We are a general machine shop that have been in operation since 1977mostly supplying the needs of industry in the area from it's beginning. As theeconomy has changed, we have needed to change with it. Some of theindustrial companies have left the area or have closed over the years.

We still work with local industrial customers producing their parts andrepairs. We also have developed a line of quality Gravely tractor parts tosupply the needs of Gravely owners everywhere. Our sales are now coveringthe globe from Canada to Australia.

The Problem

The problem has been the price of the valve keeper, not that they wereunavailable from Gravely. Now as to the price; we have found the OEMGravely valve keeper "C" clip selling for more that $22.00 each. That is whywe needed to fix the problem.

Description for theGravely Model L T Head Engine

Valve Keeper "C" Clip

The valve keeper is used to retain the spring washer to the valve. It islocated at the base of the valve, inserted into a slot on the valve stem,setting in the cup of the spring washer. The OEM part is stamp formed andhardened.

The Cogan Valley Machine equivalent replacement is machined from grade4140 chrome-moly steel bar stock. After machining the valve keeper "C" clipis tumbled then hardened through to 56RC.

A few years ago, after the success of the "T" head valve guide,a small run of valve guides for the Kohler engine, used in Gravely tractors,was produced. They have been serving the Kohler powered Gravely tractorsas well as the "L"s.

Solution: The boys at Cogan Valley Machine Co now have;

"Problem Solved"The valve that we found was close; but not drop-in-ready. There wereseveral areas that needed to be machined or modified to bring it to a valveof dimensions that could be used in the T-Head engine

Intake / Exhaust Valve

This valve will fit the Gravely Model L T-Head motor. What we have is anExhaust valve, but because of its metal's physical properties, will workperfectly for the Intake as well.

NOTE: (Conversely, an intake valve will not work for use as an exhaust valvedue to its metal's physical properties.)

Gravely Model L Rod Crank Pin Bearing

Description for theGravely Model L Rod Crank Pin Bearing

The crank pin is located between the fly-weights of the model "L" crankshaft. The connecting rod runs on this pin. The crank pin bearing is press fitinto the big end of the connecting rod

This item is made of bearing bronze.

The stock standard size of the rod bearing journal is 1.500". The ID of thebearing is .005" to .010" undersized to allow for a "fit" to the journal afterpressing into the rod.

Precaution:

Through our experience with these "L" engines, we found that many of theused connecting rods vary in size mostly due to the hammering affect orspun bearing. It would be wise to carefully measure for your particular needs.










It may be necessary to re-size the connecting rod. We have decided to holdout a few of these crank pin bearings in a semi-finish condition to customsize the OD to order.

The Back Story

Over the past year, we have been requested several times to produce thisbearing if we could reduce the retail cost. This item has always been veryexpensive, ranging from more than $70 to as much as $100.

Description for theGravely Model L Front Main Crank Bearing

This bronze bearing is used on the forward end of the main crank shaft in theT Head Gravely Engine.

The bearing matches all dimensions of the OEM bearing supplied with theinstalled woodruff key.

Special sized main bearings are available on request and can be fitted to yourre-ground / re-sized crankshaft.

Gravely Model L Crank Pin

Description for theGravely Model L Crank Pin

This crank pin is located between the fly-weights of the model "L" crank


















shaft. The connecting rod runs on this pin. This pin is hollow creating an oilreservoir for the crank bearing. The cavity is closed off with a "spreader bolt"that expands the outer ends of the crank pin in the fly-weights to hold themin place.

This item is made of grade 4140 chrome-moly steel.

The crank pin is hardened, then ground on the close fit areas, plus the rodbearing surface is polished to a fine micro finish. The stock standard size ofthe rod bearing journal is 1.500".

Precaution:

Through our experience with these "L" engines, we found that many of thesecrank pins vary in size on both the bearing journal and the fly-weightmounting. It would be wise to carefully measure for your particular needs.We have decided to hold out a few of these crank pins in a semi-finishcondition to custom grind to order.

These latches are made to work more smoothly than the OEM with a camlock design to pull the latch bar back into the lock position more easily andare installed on the outside of the Cogan Valley Machine produced mainDozer Mounting Bracket for more accessible operation.

