GregoryBoyleisthefounderofHomeboyIndustriesinLosAngeles,Calif.,thelargestgangintervention,rehabilitation,andre-entryprogramintheworld.AJesuitpriest,from1986to1992FatherBoyleservedaspastorofDoloresMissionChurch,thenthepoorestCatholicparishinLosAngelesthatalsohadthehighestconcentrationofgangactivityinthecity.
FatherBoylewitnessedthedevastatingimpactofgangviolenceonhiscommunityduringtheso-called“decadeofdeath”thatbeganinLosAngelesinthelate1980sandpeakedat1,000gang-relatedkillingsin1992.Inthefaceoflawenforcementtacticsandcriminaljusticepoliciesofsuppressionandmassincarcerationasthemeanstoendgangviolence,FatherBoyleandparishandcommunitymembersadoptedwhatwasaradicalapproachatthetime:treatgangmembersashumanbeings.
In1988theystartedwhatwouldeventuallybecomeHomeboyIndustries,whichemploysandtrainsformergangmembersinarangeofsocialenterprises,aswellasprovidescriticalservicestothousandsofmenandwomenwhowalkthroughitsdoorseveryyearseekingabetterlife.
FatherBoyleistheauthorofthe2010NewYorkTimes-bestsellerTattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion.His2017bookistheLosAngelesTimes-bestsellerBarking to the Choir: The Power of Radical Kinship.
HehasreceivedtheCaliforniaPeacePrizeandbeeninductedintotheCaliforniaHallofFame.In2014,theWhiteHousenamedFatherBoyleaChampionofChange.HereceivedtheUniversityofNotreDame’s2017LaetareMedal,theoldesthonorgiventoAmericanCatholics.
