and lack of education.

CASE MANAGEMENT

A cornerstone of the Homeboy model is case management. All trainees at Homeboy Industries are immediately placed with a case manager who helps them to create a goal-oriented service plan, guides their progress through necessary services, and holds them accountable as they move toward a better life.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES

Employment counselors at Homeboy play an important role as they work with employers, trainees and community clients.  Employment Services provides a weekly series of workshops that assist clients with breaking employment barriers and finding hidden job markets. Counselors work to build strong, ongoing relationships with employers, encouraging all to hire Homeboy Industries candidates.

CURRICULUM AND EDUCATION

Our first priority is to guide clients to complete a high school diploma or obtain GED certification. Homeboy provides GED preparation as well as life skills classes and an enrichment curriculum, teaching skills from financial management to healthy relationships. There are over 50 classes offered each week and more than 400 clients attend the classes every month. In addition, Homeboy is partnered with Learning Works! Charter High School enrolling 105 students, under age 19.

MENTAL HEALTH, SUBSTANCE ABUSE AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SERVICES

Trauma-informed clinical services are available to all of our trainees. In addition to individual psychotherapy, the Mental Health Program offers substance abuse counseling;

court-approved domestic violence classes; therapeutic dance; a psycho-educational “Baby and Me” group; and psychiatric evaluation and support. As demand for these services is high, “Homeboy Heals,” a cadre of volunteer licensed psychotherapists, provides additional capacity for counseling.

LEGAL SERVICES

Homeboy’s on-site lawyer provides free consultations and referrals pertaining to many legal matters, especially criminal law, including bench warrants and post-conviction matters, immigration law, employment law and family law, addressing such issues as divorce, child custody and visitation, and child support. Petitions for dismissal or expungements are provided as a key service that reduce serious barriers to employment.

TATTOO REMOVAL

This is a critical service and entry point for many clients. Visible gang tattoos are a major barrier to entry in employment and education, and our clients often hope to remove them to set an example for their children. Our on-site clinic is run by our staff and a team of nearly 30 volunteer doctors.

SOLAR PANEL INSTALLATION TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Homeboy Industries covers tuition and supply costs for clients who wish to enroll in a Photovoltaic Training program. Homeboy also offers additional tutoring to help students pass a national credentialing test that makes our clients competitive candidates for employment in the green industry. Solar Panel staff work to cultivate a network of PV firms that consider our graduates when hiring.

Quality Services and Programs

Homeboy’s free wrap-around services are a pathway designed to equip our trainees and clients for success as they turn their lives around.

Nothing Stops a Bullet Like a Job.

A distinctive feature of Homeboy Industries is its social enterprises, where the most difficult to place individuals are hired in transitional jobs. In a safe, supportive environment,

men and women learn fundamental job skills while simultaneously building their resumes and work experience. Former rivals soon find themselves working side-by-side,

experiencing true friendship in place of the limited community of gang life.

Supplying fresh breads, pastries and specialty goods to the walk-up counter at Homegirl Café, Homeboy Farmers Markets and restaurants throughout Los Angeles, the bakery is a place where former enemies bake bread side by side, learn-ing the science behind their skills. Homeboy has launched a new Volunteer Therapist Program. Option One asks providers within a 10-mile radius of our facility to counsel one Homeboy client weekly – at no charge – in his or her private office. The second option, for those whose offices are further away, is to schedule a three to four hour block of time each week at Homeboy Industries’ First Street location. For more information about our volunteer opportunites: [email protected].

VOLUNTEER: TATTOO REMOVAL

We are always seeking volunteer doctors, nurses and medical professionals for the Tattoo Removal Program. An increase in volunteers assisting in Tattoo Removal, means we can add clinic hours.