Cogan Valley Machine Exclusive Value Added Feature:

A feature has been added to the bar latch to make it easier to load the dozerframe into the brackets. Now it is possible to load the frame into the bracketsusing a more hands free effort (and therefore safer) with a self opening andself closing action of the latch as the dozer frame latch bar passes under it tothe lock position. This is do to the latch's innovative shape and the additionof a stop pin installed on the bottom of the bracket to prevent the bar latchfrom swinging below its bar lock position.

The latch has received a Powder Coat Paint for a durable finish.

As we have determined many times in the past, it usually takes little effort toimprove on a product to make it better or work easier.

These also can be installed on the inside of the OEM brackets (in most cases)to give the operator some of the same convenient benefits of operation. Todo a complete install, the OEM bracket will need to be drilled for the stop pin.

These are available as a kit, with all the necessary hardware to convert yourOEM latch to the Cogan Valley Machine Exclusive design.

Snow Blade / Dozer Mounting Brackets

These brackets bolt to the drive axle of the 800/8000 series four wheeltractor to support the back end of the snow plow/dozer blade assembly.

The latches are made to work more smoothly than the original with a camlock design to pull the latch bar back into the lock position more easily andare installed on the outside of the main bracket for more accessibleoperation.

Gravely Kohler Powered 2 Wheeled Tractor Strut Brace

The Back Story

Over the past year, we have been asked a couple of times if we could make astrut brace fashioned after the Gravely version that was more reasonablypriced.At a MSRP of $78, we thought we could shave a few dollars off.Listed here at less than half, how successful were we?

This Gravely Kohler Powered 2 Wheeled Tractor Strut Brace was introduced atthe 2010 Mow-In in May and was met with high interest and brisk sales.

Description for the GravelyKohler Powered 2 Wheeled Tractor Strut Brace

This Gravely Kohler Powered 2 Wheeled Tractor Strut Brace is designed tomount to the tongue of the cart, roller, or similar trailing attachment and slipinto the upper hitch bar to support the machine level when nothing isattached to the front to hold that end down. Its function is the same as theroller rest used on the "L" models.

If not done already, a half inch mounting hole will need to be drilled in thetongue of your cart, roller or other similar trailing attachment to bolt thesmall end of the strut. This strut has the same hole spacing and is theequivalent replacement of the OEM strut. The two required bolts are suppliedwith the strut to create a complete install kit.

Note: It has been called to our attention that the Gravely printed illustrationof this product shows a clevis pin for the mounting hole to the tractor. Wepurchased a new currently produced "Gravely" kit to use as our pattern thatincluded a 5/8" bolt for this function. Apparently, the kit was supplied bothways over the years. A Gravely dealer friend of ours tells us the bolt makesfor a better install because it lessens the amount of free play between thestrut and the tractor, thereby making the setup more ridged.

If desired, the clevis pin is available upon request.

These Strut Braces are supplied painted black, but can be painted over, byyou, to match your machine if you desire. We decided that since there's avariety of machine and attachment colors, black might be the best paint colorchoice. The sample pictured in this offering is in primer paint to show moredetail.




Gravely Quick Hitch Horn

This Quick Hitch Horn is an equivalent replacement of the Gravely issuedpart.

As with most of our shafting products where extra strength is required, thisQuick Hitch Horn is made of 4140 steel (chrome-moly). It has a grind finishwhere it slips into your attachment.

All associated hardware is supplied with this horn as a complete kit.

This Quick Hitch Horn is also used in the Cogan Valley Machine innovativedesigned Quick Hitch 4 Bolt Horn Assembly.

Shift Ball Knob

Description for the Shift Lever Ball Knob.

This shift knob will fit the C10, C12, 408, 424, 430, 450 and 800/8000 seriesGravely tractors and perhaps others. The 400 series tractors utilize 4 of theseshift knobs.

This is a high grade commercial shift knob with a brass insert. The insertthread size is 7/16-20. Unlike the stock 1-1/4 inch diameter shift knob, this isthe more comfortable 1-1/2 inch diameter.

This is not a common size for knobs of this kind, therefore a little difficult tofind in commercial markets. We found a limited number of these and may notbe able to replenish our supply once our stock has depleted.

As with most of my shafting parts, this shaft is made from grade 4140(chrome-moly) steel. It is hardened and has a grind finish for the bearing fit.

These clutch cam rollers are used in the 800 and some early 8000 SeriesTractor's forward or reverse clutch.

These rollers are the equivalent replacement of the original "Gravely"produced roller assembly as first designed for this clutch application.

The 1 pc. roller design followed this 2 pc. original roller design, thus, this 2pc. roller can interchange with the 1 pc. roller. Perhaps this design changecame about due to a change in the manufacturing process (and therefore thedesign) of the pressure plate that possibly allowed the separate axle pin toshift off center giving the roller unequal support.

As with a large number of products offered by Cogan Valley Machine Co, thispart is made of the best stuff, grade 4140 steel. These rollers have beenhardened throughout to 55+ RC. The roller axle pin are standard hardeneddowel pins as they were for their first design.

We have been told that Gravely has made some of these rollers fromsomething called Sintered Metal, a form of powdered steel, pressed underhigh pressure, then case hardened creating a soft center. This material israther inexpensive to produce but has a short wear life. If the rollers fail,they generally cause damage to the pressure plate soon after, thus adding tothe cost of repair. Replace your inferior rollers with our A+ quality rollersbefore your clutch service cost becomes a major repair job!!

This after market manufacturer and some dealers we spoke with, are of theopinion that this 2 pc. roller design is superior because the roller does notwear the clutch plate as quickly since the axle pin does not turn in the rollerpin seat as the 1 pc. roller will. Therefore, though not currently availablefrom Gravely, the 2 pc roller would be preferred due to the prolongedpressure plate life.

Due to the two different pressure plates out in the marketplace, we find itnecessary to supply two lengths of dowel pins with these rollers to addressthe created potential problem of the roller axle pin side shift. With thisaddition, the preferred 2 pc design once again may be used with thecurrently produced pressure plate.

We offer a 3 roller set for near Gravely's list price for just one roller ascurrently produced.

Gravely Old Style 40/50 inch Mower Blade Spindle Shaft

This vertical spindle shaft fits the 40 or 50 inch 3 blade finish mower decksfor the Gravely 4 wheel rider tractors. This spindle shaft has a tapered endwith a woodruff key where the keyed blade hub fits on. This keyed hub is animprovement over the original that was tapered but not keyed. The lack ofthe key permitted the hub to spin on the shaft and at times caused a failure.The later style of this shaft used a very fine spline to hold the blade hub.

As with most of my shafting parts, this shaft is made from grade 4140(chrome-moly) steel, making it stronger and tougher than the original. Theshaft has been hardened and has a grind finish throughout.

Supplied with 2 new required woodruff keys and 2 new 5/8 nyloc nuts.

This vertical spindle shaft fits the 40 inch Commercial 2 blade finish mowerfor the Gravely 2 wheel walk behind tractors. The early mower just had 1/2round skids to glide on. The later production models had the same 1/2 roundskids and out front caster wheels

As with most of my shafting parts, this shaft is made from grade 4140(chrome-moly) steel, making it stronger and tougher than the original. It hasa grind finish on all close fit areas.

It does not have the 3/8 square hole at the bottom for the socket wrench as Ihave been told by several dealers that it has been the cause for failure ofmany of these shafts.

A new woodruff key is included.

The Back Story

This is the shaft that started it all with Gravely parts.

Back in '03 I needed a new spindle shaft for my brush hog. After a littleresearch I discovered they cost well over $100. Since I have a machine shop,I thought I could make a shaft cheaper. Considering I never do anythinghalfway, I got some grade 4140 steel shafting to improve on the strength ofthe shaft. Thinking I might need another one later for my other 30" mower, Idecided to make a few while I was at it. After they were machined, I thought,if I needed one of these, maybe someone else might as well.

eBay was moving along pretty good back then in early '04, so I figured I'dgive it a try to pass one of the extra shaft along. Well that one sold prettyfast. I decided to make a few more and it didn't take long for those to sell aswell. I must have something people want. I got the shaft!!

Shortly after making a full production run to sell, of what a bar length wouldyield, Richard's Lawn & Garden emailed to see what I might do for him if hepurchased a couple of these. From that time till now, as they say, is history.That email marked the beginning of what now has been a 6 year workingrelationship supplying him with various parts to distribute around the world.Richard among others, since that beginning, have suggested many neededGravely parts to manufacture. This one shaft has grown into a major part ofthe Cogan Valley Machine shop business.

To date, there are more than 150 of these shafts out in the marketplace onrepaired or rebuild mower decks. Many of the members of the Gravely Clubof America are using these shafts and think they are much better than theoriginal.

The newer version of this shaft has a milled keyway added to the bottom ofthe shaft for a keyed blade washer. Some dealers suggest not using thekeyed washer as they have caused some failures to these shafts. If yourequire the keyway style shaft, We will mill the keyway on a per order basisbefore shipment.

Cam Roller Clutch Pressure Plate Stud

Our clutch studs are made of durable 4140 steel hardened to a grade 5 boltstrength. These 1/2" diameter studs measure 4-1/2" long with short coursethread on one end to thread into the trans axle case and long fine thread onthe other for the adjusting nuts.

These clutch studs fit on 800 and some 8000 series riding tractors. Checkyour application. These may fit other models.

Though each clutch utilizes two studs, we are offering these at a per studprice, because many times, one is all a customer needs to replace a bent orbroken stud.

Self locking nyloc nuts are included with purchase of two (2) studs.

Description of the GravelyRotary Cultivator Dirt Seal Bushing #12480

This bushing is the equivalent replacement of the current "Gravely" producedpart #12480.

This bushing is located on the tine shaft at the gear case; one on each side,thus utilizing a total of two. Subjected to a heavy dose of dirt and grit, thegrease/dirt seal runs on this renewable surface, thus when worn, sparring thereplacement of the entire tine shaft. Upon renewal of the seal, this bushingshould be replaced as well. This bushing is flat and smooth on the outer sealsurface. It should not have a groove or depression worn into this surface asthis condition will prevent the new seal to work properly.

As with a large number of products offered by Cogan Valley Machine Co, thispart is made of grade 4140 steel.

This bushing has been hardened and the seal surface ground to a good finish.

Back Story

Richard's Lawn & Garden of Spencer, WV. discovered a lack of availabilityearlier this year from Gravely for this part and asked if we could solve theproblem. Gravely used standard hardware items whenever possible in theirdesign as was the case here to guide the spring at the 2 speed axle shiftlever that holds the lever in either high or low speed shifted position. Theyutilized a 1/4" X 3" long threaded eye bolt. As with many things here inAmerica, this eye bolt is no longer produced, therefore Gravely discontinuedthe part. At the last listing from Gravely, the list price was over $30. Howridiculous is that for what might be a $.50 bolt back in the day whenthousands were produced at a time.

Our Solution

Our guide pin is designed to replace the 1/4" X 3" long threaded eye bolt. Inas much as the threaded portion of the eye bolt was actually not neededother than to thread two nuts on to create a shoulder to back up the spring,we designed a pin to work more smoothly without the thread and added acentering washer to locate the pin though the mounting bracket. Since wewere machining a custom part, we could design it to better suit theapplication. The new pin is more like a shouldered 3/8" eye bolt size (minusthe thread) with a 1/4" toggle hole. pin design as with the OEM eye bolt.

By adding the centering washer, the 17/32" clearance hole in the mountingbracket is effectively extended toward the spring 3/16" and confined down toa 3/8" hole that rocks up and down with the eye bolt pin as it is shifted fromone speed to the other. The conical shape of the centering washer maintainsa centered location of the pin through the bracket hole as it rocks on thecurved side of the mounting bracket.

Through our research of this part, it was noted that at times some folk feltthe need to extend the length of the 1/4" eye bolt because it would fall out ofthe bracket during shifting. Either this was because of unequal adjustment ofthe shift travel or inconsistent fabrication of the bracket at the factory or justthe sloppy way the eye bolt passed through the bracket hole. If eitherscenario is true, the controlling affect of the centering washer should helpcorrect the problem. This new guide pin works great in our sample tractor.

Offered here as a kit, containing the pin, centering washer, spring, cotter pinand a standard 1/4" washer will enable you to rebuild your spring guideassembly.
